"Another little plant I still like is Poa Annua. It’s a little plant that only lives for one year and grows between the stones of the road, a modest little plant, but it’s always there and it grows in the space where no other plant will grow. Even in cities. That’s what I like about it." - herman de vries

"The most accomplished of all herbicide survivors is a little Poa annua found on a golf course, which resisted seven families of herbicide."
Nature abhors monoculture.
I've started to actually get excited for school starting, I spend a lot of time online reading scientific papers about my favorite weeds, and I think I want to study weeds forever.
Apparently it's an ongoing mystery why dandelions in North America are so diverse, when all dandelions that have been found so far are apomicts that reproduce only by cloning themselves.
However, any given site will have many distinct dandelion genotypes, with many different traits.
For example, a site might have one dandelion strain that blooms primarily in fall, and another that blooms primarily in spring.
One theory is that there's new genetic information constantly coming in from Eurasia somehow. Apparently dandelion seeds can spread on the wind 150 KILOMETERS! Perhaps some are just blown across the ocean in a storm? But if that's the case, why weren't dandelions found all over North America already when European settlers came?
The other theories are that there are sexually reproducing dandelions here that we just haven't found yet, and that they somehow make new diversity very rapidly purely through mutations and recombination and such.

Weeds are a pest to gardens and lawns; they compete with the primary plant for space, light, water, and nutrients. The action of weeds affects the overall performance and yield of the garden or lawn field. Which grass varieties are best for putting greens
Tumblr media
When it comes to putting greens, not all grass varieties are created equal. Golf enthusiasts and professionals know that the right grass can make or break a game. In this article, we'll explore the best grass varieties for putting greens and how to care for them to maintain their lush, green appearance. - Bentgrass: Bentgrass is a popular choice for putting greens due to its fine texture and excellent ball roll. It can thrive in full sun or partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. - Bermuda Grass: Bermuda grass is a warm-season grass that is known for its ability to withstand heavy foot traffic and high temperatures. It requires plenty of sunlight and prefers well-drained soil. - Zoysia Grass: Zoysia grass is a warm-season grass that can tolerate partial shade and has a high drought tolerance. It can also withstand heavy foot traffic and recovers quickly from damage. - Poa Annua: Poa Annua is a cool-season grass that is commonly found on golf courses due to its excellent ball roll and disease resistance. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and can tolerate partial shade. - Ryegrass: Ryegrass is a cool-season grass that is often used to overseed warm-season grasses during the winter months. It has a fine texture and can provide a fast, uniform playing surface.
Tumblr media
Now that we've explored the best grass varieties for putting greens, let's look at how to care for them. - Mowing: It's essential to keep your putting green's grass at a short length to maintain a smooth, uniform playing surface. Bentgrass, for example, should be mowed at a height of 1/8 to 3/16 inches. - Watering: Consistent watering is crucial for maintaining healthy grass. Water your putting green deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth. It's best to water early in the morning to avoid evaporation and disease. - Fertilizing: Regular fertilization is essential for keeping your grass healthy and green. It's best to apply fertilizer in the spring and fall when the grass is actively growing. - Aeration: Aeration is the process of creating small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the root zone. It's essential for maintaining healthy grass and should be done once or twice a year, depending on the grass variety and usage. By following these tips, you can keep your putting green's grass healthy and vibrant, providing an excellent playing surface for years to come. Remember to choose the right grass variety for your needs and care for it properly to ensure the best possible playing surface. Read the full article

Welcome to Pebble Beach Golf Links
Our national championship begins tomorrow at the beautiful meeting of land and sea known as Pebble Beach. This setting is the most recognizable in American golf. A landscape painted with blue waves, rocky cliffs, and the Carmel beaches is simply breathtaking.
The British Open has long been known for its “rota” - a series of courses that regularly host the championship. If you’ve been paying attention, the USGA has molded its own rota over the past 35-40 years. These special courses have been US Open sites every 8-10 years: Oakmont; Shinnecock Hills; Winged Foot; Pinehurst; and the Olympic Club. Pebble Beach is entrenched in this list.
Other than the scenery, Pebble is known for its small, poa annua putting greens. This week it will also feature long, thick rough. The ryegrass in the second cut and around the greens appears to be 3-4 inches tall. As usual for a US Open, there will be a premium on hitting fairways and greens. After enduring some criticism in the past few years regarding course conditions, this year the USGA has changed its set up procedures. We’ve called in a Feng Shui expert hoping to get it right.

