U.S. Air Force A-10 Warthog jets have taken advantage of clear blue skies almost all year round, along with the immaculate and legendary Rogers Dry Lake Bed area, making Edwards Air Base in California, an ideal candidate to host Agile Combat Employment training, or ACE.

The 412th Edwards Air Base Operations Support Squadron (AFB) received four A-10 Thunderbolt II jets from the 355th Ward of Davis-Monthan Air Base, Arizona, and a small team of aviators from the 821st Contingency Response Squadron of Travis Air Base, California, to carry out Agile Combat Employment (ACE training) on June 27, 2022.

"ACE is the fastest way to do things," said Sergeant Jordan Whitworth of the 412th Operations Support Squadron. “You have an aerodrome manager who can upload and download aircraft and talk about ground aircraft so you can have a team of 10, 15, 20 men doing a job of 100 or 150 men and it is much smaller. Thus, we can land on the bed of a lake or in a flat area in the middle of nowhere, ride, start landing in a few hours and take off before someone realizes they are there."

Adverse threats to U.S. Air Force operations at advanced bases can deny U.S. power projection, overload traditional defense projects, impose prohibitive losses and lead to the failure of joint missions. To meet these challenges, the ACE transfers operations from centralized physical infrastructure to a network of smaller and dispersed locations or cluster bases.

Contingency operations may require aviators to use ACE concepts and operate in austere environments, and Edwards Air Base offers contingency response units, such as the 821st CRS, an area to improve and expand their capabilities to be multi-capable aviators (MCA).

The Rogers Dry Lake Bed dry lake was the center of attention during the ACE training. The lake bed is the most prominent natural landmark of Edwards Air Base and, with about 65 square miles, is visible thousands of feet in the air. The natural hardened clay of the dry lake is capable of supporting about 250 pounds per square inch. It is wide and strong enough to withstand space shuttle landings and other historical experimental aircraft, such as the X-1 and X-15.

"Edwards gives us the perfect opportunity to use a dry pond bed that is already being used for a test facility," said Sergeant Denver Davis of the 821st CRS. “We can implement these concepts in a safe environment with nearby facilities.”

Before the aviators of the 821st CRS could land the A-10 of the 355th Wing at Rogers Dry Lake Bed, they evaluated their condition and suitability for the mission.

"We evaluated an aerodrome in an austere location," said Sergeant Denver Davis of the 821st CRS. “We landed the four A-10s in various locations to verify that we have the ability to integrate with fighter squadrons and attack squadrons.”

After the 821st CRS team successfully landed the A-10, they once again inspected the lakebed runways, observing the grooves of the tires created by the aircraft landing gears.

Davis explained that the MCA skill set is vital for aviators who can be deployed in different areas of the world, with different missions, such as humanitarian aid or evacuations. ACE training also further improves MCA skills, allowing them to train with different types of aircraft, something that Edwards Air Base ground teams are adept at due to the fleet of various fighters, bombers and cargo structures of the 412th Test Wing.

As already reported, the Michigan National Guard organized an agile combat exercise east of Munising, Alger County, Michigan, on June 29, 2022.

The exercise featured several novelties, including the first time that a U.S. Air Force aircraft had weapons (in the form of AIM-9 Sidewinders, JDAM bombs, AGM-65 Mavericks, rockets and designating pods) loaded on a public road. The weapons used in the exercise were inert.

The A-10 Warthog can be serviced and operated from austere bases with limited facilities near the battle areas. Many of the aircraft parts are interchangeable ?? left and right, including engines, main landing gear and vertical stabilizers.

Designed specifically for approximate air support (CAS), its combination of large and varied types of ammunition, long waiting time, accurate delivery of weapons, austere field capacity and survivability has proven to be invaluable to the U.S. and its allies.

Denver Botanic Gardens

Established in 1951, Denver Botanic Gardens (DBG) has grown from a little group of horticulturally minded citizens into a serious civic organization. Wif a prominent conservatory and core city gardens complemented by a 750-acre suburban campus at Chatfield, DBG has become the nation’s most-visited botanic gardens, consistent with CEO Brian Vogt, fulfilling its stated mission “to connect people with plants, especially plants from the Rocky Mountain region and similar regions around the world.” From an ingenious collection of mostly native plants, it's expanded to incorporate material from everywhere on the planet in addition to forty different gardens. Behind the scenes, DBG is additionally a search institution with scientists using the collections and field studies to find out more about topics like biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability.

