I just witnessed an Amazon ant raid for the first time irl, in my upstate New York backyard of all places, it was so freaking cool
#i watched the whole thing start to finish. took maybe 45 mins#absolutely incredible... got some good clips#for those who have no clue what im talking about:#Polyergus ants are parasitic and rely on stealing the brood of Formica ants to feed and care for them#so they launch massive raids where they quickly overwhelm and infiltrate Formica nests and steal all the pupae#i tracked them from one side of the yard to the other and down into the nest and back all the way to their own nest#took a few specimens for my ant scientist friend to get a species ID from
