I feel like Martin could’ve been a really interesting character in tma but so much of the content about him is about jmart and being like “oh he’s so nice!”. Character who should be put on a high up shelf for a tiny bit while the fandom considers it a little maybe. He has a bunch of moments I really liked but I’m not a huge fan of the interpretations most people have.
I got somewhat more rambly than usual and most of my mutuals probs don’t want to see this so:
YEAH SO TRUE!! He is literally so compelling in s4!! There is so much to like about him!! There’s so much I want to know more about and an arc I wish so badly that he’d had!!!…..
But then he just. Kinda didn’t? Like they put a bunch of cool ideas for him on the table then pushed them all off in s5 by giving him nothing to do except nag at Jon which did nothing but make him sound really annoying. Plus like…. He was framed more righteously than before y’know? Like the narrative was leaning into those ‘cute little UwU bean’ interpretations and it just came across as so…. !!!! Like!! Annabelle Cane literally talks about how good of a web avatar he would make so why didn’t we spend ANY of s5 exploring that!! Why did we barely get to explore him at all outside of like 2 lonely based episodes!! Why is everyone convinced that he’s both super smart AND the epitome of moral righteousness!! We’ve only seen him be manipulative once (which lead do the end of the world) and then got a whole bunch of lip service about it and we were straight up told that a lot of his fluffier qualities are a straight up lie!! And nothing interesting comes of this AUGHHHH!!
Sorry for rambling a bit, I just remembered how much wasted potential Martin had and it hurt.
#Martin negative#TMA critical#like I literally loved all the s5 statements that were focused on him why couldn’t the rest of his cha#characterization in s5 been like that aughhhh.#me bwood I love you but I hate you but I love you#Please explore him. if you’re going to have JM then at least use it to explore their characters a bit more like it could be so interesting#it canonically *is* interesting it’s just also framed as the most boring and flat thing by the narrative#which is also how I feel about s5 Martin#TMA negative#anti TMA#anti Martin#Martin critical#discourse#fandom critical#trying to tag everything I can think of so nobody who doesn’t want to see this does

Dear new friend,
I just finished reading your messages. First of all, thank you. I think I would have been less traumatized out here if a lot of people took to sharing their thoughts on matters such as these in the manner in which you do.
I think I set myself up too because I be wanting to participate in certain topics and discussions and so often I find myself trying to sieve through the vitriol and pejoratives.
The gender of the word is feminine not masculine. I don’t see how that is misinformation.
"Sorry, the misinformation bit was because I was thinking about that tweet that went viral about this word being used only for woman. The person said it was an adjective, and you said it was an adjective, so I thought you were basing this information on that tweet. That day was crazy, some people spread this, wanted to change his pronouns, trend a hashtag and were saying he had came out... This was too much. And the "debunked" thing was about this tweet, as well. Not about the words being feminine and masculine. That's a fact, you're right."
I had no idea a tweet went viral like that claiming he wanted to change his pronouns. That's wild and I disagree. Lol. I think I've always maintained he uses He/him pronouns and said time and again I do not think he wants to be emasculated at all. As I said, that would have made him transgender not bigender and thus defeat the purpose. To be bigender he has to be two genders at the same time not one.
But I have been following the discussions on this topic on the bird app and I try my best to bring nuance to certain discussions. I try. Lol.
I take note of the differences between your language and Latin as you rightly pointed out. But I also do see the similarities and I think the explanation you gave and the examples you provided gives me a better understanding of the language structure.
"Yeah, totally fine hahah We tend to interpret things according to our own experiences; for me, a gendered word is part of my daily life, normal, and I don't bat an eye about it. Is just a word, the importance is in its meaning ─ and it suits filter SOOO well. For you, it's something more. At the end of the day, art is here to be interpreted, and if Jimin doesn't explicitly explain the filter performance, tattoos, set, outfits... It's open for interpretation. (And I'm not a person that tries to find hidden meanings. I simply enjoy what I enjoy. I have this thing about being as accurate as possible, so I try to stick to facts (like: I don't feel comfortable saying he chose these words, because I don't know if HE was the person that chose it (in the sense that he was the one that bring it up to the staff/company). Maybe someone else showed it to him and he was like: "Nice! I want it!". But I feel okay saying he's had a tattoo with these words (A fact). Also I don't make a big deal of most things ─ for me Jimin is Jimin and I'm supporting him regardless, he's precious)
(But Memories 2020 is coming and I'm almost sure they are going to show filter behind the scenes!!!! So we're going to understand better this masterpiece (I HOPE SO))
I understand what you mean. Some people are inclined towards taking the literal meaning of texts or in this case art and not read much into situations beyond what is presented at face value- not me🤣🤣🤣🤣
I do the magnifying glass and errthang👁
I think humans are complex and there's always a possibility of a psychological and or pathological stimulus underscoring their behaviors, choices and actions in most cases.
But that aside, I think it's easier to take a heteronormative view on things sometimes because cis straight has always been the norm even in appreciating art- but truth is, coding and co opting codified expressions is almost always part of queer culture and behavior too. If any other queer celebrity had used that expression, I would be reading much into it too beyond its semantics.
For me it's simple, would I be reading too too much into the language and art choice of someone I thought was cis straight? Hell No. Straight is boring and blunt as fuck.
