4cr Plays - Piczle Cross Adventure (Switch)
Tumblr media
I am a nonogram fanatic. I don’t know what exactly it is about the things, but I just can’t get enough of the little draw-by-numbers puzzles. Few games suck me in as intensely as a good Picross (or the indie equivalent).
In the past, I thought I was more-or-less alone in this. Nonogram games were few and far between. I even found myself hunting down ROMs of Picross games released for the Satellaview broadcast service for the Super Famicom just go get my fix! Now, on the Switch, there are so many nonogram games coming out that I have actually found myself falling slightly behind!
The latest twist are games that wed nonograms with a broader gameplay structure torn from another genre. The ingenious Murder by Numbers combined nonograms with a visual novel revolving around solving crimes. The recent PictoQuest merged nonograms with RPG mechanics. Now, we have Piczle Cross Adventure, which places the puzzles within a story-driven 2D adventure.
Tumblr media
If you have never solved a nonogram puzzle before, let me explain the concept. You start with an empty grid. Each row and column of the grid has a series of numbers on it. Your goal is to fill the correct cells in the grid to create an image. You can think of it as a form of “paint-by-numbers”, where you need to identify the right spaces to mark for form a pixel-art painting.
The numbers on a row or a column tell you how many spots need to be filled in. If you see a “5″, you know that a five-block sequence will need to be filled, while blocks before and after those five will remain unfilled. To figure out which five need filled, you need to look at the corresponding columns (if you are working on a row) and see if you can match the conditions placed by the numbers on each of those. You will often see multiple numbers, like “2 3″, indicating that there are multiple sequences that will be filled in. In this case, the row would have a sequence of two filled-in blocks, then later, a second sequence of three filled-in blocks. At least one unfilled cell must exist between the two sequences. Again, you need to use the other clues to identify where the two sequences lie in the row.
Tumblr media
That’s about all there is to it. Identify the spaces to fill, mark off those you know will not be filled, and try to complete the picture as fast as you can without making any mistakes. As pictures get larger, this becomes a tougher task. Even as a novice, you can probably complete 5x5 or 10x10 puzzles without breaking a sweat. As the puzzles grow, you may find it a little harder to keep track of everything. Still, try not to panic. A great thing about nonograms is that you should never have to make a blind guess. There is always enough information to unravel the next spot - it just may take some searching to identify it.
Piczle Cross Adventure presents its puzzles in a classic form, without additions like multiple colors or layers that have been used in other recent games. This is not a complaint, however, as the puzzles are well-designed. I’ve had a lot of fun chiseling my way through the game, and it has a lot of great little challenges in it. The primary enhancement on standard puzzles in Piczle Cross Adventure is that some larger pictures are broken up into a series of smaller puzzles. As you complete the individual small puzzles, you reveal that larger picture. In these cases, it may pay off to keep each surrounding piece in mind, as they will offer clues on where the borders of your current piece lie.
Tumblr media
The most unique aspect of Piczle Cross Adventure is the inclusion of a massive overworld and story to guide your puzzle solving. The story revolves around the evil Mona Chromatic, who has unleashed the pixel-powered robot under_SCORE on the world in an attempt to rob it of its color. Score-chan, pet/companion(?) Gig, and Professor Matrix - the ostensible “protagonists” of the previous Piczle games - have set out to restore the zapped items and put the world together again.
This story is mainly a way to guide you from puzzle to puzzle. Each item is restored by completing a puzzle representing it. The overworld, presented in a 2D overhead Zelda-like manner, is broken up into a series of regions. Each region has a number of items to restore. Often, you will find that your progress is gated until you find a particular item from a different region. For instance, a fallen tree might block your progress in one direction until you restore a chainsaw in a different area and bring it back to clear the path.
Exploration of the overworld is not particularly deep. Other than unlocking items for simple puzzles, there isn’t a ton to do. You get XP for completing puzzles, but levelling up doesn’t really grant new abilities - beyond opening up more difficult puzzles. Still, it is a pretty compelling twist on the standard formula. Some puzzles are well-hidden, inside trash cans or behind trees. Hunting down every puzzle and filling in that section on your overworld map is an addictive process. The story and exploration give a nice feeling of progress as you work your way through.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned, I played Piczle Cross Adventure on Switch. It is also available on Steam. I’d personally chose every time to play this kind of game on a portable system, so I’d recommend getting the Switch version. It looks nice on the tablet - though, I had to turn off the fake overscan. It also makes nice use of the HD rumble on the Switch. This is the kind of game that benefits from portability and being able to play a few puzzles in bed before you sleep.
Overall, I really enjoyed Piczle Cross Adventure. If you like nonogram puzzles, the ones in this game are really well designed. I also enjoyed exploring the overworld, trying to hunt down those last few obscure puzzles. If you’re looking for that next puzzle fix, this is definitely a game to look into.

