James is used to the walk by now. Every Tuesday when his academic day is finished, he traipses around the University's man-made lake and sculpture garden as he makes his way to student housing. James tries not to seethe with discontent and forces himself to focus on the task at hand. He's being helpful. He's being a good big brother. He is not angry at Tasha for neglecting to submit a mail forwarding request.

James doesn't need to know the apartment number; the pile of damp-looking envelopes and sales ads on the doormat make his destination visible all the way down the block. He wonders for a moment what Tasha's would-be neighbors might think. She's slobbish and self-centered to the point of true oblivion? If James is honest, the description isn't far off. He just happens to love the little turd and can't help his instinct of automatic forgiveness, hence his dedication to clean up the studio and continue the charade that it's inhabited. Tasha's much safer living in James's spare room, but he hates to think of the consequences that will come if a protective service worker comes knocking at Tasha's technical address.

Shaking his head, James scoops up the paper and newsprint. It's mostly grocery store coupons and political flyers destined for the recycling bin. When Tasha eats, it's Steve's home cooking, and in the political realm, her opinion is already clear. She probably doesn't know half the candidates on the ballot, but James has heard her say that she'd rather vote for "the girl" instead of "the troll."

Tucking the junk mail under his prosthetic arm, James fumbles the apartment's key out of his pocket and into the lock. When it doesn't make the telltale click, his brow furrows. Anxiety prickles down his spine. James is sure he locked up after last week's tending. He trusts his paranoia more than his memory. He tries to think of legitimate reasons for the door to be open. Maybe maintenance? Someone to fix the plumbing? But James can't hold onto it as an option. It must be someone unwelcome. An intruder. An ax murderer. A terrorist planting a bomb.

As James tentatively turns the knob and eases the door open, it finally processes that the apartment's just unlocked. There are no signs of a forced entry. The lock doesn't even look picked, but it’s still far from reassuring.

James automatically jumps to worst-case scenario. The break-in must be premeditated. He thinks of careful surveillance and copied keys. Tasha might not notice a stalker. She's vulnerable. And now in desperate need of protection from what could be a serial killer. James just hopes he can head the guy off before he realized where Tasha actually lives.

The door momentarily sticks; the pile of unopened mail that’s made it through the slot over the last week makes crumpling and shredding sounds as James forces it open. So much for stealth. But this situation calls for a soldier, not a sniper. James squares his shoulders, shoves the door inward as far as it can go, and calls out in a clear, if not threatening, tone.

“Sergeant James Barnes, U.S. Army. If anyone’s in here, make yourself known.”

James’s nose is hit with the scent of smoke. Maybe a tinge of something chemical? He wills it not to be a bomb.

A throaty cough comes from deep within the apartment’s interior, along with a soft, “The fuck?”

Is it Tasha? James’s head is filled with white noise, and his hearing aids only increase the volume of the tinnitus. Whomever it is sounds impaired. Bound and gagged?

“Step out where I can see you. Hold your hands above your head.” James goes for his thigh holster, but of course it’s not there. He settles for holding his keys out like a many-bladed knife. The pieces of mail spill from under James’s arm as he brings his prosthetic hand under the other for support.

“Jamie?” A swath of frizzy red curls appears over the arm of the sofa. “Ugh.” Tasha’s pale face comes into view, her pointed chin dug into the upholstery.

James wants to sag with relief. He recognizes the thick smoky odor as cannabis, accompanied by the bitterness of bodily fluids. He can’t lose his nerve yet, though. Tasha still might not be alone.

“Anyone else?” James easily maintains his authoritative tone. “Clear the building.”

“Jamie, seriously, what the fuck?” Tasha’s eyes crinkle around the edges as she squints at him.

“Are you here of your own free will?”

“Yeah…?” Tasha raises an eyebrow. “Shut the door. You’re making it all bright.” She speaks the last sentence with a very familiar whine. As far as proof of identity goes, that’s definitely the ticket.

“Are you here of your own free will? Nobody is forcing you to be here?”

“Uh…no.” Tasha blinks slowly. “Shut the damn door, will you?” Her voice cracks, and Tasha’s head disappears, and she retches painfully.

