Game Research
Boneworks Boneworks is a VR game developed by Stress Level Zero and released in 2019. It has gained widespread attention for its innovative approach to VR physics and interactivity. In Boneworks, players navigate through an interactive environment, engaging in realistic gunplay, melee combat, and physics-based interactions. The game's emphasis on lifelike movements, intricate physics, and player agency has set a new standard for immersive VR experiences, making it a significant and influential title in the VR gaming landscape. I'm looking at this game as it's became a cornerstone of the VR community due to it using Stress Level Zero's groundbreaking Marrow Interaction Engine. It inspires me to work towards a goal of the player having a large amount of interactivity within their environment, using VR to it's fullest potential by getting the players to fully get involved and immersed in the world I plan on creating by making the players do physical actions rather than just pressing a button.

Bonelab Bonelab is another VR game developed by Stress Level Zero and released in 2022. It gained more widespread attention due to being released on the standalone Meta Quest platform. It uses an enhanced version of the Marrow Interaction Engine with new Avatar features being able to scale player height, mass, agility, speed, upper and lower body strength, vitality and intelligence based on just the model loaded in. I'm researching Bonelab due to how the scale of the world changes with the size and height of each avatar. As I plan to have the scale of my game be much bigger than a usual human being, researching Bonelab allows me to look at how scale impacts player visibility and gameplay.

I'm researching Moss due to how it plays with the perspective of the player, having them overview as a guardian over Quill. The game makes use of VR by having the player physically manipulate the environment around them to assist Quill, which is a feature I want to bring into my own game to take advantage of VR's capabilities.

I'm researching Lone Echo due to it's innovative and dissimilar controls than traditional VR games, it's zero-gravity movement provides a memorable and engaging experience, much different from any other VR game in the industry.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach - Ruin Released in 2023, Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach - Ruin is a DLC developed by Steel Wool Studios. The narrative unfolds in an abandoned iteration of the Freddy Fazbear Pizzaplex, the setting of the base game. Players assume the role of Cassie, embarking on a quest to locate her friend Gregory, the protagonist from the main game.

While the game was lauded for its innovative approach to the series and providing a compelling 3D experience, it faced criticism upon release for performance issues. Despite these challenges, Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach - Ruin demonstrates a commendable effort to explore new ideas within the franchise.
I'm investigating Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach due to it's use of an alternate AR world. The AR world is dreamlike when the player enters it and I plan to use this idea for my own dreamlike world in my game, as I plan to have a nightmare dimension that the player goes into when asleep.

In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies, the Dark Aether plays a central role in the narrative and gameplay. The Dark Aether is a mysterious and otherworldly dimension that serves as a parallel universe to the main game world. Players delve into this nightmarish realm as they seek to unravel the mysteries surrounding the zombie outbreak.
The Dark Aether in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies is a haunting and foreboding dimension, distinct from the familiar real-world settings of the main game. Its environment is characterized by an eerie and surreal atmosphere, featuring twisted landscapes, ominous structures, and an overall sense of malevolence. The scenery within the Dark Aether is shrouded in perpetual darkness, with a dimly lit purple haze.
The Dark Aether's environment is a large amount of inspiration for me on this project, it's dreamlike and nightmarish visuals provides the perfect scenario for a dream world, which is how I plan to incorporate it into my game.

Among the Sleep Among the Sleep is a first-person horror adventure game developed by Krillbite Studio. The narrative unfolds through the eyes of the toddler as they navigate a darkened house and eerie environments, encountering both real and imagined threats. The game's unique perspective and atmospheric design aim to evoke a sense of vulnerability and fear, providing a distinctive horror experience.
Among the sleep has served as my main inspiration for my game, as the setting of a terrified young child in the middle of a nightmare is what I plan to use for my own game. Among the Sleep's unique aesthetic and gameplay is something I plan to aim for in my own project.

Moss is an adventure puzzle game made my Polyarc where the player plays as a mouse traversing its way through a mystical unknown. The game is third person which I find interesting but sort of janky as a virtual reality game. This is because playing as third person but being able to control where you look is sort of pointless to me in a virtual reality game

Polyarc is rolling out their own Creator Program!
They are currently working on adjusting the creator program eligibility guidelines as many had strong feelings against the requirement of "25% of content is related to Moss, Moss: Book II, Glassbreakers, or a mix of these three titles."

Specialist Practice Research
I've chosen Virtual Reality as my specialist practice, it's a medium of playing games that I have loved for 6 years, I want to use my FMP as a way to break into VR and test out it's waters for myself, as I believe you can create unreal environments to immerse the player as someone else inside of them, especially playing with the sense of scale. These three studios have heavily inspired me with their work, creating some of the most immersive and innovative VR games in the industry, Stress Level Zero: Stress Level Zero is a prominent VR game development studio, recognized for its contributions to the immersive VR landscape. The studio achieved critical acclaim for its groundbreaking title, "Boneworks" which released in 2019. Stress Level Zero is a veteran of the VR industry, starting with their first game "Hover Junkers" releasing on 5 April 2016, in VR's infancy and releasing 3 more games, the latest being 2022's "Bonelab".
