on december 27th, less than a full 48 hours after christmas, a targeted murder spree ripped through the denver and lakewood areas at the hands of a white supremacist. the denver tattoo community is grieving mentors and friends, children are grieving parents, and families are facing the unthinkable tragedy of burying loved ones instead of making new years plans with them. and none of this was random.

the attack began at the long-standing tattoo shop Sol Tribe on 1st and Broadway in Denver. the owner, Alicia Cardenas, was one of his first victims.

Alicia was born and raised here and was a central figure in our tattoo, mural, and indigenous communities. she owned her first shop at 19, helped to pioneer hygiene in the tattoo and piercing industry throughout the past 20 years, and opened the doors for so many in our city. i only met her in passing a handful of time, i think we may have spoken twice, and just from that i can say the warmth and strength she radiated was palpable. she was truly the matriarch of the denver tattoo community, and she turned the process of tattooing into a ritual, transmogrifying pain into power. she leaves behind her father and a 12 year old daughter. as her father said, she was like nobody you'd ever meet.

the second victim of Sol Tribe is Alyssa Gunn-Maldonado. She was a beloved yoga teacher in Denver who introduced many to their practice, and the loving wife of Jimmy, a long time artist at the shop that grew his career alongside Alicia's. Jimmy is currently hospitalized with multiple gun shot wounds. He is expected to recover, but he will have to recover without his wife, or his friend. Jimmy and Alyssa have a 12 year old son. these were good, good people who opened their arms to many and never hesitated to offer help.

after this, the killer murdered 67 year old Michael Swinyard in his own apartment, following a plan that he detailed in a book that he PUBLISHED in 2018. the same book named many of the targets in the attack. the killer owned a shop that went under in 2017, and knew most everyone involved.

he then targeted another shop owner, Justin Costilow, in his own home as well. Justin has been recovering from a near fatal motorcycle accident that has kept him from working, despite needing to support his shop, girlfriend, and newborn daughter. LUCKILY, the three managed to escape and find safety at World Tattoo on 6th, but Justin's leg was severely affected and his recovery has been set back. in addition, the killer set fire to both his car and van full of tattoo supplies, valued at $50k, that Jeremy was intending on selling to make rent and support his family. the killer previously left Jeremy threatening flyers and information about his book, where Jeremy was one of those named.

the killer then drove to Lucky 13 Tattoo on Colfax and Kipling in Lakewood. i once worked in a store RIGHT behind this shop, that's how close to home this all is. the killer walked in, murdered Danny Scofield aka Dano Blair, and left in the span of 10 seconds. Dano was also a friend and mentor to many, and a father of three children. his ex wife described him as a family man who loved everyone regardless of their story or origin. his shopmates have lost "an awesome human being, a great father, son, and brother."

the killer then fled to the belmar shopping district, where he shot a young hotel clerk, Sarah Steck. he did not know her, but had a previous vendetta against the Hyatt where she worked. tragically, she died from her injuries the following morning. she's been described as a beautiful, kind, and loving person who would go out of her way to help people. she had an infectious laugh and loved kittens, art, and music.

the killer was FINALLY neutralized after he shot a police officer in belmar, in the street corner where i fucking went to cosmetology school. police reported the initial shooting on broadway, and then encrypted their scanners, and provided NO updates to the situation until after he had died. and it was just to say an officer had been shot. no notification of additional shootings, no warning of tattoo shops being targeted; everyone in the scene had to rely on each other to learn information and notify families. the police also gave conflicting initial statements: the killer had "been on their radar" in the past and they had looked into him at least twice; but also, he had no criminal or arrest record, so the police never had reason to suspect him.

this is purely my own speculation, but considering Denver is quite literally built on a foundation of white surpremacy, i would not be surprised if he had friends on the inside who enabled him.

because of this man, children will be entering the new year without parents who should be here. parents will be entering the new year having to grapple with outliving their children who should be here. lovers are walking forward without their partners who should be here. the outpouring of support, care, remembrance and celebration of these lives show how important and beloved they were.

finally, because there's no fucking protocol on your boss being killed by a white supremacist in your own fucking shop, sol tribe will be closed for the foreseeable future while the matter is settled. all 12 artists have had to cancel all upcoming appointments and will be out of work in the wake of this. someone i consider a mentor got his start in denver at this shop, because of alicia. i cherish my ink from this shop, have fond memories of my friend champing through her rib tattoo here; i encountered alicia for the first time when she poked well-meaning fun at how the ribs are a bitch. ice cream next door at sweet action. drinks at sputnik down the road, shows at hi-dive, late nights sobering up at piehole back next to sol tribe. broadway is our local haunt, and we're all doing what we can to support our community; we are all one tribe.

