It was my first time entering the PTCGIC contest, and these were fun to work on.
My entries didn’t get chosen, and I’ll likely enter again when this contest resurfaces.

Flygon and Trapinch
The Pokémon Trading Card Game has an annual art contest. Last year, I created two illustrations to enter in the contest (there was a limit of three entries per artist.) There was a short list of Pokémon to choose from, and the theme “Magical Pokémon Moments.” It was also a requirement not to share or post the art made for the contest until results were posted. They recently shared the results of the first round of eliminations, so I’m safe to share my entries now! There were almost 11,000 entries, and they just posted the top 300. I was very disappointed for a while after I saw I didn’t make it. I really need to step up my game and improve my skills. I’ll enter again next year!

My submissions for the Pokémon Trading Card Game Illustration Contest 2024. These didn't make it past the first round of judging. But Feraligatr is one of my favorite Pokémon, so I'm glad I had the chance to draw it.

Here is one (1) of my three (3) entries for the Pokémon Trading Card Game Contest
Man, I spent quite some time looking at some of the entries done by other people and all I could say was "Wow! I want to be like them!"
There is a lot I need to learn about illustration in general as I don't feel as near as incredible as other artists.
Having this in mind since the very beginning, did I really think I could make it to the top 300? Not really ...
Did I have fun? TOTALLY!!
I am not sad nor disappointed because it was obvious back then, even more now that the results are up.
All I can do is make a compromise with myself, I will continue to study, learn, practice, and improve. I'm even more excited for the next contest!!

So excited to find out that the Pokémon TCG Illustration contest is back this year!
And even more exciting is that Feraligatr, one of my all-time favorite pokémon, is one of the eligible monsters to draw this year!
Tumblr media
It would be such a dream come true to design a card illustration that becomes officially published. I remember back as a kid seeing Feraligatr on a card for the first time and being so blown away by its design. Maybe I can make an illustration that invokes that same excitement in another person someday. 🤧
Also, I appreciate that they are once again allowing entrants to use a pseudonym if they don't want to use their real name to apply.
Tumblr media
One other important thing I should add is, please read all the rules carefully.
A big thing with art contests like this is that you can be disqualified for posting your entry on social media before the finalists are announced. Inevitably there are always a handful of folks who are excited to share their work right away, but it's at the risk of losing your entry! There are other guidelines to be aware of too, so just be careful to read everything first. Make sure you're comfortable with the rules and terms before submitting to the contest.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the submission deadline isn't until January next year, so that's plenty of time to come up with something amazing! I can't wait to draw something and see everyone else's drawings when the time comes.
Good luck, everyone!

Pokémon TCG Illustration Contest's Winning Card Art Features Adorable Pikachu With Unlikely Inspiration
The Pokémon Company has officially announced the winners of the 2024 Pokémon Trading Card Game Illustration Contest, a global competition that offers artists the chance to see their work printed on a real Pokémon trading card. Running from October 2023 to January 2024, this year's contest revolved around the theme, "Magical Pokémon Moments." https://youtu.be/9R1cxqpy_xg As revealed on the official Pokémon Illustration Contest website, the grand prize winner for 2024 is Kazuki Minami, a Japanese artist whose heartwarming portrait of Pikachu scratching his ear stole the show. Kazuki’s inspiration? Their pet dog! The adorable depiction of Pikachu has earned Kazuki a $5,000 USD cash prize and the honour of having their artwork featured as an official Pokémon TCG Promo card. In a statement, Kazuki reflected on how their dog inspired the artwork: "As this was my first time taking part in this contest, I wasn't sure what to draw and how to draw it. That's when my dog came into my sight being cute—I was inspired to draw Pikachu in such a way that reminds me of my dog. So the prize belongs to my dog as much as it does to me, and we're both extremely happy and honoured." Kazuki’s charming and intimate Pikachu artwork was chosen from 10,829 entries from across the globe. The judges praised the piece for its authenticity, capturing a carefree moment in beautiful detail: "This illustration beautifully captures Pikachu in a tender moment during warm morning light. It’s challenging to make simple scenes like a yawn engaging, but the artist has succeeded in creating a relatable and evocative setting. Placing Pikachu at the centre of the frame emphasises the charm of the moment, while the subtle stylisation adds originality without straying from authenticity."
Tumblr media
Thousands of artworks were submitted for the contest, with entries from Trainers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. The top entries progressed through rounds of judging, with the Top 300 and Top 100 finisher announcements building excitement along the way. Today, the winners are finally revealed, with Kazuki Minami taking the top spot. Beyond the grand prize, winners of the contest will also see their artwork made into Pokémon TCG promo cards, including the Best Standard Card Illustration and Best Pokémon ex Card Illustration. The release dates for these special promo cards will be announced at a later date. For the full list of winning artists and their entries, visit the official Pokémon TCG Illustration Contest 2024 website. Congratulations to all the talented artists, and thank you to everyone who shared their love for Pokémon through their incredible artwork! Read the full article

Picking a competition brief
Initially I thought that the brief was limited to animation however it appears that illustration is also allowed. I originally wanted to select the below pokemon trading card game illustration contest.
However, after discussing this with my lecturers, it appears there isn't enough content in the brief to justify working on it for the whole semester. So instead I decided on the following brief.
The 1 pound challenge asks that we attempt to pack as much game as possible into a physical box that weighs 16 ounces or less. This brief seemed intriguing as I have long been a fan of games like the Pokemon Trading Card game and Bakugan, as well as being an avid board game player (seriously we have boxes everywhere, its a problem). I look forward to trying to take traditional ideas and concepts and stretching them well past their limits

I'd be stoked to participate in the Pokémon Trading Card Game Illustration Contest this year, but I'm not eligible to participate...
(small rambling under the cut)
Surely the reasons for it are mostly of legal nature in the respective countries, yet it still feels like a lot of talent in the world are cast off into non-recognization because of it. But there's no reason to sit and lament on opportunities not obtainable, just work on the things you enjoy and try to create your own opportunities!
Sad soapbox's over, back on making art again 😁
