Back at it with the DC Santa Read Along.
Batman #239 has been extensively covered by Ink and Havendance, but my own notes on this issue are:
Silent Night, Deadly Night: it's one of the more serious superhero comics story I've seen so far (Forbidden Tales of Dark Manson #15 was definitely darker); it's by Denny O'Neil and Denny has a good time leaning into some classic Bruce Wayne/Batman themes - our 'villain', Tim here, is robbing Santas collecting donations, but it's because he's been laid off from the toy factory and has to care for his orphan niece Betsy (who is a complete poppet). Tim goes to attack the owner of the toy factory, Evans, but has a change of heart because Evans' heart is giving out (and he has money but no love or family). Batman chases after Evans in the surprise empty sleigh left by Santa with Betsy in tow, then takes both Tim and Evans to the hospital in it. There, Bruce offers Tim a job at Wayne Enterprises if he can't find anything else, and we all learn a valuable lesson that stealing is wrong, but that love and family is more important than things.
I will point out here that this is a story from 1973, and the discussion in it is all about what drives crime in lower class communities - desperation. This is not a new theme for Bat comics!
The Loneliest Man in the World (reprint from Batman #15):
No actual Santa here, there's some standard Christmas charity from Bruce and Dick:
I do love the flying Christmas Batplane though. It's frankly ridiculous and I love it.

This story is dedicated to @georgiegems . A few times in Outlined on My Finger, Printed in My Heart, I referenced a fanfiction Blaine was reading. That fanfiction just so happens to be written by my good friend @gleefulpoppet, (who wrote the “introduction” in this story—you’ll understand when you get to it). Georgie commented on Chapter 26, “They have obviously talked through [and] about their sexual fantasies, needs and boundaries and it enhanced their experience, made it enjoyable and safe for both of them. That is Poppet standards of communication right there!” Well, my friend, here is a story for you! This story is set after Chapter 30 and before Chapter 31.
GFF Prompt: “If we’re going to do this, we’re going to need—” “A plan?” “No! Codenames! Cool ones!” GFF Words: Plan, Codenames, Dorks
Title: Poppet’s Standards of Communication
Beta: @teddyshoney
Word Count: 2062
Summary: Kurt and Blaine are excited to read and learn from Poppet as she releases her first book into the world. Their communication is already pretty good. How much better will it get after reading her advice?

Apologies if this is a vague question, but i was in the process of making a charm of sorts for my soon-to-be long distance lover, and i wonder if you have any ideas? I’ve made love charms in the past but i’m kinda drawing a blank for the distance part. Bring Mercury in the mix? make it into a “come back to me” sort of charm? I’m on a slight time crunch so i’m sorta scrambling. Thank you!! :)
There's an old folk charm that comes to mind, usually filed as a "Come back to me you unfaithful shit" type work, that appears with a lot of variation, but most usually involves throwing salt or some other substance, over a fire, while speaking the name of the person and commanding them to return. Usually you see it recommended as a triplicate, but there are variations where it's only repeated once. perhaps something like that could be leveraged less as a "stop following your genitals everywhere" and more as a "distance need not separate us." type thing. could also just tie some poppets together, that's pretty standard tripe, or get ahold of his undies and tie a knot in them (while he's away) or rub his clothes with valerian root. (while he's away) You could definitely petition mercury, especially if means of travel is consistently a problem. You'll probably want to check out the astrological weather and find a decent enough election for it first. I've never really run into too much trouble with mercury, but potential is definitely there for surprises, May not matter all that much if you propitiate them enough or already are in the habbit of petitioning them, or have done a lot of remediation, but always better safe than sorry, and it might not do all that much if your natal mercury is positioned well enough that it supports your love life well naturally, but given the nature of long distance relationships and communications it's certainly within a sphere mercury *could* affect, even if only from a strictly logistical perspective. Luckily posterity has left us with a dearth of charms to return a (usually straying) lover that could fairly easily be leveraged against distance rather than disinterest.

Winter Witchcraft
(Taught in @thealexandriarchives on 1/17/20)
Winter. The solid dark earth, bright swirling snow, prickling sharp ice, stark reaching branches, echoing warm silence. It can appear in a variety of different ways around the globe depending on the local season. I shall do my best in today’s class to give inspiration and tools that apply to as many persons as possible. I apologize in advance if this Midwest USA witch is a bit too used to intense winters and forgets to adjust as much for those in more temperate zones.
