Building a 650 Horsepower BMW N54 Engine
Known for its performance, engineering, and widespread adoption among Bimmer enthusiasts, the N54 engine marked a significant milestone in BMW’s history. The N54 engine was introduced by BMW in 2006 and was produced until 2016 most notably in cars like the 135i Coupe and Convertible (E82/E88), 335i Coupe, Convertible, Sedan, and Wagon (E90/E91/E92/E93), 535i Sedan and Wagon (E60/E61), and the Z4 sDrive35i (E89). This engine really marked BMW’s return to turbocharging in a production inline-six engine. The N54 is a 3.0-liter inline-six engine featuring twin turbo’s. The use of twin turbos helps the engine deliver strong low-end torque and impressive horsepower output across the rpm range. The N54 was one of the first BMW engines to feature direct fuel injection. To support direct injection, the N54 engine features a high-pressure fuel system capable of delivering fuel at pressures of up to 2900 psi (200 bar for the non Americans). The N54 also incorporates BMW’s VANOS system for both the intake and exhaust camshafts. This variable valve timing technology allows for precise control over valve timing, optimizing engine performance, responsiveness, and fuel efficiency. Like a lot of current BMW engines, the N54 features an aluminum block and cylinder head, which helps reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity and heat dissipation properties, but be careful of overheating, because once that aluminum warps, there’s no going back.

16th ANNUAL EURO FEST RETURNS TO RIDGELAND OCTOBER 13-14, 2023
RIDGELAND, Miss. – The 16th Annual Renaissance Euro Fest Classic European Automobile & Motorcycle Show returns to Ridgeland October 13-14, 2023. Euro Fest is an all-European automobile and motorcycle show held at Renaissance at Colony Park, an upscale, open-air shopping destination in Ridgeland, Mississippi. It is a free event to both spectators and participants and in the past fifteen years has attracted over 200,000 attendees that have come to view over 1,600 entries from twelve Southeastern states. 15,000 spectators are expected this year. Events kick off on Friday, October 13 with the escorted BMW Renaissance Road Rally Drive beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Renaissance at Colony Park. The caravan rolls to the Town of Livingston and returns to Renaissance at Colony Park at 4:30 p.m. Participants, media, and sponsors are invited to the “Packet Pick Up Party” and reception at Lee Michael’s from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The main event opens to the public at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14. Attendees can enjoy a Bavarian-style beer garden, music from Polka band the Delta Krauts, and fare from food truck Barbeque Shine as they peruse the exhibits. Over 150 vehicles will be shown and judged, plus 75 vehicles (not yet 25 years old) will be displayed in a Club Corral on the east lawn of the Renaissance. Awards will be presented at 4:00 p.m. and the show will conclude at 5:00 p.m. New this year, the Madison Career and Technical Center will display their Volkswagen “Baja Bug”, a unique vehicle built over a 2.5-year period. The course, made up of students from four local high schools, is a job training program for students who go straight from the class to working at dealerships such as Porsche and Ford. TRANSLATION:
(since there was some confusion, maybe this will help somewhat)
v12: an internal combustion engine, usually of the gasoline-fueled spark-plug-ignition four-stroke variety, with twelve cylinders arranged in two sets/banks/rows of six with a (typically) 60-degree V angle between them.
bmw: Bayerische Motoren Werke, Bavarian Motor Works, the German car company
sohc: Single OverHead Camshaft. Each cylinder head that bolts on top of the pistons in the engine’s main “block” contains one camshaft, a metal rod with bumps on it that push open the valves as it spins half the speed of the crankshaft to let gases in/out of the cylinder and complete the four-stroke combustion cycle. Usually centrally mounted atop the head and uses rocker arms to actuate one intake valve and one exhaust valve for every cylinder of the engine. BMW’s early V12s and some inline-6s used this design. Example:
dohc: Dual OverHead Camshaft. Instead of one camshaft actuating both the intake and exhaust valves, there are two camshafts mounted directly above the sets of valves, separating intake from exhaust. This usually coincides with using two intake valves and two exhaust valves for each cylinder, and a centrally located spark plug. The vast majority of modern automobile engines use this design, as it allows for significant airflow and control over the timing of valve movements that greatly affect combustion. Example:
24v: a twelve cylinder engine with two valves per cylinder, for a total of twenty four
48v: a twelve cylinder engine with four valves per cylinder, for a total of forty eight
m70: the engine family code name for the single-overhead-cam 24-valve v12 engines that bmw made from 1987 to 1996
m72: the engine family code name for the dual-overhead-cam 48-valve v12 engines that bmw developed into a prototype but didn’t bring into production in the 90s
m73: the engine family code name for the single-overhead-cam 24-valve v12 engines that bmw made from 1993 to 2002
n73: the engine family code name for the dual-overhead-cam 48-valve v12 engines that bmw made from 2003 to 2016. These engines had the added complexity of the “Valvetronic” system that would vary the distance that the intake valves would open (effectively replacing the throttle plate), as well as having high-pressure direct-injection of fuel into the cylinder/combustion chamber instead of conventional low-pressure intake port injection.