Unless of course they were being intentionally witty or secretive about something, I'd assume and expect their expressions to be pretty much straight forward- generally. I went home to be would mean just that.
If I sensed the author were queer coding Home would mean something else entirely to be. Home becomes a symbol not a word. And if he chose to write that in Latin and not the language they spoke naturally, I'd assume there's something about that language that he likes and perhaps uses to code a queer message.
For closeted queer people who live in a world where they are constantly coerced to take on a duality and have an expressional alter egos- two identical identities with one being the facade and pretense through which they openly and largely perform normalcy of self, the other being their real self which they tuck away because it is inconsistent with the acceptable norms- I'd a take a very different approach to their art. But that's me.
If a straight person said they needed escape, it would mean something totally different to me than say if a queer person said they needed escape. Because those two are escaping two very different things.
For example, the words Moon and moonlight used by a straight person means nothing to me- perhaps because I just don't care much to look for its deeper meaning beyond the literal meaning of the words as presented. If it appears in a queer person's parlance, even if in passing, I assume immediately they are referencing something much more deeper, meaningful and coded.
Queer coding is a thing you know? And it's born out of necessity not choice sometimes.
Take for instance BTS's proclivity to 'queer codify' their music. Moon and moonlight has become symbolic of the inner struggles of a queer person amongst black 'educated' queer men and women. It's come to symbolize cultural norms and expectations and how those affect queer people- perhaps of all race.
In the Movie Moonlight, which has become the epitome of queer black struggles and desires for liberation, this motif was used to represent the struggles of a black boy dealing with the pressures of a hyper masculine society.
When RM references this in 4 Oclock, 'the whole world is blue under the moonlight' is he queer coding or just appropraiting queer parlance as buzz word? That expression takes on a whole new meaning were he queer. Blue symbolizes queerness- a theory popularized of course by the Film. When V who once wrote an allegedly 'queer coded song' Stigma says he is blue- what does he mean now? On the surface blue means blue. Would you take a straightforward view on this or assume its symbolic? And what is it symbolic of?? Sadness?? Gayness?
If RM had an accompanying tattoo as compliment to the song in his performance that evoked similar sentiments or hinted at a possible second meaning I wouldn't assume that that tattoo meant nothing or that it didn't have a deeper meaning behind it.
It's just as how Lil Nas X posted a city of rainbows and people said 'rainbows are rainbows. Y'all shouldn't read much into it.' But for queer people that was pretty much a declaration of his sexuality.
Later he had to post again and reiterate that that rainbow post was his coming out moment. 'I thought I made it obvious.'
Somethings are pretty much obvious.
For JM who don't speak Latin- unless he is secretly fluent in which case my bad- I don't think he cares so much about the grammar of the language beyond it's meaning. And perhaps gender? Grammatical gender I mean. That's just because the first thing you learn about Latin is that all the nouns are gendered?
I won't lie. When I first learned that I was supper fascinated about grammatical gender and why speakers of the language felt a need to gender every word of the language.
In the end, we all don't know. I'm out here convinced two Asian men are so gay they can't straight to save their asses. I have a tendency to view everything they do through queer lens. If they are not gay I'm pretty much gaslighting them you know?
I'm always fascinated by different point of views on a myriad of subjects. Just as you said, our diverse experiences inform our experiences and perspectives. I just hope people acknowledge how their straightness informs their understanding of queerness too and how that has a tendency to be invalidating and dismissive of queer issues and experiences.
But to me it's like, if Jikook are gay why do you have to interpret what they do through straight lens?
Personally, I wouldn't interpret straight through queer lens and force that view on to straight people. That would be homonormative? Assuming rainbow means straight people are gay when they are not, moon means feminine to straight men, that the use of the word God makes one a Christian- that's just silly and bizarre.
I use Namaste often and suddenly some people here think I'm Indian. I wish. They have one hell of a culture.
When I was reading through your messages, all that kept playing in my head was- that's a very 'straight' view on the matter. Lol. Please tell me you got the pun. Lol.
I think my opinion will remain the same on the matter if you placed any queer person in Jimin's stead. Any queer person that I believed was queer and had hinted a few times at exploring a dual identity or going through that phase at least.
I think I'd enjoy your blog if you had one.
I love love the lesson on Italian or is it Spanish?
Also, I would love your take on V and Stigma. A lot of queer stans have a queer reading of the lyrics- I see the appeal however I don't have a queer reading of it at all. Thoughts??
Namaste.
Signed,
GOLDY

An Interview with Tristan Spinski
Jaime Molina: Please introduce yourself.
Tristan Spinski: I grew up and have lived all over the place, both here in the US and a little time abroad in SE Asia, so wherever I've lived, I've always been from "somewhere else". For the last 8 years, I've lived along the Maine coast in the northeast corner of the United States.
I had an undisciplined, passive interest in photography growing up and through college. In my mid 20s I went off to graduate school at Berkeley to work on my writing with the goal of becoming a journalist. The program encouraged students to explore other forms of storytelling, and I opted to take a documentary photography course taught by Ken Light and Mimi Chakarova. That was in 2004, and was my entry point to photography and what was to be my career and a life fully immersed in photography and visual storytelling. You never end up where you expect to, at least not in my experience. Over the years I've migrated from news-driven priorities into conversations about land use and the intersections of culture, economy and the landscape. I recently wrapped up a project on gas drilling in Pennsylvania, where I partnered with a sociologist for his ethnography about a community that has a long history of tethering its economy and cultural identity to natural resource extraction. As that chapter closes, I'm embarking on two new series — one involving endangered birds, and another being a close examination of a landscape near my home.