James dutifully closes the door. A catalogue and a few credit card offers catch at the door jamb and tumble back out to the front stoop, and James suddenly remembers his original mission of sorting and recycling. He’ll get back to it. Tasha’s wellbeing is the priority, and from what he's seen so far, he has a feeling she's south of the mark.

James isn’t comfortable putting his keys away yet, but he folds them int a less threatening fist, which he grips so tightly the metallic points and ridges indent themselves into the pads of his fingers. He takes a breath to steady himself. Threat avoided, James thinks. Mission complete. He can drop his militaristic pretence for recon and rescue. Tasha does better with a more sensitive touch. If only he could be sure his body will behave.

The essence of marijuana becomes stronger as James steps into the apartment's tiny living area. His eyes burn and his head starts to buzz as if he's taking a joint himself. "Hey," he says quietly, stepping out of parade rest and into a more casual stance.

Tasha's bent double; she sits on the couch with her feet on the floor her torso draped down between her knees. She spits into a small bathroom trash bin, then raises bloodshot eyes to meet James's.

"Not feeling that great?" James asks. He kneels and steadies the bin for her.

"Nah." Tasha shakes her head, then squeezes her eyes closed and snuffles. She seems to notice James's vice-like grip on his keys as she uses the sleeve of her t-shirt to wipe her nose. "You, like, gonna stab me or something?" she asks hoarsely. "I'm not doing anything illegal."

James chooses his words carefully. "I was making sure no one was doing something illegal to you."

"By calling a bomb threat?" Tasha slumps back into the couch cushions. "I was tripping really good. Did you want me to start hallucinating desert rats or something? I hate it when the other side is all creepy."

Tasha's not one to respect anything, but James wishes she could see the situation from his side. Well, actually he doesn't; the 19-year-old has enough to deal with without wartime flashbacks to boot. James swallows his annoyance. This time is for helping Tasha after all. Postal pickup, sober friend. Same difference.

"Let me guess." James takes the slightest peek into the bin. "Robatussin and..." He pauses to think. The red fluid is easy enough to read. The green, though... "Bile from the deepest depths?" He greatly doubts Tasha would have blenderized spinach in her system.

"Bingo." Tasha slowly brings her arm around her head and leans toward her horizontal position again. "But your timing sucks. I have at least another hour before the pretty pictures go away, and you will not subject me to a moving vehicle in the meantime."

Seeing as Steve's currently at swim practice, the only available mode of transport is the city bus. James decides not to drop the news.

"You can stay put," he concedes, but he sits back on his knees and straightens his spine. "But we have to talk."

"I promise I'll never, ever do it again." Tasha doesn't bother to open her eyes.

"Hey, you're supposed to listen first."

Tasha puts a hand over her upward-facing ear.

"Stop." James folds Tasha's arm back down to her side, then gently prode her with a thumb between her eyebrows. "Seriously."

"Ok, what." Tasha gives him a glare, but her eyes gloss over almost immediately.

"This place reeks of weed," James states.

"It's a fucking college dorm." Tasha's whine is back. "It was like that before I moved in. Or, well, you know."

James doubts it, but again, he lets Tasha's words fly, leaving no meaning behind. "How often are you coming in here to smoke?"

"I don't know. Once? I guess?" Tasha's voice is thin and watery.

James nudges the bin a bit closer to Tasha's leg. She dry retches a few times, then brings up a trickle of pink-tinged spit once she's well over the trash can.

"I don't believe you," James says in all seriousness. "Are you going to your classes? You're going to flunk out if all you do is hole up and get high." He can't stop himself from going on. "Or is this where you go on Friday nights in your tube tops and high heels? Is there alcohol in here? Do you, like, have people over?"

"God, Jamie." Tasha wraps her arms around her stomach and gulps.

Guilt begins to sicken James's own gut. Is he being too direct? It's always a careful balance to strike; too lax, and she'll ignore him. Too harsh and she'll spite him. James wishes he still had the ability to hear his own tone.

Tasha looks like she's about to cry, but she doesn't. She just vomits again, then cringes. "Cherry," she mumbles. "What is a fucking cherry? Do these people actually eat fruit?" She shoots an accusatory look at a the smashed boxt halfway under the sofa. James recognizes it as the packaging from the Robatussin.

"Tash." James won't stop until he gets some actual answers. "Tell me you're not hosting intoxicated orgies in here."