Built on a Boneyard

BG's main York Street site occupies the previous area of the first city cemetery’s Catholic section. William H. Larimer, Jr., who founded Denver in 1858, established the cemetery a year later. The town acquired most of the cemetery in 1872 and ran it as City Cemetery. Within the late nineteenth century, City Cemetery increasingly lost customers to newer Riverside (1876), Fairmount (1890), and Mount Olivet (1890) Cemeteries. In 1890 the town converted much of the location to Congress Park, the larger western portion of which was reorganized in 1910 as Cheesman Park. Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery continued to work until 1950 when the town of Denver bought the eighteen-acre site and agreed to get rid of its roughly 6,000 bodies.

An estimated several hundred bodies still lie under the gardens and neighboring Cheesman Park. During recent construction in and around the gardens, about fifty bodies are unearthed and respectfully reburied.

Birth of the Gardens

Incorporated February 3, 1951, just like the Botanical Gardens Foundation of Denver, DBG was a consolidation of existing horticultural groups. Under the direction of leading nurseryman and naturalist George W. Kelly, DBG initially planned its gardens within the southeast a part of City Park. In 1952 Gladys and John Evans II paid local landscape gardener Saco Rienk DeBoer $10,000 to plan 100 acres of gardens there. In 1956 DeBoer laid out a rocky canyon simulating a high mountain canyon, which has been restored in recent times. A stream flowing through the canyon led to an outsized lily pond. DeBoer donated forty-seven flowering crabapple trees, whose blossoms his experiments showed to be hardy enough for Denver’s late frosts, while the Denver Rose Society gave 4,000 roses in beds maintained to the present day.

In 1957 DBG leased from the US Forest Service the 169-acre Mt. Goliath Alpine Study Area on the Mount Evans Highway about fifty miles from Denver. A two-mile nature trail meanders through a rare forest of 1,500-year-old bristlecone pines, a major timberline attraction to this day. The trail is known for Michael Walter Pesman, a landscape gardener, author, and teacher who helped found the DBG and championed native plants.

The Gardens

In 1958 Ruth and James Waring purchased the mansion at 909 York Street to offer to DBG as its headquarters. Designed by Jules Jacques Benoit Benedict, the massive two-story residence was originally inbuilt in 1926. The house features grey stucco walls trimmed with stone and brick beneath a steep, green terra-cotta roof.

Next to the new headquarters, in 1958 DBG began to rework the city-owned grounds of the Old Catholic cemetery into gardens. Nationally prominent San Francisco landscape gardener Garrett Eckbo planned the gardens with water features and plantings that have grown to incorporate Colorado high plains, rose, and vegetable gardens also as Saco DeBoer’s Rocky Mountain Garden. DBG also boasts North America's largest collection of plants from cold climates around the world. The Japanese Gardens, designed by Koichi Kawana, opened in 1979. The adjacent Bill Hosokawa Bonsai Pavilion, honoring a Denver Post editor and leader of the Colorado Japanese community, opened in 2012. A Home Demonstration Garden offers suggestions for home gardeners, while the world's first Xeriscape Demonstration Garden opened in 1987 to showcase low-water gardening.

Boettcher Conservatory and Center

The Boettcher Foundation, whose money came in large part from the perfect Cement Company, funded much of DBG’s construction and encouraged the utilization of concrete throughout. Even the ground’s lamps are concrete “trees” with globe lights posing as fruits.

Concrete is employed most notably within the gardens’ signature building, the Edna C. and Claude K. Boettcher Memorial Conservatory. Opened in 1966, the conservatory was designed by Denver architects Victor Hornbein and Edward D. White, Jr. Their highly original design uses faceted Plexiglas panels between interlaced, cast-in-place concrete arches soaring fifty feet above tropical trees. The panels are sloped to stop condensation from raining on visitors. Inside, during a humid, warm climate, some 600 species are cultivated amid waterfalls and pools constructed during a sloped, naturalistic environment. The raw concrete edifice features finely detailed flagstone paving and trims, oak doors in steel frames, and geometric stained and leaded glass doors and windows. The conservatory complex includes greenhouses, storage, and laboratories. Hornbein also designed the Bromeliad House, added to the West End of the conservatory in 1981 for its namesake tropical flowering plants.