me just now finding out that in the early 90s(?) bmw developed a dohc 48v v12 called the m72 to replace their sohc 24v m70 v12, but canceled it because it supposedly had too much nvh for a luxury car and made the sohc m73 v12 instead:
we could have had a normal dohc bmw v12.
before all the direct injected variable valve lift nonsense of the n73 happened in 2003.

1974 MÜNCH MAMMOTH TTS-E 1200 -The motorcycle world is a richer place for the likes of Friedl Münch. Starting in 1966, working out of his shop in West Germany, he gave us one of the most interesting, charismatic motorcycles ever to roll a wheel. His Münch Mammoth – Mammut in German – can rightfully lay claim to being the world's first superbike. "It was simply the fastest, most powerful, most expensive bike of its time," wrote moto-historian Hugo Wilson of the outrageous machine.
Not content with the twin-cylinder motors powering most bikes of the day, Münch went to the automotive arena and plucked the engine from an NSU 1000 TT Prinz. In retrospect, this engine seems almost perfectly suited for motorcycle use. Four cylinders in line, 1,000cc, air-cooled, with a single overhead cam and a rugged five-main-bearing crankshaft. The Münch-designed frame was a robust twin-cradle affair, obviously inspired by the stellar Norton Featherbed, best of the day. Two years before Honda's blockbuster CB750, Münch produced the world's first modern inline-four.
Not that it was a simple drop-in operation. Münch would need to fabricate an oil pan, primary cover and gearbox case – the latter carrying a modified four-speed cluster from the defunct Horex operation. He wanted more horsepower than stock, so camshafts had to be developed, dual-throat Weber carburetors fitted. No problem for Friedl, engineer and inveterate tinkerer.
Everywhere your eyes fall on a Münch, you see components designed without regard to cost. Friedl Münch was an indefatigable one-man design team, not hemmed in by norms in his pursuit of weight savings, power or speed. Münch's metal of choice for his castings was electron, a magnesium-alloy lighter than aluminum, though harder to work with. Besides various covers and cases, he used electron for the one-piece seat base/rear fender, the double-leading-shoe front brake of his own design and the vaned rear wheel, also his own design and the first cast motorcycle rim to make production. Like the rest of the bike, the exotic metal was not cheap: At a time when a top-of-the-line BMW sold for $1,895, buyers had to part with $4,000 to acquire one of those first Münch Mammoths.
Only a handful of the Series 1 Mammoths were built, as few as 14, with just nine making their way to America, where they were sold as Clymer-Münch Mammoth IVs, thanks to a partnership with publisher and wheeler-dealer Floyd Clymer. Clymer's ad slogan for the bikes was, "Built up to a Standard, Not Down to a Price." Upon Clymer's death in 1970, importation of subsequent Mammoths passed through a variety of hands. Worldwide it's estimated that perhaps 500 bikes were built before operations ceased in 1975 – though as has been pointed out, bookkeeping was never Friedl's strongpoint. As production continued into the Seventies, in effect every machine was a special order, no two alike. This 1974 TTS-E, built for Ford of Europe engineer Helmut Bickenbach, illustrates the point perfectly. With the Alps in his backyard, Bickenbach liked to sport tour, so ordered frame no. 246 as the foundation of a long-wheelbase chassis, some 2-3in. longer than the usual short-coupled Münchs. By '74 stock displacement had grown to 1200cc, but in search of 100bhp he specified the engine be bored to 1286cc, requiring separate cast iron cylinder barrels. Also added to the work order was a high-lift cam, bigger valves and a quad-port Kugelfischer mechanical fuel -injection sytem – making the bike an Einspritzer, hence the E in its model designation. In those days before electronic onboard computers, fuel injection had to mechanically mapped, accomplished here by a quaint ramp-and-ball setup. By request the TTS-E was outfitted with a long-distance fuel tank holding almost 9gal., plus a well-padded solo seat complete with lidded tool compartment. The optional single 200mm Sportlich headlight was selected over the usual dual-beam arrangement. Leading the TTS down the road was a stout fork assembly made to Münch's specs by the UK's Rickman Brothers