Tasha takes a long time to spit and wipe her lips on the back of her hand. "If I did that, there'd be no carpet."

It's a valid point. The low-pile beige running wall-to-wall is as clean as its last shampooing. James considers. Tilts his head to the side. "Ok. I'll give you that."

"Gee, thanks."

"But are you cutting class? How often--?"

"You're being kind of an idiot," Tasha says with remarkable patience. "How many days in a row can you hit up without becoming a permanent benzo zombie?"

James struggles to hold the upper hand. They have an unspoken agreement not to talk about James's usage. He's a grown ass adult with his own legal prescription. The fact that Tasha's a grown ass adult as well with her own ID to buy over-the-counter hallucinogens isn't supposed to be in the same league.

James sighs. "Yeah. Fine. I get it."

"Do you now?" Tasha murmurs. She's heading toward unconsciousness again. "If you need somewhere to, you know, convalesce. The door's open."

"Hmm." James finds his keys and rattles them close to Tasha's face. "About that. I expected this place to be empty, but then the door was unlocked."

"So you went into ninja mode?" Tasha laughs, as if James's militaristic behavior was just a party trick.

"That's not actually funny." James's expression goes hard. "I can't stop once that switch turns in my brain. You know that."

"If you've got oxy on you, there's plenty of room." Tasha waves vaguely at the opposite end of the couch."

"You are not making this place into a drug den. It's, what, 400 square feet? There isn't even a den in this apartment." James laughs as well, but it's cold and incredulous.

"Well, I'm going back to lights and colors," Tasha says decidedly. She looks to the bin, then seems to decide she's done evacuating stomach contents. She flops back to lie on her side and lets her eyelids slide shut.

James gives it one last try. "I'd rather you do this at home. It's all legal; I really don't care. Just, safety, you know?"

"Sure." Tasha lets out a deep, peaceful breath. "Or you could just stay here."

There's no hope in moving her now, and James's inner vigilante hasn't completely gone back into hibernation. "I'll stay," he acquiesces. "But just for today." He turns back to the entryway.

"But-" Tasha points again to the couch. "Where are you going?"

James stoops and gathers the mess of mail into two great handfuls. "Entertainment," he says simply, then taps a few envelopes on the top of Tasha's head.

James sits on the couch, crosses one leg over the other, and begins to sort. He peruses the Walgreens mailing, but puts it directly into the discard pile as soon as he sees the perforated coupons offering half-price cold and flu medications.

My Princess Peach headcanon's

Peach is a bit of an artist, and loves to paint, I like to think she makes the paintings in her castle. So sometimes she’ll grab Toad or one of the Mario brothers to be the subject of her paintings, Toad has been doing this for years, so has grown quite fond of it (he once asked her to paint him very muscular as a joke, now that painting lives above his fireplace at home, it’s his pride and joy, of course next too the very first painting she made of him when they where just kids).

Mario finds it flattering but can’t sit still doing nothing for too long, it drives him mad, so he often takes a few reference photos and sends them to Peach.

Luigi is all for it, he likes to dress in different outfits for it, it makes them feel better about themselves, Peach proudly shows off one of them in her throne room, it’s Luigi with a beautiful Blue Sun dress on, in the middle of a field, sat amongst the grass and flowers.

She loves to bake with Luigi, they teach each over new recipes, decorate cakes for her parties together. Luigi is basically her unofficial food taster at this point, he’s personally cooked for her a few times now, and Peach insists on hiring him as her personal chef, She’s jealous he and Mario get to eat like this every day.

Luigi and her are close, he is learning all the responsibilities she takes on, so that he could take on the role of an ambassador of sorts, he wants to help her out since she always overworks herself, and could use the extra help, plus he could keep the kingdom running smoothly when she’s kidnapped again.

They also read books together, preferably action or romance, so if something happens to one of their favourite characters, they call each over, going:“they just killed (character)”, “they did not!”, “girl I’m not lying, turn to page 312, swear to glob” .

Mario is a massive sweetheart, so if she’s sick he’ll run over to her castle with soup in one hand and Luigi in the other (by the ankle) Luigi finishes off the rest of her work, while Mario tends to the Princess, putting on her favourite movies, while tying her hair back to keep it out of her face.