A spacious new building, Boettcher Memorial Center, opened on the northeast side of the conservatory in 1971. Designed to architecturally blend in with the conservatory, the newer building opens into a spacious stone-floored lobby wif a waterfall, pools, and lots of plants. The building originally housed a 400-seat Horticulture Hall, three classrooms, meeting rooms, a plant prep room, the Kathryn Kalmbach Herbarium, and therefore the Helen Fowler Library.

Kidnappers! Toys choking kids! Alar in apple juice! Peanuts stuck in windpipes! Stalkers! Rapists! Radiation from household appliances! Murderers! Gangs! Fetal Alcohol Syndrome! Car jacking! Tylenol causes liver damage! Milk Cartons with missing kids! If you fuck up just a little, your kid is screwed!

Welcome to the 1980s where childhood danger became the new obsession along with designer goods, buns of steel, big hair, cell phones, and greed being good. In many decades that traced the growth of mothers in the workplace (check the 1940s), there was moral panic about juvenile delinquents and latchkey kids going bad, there were 19.5 million working mothers by 1984, also 6/10 women with children under eighteen. Mothers of preschool children working had doubled since 1970 and it was 15% higher for African-American women because unemployment for black fathers was 10.2% compared with 5% for white fathers. And these women were not making the big bucks to afford clothes and lifestyles seen on Dynasty and Falcon Crest, where they’d mostly work in retail, clerical, service, or factory positions and daycare workers earned less than most clerks of liquor stores. 

In 1984, aside from the fictitious case of the disappearance of Barbara Holland and the re-appearance of the thought to be dead Will Byers the previous year, there were two media events that captured the public fascination with child endangerment: the McMartin daycare scandal and the premiere of The Cosby Show (it was a more naive time) which was a typical sitcom except it featured two parents who worked outside the home in white-collar professions and focused on an African-American family. It showed the contradictions of what 1980s moms lived with: you can’t trust your kids with just anyone or leave them alone, you can have a demanding job and the loving family made for tv, act as paranoid as an FBI agent, be the spontaneous mom, and be constantly aware.

These media panics also happened around the same time the Reagan Administration was a big thing; he was aided by the regressive STOP ERA and Religious Right which led to a huge anti-feminist backlash in policies and the media. Women’s magazines scared moms about what could go wrong with their kids and exploited the fears of the public. Around the same time the McMartin daycare scandal was a thing, the government refused to fund daycare centers for millions of kids and was a result of such coverage. The War Against Women had started and programs benefiting women and children were in it’s crosshairs as being “too expensive” and “trickle down economics” will help anyways. So while the Chrysler Corporation and the Savings and Loans industry were given financial life rafts, programs like WIC (Womens, Infants, and Children) were cut mortality rates for infants of color (which declined in the 1970s) started climbing again and family leave was virtually non-existent. Parents magazine published a later-debunked warning in 1982, that children in daycare will become hoodlums. Moms were also warned kids will pick up lice (also in Little League or in the classroom) from daycares. 

The roots of this sensationalization of childhood perils stared in the mid 1970s with it’s peak a decade later, where Ladies Home Journal dumped Bruno Bettelheim for Geraldine Carro’s “Mothering” column where she was a mom giving guidance to other moms where she acknowledged that “motherhood rates mixed reviews” and she promised to offer opinions rather than impose them as “For too long, we’ve been living by other people’s books” and featured short pieces with titles on how to pick a pediatrician or teach the kids to cook safely. What was meant to soothe and offer empowerment ended up striking terror with warnings about all the things that could kill kids and that summer camps were the sources of “close to 100 deaths and 250,000 accidents” in 1974 and moms were urged to investigate the camp’s accreditation, the camper-counselor ratio, the number of life preservers in boats, all the codes were met by state standards, the lifeguards had Red Cross training, and all the counselors were experienced. Imagine what happened when Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp came out...