To catch up, we’re now at like, 2016 in my love affair with my apartment.

My car, Dinah, was a 1989 Jeep Cherokee that I loved with all my heart. Unfortunately, she did not love me back. It wasn’t uncommon for me to have to sheepishly call up friends and family at all hours of the night because I was stranded in Seattle or Lakewood with a dead car and no way home. She would turn off if I took left turns too sharply, no matter how fast I was going (the engine mount had loose screws, causing it to disconnect from the battery). Later, I found out that I had a casual case of carbon monoxide poisoning due to a rusted exhaust pipe that leaked into the cab. I held on to that car as long as I could. Maybe that says something about my personal feelings about loyalty, but damn I loved that car.

At this point, I was working solely at the comic book shop now, and was a troop leader for a fantastic group of girl scouts. I have a habit of both being very casual when at work, while also secretly working myself to the bone. For someone who often says “capitalism is a fuck” I definitly spend a lot of non-work hours invested in my work. I’m working on getting better (that should be the only pun in this whole thing. I will not apologize).

I had a massive falling out with a friend. Looking back, I can see how bad the friendship was, but at the time, it felt like I had had the wind knocked out of me. Ultimately though, I learned a lot about standing up for myself and not backing down.

I met someone through the shop. We’d hang out almost nightly, often until 2 or 3 in the morning, talking about literally anything. We saw Rogue One in theatres together about 4 times, and got gently ushered out of bars when we stayed past last call talking politics. Me, being an idiot, thought that we were just very good friends, and that any feelings I might be developing were most assuredly not reciprocated. We’re engaged now.

Our apartment was not big enough to accommodate myself, my partner, my roommate, two cats and a very large dog. All the humans in the house had their own private libraries and large hobbies that took up a bunch of space, and all the pets loved to be exactly where you needed to be. Even though it was cramped and messy, it was warm, and it was home.

Then my dog died. Grief is hard, (obviously) but it takes on a certain, exceptional type of pain when it’s a beloved pet. I felt like I had a giant meat hook pierced through my chest and had been left to dangle for months. I held her in the vet’s office for half an hour singing “Black Dog” by AJJ until she passed. Breaking down and debunking Joel Osteen

Joel Osteen is one of the most recognizable preachers in America. Each Sunday, a total of 50,000 attendees get to see him in person. And that’s just at his one location. His sermons are listened to by 7 million people every week in 100 countries 

Wether he realizes it or not, he is unofficially a leader in American Christianity. (The reason I say “unofficial” because he was never elected like the Pope.) The main stream media is obsessed with outlandish stories, and ready to humiliate anyone for clicks. If it won’t get people talking, then there is no point to giving the story anything more than a few moments or reporting. For example, how many of you knew that in 2017, the Scottish Episcopal Church was sanctioned by the Anglican Communion for their pro-same sex marriage views?  No clicks, no attention. 

Before anyone attacks me for anti-Christian views, I just want to say that I myself am an Episcopalian Christian. True, I am not evangelical. However, this isn’t over Christ’s presence during Holy Communion or if people should be baptized at birth or later on in life. This is about a man who exploits the Christian faith for financial gain. 

In this post, I will review the long history of LakeWood Church, detail Osteen’s rise to popularity, examine his sketchy finances, and explain how he manages to dodge legal troubles. 

So here I go: 

For those of you who don’t know, this is what Joel Osteen looks like:

He is a the pastor of “Lakewood Church” in Texas. Now, I’m not talking about a traditional size Church. This isn’t what you would see if you entered pretty much any of your local Churches. He runs a mega church. To give you some idea:

Yeah. That’s his church. Know how many people it fits? 16,000. Yes. You read that right, 16,000. Counting the fact that Lakewood has several church services, the number reaches 50,000 people attending each week. 

How did he get this big? Well, he wasn’t the founder of Lakewood Church. That was his father, John Osteen in 1959. Of course, at the time- it wasn’t anywhere near this large. It’s first gathering was in a tiny shop which would later become their Church (shown below) 

As for the first official sermon, that took place in Smily High School auditorium on Mothers day in 1959. Initially, only about 90 people came. That’s about 0.56% of today’s crowd. 

Fast forward twenty years later. Lakewood was becoming increasingly popular, and they moved into a larger building. This time, the Church could hold upon 5,000 people and nicknamed their Church “The Oasis Of Love.”

