10 Myths About Plumbing That Could Be Costing You Money
Most people only think about their plumbing once there's a problem. And when a problem requires the expertise of plumbers in Point Cook, it's often expensive. To avoid an unexpected and costly repair bill, keeping your plumbing in good working order all year round is essential. But there are a lot of plumbing-related myths out there about what does and doesn't damage your pipes. We're here to clear up some of those myths and help you save some money in the process!
Tumblr media
Flushing Hygiene Products Down the Toilet Is Fine
Disposing of hygiene products, such as sanitary pads, baby wipes etc., is an ordeal; flushing them down the toilet seems the easiest way to go. Also, since these products quickly go down the drain, we do not give them a second thought. However, hygiene products are one of the main culprits of clogged toilets and sewage backups. These contain materials that expand when drenched in water and can block the drains. It's, therefore, better to wrap and dispose of them in the trash can.
Running Water Will Thaw a Frozen Pipe
This one is partially true. Running water will indeed help thaw a frozen pipe. But if the water is allowed to run continuously, it can cause the pipe to burst. Once you have a steady stream of water flowing, turn off the faucet and monitor the pipe closely for any signs of cracking or leaking. If you see any damage, shut off your water valve immediately and call a commercial plumber in Melbourne for repairs.
All Plumbers Are Created Equal
Not all plumbers are licensed and insured professionals. Many "plumbers" are nothing more than unlicensed handymen who do shoddy work and overcharge their customers for it. A quick way to work with professional plumbers in Melbourne is to ask for proof of insurance and licensing before hiring them. You can also check their websites and reviews to see if they deliver quality work or if there have been any complaints filed against the person or company you're thinking about hiring.
DIY Drain Cleaning Solutions Are Just as Good as What a Professional Would Use
Over-the-counter drain cleaners might seem like an easy (and inexpensive) way to clear a clogged drain, but they're very corrosive and can damage your pipes if used too often. If you have a slow drain, try pouring boiling water down it before reaching for that bottle of drain cleaner. If that doesn't do the trick, then it's time to call in reinforcements in the form of a professional plumber in Melbourne who will take care of the problem.
Plumbing Emergencies Always Happen at the Worst Possible Time (And They’re Always Expensive)
The only remedy to combat plumbing emergencies is regular maintenance. Routine checking under the sinks for leaks and inspecting exposed pipes for cracks or corrosion are a few things one can do to avoid plumbing emergencies. But even if you do everything right, sometimes problems happen anyway. That's where having a good relationship with a professional plumber in Melbourne comes in handy because they can give you a break on the bill if they know you're a loyal customer who isn't going elsewhere.
Ice Cubes Can Sharpen the Blades of Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposals have blades or impellers that pulverise food particles so they can flow through the water waste system. These blades are blunt and never sharp; only then can they effectively tear the waste into tiny particles. Otherwise, the blades will puree the materials, creating lumps and defeating the equipment's purpose. Since garbage disposals do not require sharp blades, pouring ice and eggshells into them is no use.
Bathing During Lightning Storm Is Fine
Showering can be relieving as it will help to let go of tension and stress. However, it's not the best idea to shower during lightning and storms. As we already know, water and metal are good conductors of electricity, so when we shower during a storm, there is an increased risk of electrocution.
Bleach Can Effectively Clean the Toilets
Most people use bleach to remove dirt, particles, and dust from their toilets. If you are in the habit of using bleach when cleaning the toilet, make sure you wash the toilet within 10 minutes after using the bleach. Bleach damage is extensive and can corrode your toilet. Besides causing damage to the toilet, bleach can also cause skin and breathing issues to people using the toilet. To limit the damage, you'll need to call for plumbing service, which is expensive.
Boiling Water Can Eliminate Grease From the Drain Pipe
Pouring grease into the sink isn't a good practice. It can stick to drain pipes, collecting food scraps and other fatty substances. Eventually, all of these can develop clogs in the drain leading to expensive gutter repairs. There is a myth that people believe pouring boiling water can melt the grease and unclog the drains. However, it isn't the best way to treat blocked drains because boiling water can damage pipes and other plumbing supplies.