to accommodate Friedl's massive 250mm four-shoe racing brake. Also on Bickenbach's wish-list were twin oil coolers and a chromed luggage rack that also served as mounting point for a pair of saddlebags. Second owner of this TTS-E was Perry Bushong, master mechanic, Münch aficionado and formerly the longtime BMW dealer in Fort Worth. He purchased the bike in 1986 from Bickenbach, who had been transferred to Detroit and taken the Münch with him. Bushong actually met Friedl Münch in the mid-'60s on a trip to Germany. The two remained in touch and became friends; in fact, on a visit to the U.S. Münch made a point of visiting Texas to see Bushong – and to lay hands on the bike's timing, which had been acting up. Bushong enjoyed the Münch for 25-plus years and put on most of the 23,000 kilometers now showing. In 2012, John Landstrom of Blue Moon Cycle in Norcross, Georgia became the third and current owner of Münch TTS-E no. 246. In his care it was shown at the exclusive Hilton Head Concours in 2017, and now, with a new battery and fresh tune-up, is ready for a new owner to enjoy. Included in the sale are an owner's handbook, service records/receipts going back to 1974, original advertising poster and sales brochure, original German and Texas titles, and hand-written notes by Friedl Münch. Mr. Münch is no longer with us, but his motorcycles remain – rare, quirky, charismatic, technically advanced, historically significant, a fitting reflection of the man who made them.33833818 CommentsLikeComment

2019’s Top Rides: Part 3/Buick Regal GS, Subaru Ascent and Golf R

Buick Regal GS AWD: Buick gets it right
At 12, I wanted to be a car designer. Fate however had different plans for me. With an eye for automotive design, I grew up loving Buicks; from the ’57 Special to the ’59 Invicta, with the ’64 Wildcat stealing my heart time and again. Cadillacs took a close second, Fords were ok but I found Chevs too feminine. Buicks, were masculine with broad shouldered front fenders and creased lines, personifying the designing cues of GM greats, Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell.
Then came the Riviera. One snowy December afternoon as I headed to my post office, there on St. Lawrence Boulevard, with six inches of snow on the ground sat a ’65 Riviera. My heart skipped several beats and I must have studied its lines for what seemed like an eternity.
Well into the ‘70s there were some noteworthy designs that came out of Buick’s design studios however, the last four decades have been anything but exciting. That has all changed with the launch of the Regal GS – the sexiest Buick to come out of Detroit in, well the last four decades.
The Grand Sport designation is nothing new to the Buick line up, having been associated with ‘70s era muscle cars but this is the first time that it has been used in a European sports sedan context. The stylish GS goes up against some well established rivals like the Acura TLX, Lexus ES, BMW 3 series and the like, a tough field to say the least. The Regal GS is more than just good looks, it’s a bona fide sports sedan. In fact a rebadged, German built, Opel Insignia, so the GS starts with the right genes. European engineered handling makes it the best tarmac gripping Buick ever.
Red Brembo brake calipers immediately tell everyone that this is not your typical Buick.
While different drive options/trim levels are available elsewhere around the globe, we Canucks get only one trim/drive option- also the most desirable one - the all-wheel-drive version motivated by the 310 horsepower DOHC, 3.6L V6 with variable valve timing punching out 282 lb-ft of torque through a 9-speed automatic.
Entry price is $44,045, my tester came with the Buick Experience Package ($3,495) that included the moonroof, a Bose premium 8-speaker sound system, wireless charging, an 8” touch screen, HD radio, LED leveling headlights, The Driver Confidence Package (yes you read that right) at $1,995 includes adaptive cruise, forward collision alert with automatic braking, lane keep assist, front pedestrian braking and heads up display. Subaru Ascent: If at first you don’t succeed…
If you thought that Subaru already had a large SUV you’re right. The magic word here being had. The B9 Tribeca, later shortened to just Tribeca debuted in 2005 to, lets just say a less than stellar sales, and by 2014 had moved into the automotive history books of what once was.