When it comes to the season of winter, it is most commonly associated with snow, ice, cold, all those Hallmark style holiday card scenes with snowmen, scarves, and white covered buildings. At it’s core however, winter is really just your area’s fallow period. It doesn’t have to involve cold or snow; just the time when things are not growing (or not growing as much). Locals may tend to be more inclined to stay indoors; regardless of the weather, and just be more lethargic and measured in their time.
When it comes to incorporating winter and it’s attributes and power into your witchcraft, the main ingredients you’ll want to work with are:
Dirt: Fallow dirt is mighty! Like a hibernating bear, it’s carefully collecting all those nutrients and minerals and saving them up for spring to share in full with local flora and fauna again! It is stable, strong, and patient. A good ingredient for spellwork involving breaking a habit, defensive protection (long term wards especially!), prosperity and abundance spells; especially slowly building ones like a long term money spell, spells or glamours relating to hiding or camouflage, encouraging a relationship to remain stable and grow, and many more. Though it should be strictly collected/harvested during the winter, you can store it year round and it retains it’s Winter attributes.
Snow/Ice: The most obvious winter witchcraft ingredient, this will mostly be used in a melted water form but some examples I’ll offer use solid snow and ice and the melting of it is part of the spell. It’s a good ingredient for: cleansing, freezing a person or problem, healing, banishing, creativity boosting (especially in physical crafts). Like with winter dirt, you can only collect during specific times but can store year round. You can even refreeze in your freeze if you have a spell that requires it to melt in some fashion that you want to cast in spring or summer.
Specific types of snow and ice correspondences: https://orriculum.tumblr.com/post/ 168151692633/winter-correspondences.
My own post on using snow in witchcraft: https://stygiantarot.tumblr.com/post/181955654194/ we-just-had-our-first-real-snow-here-in-ohio-and
Stones: Stones found in winter can have a special sort of power to them. Despite being unchanged physically year round (besides temperature), stones absorb energies readily. They are attuned to what is going on in the locale seasonally despite not directly changing themselves. It is because of this physical permanence that they are more easily able to be energetically sensitive. I like to use them especially in divination work (whether directly in creating runes or oracle sets or indirectly in boosting divination power and focus). They hold that deep quiet and patience of the season deeply under their hard surfaces. They also make excellent spellwork batteries and anchors for warding or enchanting.
Sticks/Pinceones/Flora castoffs: Those things that trees and shrubs drop are especially potent in winter as well. A weathered stick, a prickly pinecone, even some nuts and seeds are cast off during the fallow season and can be used in spellwork. These tend to be good for intentions relating to growth, protection, spirit work, psychic prowess boosting, and creativity as well as associations related to the plant it came from.
Cold weather Flora: Evergreens, hearty flowers like heather, and witch hazel, and early flowers like snowbells or daphne; there are still some plants that thrive even in chilly temps or fallow growing periods. Keep a sharp eye out in your local area for what remains or becomes vibrant during your winter and you can incorporate it into your spellwork. It would have the attributes of that plant, but “jazzed” up a bit during the season of winter when it remains strong amongst other flora that wait for spring or summer.
Citrus/Spices/Seasonal kitchentry: Despite it’s bright sun and summer associations, most citrus fruits are winter growing and this is an appropriate time to incorporate them into drinks and foods to bring some sun into your fallow period. It can help with healing (anti-depression especially), inspiration, solar magic, and creativity. There are also the warmer spices like those used in mulling ciders and wine that are good to use during this season to inject warmth and power into your spellwork. Take a look at what might grow or be commonly used in cooking during your area’s fallow period and incorporate them into your kitchen work in drinks, food, even baking!
Now to build spellwork and crafting ideas. The following are from my own grimoire that you may use or be inspired by!
Snowmen poppets: draw or write a taglock on a piece of paper and put it into a snowman! The intention of the spell takes effect on the target as the snowman melts.
Snow cleansing baths: put a bit of snow in your bath for a soothing ritual bath. Imagine all your worries falling away like a gentle snowfall drifting from the sky.