JM: Why is it important for you to work with conservation publications/organizations?
TS: I believe in the work they do and feel a responsibility to contribute. Once I had a foundational understanding of photography and, through assignment work, had experienced a spectrum of issues and stories, I began to unpack my motivations and inspirations. I found/find it difficult to be honest with myself and to distill what I truly want to stand for with my life and work from the pressures, distractions and seductions of the media cacophony. And there are so many realities that influence my practice and path — privilege, family, where I was raised, what I read, my friends, I could go on forever.
JM: Is there a writer or book that influence your current practice? and why?
TS: I think every author I read influences my practice. It's a mixture of elation, that I'm absorbing a book or article and actively applying it to whatever I'm working on, and also a bit of insecurity, as I assume that I don't have a strong enough constitution of self to resist being swayed. What's that cliche about bending so you don't break?
A standout that I consider a creative "North Star" would include J.A. Baker's "The Peregrine". I've been thinking about how to describe this book to you and what it means to me for more than a day now, and everything I try to convey feels blunted and clumsy. The humility of Baker traversing the English countryside to observe and understand the falcon elevates to a synthesis of science, classical literature and meditation that makes my heart ache.
Gay Talese is also a foundational influence in my own practice. It was required reading during college, and I'm grateful for it. "Frank Sinatra Has a Cold" sets a standard for a fly-on-the-wall perspective, patience and character insight, as Talese was never granted an interview but rather was able to spend time in proximity to Sinatra as he went about his business and socialized. There's a great collection of Talese's writings, "Fame and Obscurity", that I would recommend.
Ryszard Kapuscinski has become enormously influential to me in the last few years — ground level observations and personal experiences in the field working as a reporter that glide seamlessly into the stratosphere of geo-political forces. I was on assignment in Madagascar a few years ago and brought a copy of "Travels With Herodotus" with me. The writer I was working with borrowed it while I was laid flat in my tent with a boiling rash and a debilitating stomach bug. He finished it, acknowledged how it made him reconsider our own situation and project, and then I read it as I began to recover and I share my gratitude for Kapuscinski's mastery of craft. I think it might have saved the project! "Another Day of Life" is also a mind blowing, in the worst, most necessary way. I think that whatever Kapuscinski book I read most recently would be my favorite of his and would say is the most personally influential.
And to further my point about how everything influences me, I read "The Overstory" by Richard Powers last spring, as COVID shut the world down. That set me on a course with my work to think critically about trees and consciousness beyond what we (humans) are capable of seeing. And when I say it influenced me, I don't say that lightly. After I finished "The Overstory", I started researching mushroom suit burial options for when I die (someday, hopefully not soon), so that I somehow become part of a tree as my own biomass is recycled back into the earth. I feel a bit self conscious as I write this. But it's true. I told my wife my wish/intention with this, which was jarring and probably something I could have led into a bit more gracefully. I told her to read the book, and then she'd understand. On my current landscape project, I'm thinking about this book every time I'm on site.
And now I'm reading "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I don't want the book to end. It's like eating a dish and getting upset that with every bite you're closer to finishing it. To your earlier question on why it's important to me to work with conservation organizations, I'll quote Kimmerer, out of context, here: "What else can you offer the earth, which has everything? What else can you give but something of yourself?"
JM: How have you been producing work during COVID times, and how do you think it will affect your practice in the future?
TS: COVID has been both enormously disruptive, as well as clarifying. Save two or three projects, almost all of my assignment work has been COVID-related in the past year. Only one has put me in an vulnerable situation, which was early in the pandemic and wasn't intentional. I live in a sparsely-populated, rural pocket of the United States and have stayed close to home. Most assignment work has me documenting the social and economic impacts of COVID on a regional scale. And all of this has been at the request of editors at various publications, so I have no personal attachment, other than I live here and feel a commitment to my family, my neighbors, my community and my state, so I do the best job I can under the circumstances. It's necessary to communicate what's happening and I participate because it's my job, as I consider something like this to be an "all hands on deck" responsibility and it's no time to demand to be hired for passion projects.
My personal work has stalled. Completely. I just sent a year's worth of film into the lab, none of which amounts to more than random entries to my imaginary journal. This pause has made me reset, forced me to read, think, talk out ideas, and generally reconsider what I'm doing and why. I just started an examination of a nearby landscape. I wish I had found a path forward with this project earlier in the pandemic, as it's accessible and nobody is around, but I couldn't (and still can't), which is frustrating and keeps me up at night. So now I'm attempting to work my way through it. We'll see.
JM: Could you tell us why did you decide to submit that photo to LTRF?
TS: While a lot of my work is rooted in landscape, a conversation I'm interested in having revolves around the fraying relationships and growing distance between people and most other living things. In that context, this image felt appropriate.
JM: What is your favourite bird?