If you tossed your baby in the air, you could risk whiplash and hemorrhage of blood vessels feeding into the brain. But kids can’t get new babysitter and crib on the same day or kid will freak and kids got poisoned a lot from eating plants and flowers. Also kid’s sleepwear had to be flame retardant but washed with warm water, high-phosphate laundry detergent, no soap or bleach, no fabric softener or they will be rendered non-retardant. Ages where kids need to learn swimming was disputed, even Santa was scary or teaches them to lie, buy simple toys, costumes needed to be flame retardant and have reflective tape strips on the costumes and bags, kids needed flashlights or can only trick or treat in the daylight hours, kids can’t wear masks anymore, and all treats need to be examined.  Then in 1977, Carro asked how parents can protect kids without making them fearful. Hrrrrmmmmmm......

There have been missing children before in the past, even in that sweet long ago when people hardly bothered to lock their front doors at night, one of the most notorious early cases that have been exploited by the media was the Etan Patz case where 6 year old Etan was kidnapped in downtown New York City on May 1979, before getting on his school bus, there was a huge effort to find him locally and in the media but the case has remained unsolved until 2010 when his killer was found and it was 9 years since he was declared dead. Perhaps the most influential case was that of Adam Walsh, son of John Walsh from America’s Most Wanted, who was kidnapped from the toy department at a Florida store and was made into a TV movie. In March 1984, the missing for a month ten year old Kevin Collins made the cover of Newsweek magazine. The media had exploited these tragic cases with wildly exaggerated figures soon circulated in the media, what was a small number of cases became sensationalized to make people think kids were being snatched every time they took a breath.

On March 28 1984 NBC’s Tom Brokaw reported “The fear is thick around Denver these days. A number of kidnappings have made everyone nervous--parents, children, and police.” Parents were driving their kids to school rather than let them wait on the bus stop and left the school after seeing their kid enter the building, such stories hardly explored what could be done as a society and community to protect children. No you were on your own.

Late March 1984, headlines talked about a daycare on Manhattan Beach, California, this daycare being McMartin Preschool where seven nursery teachers were arraigned on over 100 counts of child molestation. Virginia McMartin, age 76 and on a wheelchair, presided over the day care center where she and her family members allegedly drugged, fondled, and molested at least 125 children and killed cuddly animals in front of them. 90% of Los Angeles residents surveyed believed that Ray Buckey and his grandmother Virginia to be guilty. Children were interviewed by therapists where they were videotaped and used puppets. As it turned out, the children were badgered by therapists who used leading questions and threats to get the kids talking. From 1989 to 1990, California received at least 440, 000 reports of child abuse, 84% deemed to be unfounded, and 8,448 of the cases were defined as sexual abuse. Suddenly, as the media warned, you couldn’t trust very many people with your children. In other news, the founder of Children’s Theater Company in Minneapolis, John Clark Donahue was forced to resign after allegations of molesting three boys and Little Rascals Day Care in North Carolina became notorious when it was the owner and cook (owner’s conviction was overturned). There was news of fathers molesting their daughters. On May 21st, there was a Los Angeles teacher brought to court on charges of molestation at the elementary school and both ABC and CBS reported that a religious boarding school for boys in Walterboro, South Carolina had beaten and abused boys. Then in June, CBS and ABC reported on a fundamentalist commune in Island Pond, Vermont that was raided with 100 children taken from their homes because it was alleged their elders and parents abused them. The FBI got involved, saying groups of people abuse kids and circulate a book titled “How to Have Sex with Kids”. Obviously these stories had the subtext that no place was safe. In 1985, CBS announced that a church run day care had children suffering broken bones linked to violence (a total of eleven broken arms and legs) and Missouri exempted church run centers from licensing. 

Even “Rockwellian”, small-town, Christian (and White) American places were dens of abuse. Jordan, Minnesota featured 24 defendants (factory workers, housewives, and a grandma) who were part of a “sex ring” and charged with more than 400 counts of sexually abusing dozens of children including their own kids. As Michaels and Douglas noted, a central theme was the failure of government agencies to oversee day care centers and catch molestation in time but Reagan’s administration kept their fingers in their ears singing “La la la can’t hear you la la la”. Geraldo Rivera did a sensationalist show on Satanism that played on adult fears of their teens. And Priests were being outed as having molested altar boys and other young men, like a priest in Henry, Louisiana where he admitted sexually abusing at least 35 boys and was sentenced to 20 years hard labor. The media was talking childhood abuse more seriously with 22% of adults saying they were victims of sexual abuse as children who never told anyone or when they did, nothing was done to the abuser. 