Winter Jar of Dirt: collect some winter dirt into a special jar, leave a bit of room at the top and put in scraps of paper that outline things you need to have growth or be more stable throughout the year. Feel free to double down by drawing some sigils on the jar for growth and stability.
Create a tool: use a winter stone or collection of them to create a tool for your practice. This can be a divination set, a spellcasting battery, an enchanted focus stone, even a painted offering, etc!
Use that crockpot or bake!: This is the time to do something warm and slow. A soup in a crockpot, a slow roasted dinner, those favorite cookies or brownies you remember from days of yore. You can also focus on a warm drink recipe; chocolate, cider, tea, coffee, wine, etc! They all can be made intentioned with spices and flavoring additions while they warm up to toasty soothing temps!
Room and floor sprays: use a bit of snow or ice, added to standard water, along with winter focused herbs and spices infused and put in a spray bottle for room spray or fl oor wash. You can focus the intentions as needs but a good one would be a pre-cleansing treatment for that “spring cleaning” physical cleaning many do! Or an energizing or inspiration spray to keep out seasonal blues and lethargy.
Enchant a blanket: Take a favorite blanket and enchant it with comfort, warmth, and peace for you to cuddle with during chilly evenings. You can do the same with a favorite towel for after warm baths or showers!
The methodology in creating crafting and spellwork ideas is to think about that fallow period and what you can “harvest” from it; whether it being something directly like snow or dirt. Or something indirectly, like the quiet, the introspection, or even the longer nights to do more lunar focused magic. Spirit work is another strong association in winter months. The slower and quieter season allows for easier connecting often to those not of physical form. Trying visiting a graveyard, park, or museum during your fallow season and seeing what you are able to sense.
Winter is also the time to take stock of your own life and spirituality- just like the earth does during its fallow period. Catalogue and cleanse your tools while you consider if there are any more you need or any you might pass along because you no longer use them. Clean and reorganize your storage and altars or shrines. Spend some time adding to your grimoire or journal those entries you’ve been putting off. Do some shadow work or divination. Write down some clear spiritual goals you’d like to focus on this year (good to put in your Jar of Dirt 😉 ) Do extra research on that area you’ve been debating on delving into.
However, don’t let yourself become too isolated. It’s normal to want some additional space in fallow periods, both personal and seasonal. But it’s important to still have some regular times that you get out of your own headspace. Set reminders for yourself to reach out to your favorite people to at least have a chat even if you don’t have the ability to get out of the house. Connect with online friends and community. Share ideas, thoughts, stories. Go see a movie or to a museum.
Letting winter into your bones doesn’t have to be chilling- it can be like that first breeze when you step outside. A surprise, maybe you gasp for a moment. But it’s exhilarating and revitalizing and reminds you of the beauty and wonder of nature. Even when nature is quiet and stark, she’s there. Just waiting for you to reach out and find her secrets and power to lend you. Go forth and Do the Magic.

The Real Story Behind The Annabelle Doll, And The Other Haunted Dolls You Need To Know About
If you’ve been living under a rock for like, the last, I don’t know, 6 years, then you won’t know squat about the creepy doll phenomenon that’s currently haunting our TV and cinema screens (and at this rate, our nightmares too).
Even though this newer trope combines all the basic-bitch horror movie plot lines – and holes – worthy of scoring a solid ‘rotten tomato’ on IMBD, it turns out that there is a good deal of truth to these tales of terror.
And this is bound to continue with the release of the newest instalment in The Conjuring universe: Annabelle Comes Home (2019).
This film seeks to document her existence in Ed And Lorraine Warrens Occult Museum – an actual place where she still is – and centres around the Warren’s daughter unleashing the dark spirits (and/ or demon) contained within this spooky-ass doll.
And so, it is time to reflect on the real story behind Annabelle herself, and the other haunted dolls in existence.
#squadgoals.
But first, here’s a quick recap of the Annabelle film saga:
Annabelle’s done pretty well for herself.
She’s featured in 4 horror hits, and has even starred in 3 self-titled movies to boot. We meet her first in The Conjuring as an introduction to the Warrens and she is effectively used to combat a classic horror film trope: all scary movies start with the obligatory first 30 minutes where they introduce the characters, the peaceful home setting, and the references to past trauma which will be once again inflicted later on. Then they get going with the stuff you actually paid for.