TS: Ha! My favorite bird seems to change daily. I have friends who are ornithologists, and they will casually mention an insanely interesting fact about a bird that catapults that particular species to the top of my list. Or I'll read some jaw-dropping statistics and lose my mind. For instance, last autumn I got to work alongside Scott Weidensaul along the northern coast of Maine, close to where I live, as he studied migrating saw-whet owls. They are tiny and ferocious predators that fit in the palm of your hand. So I became a bit obsessed with them, and then got to reading Weidensaul's book, "Living on the Wind", about bird migrations. Early in the book he talks about Blackpoll Warblers, which use air currents to aid their transcontinental migrations from western Alaska, east across northern Canada to the Atlantic and then south to Venezuela — "an overwater trip of 2,000 miles — a passage with no rest, no refuelling, no water, during which each will have flapped its wings nearly 3 million times. 'If a Blackpoll Warbler were burning gasoline instead of its reserves of body fat, it could boast getting 720,000 miles to the gallon,' note two researchers." I had to look up images of the bird, and realize that I've seen these and never gave them a second thought. But think about how truly magnificent these little creatures are. And it's not just the spectacular that makes me love a bird. I was out walking my dogs last spring and I heard a bird chirping that sounded, to me, just like R2-D2, from Star Wars. Turned out to be a Bobolink, which also sounds like a Star Wars character. But they look like disheveled little Franciscan monks — dark bodies with a circular yellow patch of plumage on the back of their heads resembling the bald patches, which is devotional practice of tonsure. I then learned that where I walk my dogs is designated as a Bobolink breeding habitat, so it became a daily symphony of R2-D2s. And when they fly, they appear a bit slow and clumsy, almost like they've had a few beers before taking off. So maybe that's my favorite bird. I'm sure I'll read something or see something soon that turns my attention elsewhere.
JM: If you could give yourself any piece of advice right now what would it be?
TS: I'd reiterate the advice my late father, who I admire more than I can express here, gave me: Simplify.
Thank you Tristan!

Chapter 70
(At dinner, one week after John’s arrival on the island. Thus far, the meal has been silent. John has no intention of making conversation with his bastard captor and Jim has not tried to engage him. However, John can tell from the expression on Jim’s face that the silence will soon be broken.)
JM: So what do you think?
J: About?
JM: Your new home.
J: (chewing some peas) I am not home.
JM: You can’t seriously be this attached to that little flat.
J: It’s not the flat. It’s the company.
(Jim’s thin smile is unchanged, but John can tell he is angry. Furious, but hiding it well. John smiles outright and sips his wine, looking like a cat that got the cream. He makes no secret of the fact that he is delighted to have pissed off Jim.
Jim chews on his cheek and clears his throat.)
JM: Are you enjoying the books? I assume you’ve been reading them. Not much else to do, after all.
J: I am, actually. I could use a few more...if I could pop out to the library.
JM: (with a little laugh) Oh no, love, not yet. I’ll let you out of your room in a few days. Or after you get a good night’s sleep, failing that.
J: (swallowing his last bite) Sorry?
(Jim puts down his empty wine glass and looks at John with a sly, and thoroughly entertained face.)
JM: You have been here for a week and I have drugged you each and every night. That’s not what I call a good night’s sleep. Now, if you were to fall asleep on your own...after a night spent with me, I might consider letting you out of your rooms. (raising an eyebrow) Give and take, love.
(John stands and looks down his nose at the dark-eyed man, absolutely seething. John cannot even begin to express his revulsion and hate for this man.)
J: Let’s just get one thing completely straight. I will NEVER go to bed with you.
(They share a cold stare in silence until John breaks eye contact, picking up their plates from the table.)
J: I’ll do the washing up.
(John is nearly finished washing the dishes when he hears a noise close behind. His body stiffens as Jim puts his arms around John’s waist when he places the last wine glass on the drying rack. He braces his hands on the counter and exhales an angry breath.)
J: Let go of me.
JM: (whispering into his ear as he nips it) Why should I?
(John dries his hands on a small towel and then turns to face Jim. His eyes are full of anger and he puts his hands over Jim’s to remove them from his person.)
J: I may be your prisoner, but I will not do everything you tell me. I am not your slave.
(John doesn’t say sex slave, but the implication is there. Jim grins, honestly amused, and grabs the wrist of John’s scarred arm savagely.)
JM: You’re not my prisoner, John. You. Are. Mine. Need I remind you?
J: (jerking his wrist away) I DO NOT BELONG TO YOU. If you want to fuck me, you’ll have to keep drugging me because if you don’t, I will kill you with my bare hands the next time you try.
JM: Will you, John? Somehow I don’t think so.
(Jim is completely unconcerned and he smirks at John as though he knows some fabulous joke that John is not in on. John just looks at him with a kind of quizzically fury in his eyes. Jim backs away, taking his mobile out of his pocket and pressing speed dial. As soon as he get an answer, he puts it on speaker and fixes John with an intense stare.)
JM: Can you see Sherlock?
Voice: Yes.
(John’s eyes widen instantly and he takes an unconscious step forward. A sinister grin spreads across Jim’s face as he watches the emotions play out on his captive’s face.)
JM: What’s he doing?
Voice: He’s tied to a chair.
JM: Oh, kinky!
(John clenches his jaw.)
Voice: Lestrade and Hooper are with him.
JM: (with mirthless smile) Shoot him.
(John rushes forward, now standing very close to Jim. There is a desperate look in his eyes and in his voice that he cannot hide.)