Minor Leaks Do Not Require Repairs
Ignoring minor leaks is not only dangerous to the home but also a very irresponsible move. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), slow drips from leaky faucets can add up to 90 gallons of water daily. Also, leaks can signal potential drain clogs, rust in the pipes or other damages. Therefore, it's advisable never to ignore a leak, and one must immediately call a professional plumber in Melbourne to tackle the issue. Fixing a leaky tab can save up to 10% of your water bill.
Concluding Words
There are many myths about plumbing, but knowing the truth can save you both time and money down the road. Be sure to educate yourself (or someone you know) about these common myths to avoid an expensive repair bill (or worse) in the future.

5 Top Benefits of Repiping Your Home
When you think of giving your home a makeover, the first things that come to mind are a new coat of paint, maybe some updated appliances, and new furniture. But what about the things you can't see? The systems and infrastructure that keep your home running day in and day out. Your home's plumbing is one of those vital systems, and repiping is the way to go when it's time for an update.
Tumblr media
Sometimes, the plumbers in Melbourne advise homeowners to opt for repiping when the plumbing supplies damage extensively. In both situations, homeowners may feel intimidated and worried about how things unfold. Through this article, we want to lessen your worries by presenting various benefits of repiping. Before that, let's understand what it is and when it becomes essential for your home.
What Do You Mean by Repiping the Home?
Repiping the house means that the Melbourne-based plumber will remove all the plumbing supplies, including waste drainage pipes, cold and hot water supply, etc., and replace them with a new, updated plumbing system.
Repiping is laborious and costly, so we recommend you get the best plumbers in Melbourne to have a detailed analysis of the situation and then proceed with it.
When Should You Repipe the House?
Some plumbing catastrophes demand repiping. If the blocked drain plumber in Melbourne finds that the drains are clogged, rusted, and withering, no amount of unclogging can restore it. You will have the only option of repiping. Below are some of the situations when plumbers do their maximum, yet repiping is the only solution left-
Frequent Plumbing Damages: If you constantly pay the plumbers for plumbing repairs yet encounter a new problem now and then, it's a sign that the damage is beyond repair. In such a situation, replacing the existing plumbing supplies can prevent further maintenance and provide peace.
Low Water Pressure: There can be multiple reasons for low water pressure at home. Though the plumbers can repair many of these, some demand repiping; only then will you get the accurate water pressure. If the drain camera inspections find that the pipes have heavy sedimentation due to corrosion and it's irreparable, repiping can help.
Presence of Lead Pipes: If your home is extremely old, there is a high chance that the plumbing lines were of lead. As we know, lead is a hazardous material, and the water flowing through the pipes can cause severe ailments. Therefore, it's best to contact the plumbers in Melbourne for repiping.
Having Galvanised Steel Pipes: Galvanized steel was the staple of home plumbing before World War II. The problem with galvanized pipes is that they can corrode after several years. As corrosion builds up in these pipes, it can restrict water flow and allow sediment to enter drinking water.
Home Restoration: If you're looking to install a new bathroom or other plumbing fixtures, replacing and re-plumbing at the same time can save you time and money.
Top Benefits of Repiping the House
Repiping is a huge investment. However, getting the best plumbers in Melbourne to perform repiping at your home can provide many benefits. Read on to know these-
Improved Water Quality
Poor water quality is one of the key reasons people decide to repipe their homes. If you've noticed that your water has a strange smell or taste, it's likely due to old, rusty pipes. Repiping will give you peace of mind knowing that you are drinking clean and fresh water.
Increased Water Pressure
Another common reason for repiping is low water pressure. You know how frustrating it can be if you've been showering only to have the water trickling out. Low water pressure can also make it difficult to wash dishes or run the washing machine. Updating your home's plumbing will increase water pressure throughout the entire house, so that you can say goodbye to those frustrating low-pressure moments for good.