But not here, not in The Conjuring.
Annabelle is used to give us a taste of the terror that awaits us once we get past the opening titles. And lord, she does it well. We also get introduced to the basic-bitch doll hauntings that go hand in hand with any horror film; doors moving, writing on notes and on the ceiling, the classic rocking chair, and any other generic hauntings you can pull out of your ass and type up into a screenplay.
Anyway, the story of Annabelle across the films so far is that a child called Annabelle dies, and the parents call upon all the higher powers – yes, all the higher powers – in the midst of their grief to allow her to return.
‘Something’ pretends to be their daughter, and upon witnessing such things, they give this ‘Something’ permission to enter the doll.
The ‘Something’ then proceeds to fuck shit up, and thankfully the parents lock away the doll with all of the protections necessary. Round of applause, everyone.
Cue entrance of young, innocent girls – who, just so happen to be orphans because tropes – who accidentally unleash the terror of the doll. That special ‘something’ trapped within Annabelle is unleashed and possesses one of the girls; she escapes, gets adopted whilst pretending to not be a demon (easier said than done, actually), and years later kills her adoptive parents after she hunts down the original Annabelle doll, and cries onto it to re-possess the doll.
This takes us to the first movie – which, yeah, it’s not great, not worth a watch – and ends with Annabelle being purchased from an antique shop, supposedly as a gift for the owners we met in the first Conjuring flick.
And it turns out that whilst the totality of the events aren’t completely true, the tagline of ‘based on a true story’ isnt too far-fetched.
The real-life Annabelle is one of the most renowned paranormal objects in the world, and her fellow haunted friends all seem to tie into the theory that is brought up in The Conjuring: Vessel theory.
Simply put by the Warrens, the doll (like any object) is a vessel for spirits and demons, namely those that want to enter you.
I mean, they could at least take you out for a drink first, god.
The films focus on this invitation aspect, channelling the vampiric vibe of being allowed in, and stick to the classic line of thought: the entities want your soul for a purpose to become idk alive again and no one really understands why but goddamnit it sounds intense.
And as it is a film, it sticks to a simplified version of the actual theories behind haunted dolls in order to cram in as many empty jump scares.
In actuality, there’s a lot more to the theories behind haunted objects, and the rumours of the objects themselves, than is given attention to in Annabelle’s film saga.
The actual theories behind haunted dolls
There are 3 sides to theory that we need to consider here: that of cursed objects, ceremonial objects, and a concept called ‘spirit binding’.
The film groups Annabelle in with the first category, but makes mention of the second group when it comes to introducing the Warren’s museum. Cursed objects come about when energies become attached to objects, and these vessels also are utilised in the ceremonial world.
The earliest history of haunted dolls sticks to this purpose, and its only when the age of the occult hits in the 20th century that stories like Annabelle’s start popping up.
Think effigies or voodoo dolls; anything that can be used for mystical purposes, was. It was believed that spells could transfer person to poppet, and were used to place curses on unfavourable community members.
This enforced binding of spirits to objects is the core of the theory, and still continues today under that rather obvious alias of ‘spirit binding’. Nevertheless, today’s process is rather more positive, and involves rather less-terrifying-small-children-horror-film tropes.
Vessels are laid out, and attachment or banishment rituals are applied. These objects can be taken with you on your adventures to ensure spiritual protection, or to channel some serious spirit squad goals.
And this is what the film gets wrong; the objects discussed here are spirit-based. Nowhere in the theories are demons mentioned, and even in the Bible it is claimed that demons cannot attach themselves to inanimate objects.
It’s this ambiguity used in the films to mis-mash the human possession and object possession together, and the ‘based on the true story’ spiel stops there. And speaking of true stories, it’s now time to discuss all the terrifying tales surrounding our favourite haunted dolls.
The actual Annabelle story
The true story behind this infamous doll sticks closely to the brief encounter detailed in The Conjuring.
Basically, a nurse is given a doll in the twilight years of the occult, in 1975. And shit gets weird. Think the normal hauntings, from noises, to the doll moving by itself.
Concerned, they go to a medium who claims it’s the spirit of Annabelle Higgins. Believing it to be an innocent girl, they treat the spirit and doll nicely. Unfortunately, shit gets weirder.