J: No! Please. Please, don’t. (Jim looks at him expectantly. John closes his eyes in regret, knowing what Jim wants. He steels himself and looks Jim in the eye with a hard, determined gaze.) I’ll do what you want.
JM: (leaning in close with a smile on his face) I’m sorry. What was that?
J: (chewing on his lips) I’ll do whatever you want.
JM: (with a wicked smile, he talks into the phone) Scratch that. Not tonight.
(Jim ends the call and replaces the mobile into his pocket. He takes a small step forward so that his chest is touching John’s and takes John’s hands in his own. Their lips are millimeters apart, his breath warm on John’s face.)
JM: Kiss me, John.
(Jim presses their lips together and John kisses him back. He feels dirty and ashamed. His very actions, and everything he is about to do with Jim, are a betrayal of Sherlock’s trust and of their relationship. He can only hope Sherlock will forgive him if he ever gets off this island and out of Jim’s clutches.
When Jim breaks the kiss, he drapes his arm around John’s shoulders and begins guiding him to the bedroom.)
JM: Let’s retire for the evening, shall we, love? Now that your precious Sherlock is safe. (A cruel chuckle passes through his lips.) You can protect him every night, you know. And now you know how.
* * *
(After a shower and breakfast, John hesitantly tries the door that separates his rooms from the rest of the house and is surprised to find that Jim was true to his word. The door is not locked. He immediately descends the stairs to the first floor and moves about from door to door, finding the library, a sitting room, and a game room. He also finds that many doors are locked, but doesn’t bother much with them. He will try getting into those rooms later. Right now, his goal is getting out of the house and exploring the grounds.
John cautiously opens the house’s front door and walks out onto the porch. He takes a few slow steps into the outdoors in disbelief, nearly unable to believe this is even possible. As soon as he gathers his wits again, he runs down the stairs and the front path, and then turns back to look at the house. It is much larger and older than John had imagined.
He turns away from the house again and scans what he can see of the island’s shoreline, which is not all that far from the house. His intent is to walk the entire shoreline to get an idea of the island’s size and see if he can find a dock or another place where Jim could land a boat. He must have some way of getting off the island since he leaves John on his own every day and returns at night.
John walks all morning, stopping around noon to eat some pears and cherries that appear to grow all over the island. Shortly after, he comes to the highest point along the shoreline. He looks down the other side of his climb and sees the house below. His heart sinks as the realization sets in. He has walked all the way around the island and found no dock or any kind of landing point. Nothing. No escape. And no land in sight.
John trudges to the edge of the hill he’s just climbed and finds a cliff that descends at least 50 feet into rocks and water. He watches waves crash upon the rocks.)
Would you, Sherlock? Would you forgive me?
(John closes his eyes and breathes in the fresh air. He opens his eyes again and looks out into the sea. He lifts a foot and speaks softly, he words lost in the wind around him.)
J: I’m sorry, Sherlock.
Loud voice: Oi! Watch out!
(Startled, John loses his balance and falls backwards into the grass. He sits up quickly and turns his head to see a woman running toward him. He stands hastily as she nears him.)
MM: Shit! Sorry. I’m so sorry. Are you okay? God, I’m sorry, but you were so close to the edge and I thought you might fall.
J: No. I mean, yes, I’m fine.
MM: Thank god. (clapping her hand on John’s shoulder in relief) When I saw your balance go… I might as well have pushed you myself. Are you sure you’re okay?
J: Yeah. Yes, I’m fine. I just… I thought Jim and I were the only people here.
MM: You are. (John tilts his head, furrowing his brow. She lets out a little laugh.) I mean, I’m only here once or twice a week. I maintain the grounds. (offering her hand) Mary Morstan.
J: (taking her hand for a brisk shake) John Watson.
MM: Nice to meet you. Mr. Moriarty said he would have a house guest for a while.
J: A house guest. Right.
(Mary smiles and gives him a friendly nod.)
MM: Well, I’d better get back to it.
(She starts walking away, back down the hill away from the house. John watches her and then suddenly begins to follow.)
J: Miss Morstan. (She turns with a smile.) Uh, I’m not really… I mean, I was just having a walk, but… (smiling too) I could use some company. I mean, if you wouldn’t mind my tagging along.
MM: I don’t mind at all. As long as you don’t mind me working while we talk.
J: No. God, no. It wouldn’t bother me at all. I’d just like to have someone to talk to. Mor..Jim is always gone during the day.
MM: Great. Well, come along then. And, please, call me Mary.
(They walk down the hill together, away from the house. When they stop, Mary begins tending to some shrubs and other plants. John sits on a large stone and watches for a few minutes. The wind ruffles his hair and he looks out at the ocean. Mary glances up at him.)
MM: So how long have you been here?
J: A little over a week.
MM: Really? I’m surprised I haven’t seen you before. I’ve been on the island a couple times.
J: Well, I hadn’t ventured outside before today. Haven’t had the opportunity.
MM: Oh my god. I could never stay inside that long. I love it outside.
J: Miss, Mary, I feel utterly useless and rude just sitting here. Please let me help you.
MM: Oh, no. I couldn’t do that. You’re here on holiday.
J: (standing) And I’ll spend it as I please. Just tell me what to do.
MM: (wiping her hands on her pants and looking at him) All right, but just this one time.
J: Smashing.