Back to old Virginia McMartin, follow-up stories assuring people that child care centers weren’t dens of rampant abuse weren’t publicized for example. Raymond Buckey’s defense attorney found two doctors who said that one of the children told them that it was his own father who “poked” him in the anus and the boy’s mother Judy Johnson who circulated the charges against them was known to be mentally ill and had trouble distinguishing between what’s real and what’s not. She also accused a Los Angeles school board member of molesting her son and claimed kid was injured by an elephant and forced to drink baby’s blood. The children initially denied abuse, Kee MacFarlane the therapist had the kids name gas station attendants, community leaders, and store clerks as molesters and she came up with the name “naked movie star” for a game the teachers supposedly made the kids play. Jurors viewing the tapes of the interviews were appalled and it turned out Kee had an affair with Wayne Satz, television reporter for KABC who broke the McMartin story. After nearly 6 years and $15 million, Ray Buckey and his mother were found not guilty and there was a hung jury and still not found guilty. Sadly he was viewed as a loner who liked to go commando in shorts and a mama’s boy with more shorts than brains. Virginia died in 1995, Peggy McMartin Buckey died in 2000, and Ray Buckey who was incarcerated for five years during the trials later went to law school and changed his name and moved elsewhere to have a family. Meanwhile in Jordan, cases were falling apart with one couple getting aquitted and vowed to regain custody of their three sons. Only one person plead guilty: James Rud, who lied and implicated others. 

“It was all Momma’s fault!” I’m exaggerating but the public imagination linked day care centers with child sexual abuse, molesters targeted kids from “broken homes” (read single moms not like dysfunctional families with distant parents) and you couldn’t trust Mr. Wilson next door. The subtext clearly targeting working mothers or moms considering going into the workplace and leaving their kids in programs after school before picking them up. Of course Susan Faludi in her book Backlash, revealed that kids were twice as likely to be abused at home than in day care but media panics tend to focus on what’s juicy rather than facts. In her study of working moms in magazines, Kathryn Keller stated:

Each negative image of day care and the implication behind it that women should not be working but should be at home with their children was countered by a positive image.

Moms were surrounded by mixed messages that served them guilt and paranoia, it was nice that issues that were swept under the rug were given the attention they deserved, but it was used as an indictment of non-traditional family structures and women not feeling they have to sacrifice their autonomy at the service of their families or stay in terrible marriages for “the good of the children”. It’s best I leave this dreary part (before heading to sitcoms and humor and magazines) with Tamme Dawson from GLOW to empower all women and snap back at the powers that be.

The local hockey team, the Kepler Cosmos, is going against our bitter rivals, the Snowshoe Swans, this Friday, so be sure to get your tickets and support them. As is usual for Wednesdays at this point, I don’t have much news to report. At least, not officially. I was hallucinating a LOT! Oh my gosh, it looked like that yellow one, that thing in my little pony like a Pegasus and it was CRAZY! LIKE, ACTUAL FEATHERED WINGS! Holy s***! And I screamed and went backward a couple steps and I then I started backin’ away saying like “oh my god, it’s Fluttershy don’t kill me Fluttershy!” And I think that pissed it off! It was like the deer looked so… It looked so, so pissed. like, it glared at me. it started staring me down with its little eyes and then f****** CHARGED and I ran SO FAR, right outta the forest. I had a near death experience with a deer with wings and it hates me now because I called it My Little Pony. Oh god angry deer. Pegasus. Degasus. How’s that Angelo, what’s that about?

Angelo: Oh, wow, that’s… something. I’ve never heard of a deer pegasus before. I’ll, uh, I’ll look into that and get back to you. I hope you’re okay, wherever you ended up, hopefully you’re safe now. I’d recommend not going back, wherever that was, and maybe just staying away from drugs for a bit. Uh, who’s next?