Golf ball sitting down in bermuda rough
Tumblr media
#Golf ball sitting down in bermuda rough Offline#
#Golf ball sitting down in bermuda rough Offline#
When it comes to putting, the faster you can get the ball rolling the better, balls that jump off the face and hop and skip on the greens can often be bumped offline on this type of grass. Pebble Beach is built on Poa annua, and this is an often complaint of players. So this means that if you play in the afternoon, you can be dealing with much bumpier greens than people who played in the morning. Poa annua grass has one specific quality that a lot of people hate – different strains of the grass can grow at different rates. More times than not, this grass doesn’t put up much resistance to golf clubs, and can leave golfers with decent rough lies with the ball sitting up on occasion. Poa Annua rough is slightly less tangly than bentgrass, and often requires less force to help the ball get out. You can pick it out because of its lighter green color, and the fact that it grows in small patches amongst other grasses. From there it can take root, and begin to grow. It usually finds its way onto golf courses all over the planet by hitching a ride from one course to another on a golfers shoes. This grass is considered by many greenskeepers as an invasive species. Ideally you want the ball to be rolling ASAP on the greens, but this is not as important on this type of grass, it is incredibly smooth, and even putting strokes that cause the ball to hop and skip won’t hurt you too much in the end. Also a broader variety of strokes can be used on the greens with this type of grass. Furthermore, this grass makes some of the best greens on the planet, and is notorious for being able to hold the line of your putts no matter what type of stroke you put on it. These fairways are easy and straightforward to hit off of.īentgrass greens are some of the most common on the planet, due to their thick root structure and ability to withstand a ton of foot traffic. If the grass if growing in the direction of your target, you will often get flyer lies, if it lies against you, expect it to slow your club down quickly upon impact.īentgrass fairways are usually softer, and often are mowed quite tightly as the grasses grow straight up. One thing you need to be aware of is watching where this grass is growing in relation to your target. This grass also has a tendency not to roll out as much as other grasses, due to its stronger structure.īentgrass rough is pretty tame, the ball can often sit up and doesn’t give you much of a problem to get out of it. If the grass looks shiny and light green, it is likely growing away from you, and the ball will roll more. If the grass appears a dull, dark green, the grain is likely growing toward you, and will slow your putts. The ball will also tend to follow the grain, so knowing how the grain lies is important on this type of grass. This grass is pretty grainy and will tend to follow the sun throughout the day. When you’re playing on Bermuda greens, there’s a couple things you should know. Chunking shots on this type of grass is especially common, so hit the ball below the ground. Because this grass grows in more of a gnarly tangle than straight up, lies from the fairway can be a little sticky. Ball first contact is a must, and these fairways have been described as “spongier”. Moral of this story – keep it in the fairway.įrom the fairway, you will notice that more often than not you’ll be hitting from tighter lies, and because of this the ball tends to fly further when struck. This grass is often found in the southern United States due to its sensitivity to cold. Tightening up your grip a bit when you’re in the deep stuff can also help. Consider using a club with more loft and make sure you’re attacking the ball with a descending blow. Furthermore, the ball isn’t well supported, so it usually sits down in the rough and needs to be dug out from its nested lie. So hitting from the rough can be especially difficult, as this grass tends to grab and twist your club, and robs you of speed, and thus distance. The structure of this grass is thicker per weight than most other grasses played on golf courses. Enjoy :īermuda can be a real ***, especially when you get into the rough. But I found this quick article by a "sir shanks a lot" that was insightful and well written. Made me think about green lush grass, and what kind mine is in the backyard, and how why other types are mentioned and how and why they react different for a golfer (which leads me to the ultimate thought that a golf addict will do anything to feel a connection to golf even if they cannot play it). I look outside to an ice frosted backyard with rock solid dirt underneath and sigh as I cannot chip a few balls in my back yard to practice here in New England.

Annual Meadow Grass - Poa Annua
Each spikelet is made up of three to ten flowers, each of which is enclosed between two green bracts. The stamens are long, and the anthers hang outside the flower, allowing the powdery pollen to blow away on the wind.