(They work together all afternoon, talking constantly. John makes sure not to reveal anything specific about himself or why he is on the island. He also listens carefully to everything Mary says, trying to answer the niggling questions in his mind. Can she be trusted? Does she work for Jim as his gardener and know nothing or does she work as an operative? Is she dangerous or will she help him? Sherlock would know all of the answers in a moment, but it will take John much longer to learn the same things. Fortunately, he has nothing but time.)
J: (finishing his work and looking around) What are those trees over there?
MM: Prickly pear. Island’s full of them.
J: Pear? So you can eat the fruit?
MM: Oh, yes. They’re delicious. But wouldn’t advise handling them without gloves. They’re called prickly for a reason. (Mary stands and looks at her watch.) Time for me to pack it in.
J: Shit. Yeah, I need to get back to the house.
MM: (stepping close and offering her hand) It was nice to meet you, John. I had a lovely afternoon, and thanks so much for the help.
J: No problem.
(John shakes her hand and loosens his grip, but she doesn’t let go. They linger without words until John licks his lip and glances at the grass bashfully. Mary is showing some kind of interest and, if John plays his cards right, he might be able to learn what he needs to know about her faster than he thought.)
J: Maybe we’ll run into each other again sometime.
MM: (smiling broadly) You never know.
(She finally releases his hand and he turns away to walk back to the house. He’s about twelve feet away when Mary calls out to him.)
MM: John. (He turns.) Look, I’ll be back in a couple of days. Maybe we could meet for lunch around noon. We could have a picnic.
J: (smiling) I’d like that.
MM: Great. We could meet right here and don’t worry about the food. I’ll have enough for both of us.
J: What? No, I couldn’t…
MM: I insist. I owe you for your help. (with a serious expression) I won’t take no for an answer.
J: (laughing) Okay, okay. I’ll see you in a couple of days then.
(They bid each other farewell and John walks back to the house confident that he can find out what he wants to know from Mary. If she proves to simply be Jim’s gardener, maybe she can help him get off the island. Or at least tell him how she gets off and on the island. He would have asked, but it would give too much away. It is best she not know the true circumstances of his stay there.
John slows his pace until he has nearly stopped walking, looking up at the house as he approaches. Jim is in it. If he isn’t yet, he will be soon. John shudders at the thought of dinner and the evening with him. Jim will want sex and will threaten Sherlock again to get it. Oh god, Sherlock. How can he ever forgive John for what he has done? Will he want John to leave and never want to see him again? God, how he wants to see Sherlock again. To hold him in his arms and feel his warm body against his own. To feel his lips at his ear as he whispers how much he loves John.
John looks at the house sadly and sighs. He trudges toward it again as the sky slowly begins to darken.)
* * *
(About a week later in London, things have settled down quite a bit. Sherlock is now free from the chair he has been tied to and is functioning normally, especially considering his mind is fully occupied with trying to find John. He still believes John has left him of his own free will in a misguided attempt to protect him from further harm, but he has also decided he does not accept this separation and will talk some sense into John. Being tied to a chair for a few days has even given him a winning idea on how to make John come back to stay. He quickly dismissed that plan, however, not wanting to duplicate anything Moriarty may have done or made John feel.
For their part, Molly and Greg have spent much of their time trying to convince Sherlock that he is looking in all the wrong places because John was actually kidnapped by Moriarty. Mycroft has not made any appearances, knowing his brother would believe the opposite of anything he might tell him in an act of defiance.)
MH: He isn’t going to be in anyone’s records because he isn’t looking at flats!
S: Of course he is! He can’t stay in some kind of hotel or at a friend’s flat forever. John is the most likable person on earth, but there are limits. (He suddenly goes silent, his eyes narrowing.) You. One of you
MH: What?
S: He’s staying with one of you, isn’t he?
G: Oh, Christ.
MH: No! He isn’t staying with either one of us! Do you honestly think we would stand here and try to tell you he’d been kidnapped by bloody Moriarty if he was tucked safely away in our flats? What kind of monster do you take us for, Sherlock?
(Sherlock stands still as stone. He wears the expression of a man who was just savaged by his budgie. His eyes sweep over Molly’s countenance swiftly, dismissing the possibility that she is a very good liar. He glances at Greg, who just gives him a look of impatience, and cocks his brow. Without a word, Sherlock walks to his chair and sits, steepling his hands beneath his chin and closing his eyes. Greg rolls his eyes.)
G: Damn it, Sherlock! We don’t have time for one of your sulks. John is out there somewhere being tortured as we speak and we need you to help find him, so get off your sodding ass and…
(Sherlock suddenly leaps from the chair. Greg curses and nearly belts the detective, uncertain as to whether this is an attack or revelation of some kind.)
S: (stepping closer) Say that again!
(Greg and Molly exchange a confused look. Greg faces Sherlock and eyes him suspiciously.)
G: Get off your sodding ass and…
S: No! No! Not that. The bit about the note John left.
MH: (in disbelief) His note??
G: I haven’t mentioned in note in days. A little specificity would help.
S: “He didn’t say ‘Feel free to kill yourself with drugs’, did he”? But what did he say? What exactly did he say? (Sherlock pulls the now well-worn letter from his dressing gown pocket and begins reading it again. His lips move as he talks his way through it carefully, some words silent and others audible. Molly and Greg watch him with growing excitement.) “Dear Sherlock. I can’t be with you...can’t happen, H, again...I understand why you’re angry, E….shouldn’t have lied to you, L….Please don’t look for me, P. H E L P. What didn’t I see it before?