In the early 80′s, Osteen graduated high school and left to study broadcasting at University. He would end up leaving after his freshman year and go back home to Lakewood Church. There, he would do something that would dramatically alter his, and millions of others, lives. Osteed created a broadcasting channel for Lakewood Church. 

Less than 10 years later, they again moved. Now they could hold 8,200. 

In 1999, John Osteen, the original founder, slowly began to die. Who would take his place? This is where things get wild. See, Joel Osteen never actually intended to become a preacher. It was John who recommended Joel to give a sermon next Sunday. After his father’s death, he took on preaching full time. 

This goes on for a few years. Then in 2003, Osteen again starts exploring the possibility of a larger church. In the end, it was decided Lakewood Church would buy the Compaq stadium. Two years and 115 million dollars later, Lakewood Church opened at the new location. 

And that’s the history of Lakewood Church. 

There is, however, something else you should know: Joel Osteen never went to Bible School. Normally, in order to be ordained and called a legit preacher, you have to get what’s called a “Master’s Of Divinity” . This has to be from an accredited university or seminary. 

For example, if you wanted to become a Methodist preacher, you could go to Methodist Theological School in Ohio. It is accredited by both The Association of Theological Schools  and the Higher Learning Commission.

With out any proper training, it’s easy to see why he gets so much about the Bible wrong.

He refuses to confront the difficult topics, most likely because he has no idea how to give a theologically backed answer. Or, maybe its because he doesn’t  want to lose donations from anyone. 

Instead, he preaches the “Prosperity gospel” which has been criticized by pretty much everyone who has a degree. This heresy basically says that if give the church lots of money, that God will return that favor by giving you more money. 

In fact, the Bible is very much against the idea of massive wealth, such as in First Timothy 6:10

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs”

While Joel Osteen’s belief is probably fake, those that follow take him seriously. People will give thousands of dollars to him in hopes that they will get back their investment. 

This is how he became popular. By selling hope to those in need, he has swindled them out of money while growing his pockets.To make matters worse, he spends almost no money on charity projects. Only 1.2 million of the 83 million dollars are given to charity. Everything else goes to administration.

So, how is this legal? 

In the United States, there are very few tax laws when it comes to religious organizations. Due to separation of church and state, religious organizations can’t be taxed. They don’t even have to make a report on their finances. 

And yes, he did pay taxes on his 12 million dollar house. However, the house itself was paid for by desperate people trying to make ends meat. 

One of the most controversial thing he has done, though, came during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. He closed the doors of the Church to those needed a place to stay because it was flooded. Although, photos started being shared of his church not being affected. 

So. yeah.

The Good Points of Sliding Gates on Fences

There are several good points to installing sliding gates on the perimeter fencing around your property versus installing the traditional ones that swung to and fro on hinges. Most of the times when you are talking about fences you need to consider the purpose of the fence in order to determine the style you should install and the materials you should use to do this. The sliding gates on these items are more useful for the people with certain types of fences than they are for other people.

Sliding gates on simple yard fences that are no higher than four feet are unnecessary and they would look very strange. These type of enclosures are designed more to establish the perimeters of a piece of property than they are to keep anything from getting onto the property. They do deter children and the neighborhood dogs from running on your grass and through your flowers beds, and they keep your children and pet in your yard, but they are basically there for the looks.

Sliding gates on fences that are enclosing commercial properties like auto repair shops make better sense than the old swinging style do. You can secure the sliding gates better than the ones that were mounted on hinges and therefore you can make the property more difficult for thieves to get onto.

When you have sliding gates you do not lose a large portion of your property to the area where the gate swings. The panels on hinges swing open and closed like the doors on your house do and you have to keep the area in front of them free of obstacles that might hinder them. In commercial areas where space is often limited this amount of space can cause difficulties.

These types of closures are less likely to have problems and need repairs. The old versions that swung on hinges can become warped and then they do not close well. The holes where the hinges are attached to the post can become enlarged and then they do not close well because the gate begins to sag. The sliding gates do not have these sagging problems. The biggest problem with them is that the ground beneath them needs to be relatively level for them to operate correctly.

You will be able to install automatic closures if you have the type of panel that slides from side to side. You can also install these panels on steel fencing that is part of an electric fence, or a high security fence. The panels are sturdy in design and it generally takes a power tool to cut through them, where the old style gate can be easily taken down from its hinges and then put back when the criminal is through.

You can easily install these pieces yourself or if you prefer you can have them professionally installed. Maintenance is very easy on them but you will want to oil the wheels on occasion and check them for debris.