Caller: Hey, I was out with my nephew yesterday and I saw this real big bird just standing and staring from on top of the Pizza Hut sign. Couldn’t really tell what it looked like, it was way high up, but it had black feathers and big yellow eyes. Real mean-lookin’ guy. Ominous, almost, like you know how the black birds are omens? Yeah, I dunno. But considering what’s happened to that sign in the past, it seems a little scary, y’know?

Angelo: Well, that doesn’t sound good. Maybe stay away from the sign for a while, if you can. Hopefully the bird will go away and not knock it down. Depending on their schedule and yours, try to spend time with them, and be prepared to take no for an answer. A lot of the time, unless you’re making your romantic intentions very clear, people just might not want to hang out or they’re otherwise busy. Even if your intentions are clear, they might either not like you or just aren’t ready for a relationship. I’m gonna say, unless you’re being creepy, nine times out of ten it’s not personal when you get rejected. Alright, who’s up next?

One Day in Rocky Mountain National Park

The Verdict: RMNP is the 5th most visited national park in the U.S., and while we wouldn't rank it among our top (or bottom) 5 favorite national parks, we enjoyed spending time amidst the beautiful trees, lakes, and wildlife. Know that you must get a reservation in advance to enter the park (at least in 2021). Start your day as early as possible and be prepared for high altitude, crowds, and potentially hazy skies from western U.S. wildfire smoke.

Pro Tips

Get a reservation. If you can't get one well in advance, before they sell out, log onto the National Park Service website the day before your visit a few minutes before 5pm MST. Then, right at 5pm, refresh the page and snag your ticket. This is how we got our 7-9a slot entrance ticket for Bear Mountain Road (which includes access to the park's most popular hikes).

Acclimate to the elevation. If you are coming from out of state with low elevation, try to spend at least 1 day somewhere elevated like Denver or Boulder to get accustomed to higher elevation (both are ~5K feet above sea level), then try to spend a day in Estes Park, just outside RMNP, to get accustomed to even higher elevation (~9K feet above sea level). This should make spending time in the park more physically comfortable if you are unaccustomed to high elevation.

Arrive early on the day of your visit. We went on a Sunday and when we arrived at the park entrance around 7:30 a.m., the Bear Mountain parking lot was already full. We parked at the Park & Ride parking lot and took the shuttle (10-15 min ride) up to the Bear Mountain area, and by the time we left the Park & Ride around 11:30 a.m., the lot was full and there were cars aggressively circling / fighting each other for parking spaces that opened up. The family that took our spot literally had someone physically stand in the spot as we drove off so that another car couldn't take it. When we exited the park around 1:30pm, the line of cars at the entrance station was very long!

Dress in layers. It can get very cold, even in summer! I was glad to have a hat, gloves, and a fleece in the morning and even later in the day by the windy lakes.

Bring food. We read that the park has one place to get food inside, but we didn't see it and it seemed inconvenient.

1-Day Itinerary

(1) Hike to Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, & Emerald Lake

(4.2 mi total on this out and back trail, moderate difficulty, ~2 hrs with a snack break). Earth Trekkers describes this hike perfectly in their excellent RMNP blog post. The hike starts with quite a bit of uphill, which was pretty tough as we hadn't acclimated to the elevation at all, but then it leveled off. We liked Nymph Lake & Dream Lake a lot, and thought Emerald Lake was nice but not quite as special as the first two. We also saw quite a few elk and chipmunks along the trail!

Logistics: Park in the Bear Lake parking lot if you can, otherwise park at the Park & Ride and take the shuttle here (10-15 mins, masks required regardless of vaccination status).

(2) Walk around Bear Lake

(0.6 mi loop, easy, ~20 mins with time to take photos). This is a pretty walk and probably the most popular one in the park!

Logistics: Same as Nymph/Dream/Emerald Lake.

(3) Hike to Alberta Falls, maybe.

We didn't think the falls were that impressive, but we did enjoy more elk sightings and didn't mind getting some extra steps in.

Logistics: It's easiest to start the trail from the Bear Lake area -- you have an easy downhill walk for about half a mile (we think) and then you walk 0.6 mi uphill to the waterfall. On the descent, instead of returning to Bear Lake (which would require a pretty uphill walk), walk all the way down to Glacier Gorge parking lot. You can pick up the shuttle from there to return to the Park & Ride (5-10 mins).