Although she hates being sick, she loves how attentive Mario gets, and takes full opportunity to snuggle up to him on her bed wrapped in many, many blankets.

She tends to not let her anger get the better of her on the rare occasion someone manages to push all of her buttons. So she has a private gym to punch out her emotions, and scream, it’s so she can be as loud and as violent as she wants. Lost a few good punching bags that way. It's also less hastle then activating the obstacle course all over again.

She was trained from a young age, and although she may look small and dainty to the untrained person, or one that doesn't know her well. But she is very capable of protecting herself, she knows how to pick locks, untie ropes, pleanty of survival training and first aid.

She knits and crochets in her spare time, making jumpers and blankets for the homeless or people in need, she of course has programs set up to help out her people, and they are very successful, but she also knows donations are important, especially after hearing the Mario brothers experience being in those programs and eventually being in the system as well.

Mario and Luigi help out, Mario loves carpentry so will make toys and puzzles for the kids, Luigi makes stuffed toys and regular day clothes, they both make large amounts of food to donate, and discount their plumbing services for the people in the programs (yes they set their plumbing business back up).

Luigi also volunteers to teach the kids on some days, Mario occasionally joining him when he has the time. Peach funds all of it, making sure they have the right materials, and food, and will always insist on taking food home.

When Bowser is more casual with Peach he’s actually alright, he never try’s to harm her anyways, when he’s really busy she takes on babysitting the kids, as she does enjoy her time with them, but prefers that they just call her Peach, she enjoys having them around, playing video games with them, listening to Ludwig’s music, letting Wendy do her makeup, drawing with Jr, playing with Lemmy. They all have a special place in her heart.

Princess Peach can speak many languages, she was thought it would be much more convenient if she learnt the languages herself instead of having a translated when talking with other kingdoms that did not use English, or even words sometimes.

Peaches Dad, King Toadstool, is still around, but is very ill so he can’t do much for his kingdom anymore, as even getting out of his bed is a very strenuous process for him. This is why Peach is still a Princess and not a Queen, in title anyways, but she has taken on the role of Queen.

Peach loves her father dearly so she had computer monitors installed on his wall, so he can still watch over his people in one way, and watch her and her friends have fun. The cameras are in the more populated areas, such as the stadium, in toad towns market street, and the throne room, but only looks at that if he has the express permission of his daughter, as she has meetings in their and he does not want to intrude.

Often enough when Peach is kidnapped or missing and it was one of the more covert missions, he is the first too notice and report it to the Bros. He loves the Mario brothers, for not only helping out and saving his kingdom multiple times, but also being their for his daughter in her time of need, he has given Mario his blessing to Marry Peach, as he has seen their interactions together and knows all too well that they pine for each over.

Peach will visit his room every day at lunch time and eat with him, sometimes she brings the others, most of the time she’s on her own, Toadworth also visits him a lot which brings her comfort, knowing that his best friend is still around to talk to him.

( MTF Peach headcanon) Peaches mother died in childbirth, which devastated the King and the Kingdom so she was a lovely woman and an even better Queen.

This however did not stop the King from raising his child to the best of his abilities, along with his best friend, and co-parent, Toadsworth, so when they learned that the little Prince, wanted instead to be a little Princess, they did all they could for her, they had their best mages research ways to help her out with her transition, which was mostly made up with permanent spells.

Still he was glad that his daughter was happy, but know even more worried to the fact that he didn’t know where to begin in teaching her how to do stuff girls do, so he scheduled play dates with Princess Daisy, and even had Queen Bean help out, and Toadworth took on teaching her the more well, royal boring side of it.

And how did Peach come up with her name? Actually her father did, she still wanted her father to name her, so he went with Peach, it described her perfectly, fair, delicate, sweet, pink, and her mother favourite fruit.

He looks at the woman that Peach has become and can’t help but cry a little, she is almost the spitting image of her mother, sweet and caring, a long with his determined attitude, he couldn’t be more proud of the wonderful young Lady his previous Peach has become, and believes no doubt, that her mother is watching over her, and is no less proud than he is.