Reduced Chance of Water Damage
If you have leaky pipes, they could be slowly but surely causing water damage to your home without you even realizing it. Any time there's excess moisture in your home, there's an increased risk for mould and mildew growth, which can cause health problems for you and your family. Repiping will eliminate leaky pipes, so you can rest assured knowing your home is safe from any potential water damage.
Increased Home Value
Repiping or re-plumbing your home may not be a visible option when remodelling. However, replacing your water pipes near the end of their useful life will ensure that your property is safe from potential rust and corrosion. Plumbing means that you care about your home and are willing to keep it in good condition. These initiatives will help you sell your home. Potential buyers are more likely to buy properties with updated plumbing and electrical work since these do not pose issues in the future.
Lower Your Water Bill
Are your water bills skyrocketing despite your best efforts to conserve water? Your plumbing may have cracks or holes and require replacement. Sometimes these issues will require repairs. However, if you see leaks or water discolouration, it may be due to pipe corrosion. Your home may need repairs.
Summing Up
Repiping offers many benefits for both homeowners and their families. From increased water pressure and improved water quality to reducing the chance of water damage, repiping is a great way to invest in your home.

What is a frost protection valve and why is it leaking?
It’s freezing in West Melbourne today! It was the coldest winter day in four years yesterday with temperatures in the minuses in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. With these cold mornings comes the risk of plumbing emergencies such as frozen pipes, frozen water meters and frost protection valves leaking.
A leaky frost protection valve in Point Cook or the surrounding suburbs is the most common plumbing problem we receive calls about on a cold winter’s day. Whilst Melbourne is not classified in Victoria’s frost zone, we still do see freezing temperatures in winter here as water vapour in the air freezes upon contact with an object that has a surface temperature below 0ᵒ (BOM).
Greater Western Water suggest that a simple way to ensure your water meter or exposed pipes don’t freeze over is to cover them in blankets, tarps or buckets the night before a freezing weather forecast.
Frost protection valves in West Melbourne
In most homes in West Melbourne that have solar hot water services, frost protection valves have been installed. If they don’t have these, we always suggest that frost protection valves be installed. Frost protection valves are designed to protect the hot water service’s solar panels by ensuring they don’t freeze when the outside air temperature drops. When the air temperature drops to between 3ᵒ and 4ᵒ, the thermostatic element opens in the valve and warm water is flushed through the solar storage tank in the panels which ensures the panels are less likely to freeze.
Once the temperature increases again, the valve will close and the warm water flushed through the panel will stop flowing. Frost protection valves last approximately 1-2 years.
Leaking frost protection valves
If you notice an abundance of water running off your roof and can see it coming from near your hot water system’s solar panel, you may have a fault which is likely to be one of two things: your solar panel has cracked or your frost protection valve needs replacing.
The first thing you can do to stop the flow of water off your roof is to shut off the isolation valve on your hot water system (the tap with the water line coming from through). If you don’t know where this is, you can turn off the water connected to the mains at your water meter.
Next, you’ll need to call a plumber (if you need a Point Cook plumber, or one that also serves the surrounding areas give us a buzz). Our plumbers at McCarthy Plumbing Group will then visit your property and inspect whether or not your solar panel has cracked or you need a replacement frost protection valve.
If your panel is cracked, we will suggest a solar panel bypass. If it’s your frost protection valve, our plumber will replace it with a new valve. Then your solar hot water system will be ready to face the next frosty morning that Mother Nature brings us in West Melbourne. There is no way to prevent it happening again in a few years’ time, however an annual hot water system check-up.
If you have any further questions about solar hot water systems, solar hot water bypasses or frost protection valves or require a plumber in Point Cook, Laverton North or the surrounding areas in West Melbourne contact us today on 03 9931 0905.

Can I install a bidet myself?
Bidets and hand sprayers are becoming increasingly popular in Victoria, particularly in municipalities high in residents from diverse cultures and backgrounds such as ours in Wyndham. Bidets are a French invention, dating back to the 1700’s and throughout history have been popular in Catholic and Islamic cultures.
They are also becoming increasingly popular with the elderly and people with disabilities, affording greater independence in self-care toileting.