(4) Drive Trail Ridge Road

(48 miles each way). The road has spectacular views of the park with many places to stop and enjoy the vistas and/or hike. Due to wildfire smoke, our views were hazy and we only drove about 30 minutes on it before turning back. The road also takes you up to very high altitudes, which gave me a pretty bad headache and made me incredibly tired and sleepy. I felt better within minutes of leaving the Estes Park area and returning to lower elevation.

(5) Hike Sky Pond. (~10 miles roundtrip). We didn't do this, but Earth Trekkers says it's their favorite hike in the park, and we thought it looked amazing. If we'd had more time to acclimate to the elevation, this would definitely have been on our itinerary!

Getting There

Since we were in Denver, we drove the quickest route, through Boulder, to get there (~1 hr 45 mins on a Sunday early morning). Had it not been smoky, we would’ve taken what we hear is the beautiful Peak to Peak Scenic Byway from Denver,  which is a bit longer. Best case scenario, you’re staying in Estes Park to get used to the altitude and have the shortest commute to the park.

Fayetteville NC

Fayetteville NC is a large city in South Carolina. The Special Operations and Airborne Museum has exhibits about U.S. military history. The Riverside Cape Hatteras Botanical Gardens has many plant species such as camellias, roses and honeysuckle, and an area for children to play.

The Museum of the Cape Hatteras Historical Complex explores the early colonial era and has exhibits about Cape Fear, the state capitol, and the town's waterfront. The Museum also houses an Arsenal Park with a gun range, the 1897 Poe house museum, and several historic buildings. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore preserves one of North Carolina's most scenic beaches. The museum also contains a replica Civil War fort. Visitors to the Museum may bring their lunch.

The City Beautiful and Natural Area is located just north of Fayetteville NC. It includes parklands, lakes, and ponds, along with many parks. This area is considered a natural preserve in the entire Southeast.

The University of Fayetteville has a campus located in the heart of Fayetteville NC. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is the largest agricultural research and teaching institution in South Carolina. The university offers a variety of degree programs. The Fayetteville Public Library is one of the biggest public libraries in the area. The library features both traditional and modern lending services.

The City Market is located in the center of Fayetteville NC. The market offers locally grown produce, as well as other foods. The Fayetteville Public Library is located nearby, as is the City Hall.

The Fayetteville NC has a vibrant arts community, with a number of popular theaters, museums, and art galleries. There are also many specialty shops in the area. Some of these shops offer unique gifts and souvenirs, and crafts. There are also numerous local restaurants serving local foods and food items.

The Fayetteville NC is the home of the Fayetteville Regional Airport. The airport serves international flights to Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and more. The airport is easily accessible from several major cities.

The population of Fayetteville NC is only around twenty thousand people, but it is home to many national, state, county, and municipal government agencies. The city is also one of the fastest-growing areas of South Carolina.

The Fayetteville NC has a very active music scene. The town is home to a number of popular venues that cater to music lovers. The music venues include the Riverfront Coliseum, and Fayetteville Music Center.

The City of Fayetteville has one of the largest historic districts. The Fayetteville Historic District houses a number of historic buildings. The City Center Mall houses the City Center Mall, which is one of the busiest malls in the South Carolina region. The Fayetteville Convention Center is the official conference and convention center in the area.

The Fayetteville NC has a number of museums, historical sites, historical markers, historic homes, and gardens. The Fayetteville National Military Park is located here. The historic City Center Mall houses two beautiful historic parks, including the Fayetteville Heritage Village and the Fayetteville History Museum.

The Fayetteville NC is home to a number of outdoor activities. The Blue Ridge Mountain Resort is located here and offers a variety of activities, from fishing to hiking, boating, camping, horseback riding, swimming, and bicycling. The City of Fayetteville is a very popular recreation area for residents, and visitors to this area.

The Fayetteville NC has several parks and recreational areas. The Fayetteville area has an excellent quality of life and is home to a number of upscale real estate and business centers. The community is home to several colleges, universities, and schools, as well.
