Trivia Tuesday: It’s Complicated
Tumblr media
Writers: give a “behind the scenes” look at one of your stories. This could be things that got removed or changed, the origins of ideas/details, whatever you like!
Readers: share bits of trivia from canon and challenge others to create something based on that trivia - fic, art, or something else! (I once made a crossword puzzle)
I did this once then forgot about it, but I think I’m going to start doing this again once a month. If you want a future “Behind the Scenes” look into one of my stories, feel free to message me with your request. In the meantime, this month’s pick is one of my recent Yuri!! On Ice fics, “It’s Complicated”.
- Believe it or not, but this story was originally intended to be a COMEDY. Yes, seriously. When I first got the idea, it was going to be all about Yuri's suffering because Otabek and Mila couldn't keep their hands off each other and why can't they just get a room and oh my god they're almost as bad as Viktor and Yuuri – just stop it already! But then I started thinking about why Yuri was acting that way. Having it be because he was jealous and in love with Otabek himself was one possibility, but that storyline is not very original. In fact, that tends to be how a lot of Milabek stories go, with them breaking up so that Yuri and Otabek can get together instead. Which, you know, is fine – I love those kinds of stories myself – but I really wanted to write a story where Mila gets the guy for once. So, then I started to consider the possibility of writing an asexual Yuri who was sex-averse/repulsed, and it just…fit. Around that time, I signed up for Rare Ships on Ice. As it turned out, the person I matched with loved the idea of asexual characters and had Yuri/Otabek/Mila as one of their preferred ships. Up until that point, I was still planning on Milabek being endgame, with Yuri coming to terms with the fact that he was asexual, but when I got my assignment, I decided it might be fun to give writing an OT3 relationship a try. And, thus, queerplatonic Otayuri was added to the story and they BOTH got the guy. (And it turns out I love the three of them together? More people need to write OT3 Yurotila! …Yeah, I just came up with that smush.)
- I mentioned in the notes to Chapter 2 that the "American girl who won silver" was a reference to Ashley Wagner (Mila's real-life inspiration) and that there were a couple of other nods to her in the fic. Did you catch them? The first one was Yuri considering Exogenesis, Part 3 for his short program music. Ashley used it for her free during the 2016-2017 season. And the second one was the fact that Mila had posed nude for a magazine spread celebrating the beauty of athlete's bodies, just like Ashley did.
- I kept going back and forth on the gender of Mila's Canadian hockey player hook-up at the Olympics. In the end, I couldn't decide, so I gave them the gender-neutral name of Riley.
- If you're wondering why Viktor didn't compete in the Team Event, he decided to sit it out so he could just enjoy cheering on Yuuri at the Olympics without having to compete against him. He also wanted to save his strength for the individual event, since he wasn't as young as he used to be. (But mostly it was because I have a soft spot for poor Georgi and wanted him to win a gold medal.) BTW, Canada won the silver and Japan the bronze in the Team Event. (Yeah, Japan has good pairs and ice dancers in this universe.)
- Yuri was originally supposed to skate to "The Firebird" for his new free program. While I was in the middle of writing the story, however, I read an amazing fic called "Here's To The Mess We Make" by FakePlasticSnow, where Yuri ends up choreographing a short program about his feelings for Otabek and planning a free skate with a "fire" theme. Sound familiar? Total coincidence, but it was a little too close to comfort for me, so I changed his free to "The Nutcracker" instead.
- There's a throwaway line about how Yuri doesn't like talking about his mother. His relationship with her is going to be explored more in the sequel, "The Bonds We Choose".