One year ago…

Julia was always careful about who she told her origins to. Many people, especially this close to the war ending, still held a lot of hate for Garleans and she was tired of ending up in their sights. So, she did her best to blend in with everyone else, trying to forget old habits drilled into her via ten years of dutiful service. She no longer kept her hair neat and tidy, favoring a lazy ponytail with her bangs swept away from her eyes.

Bathing every day was also another luxury she had to give up, given how most establishments outside the major cities didn’t have plumbing. Julia felt lucky to bathe once a week, never mind twice. Then there was the matter of her clothing. Gone were the days where she could wear her uniform around town without worrying about someone throwing rotten food at her or worse, beating her senseless.

But, despite her efforts, Julia still couldn’t stop other people from talking. She remembered telling one of her fellow servers she was Garlean, but didn’t say she had been a military woman. Next thing she knew the entire tavern and its regulars all knew of her origins. She just walked into work one day and was assaulted with questions regarding the fall of the empire and what her job was back home. Several people shot her glares when she passed, her face dark red and angry.

“How could you?!” Julia had written down on her server’s notepad, shoving it in the face of her so-called friend. “You told everyone!”

“What?” Bridget had exclaimed, her Miqo’te ears twitching. “How was I supposed to know that the customer was gonna open his mouth…”

“Ugh,” Julia actually said, frustrated with her friends sheer stupidity.

“It’s okay! See, no one hates you,” Bridget told her, motioning at the tavern full of grumpy looking individuals. “Seeeeeeee? No one wants to kill you!”

“That wasn’t your secret to spill,” Julia wrote on her notepad. She tore the paper off and roughly shoved it towards Bridget’s chest with a big frown before storming off.

Julia could feel their stares boring into the back of her as she made her way into the kitchen. She withered in the gazes of the cooks, both of them glaring at her. They didn’t need to say anything for her to understand that their dynamic suddenly shifted overnight. No longer could she call these people her friends. They were just more people out to get her, like everyone else here in Eorzea. At this point she felt it would be easier to ignore everyone and live alone as a hermit.

When she finally emerged from the kitchen, tray of food in one hand, the tavern had gotten a touch busier. A few new faces had been seated at the empty tables, now all of them were full with people chatting away. Several people stopped talking and watched Julia as she passed their tables, shooting her daggers from across the table. She offered a tired smile to a table full of men, all of them glaring at her like she had killed their dog and peed on its remains in front of them.

“We’re good, we’ll wait for the other lady to come by,” the biggest of the group said before turning away from Julia and outright ignoring her.

With a frown, Julia set down their food and drinks, ignoring the big man’s request. She wasn’t going to walk their food back to the kitchen just because one of them woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Upon seeing her do this, the big man snarled, gripped the plate and flung it back up at her, right in Julia’s face. She let out a surprised yelp as hot soup was spilled all over her favorite work shirt, staining it in red tomato juice. The sandwich the man had ordered slowly ran down her chest before hitting the floor with a wet slap.

Julia could feel the anger building up inside of her, her day having gone for bad to worse in just five minutes of walking through the doors. She desperately wanted to quit her job here and there and put these thugs in their place, like she used to do back home. No one messed with Julia back home because they all knew they’d get the beating of a lifetime for treating her so poorly. Everyone has their breaking point, and Julia was close to reaching hers.

Before she could act on her growing rage, a big hand slapped her back and roughly shoved her towards the front door. The big man had gotten up from his chair and was now pushing Julia outside. The man’s four friends got up from their seats and followed after like the loyal lapdogs they were. Julia was shoved down the small flight of stairs, causing her to trip over her own feet and sprawled out into the dirt, further ruining her shirt.

“Hah! Look at how the Garlean falls, even more pathetic than I thought,” the big man roared with laughter, doubled over and slapping his knee as if he were the funniest man on the star.

“Yeah, look at her face, it’s so red!” another man joined in the bullying. He leaned forward and poured out his ale on Julia’s head with a smile on his face. “Ahahaha, look at her, she’s so angry.”

The group of men all laughed at the fallen woman as they stood over her, taking turns pouring out their ales. By the time they were finished Julia was soaked to the core in stale ale and bad tomato soup. She stayed where she was, not wanting anyone to start kicking her the moment she moved. So, like a good little girl Julia remained in the dirt, biding her time. Soon, they would turn away, bored of their harassment and eventually saunter back inside.