In a time of desperation, they turn to the Warrens, who say that this is not an innocent spritely spirit. It’s a demon.
The doll is then stored away in the Warren’s museum in a case from which the doll cannot be touched, and it is here that she still resides.
But before you turn out the light to sleep knowing she is stowed away somewhere safe, bear in mind that there are quite a few cases that mirror Annabelle’s story, and although they are rather diverse in the doll-spirit relationship, they are all creepy as fuck.
The true stories behind the rest of Annabelle’s Spooky Squad
Annabelle’s rival in the paranormal world is none other than Robert the Doll. This little fella is reportedly possessed by ‘spirits’, but don’t let the vagueness of this possession fool you. As the original inspiration for Chucky, this doll certainly upholds a level of fame among those intrigued by the paranormal, and the backstory to our least favourite horror film villain starts with a bloke called Otto.
In 1906, Otto was presented a doll – fit in Robert’s sailor’s uniform – by a servant who was known to practice black magic and voodoo.
Yep, that was a definite red flag.
It was believed that the servant’s worship and frequent summoning of spirits possessed this creepy-ass doll. Indeed, he is so haunted that it is rumoured that you must ask to take a picture of him, or you will be haunted by those that take up residency in him.
Next up is Lotta the Doll.
It’s 1972, and some bloke called Kerry Whalton decides to wander around an abandoned building because why not. And its inside this building that he finds a marionette doll.
A quick trip to the archives, and a chance flick through the library books later and he calculates that this doll is believed to contain the spirit of a boy who once lived an odd 200 years before. The building he walked into that fateful day was the property of a man whose son drowned, and his final resting place is inside this doll.
It moves, it emits a pulse, dogs bark at it and attempt to attack it, and paintings fall when in its presence.
Oh, and when it’s put outside, it starts to rain.
Another famous doll is known as the Paula Ubin Barbie.
In 1914, a girl fell of a cliff and subsequently died.
In memoriam of her tragic death, a monument was constructed, and in it was her personal crucifix and a rather large amount of her hair.
Following her passing, a local resident began to have rather peculiar dreams. And in these dreams, a little girl would lead him to a toy shop, and pick out her favourite toy – a barbie.
He took the doll to the monument, and upon setting it down claims he felt the spirit transfer into the barbie and it is believed that her spirit found peace.
Our two final dolls stick to pretty standard supernatural goings-on.
Mandy does the usual: you hear the sound of footsteps, other dolls are knocked over, and she even has her own display case. And Pupa? She bangs on the case, changes position, and even fucks off when she wants to.
Honestly, do they not know how haunted dolls are supposed to behave?

10 Games That are Similar to Animal Jam
FactThe revenue collected by Animal Jam memberships is donated to animal conservatories by National Geographic. Animal Jam is a multiplayer online game (MMORPG) by Smart Bomb Interactive that has got kids hooked. It takes place in the world of Jamaa, where the players can explore different regions. Each environment is different from the rest with museums having different exhibits. The kids once registered, are given animal avatars with randomly generated names according to their avatar and are called Jammers. Players can accessorize their house and even adopt virtual pets. They can talk to each other using Jam-a-Grams or Safe Chat, a filtered chat which restricts the use of any foul words. Gems are used as a form of currency within the game to buy gifts or trade between players in a store called the Diamond Shop. One of the main benefits is that your kids won't be exposed to online advertising as the site adheres to a strict policy. Craft Supply Correspondences
I’m going to put this under a read more, because I have the feeling I’ll want to tweak this as I use it more, and I’m sure I forgot a lot of great craft supplies.
These are my own personal associations. Tweak as needed. This is a “more like guidelines than actual rules” list. Also throw in color magic as needed! Lots of things lend themselves super well to that. Markers, gems, fabric, paper... you get the idea.
Anyway. Onward!
Beads - Abundance, money, prosperity, business.
Buttons - Prosperity, frugality, independence, luck.
Craft sticks - Structure, stability, strength, justice, leadership. Inflexibility, harm (snap in half for splinters).
Crochet Hook / Knitting Needles - Manifestation, flexibility, customization, bringing together, transformation. A wand.
Fabric - Sleep, hiding, containment, boundaries. Use for: Sachets, pillows, poppets.
Gems (plastic) - Frugality, glamour. Lies, expectations unmet, stinginess, imposter.