Being Plumbers in Point Cook, Werribee and the surrounding areas, our enquiries about bidets are ever-increasing.
Bidets gained notoriety during the pandemic in the great toilet paper shortage, and the attractiveness of a bidet will only continue to increase in our environmentally conscious future as bidets use remarkably less water to use than toilet paper does to manufacture.
Bidets and hand sprayers come in all different shapes and sizes now, from LED lit toilet seats to freestanding bidets to handsprayers. They are priced from $60 to $6,000 (some even deodorise!).
We’ve had people tell us ‘They are attached to a toilet seat, so I can install it myself… it’s easy to install a bidet without a plumber, right?’ Wrong… So. Very. Wrong.
You see, bidets and hand sprayers can be extremely hygienic when installed correctly. But if installed incorrectly, by a handyman or anyone other than a non-licensed plumber, things can get dangerous. In fact, it’s illegal to install a bidet without a plumbing license.
You must use a licensed plumber to install a bidet or hand sprayer in Australia, or will be placing yourself, and your neighbours, at risk from contaminated drinking water. Sewage can travel through to your drinking water supply through backflow, or back-siphonage, causing infections and diarrhoea. If a plumber finds an illegally installed bidet or hand-sprayer, it is their responsibility to decommission it as per their plumbing license obligations.
Here are some of the things you need to know before installing a bidet/hand sprayer/douche spray legally in Victoria.
You must use a licensed plumber. If something goes wrong, you will not be insured without a plumbing compliance certificate.
All bidets or hand sprayers must be watermark certified and installed as per the Australian Plumbing Standards 3500.1.
All installations must include a high hazard backflow prevention (such as a reduced pressure zone device (RPZ)). This device ensures that any drop in mains pressure or increase in property pressure doesn’t result in contaminated water back-siphoning through to drinking water.
Reduced Pressure Zone Devices must be tested annually to ensure they continue to operate effectively
The installation costs vary greatly between plumbing companies due to their adherence to VBA regulations and guidelines; if something sounds too good to be true, it often is.
At McCarthy Plumbing Group, we value the health and safety of our clients and our community. It is for that reason we have strict protocol when it comes to installing bidets and sanitary water points. We firmly adhere to VBA guidelines and the Australian Plumbing standards and will only install them with an RPZ attached to a water meter (even if products include built in backflow prevention devices). We value our license and will not risk it on a faulty product.
How much does it cost to install a bidet in Point Cook and the surrounding areas? A legal install, by a licensed plumber including backflow prevention devices on water meters will cost between $1000-$1200 (for RPZ and labour) and can cost up to $4,000 for a retrofit system (if a water meter is below ground etc and additional works are required for compliancy/accessibility) but this would be a rare occurrence.
McCarthy Plumbing Group are your local plumbers in Point Cook and Laverton North, and are happy to chat with you about any queries or concerns you may have regarding installing a bidet or hand sprayer in your home on 03 9931 0905. We encourage you to read the VBA fact sheet on bidets here which details the requirements licensed plumbers must adhere to for compliance and the safety of our clients.

How do I turn my water off at the mains?
Burst Pipes can be stressful and are always a huge shock to our clients. If you have a burst pipe or water leak in your home or garden, our team of plumbers at McCarthy Plumbing Group can repair your pipe fast to minimize any damage to your home. We are the plumber Point Cook residents have trusted in their homes for over 8 years now.
If you have a water leak or burst pipe in your home and can assess the damage without causing injury or harm to yourself (and causing further damage to your property), try to quickly inspect where in the pipe the burst is coming from. Now you will need to turn off your water from your mains supply.
How do you turn your mains water supply off? Follow these steps:
Find your water meter. For detached suburban homes, it will be in your front garden near the boundary line. For units, the water meter may be out the side or back of your group of units, there may be one meter or a bank of meters whereby you can isolate just your meter.
Turn off the lever. On the water meter, look for a lever/handle next to the water meter at the front of your home. Turn the lever so that it is 90 degrees to the meter (or clockwise as far as it can go). You may need to use gloves or pliers if the handle is tight.
