Harold Hume Piffard (1867-1939) - War suffering
Oil on canvas. 36.2 x 28.3 inches, 92 x 72 cm.
Estimate: €2,000-2,500.
To be sold Neumeister, Munich, 25 Sept 2024.
Neumeister has incorrectly catalogued this as being by Maurice Pillard. Tut tut.
Piffard was primarily an illustrator, producing works for numerous publications. The defilement of a French mademoiselle by a German soldier would have been used to stoke up anti-German sentiment and encourage British men to sign up and 'do their bit'. Piffard's own son was killed on the first day of the Battle of Messines, Belgium, 7 June 1917 whilst serving with 2nd Bn. Canterbury Infantry Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