Glitter - Love, attraction, beauty, glamour, cleansing, purification. Alternately: making a huge mess of your space, or never truly being rid of something!
Glue - Repair, permanence, bonds.
Hammer - Construction, versatility, direct action, strength. Destruction, bluntness, force, banishing.
Jar - Chalice or offering bowl. Protection, shielding, containment, storing away (energy, feelings, etc). Binding, sealing, keeping separated.
Markers - Creativity, finishing touches, color magic, permanence, community, imagination, child-like innocence or childishness.
Metal - Confidence, self-reliance, protection, courage, strength.
Needle - Clairvoyance, clarity, divination, repairing. Nightmares, piercing, pain.
Paint - Creativity, artistic ability, refreshing the old. Covering instead of fixing.
Paper - Versatility. The 'salt' or 'rosemary' of craft supplies.
Pencil - Creativity, building blocks (sketching), planning, cleansing (by sharpening the old to make a new point), communication. Temporary, wearing down quickly, constant need of maintenance.
Pins - Holding, temporary binding, support, repelling negativity. Curses, piercing, representing pain. Safety pins for a less harsh version.
Ruler - Reliability, structure, tradition, standardization. Rigidity, inflexibility.
Scissors - Ending, trimming away the unwanted, taking only what is needed. Banishing. Athame substitute. Spell breaking, severing, ending.
Stamps - Reliability, beauty
Stickers - Beauty, glamour, love, joy
Tape - Speed, quick fix, versatility. Temporary fix, temporary bind.
Thimble - Protection from harm, shielding.
Thread - Tying, binding, repairing. Weakness in isolation.
Washi Tape - Glamour, beauty. Transitory, impermanence.
Wire - New beginnings, communication. Binding, stress.

This story takes place directly after Poppet’s Standards of Communication, which is in the Outlined on My Finger, Printed in My Heart verse. It is dedicated to @teddyshoney. When she was editing Poppet for me, she asked if we would get to see what the chair and handcuffs for. Well, here you go, my friend.
Get your fans ready… You’ve been warned 😉
GFF Prompt: Person A—“Stop doing this!” Person B—“It’s for science!” Person A—“This isn’t science!” GFF Words: Science, Experiment, Stop
Title: Could I Have This Dance?
Beta: @teddyshoney
Word Count: 1467
Summary: This wasn't exactly what Blaine had in mind when he told Kurt he fantasized about lap dances. He loves it just the same, though, and he'll never think of science the same way again.
You can read it HERE on AO3 or HERE on FF.net.
Songs used in this chapter are all covers as follows, “Dirrty” by Ed Sheeran and “Ignition” by Elle King. I want to say this, too, before anyone says anything in the comments. R. Kelly is a POS…I fully understand, and it is why I did covers for songs for this story.

so uhhh if i wanna put a hex on someone to make them feel guilty for hurting other people, what herbs would i use
Honestly hexcraft is probably the easiest thing to work. Make a poppet (with taglocks if available or else their name and whatever other identification written out and incorporated) out of earthen clay, breathe it to life to transubstantiate it into your enemy, stab the fuck out of it with thorns or pins (which you've also breathed alive/awakened and spoken into Guilt) and that should do it. You could take it a step farther and write out their crimes that should haunt them on scrolls of paper and jam it in the head, or bind it like a mummy with tiny scrolls of the same. If you think creatively and symbolically, details like "what herb" can be googled and slotted in place once you've got a basic ritual format you're pleased with. I don't want to list "herbs for guilt" because I don't honestly feel that's how it works and I tend to wince at those lists of oversimplified correspondences and I really don't want to contribute to them - but any saturnine herb should do the job of guilt if you talk them into it, and Martian herbs can provide the burn. Follow standard procedures like placing the poppet in a box painted black to symbolically trap the victim in darkness or drop it in a jar of pointy shit to make them feel trapped, maybe add buckeye nuts or other eyes to make them feel seen for what they are, it's really more about brainstorming what you want them to feel and reconstructing that stimulus symbolically through ritual and the help of whichever plant allies itself to your purpose at the time. If you're not yet good at speaking to plants to sing out their willingness, you can always use divination to commune with them via the abstractive layer of a pendulum or whichever device you prefer.