MH: Help? What? See what?
S: These letters, these four letters are darker than the others, but just barely so Moriarty wouldn’t notice John trying to leave a message. John must have known I would read it again and again, and would see the letters for what they are.
(Sherlock gives the note to Molly, who looks at it for a second and then back at Sherlock. She and Greg follow him around the room with their eyes as he begins to pace, stepping over furniture with no regard for its placement.)
S: And he refers to Moriarty as Jim. (He walks to the fireplace and stops, then spins around to face them.) The injuries. The injuries he supposedly inflicted on me. All of them made sense, except the one at my neck. What was it you said, Molly? That it was more like a knife pressing into my throat?
MH: (beginning to smile) Yes, that’s exactly what I said.
(Molly had said that while he was still high, but apparently some things made it through to him and now all the pieces are coming together.)
S: John would not have done that, not even in the haze of a nightmare. And he certainly wouldn’t have traipsed into the kitchen for a knife before finding me on the sofa. And Greg!
(Ill at ease at being under the microscope, not to mention the fact that Sherlock just called him by his actual name, Greg replies cautiously.)
G: Yeah?
S: The first thing you said after reading the note. (pointing at Molly) John would never say I was well to be rid of him.
G: (shrugging) He wouldn’t. He’d say it would protect you, but not be better for you. That’s like saying he didn’t give a damn about the pain he’d cause you. And he sure as hell would have apologized. He didn’t once in that whole letter.
S: Exactly!! God, I’ve been such a fool! Why didn’t I see it all before?
G: The concussion.
MH: And the drugs. You’ve been out of your right mind for days.
S: How long, Molly? How long exactly?
MH: Couple of weeks. A little more, actually.
S: (scrubbing his hands over his face) God knows what he’s done to John in the meantime.
(He dashes out of the room and down the hall to the door to the flat, pausing only to grab his coat and scarf. The others start after him.)
G: Sherlock! Where the hell are you going?
S: To find John.
MH: You’re in pajamas and dressing gown!
S: No time to change. I’ve already lost so much time to my own stupidity.
G: Sherlock?!
(He and Molly scramble to follow. Molly grabs a pair of shoes that must have been toed off at the door weeks ago. As they run to catch up with the detective, she exchanges a smile with Greg.)
MH: He’s back!

Buying my first car - which one should I choose?
I am a 22-year-old female and I'm looking to buy my first car so I can commute to my new job about 25 miles away. Can't afford Health Insurance...?
I'm looking for advice...and hopefully someone to tell me that I'm not screwed. My boss graciously offered to find group insurance for all of her employees and she is willing to pay 50% of the premiums. The problem is that she went with the most expensive plan on the market (that I've seen) and I simply can't afford it. The premium is $340 a month, so I'd be paying $170 which isn't bad...but the copays are at least +20% on everything and doctor visits range from $35 to $55 a visit, so I wouldn't be able to afford to use my health coverage often. It also doesn't include dental, which is what I really wanted/needed. I am 21 years old (and all of my coworkers are in their 20s), so I don't really understand why the payments are so high. I'm right in the midst of paying off student loans, I don't get paid very much, and I was hoping to start saving money to purchase a car and be able to go back to school. I was going to use my income tax return as a down payment on a car, but if I opt out of healthcare this year at least a fourth of that return will be taken as the fine imposed to coerce people to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. I seriously don't know what to do. Neither of my parents have health insurance, so I can't be tacked onto their coverage. I was planning on telling my boss to opt me out, but she went ahead and signed me up so I'm looking at getting $170 taken out of my check right before Christmas either way. I actually found out how much it was after she signed me up...I don't even know how she did that without confirming everything with me. Am I completely screwed? What would you do?""

Should parents pay for their kid's car insurance?
Ok, my 20 year old stepson who's been living with my husband & I for the past 6 years is now in 2nd year of college and commuting to college... After battling to get my husband to agree that he needs to be responsible and start paying for his own insurance ($50) he started in July & Aug... Granted we gave him a car to use... All summer he was not able to get a second job (all year worked pt at a store) as he delayed applying since he wanted to see his mother for the summer... Mind that his mother who lives out of state did not pay any child support for the 4.5 years he was living with us... She only paid out of court order for the last 1.5 years of his hs years and immediately stopped once he started college... Now, my step son doesn't feel he should continue paying for car insurance as he doesn't feel he can afford it and my husband feels he shouldn't coz he never asked for anything... I feel he needs to be more responsible as a young adult... Although he doesn't ask for things, I'm looking at his future and hoping that he can grow up to be responsible... He already wasted his first year in college wasting the money he had earned from the pt job always going out with his friends instead of coming home to eat or packing food... Perhaps that's b/c his dad always gave him money for lunch... He could've used that money to pay for college and save, but ofcourse it didn't happen eventhough my husband kept letting him stay in school 'till late at night sometimes as late as 2 or 3 am... Is it wrong for me to suggest that he pay his own car insurance?... I have my own son (17 yo) also from previous relationship and is getting him prepared to get his license next year when he graduates hs and have already been helping him save so he can pay for his own car insurance as well... Any input is appreciated.""

