Gianing or losing? - Let's talk about Aeroplan
Living in a market-oriented world, we have all kinds of shopping experience. Along with our money spending, we also get discounts or free stuff if we have the customer loyalty card at the store. We have been told that after collecting certain amount of points we will get discounts or gifts, but the cost is that we have to give them our personal information, from email address, phone number to home address. What are we really signing up for when we sign up for customer loyalty cards?
As we all know, stores collect customer’s information then put them in their not-perfectly-secured database. They group their customers and send them divided advertisement that they will most likely fall into. Companies and factories do market research on the data so they can decide what to produce and how much to produce. This is not the bad part, because at least we are pushing the economy forward. The Bad part is that everybody can access the database if they try hard, our information is exposed in public and anyone can take it for their own purposes.
I just received an email from Aeroplan, the rewards card from Air Canada. They informed me a very “exciting” update on their privacy policy. At the beginning, they mentioned, “Aeroplan and its trusted partners have always shared information with each other”, which means, “I’m not the only one watching you, there are a lot of people who can access and use your information too!” Then they expressed that “we will begin to receive an account of cardholder transactions such as the merchant’s name, transaction amount and date” and they say that is because “this will allow us to create and send more relevant offers to you”, which means, “now we know everything you have done with this card, we know when, where, how much did you spend and what did you spend on. Now your wife, your employers, and the government can track you down more easily! PS: more junk ads for you!” Then they left my home address at the bottom, which could be seen by anyone who can log onto my computer or hack into my email account.
This customer surveillance system offends our privacy so much but we just pretend we don’t see it because we all want free gifts. Hackers can easily break into the database and steal all our information; fake IDs or credit cards will be created with our names or addresses on them. The police can easily get data from these database and they can investigate whatever they want from us. The government knows every little secret we are hiding by looking at these data so they can find a more effective way to control us. The sociologist and economist publish their research papers and findings based on our data. Through the rewards card, our daily life and personal preference is exposed in public. Thanks to those customer loyalty cards, our surveillance net became more and more powerful and unstoppable every day.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. It seems like they are giving us benefits but in fact, they are taking away a lot more than they are giving us.