And as if on queue, the group of five men, laughing still, turn around and started heading inside the tavern once more. Julia rolled over onto her back and stuffed her hand down the front of her pants and drew the small pistol she had secreted away there. The barrel was aimed at the nearest man’s leg and once she had the shot, she took it.

BANG!

“AGH FUCK!” the man cried out as the bullet took him in the knee. His kneecap exploded outward, forever ruined and he fall over sideways screaming.

Someone inside the tavern started screaming, probably Bridget. The group of men came to a dead stop and the biggest of the group slowly turned around and stared down and Julia. He bent down to help his friend up, and upon seeing the state his knee was in, turned to look down at Julia once more.

Before she could move away, the man lashed out with a foot and kicked away her pistol, sending it flying well out of reach. He then jumped down the four stairs and dropped down to a squat and just stared wailing on Julia. His massive fist slammed into her head, knocking it back and hitting her hard enough the world started to spin. She groaned as the man grabbed her by the collar of her shirt and repeated punched her in the face.

Feeling as if she had her fill, the man roughly released Julia and let her hit the ground. He stared down at her still form, snorted loudly and spat a wad of phlegm onto the back of Julia’s head. She continued to groan as the group of people walked back inside, taking their wounded friend inside. One of them peeled off from the group and went to go fetch not just a healer, but the first guard he could find. Shooting someone in the knee was no laughing matter, even if they were the ones who stared the fight.

Back on the ground Julia slowly peeled herself out of the mud and sat up. Her head felt as if someone had taken a metal pot and hit her with it. She reached up and touched a goose egg on the side of her head, frowning at the size of the lump. Julia sat there with two options in front of her, either she could walk away and be the bigger man or she could go back in there and show those cunts who’s boss.

She chose the latter.

“You should’ve seen the look on her face when I kicked the gun out of her hand,” the big man roared with laughter, slapping his knee as if he were the funniest man on the planet once more. “I swear, if all Garleans were that big of a pushover we wouldn’t have had some big fuckin’ war. Should’ve just told the soldiers to push them over and pour beer on ‘em. Seemed to do the trick for her!”

“OI!” Julia shouted as loud as she could manage as she kicked the door open. “You and me, let’s go, bitch!”

Julia charged forward and shoved aside one of the big man’s friends and hopped up onto the big man’s back. She stole his fork out of his hand, grabbed a fistful of hair and pulled his head back. Glaring into his big, dumb brown eyes Julia smirked as she took the fork and jammed it right into one of his eyes.

The big man screamed in pain as the fork was ripped back out, blood pouring from the wound. He tried to shake Julia off but she had a death grip on him and was too busy taking the fork and stabbing his neck repeatedly. Eventually she were draw blood, and lots of it before sliding off the man’s back and roughly pushing his body forward. His head hit the table so hard it practically bounced off, blood from is neck squirting out onto the table and ruining the new sandwich Bridget had brought him Why was that idiot still serving these other idiots? Oh, right. They’re all big, dumb idiots.

The big man’s three remaining friends got up from their chairs and charged at Julia. She slapped aside one punch and delivered one of her own right to a man’s chin. He crumpled to the ground like a sack of potatoes, a wet spot forming over his groin. The final two men went down just as easy as their friend did, joining him on the floor.

Julia stared out at the rest of the tavern’s patrons, covered in blood and beer. She slowly turned her head to glare at Bridget as she started to walk towards the girl. An old man with a big beard got up and tried to get in her way, but Julia was younger and much stronger. She shoved aside the old man with ease and continued her advance.

When she was close enough, Julia lashed out and slapped Bridget as hard as she could. She then took some of the big man’s blood and wiped it onto her hand and in turn wiped that onto Bridget’s hands. The Miqo’te wilted at the message, not needing words to understand what was just said to her. Julia had told her in no other way than she could that the blood of the now dead man was on the girl’s shoulders. Her loud mouth led to the death of another person, and she felt horrible about it. Bridget opened her mouth to apologize, only to find Julia walking towards the exit.

Before the guards could show up, Julia ran outside and scrambled to find her pistol. After a couple minutes searching she scooped the gun up off the ground and returned it home to her holster. She then picked a random direction and took of running, effectively vanishing into the night, never to be seen by Bridget or the other patrons ever again.