It takes guts to admit that you were wrong, and it takes even big cojones to come back with a similar sized vehicle. Truth be told the SUV market has also changed over the last decade with SUVs growing increasingly larger, just like the population. Subaru appears to have been ahead of its time back in 2005 when 3-row SUV’s didn’t proliferate our roads, and minivans still reigned supreme for getting the platoon to school. But times have changed and so the new Ascent is the company’s answer to the latest trend.
The Ascent is also Subaru’s largest vehicle to date, with 142 mm longer wheelbase and 134 mm longer in length than the Tribeca, so yes passenger comfort has been greatly increased. The midsize SUV is built on the company’s Global Platform, a chassis that is easily adaptable; serving as the basis for everything from their Impreza and Crosstrek to the Ascent.
Available in four trim levels – Convenience, Touring, Limited and Premier - with the entry level 8-passenger Convenience starting at a meager $36,695. Regardless of trim, there’s a new 2.4L direct-injected, turbocharged boxer four cylinder dolling out 260 horses and 277 lb-ft of torque through the High-torque Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission).
Talk to anyone who’s ever driven a Subie in less than ideal conditions and they’ll swear by the symmetrical full-time all-wheel-drive system. A new feature, X-Mode, pushes the traction envelope even further; at the push of a button, it monitors and controls four different vehicle dynamics, including engine, transmission, torque splitting and braking.
There’s a lot of standard driver-assistance technology in each Ascent without having to step up to trim levels, Items like automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist through the company’s EyeSight system. The base model gets a 6.5 inch infotainment screen while upper trim buyers will see an 8 inch screen. GPS however is only available in the two higher end trims (Limited and Premier). Both Touring and Limited are available in either seven or eight passenger configurations with captain’s chairs taking up the second row. My tester, the Premier trim comes only with the second row captains chairs. While all trims get heated front buckets it’s only the two higher trims that pamper their second row passengers with heated outboard seats. The third row looks a lot more inviting than some of it’s competitors but it’s still on the tight side with limited leg room. Still bear in mind this is a mid-size seven passenger and the seats are padded and comfortable to keep the small fry happy for longer drives. Oh and a pair of third-row USB charging ports become available in the Limited trim and are in addition to the standard two you’ll find in the front and second rows.

Whether you’re out in the boonies or negotiating city streets, the Ascent doesn’t feel like a large bulky SUV. With above average handling and a minimum of body roll for a three-row SUV, Subaru’s use of the boxer engine and its advantageous low center of gravity immediately become apparent. It’s stable, with a soft luxurious ride and is generally quiet during normal highway cruising. But it does get loud when pushed hard.
Is it perfect?
The drone of the CVT does get annoying but once you get passed that, the Ascent is typically Subaru; it does everything what it’s supposed to and does it well. I averaged 9.8L/100 km which is unprecedented in a 7-passenger sport ute. It may not be overly luxurious but you get what you pay for. I know my Subaru driving friends will all be looking at the Ascent when the time comes to turn in their current drives, and that alone will keep this big Subaru around for a long time to come.

RIDGELAND, Miss. – The 16th Annual Renaissance Euro Fest Classic European Automobile & Motorcycle Show returns to Ridgeland October 13-14, 2023. Euro Fest is an all-European automobile and motorcycle show held at Renaissance at Colony Park, an upscale, open-air shopping destination in Ridgeland, Mississippi. It is a free event to both spectators and participants and in the past fifteen years has attracted over 200,000 attendees that have come to view over 1,600 entries from twelve Southeastern states. 15,000 spectators are expected this year. Events kick off on Friday, October 13 with the escorted BMW Renaissance Road Rally Drive beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Renaissance at Colony Park. The caravan rolls to the Town of Livingston and returns to Renaissance at Colony Park at 4:30 p.m. Participants, media, and sponsors are invited to the “Packet Pick Up Party” and reception at Lee Michael’s from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The main event opens to the public at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14. Attendees can enjoy a Bavarian-style beer garden, music from Polka band the Delta Krauts, and fare from food truck Barbeque Shine as they peruse the exhibits. Over 150 vehicles will be shown and judged, plus 75 vehicles (not yet 25 years old) will be displayed in a Club Corral on the east lawn of the Renaissance. Awards will be presented at 4:00 p.m. and the show will conclude at 5:00 p.m. New this year, the Madison Career and Technical Center will display their Volkswagen “Baja Bug”, a unique vehicle built over a 2.5-year period. The course, made up of students from four local high schools, is a job training program for students who go straight from the class to working at dealerships such as Porsche and Ford.