Introducing E.J. Haven and The Black Forest
Introducing E.J. Haven and The Black Forest
Hello, all you Fanatics!
We have great news– we have our very first original work coming out soon by the lovely and wonderful E.J. Haven! In this post, we’ve decided to pick her brain about the serial that she’ll be publishing with us starting this Thursday, March 8th!
JM: Welcome to Fanatic Musings, E.J.! We’re so happy to have you!
EJ: Thanks for having me. I’ve definitely been feeling the love.
JM: We know you’re busy putting those polishing touches on The Black Forest, so let’s dive in. Tell us a bit about The Black Forest. How’d you come up with this idea? What makes it special for you?
EJ: Well, every story I start and manage to make some major headway on is special to me, but I think The Black Forest holds a special place on my desktop because of how I came up with it. Like so many of my stories, it grew out of another story that I was writing at the time and an incredibly strong character. In the case of The Black Forest, two of them.
JM: Would it be a spoiler to ask who these incredibly strong characters are that demanded their own series?
EJ: Well, I’ll tell you one because you’ll be meeting him first. That’s Percival. The second you’ll meet in enough time and let me tell you that he’s quite a character.
JM: What made Percival such a strong character for you?
EJ: Well, he’s one of about ten characters of mine, across all stories, that I always know what he looks like. To explain, I keep character notes on features, personalities, etc. and because I write so much I make sure to refer to them often to keep the lines straight, but Percival is someone I already had a clear image of what he looked like, how he held himself and how that would change over the course of the story. I really enjoyed writing most of his scenes just because it was like watching a movie.
JM: Does the Black Forest stand alone or will we be seeing more serials with these characters or in this world?
EJ: I’m definitely getting convinced that an expansion of the world might be necessary, but that depends how Fanatic Musings likes this one. For now, we’ll just see how it goes.
JM: How did you get into writing? Were you a write-a-holic, it just sort of happened, or was this just a special case?
EJ: I write a lot, or at least I used to. Becoming a write-a-holic just happened because I had spare time and my imagination is rampant, to say the least.
JM: You say you write a lot, doesn’t that get exhausting?
EJ: It can depending on what I’m writing. I know that writing really emotional scenes takes a lot out of me. It’s sad actually. I’ll just be on my computer or scribbling in a notebook and I’ll start crying. I have to force myself to take a break then lest my keys get wet.
JM: Is that because you feel the way your characters are feeling or…?
EJ: Sometimes. It’s hard to get in the mindset of people who are so vastly different than I am. Like writing people who are outright evil or crazy, incredibly deluded– those kinds of people and personas are hard for me to grasp so I end up having to do a lot of research around it. Reading excerpts and so on. But sometimes it’s because the emotions of the scene, the emotions of the characters are just so powerful that it’s hard not to be pulled along. Like watching that one movie that always makes you cry. They’re people and I think that if I couldn’t sympathize with them on some level then I probably shouldn’t be writing and no one else will be able to either.
JM: Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly or sympathize with their characters?
EJ: I’m not an expert, but if you can’t sympathize with anyone, you probably can’t understand them either. It would be incredibly difficult to fathom motivations, emotional reactions and so on if you yourself don’t feel and can’t connect.
JM: You mentioned research. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a story?
EJ: It depends on the story. Some stories require almost no research besides definitions, maybe a few dates here and there, but I seem to like the ones that will take serious research time. I’d say at least a few weeks of research on average. The Black Forest took about a month of research before I felt comfortable with drafting some of the scenes.
JM: People have said that the research is the most difficult part of the writing process. Would you agree?
EJ: Nope. Research, for me at least, is the fun part. It’s part of the planning process. I also don’t think of research as just reading mountains of information. Sometimes, it’s as simple as asking questions about the world I’m trying to build and writing explorations for characters and so on. It’s an ongoing process.
JM: If not research, then what is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
EJ: Editing, hands down.
JM: Would you call it your writing Kryptonite?
EJ: Nah, that’s grammar. Editing is hard because it feels like I’m cutting up the story after working so hard to finish the draft.
JM: Spellcheck and grammar books are your enemies?
EJ: Not exactly. I just know that I don’t always write grammatically correct because I don’t think in semi-colons and dashes. You know the issue of stream-of-consciousness writing and all that.
JM: What do you feel is more important: originality or giving the reader what they want?
EJ: Well, that’s a loaded question. I personally like to sit in the middle, but that’s honestly because as a reader I want something original, but I also like a good ending. There’s a way to do that. As a writer, I’m always on the side of doing justice for my characters no matter what that looks like.
JM: Justice?
EJ: Yeah. I enjoyed the Harry Potter series as much as the next person and when I was younger I wanted to be the next J.K.. However, I never want to get seven books and millions of dollars in franchise and royalty contracts in just to have to tell my readers that I didn’t like the ending either.
JM: You’re not a fan of Ron and Hermione, are you?
EJ: Was it obvious?
JM: Very. Well, we’re running out of time. I can’t hold you hostage much longer, so how about a fun question: As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
EJ: A baby turtle.
JM: A baby turtle?
EJ: You asked.
Again, we at Fanatic Musings, are super happy to have her publishing with us. Welcome to the family E.J.! The Black Forest will be going live on March 8th, 2018 and a new chapter will be released every other week on Thursday.