Ensure the water supply is off. You can check your water supply has been shut off by releasing pressure from an outside tap and make sure there is no water flowing out.
Call your plumber. Now is the time to call McCarthy Plumbing Group and rectify your burst pipe or water leak issue.
What can cause water pipes to burst? Sometimes they can be cause by a lot of pressure built up due to a blockage somewhere down the pipeline. Foreign objects flushed down the toilet, oils and fats tipped down the sink, tree roots growing in the pipes can all cause blockages and thus pressure build ups in the pipeline.
Another cause of a burst pipe is someone digging in the wrong spot and hitting a pipe causing water to burst out. This often happens when landscapers or home gardeners dig without knowing where pipes are in the garden area.
In colder climates water can also freeze in the pipeline which can also cause that inconvenient build-up of water pressure.
Water leaks can be caused by simply having ageing tapware or fittings that require repairs or replacement, or tapware not installed correctly or tight enough. Flexi hoses for example are common materials that require replacing often so they don’t burst.
Call our plumbing team on 03 9931 0905 immediately so we can resolve your water leak and burst pipe by repairing or replacing the broken pipe and ensuring this doesn’t happen again.
For an immediate response, please call us on 03 9931 0905. We can provide same day plumbing services all over Melbourne including Truganina, Tarneit, Laverton, Laverton North, Hoppers Crossing, Derrimut, Sunshine, Brooklyn, Williamstown, Altona, Altona Meadows, Seaholme, Point Cook, Werribee, Werribee South, and Wyndham Vale.

Blocked Drain Melbourne -  Help for Clogged Drains
Are you losing your patience with having blocked drains in your home? No need to call your neighbourhood plumber to attend to your emergency plumbing needs right away; there is something you can do about it if you will only take the time to know what you can do as well as how to go about it.
But then should the problem be difficult for you to trouble shoot or maybe, the problem persists even after having been given a quick-fix solution, then it is high-time you call Blocked Drain Melbourne for the peace and sanity your toilet and household need. Here are just a few tips and tricks about the causes of a blocked drain Melbourne that might save you some money and time.
1. KNOW THE ORIGIN OF THE BLOCKAGE -WITH BLOCKED DRAIN MELBOURNE
By determining the original cause of your blocked drains, you will know the best approach to address such problems properly. First, know if the blockage is caused by a clog in the drain pipes which are linked to your bathrooms, kitchen, laundry area and your toilets.
2. IDENTIFY THE MOST COMMON OBJECTS THAT CAUSE THE OBSTRUCTION -WITH BLOCKED DRAIN MELBOURNE
Often plumbers, upon cleaning the pipes and de-clogging, find that the most usual objects that cause such obstructions in your pipes are the baby’s diapers and wipes, cotton buds, used cotton balls, bathroom tissue paper, other sanitary products and other toilet products such as the toilet deodorizers or perhaps the holder for such deodorizers and countless others. These objects are usually flushed into the toilet bowl; thus, causing the blocked drains.
3. KNOW THE SIGNS WHEN YOUR TOILET HAS BLOCKAGE -WITH BLOCKED DRAIN MELBOURNE
You should be alerted when your toilet is beginning to drain slowly. You will know you have a toilet problem rising the minute you notice that the shower or basins are not emptying out with a regular steady flow.  You will see that the congested water would not go away until after a few minutes suggesting that there is indeed a blockage. What is worse, you will sense some unpleasant and truly disgusting odour in your bathroom because of the blocked drains. The worst thing is that the smell is not contained in the bathroom and the shower area; in fact, it will in some cases   go beyond reaching all the way to the kitchen or the living room, the dining room and at times, even the bedrooms.
BLOCKED SINK DRAINS AND TOILETS
At times, the sink’s drain pipes may also be clogged, and so if you let water flow into your sink, you will soon find your sink tub overflowing with water because of the clog. Likewise, you will know there is an obstruction in your toilet drain if you see that every time you flush, the water would not go down and would just fill the half of the bowl without getting rid of the waste. In cases like these, make sure to get in touch with your local professional plumbing services by calling blocked drain Melbourne.