[Review] Piczle Cross Adventure (NS)
Tumblr media
An excellent nonogram game with welcome adventure elements.
The small team at Score Studios has been developing its Piczle series of puzzlers for over a decade now. It’s covered a few different forms of logic puzzles, but this ambitious instalment combines traditional Picross-style nonograms with a lovely presentation and a world to explore in between puzzles!
In this way it’s evoking Jupiter’s Japan-exclusive Picross 2 on GB, where Mario walks through an overworld between puzzles. This game takes that further with non-linear exploration and RPG elements like experience levels (puzzles have a level threshold requiring you to clear earlier ones) and an inventory of keys and hidden items. I took pleasure in unlocking everything, the final reward being a Game Boy-style set of 20 bonus puzzles, on top of the 319 in the regular game.
The puzzles are integrated into the world in a fun way. In the story, the studio’s mascot Score-chan has to solve the puzzles in order to restore objects that have been zapped into the void. So by exploring you find holes, then bring life and colour back into the lush pixel world with its varied environs; it’s quite satisfying. And speaking of pixels, the game includes scanline and CRT warp filters; they weren’t to my taste but thankfully could be turned off.
The small bits of dialogue and writing in the story were quite amusing, the aesthetic is charming, and the puzzles are good! The publisher Plug In Digital has a cross-promotional deal with another game they published, PictoQuest, which I played previously. Compared to that game’s attempt to expand the Picross formula with RPG mechanics, this is more successful and polished. I heartily recommend it!

What's your favorite nonogram game? Mine is picture cross from the google play store (the logo is a rubber duck)
I mostly play them on switch, Piczle Cross Adventure is my absolute favourite. Really funny story, cool pixel graphics, and it has good customisation features to make things easier so my dumb ass can keep up

January 28th is my birthday, dubbed Meimiday several years ago by my friends (I think it was hojo who started it). For those years, I would spend all day watching streams from said friends playing games for my birthday entertainment. Ten years ago, however, when asked what I’d like to see I kinda just went “Why don’t you just beat some games?” and so the festivities truly began. Most of us frequent the Backloggery, so it’s kinda easy to see why it has snowballed~

Piczle Cells (Nintendo Switch) - Le test
Piczle Cells (Nintendo Switch) – Le test

4cr Plays - Pixel Puzzle Makeout League (Switch)
Tumblr media
Hi, so, yes, this is a little awkward. It has been awhile, hasn’t it, since my last post on this blog? I’m sure you have many questions.
“How are you?” “Did you catch Covid-19?” “Where is my money?”
Or, more likely, “Are you really popping in after a couple of months of inactivity to discuss a hybrid of Picross and a dating sim?”
The answer to that, dear readers, is yes. Fuck, yes. I am a fiend for Picross - logic puzzles where you fill in a pixel image based on numeric clues (also known by nonograms, pixel puzzles, and other names). I dove immediately from replaying the fantastic Mario’s Super Picross (available for Switch Online subscribers in the SNES app - it is a must-play!) into the subject of this post, Pixel Puzzle Makeout League.
Tumblr media
We are truly living in the renaissance period for Picross. In the old days, you had to wait years between releases of the Nintendo published series. Here and there, you might find an obscure Japanese import to help fill the gap. However, the advent of downloadable games, indie development, and mobile platforms have created more than enough takes on the core concept to give Picross fiends the constant drip feed needed to stave off the shakes (I feel seen). In addition to a bunch of variants of classic Picross, we have Picross-with-colors (Pic-a-Pix Deluxe, Piczle Colors), Picross-with-layers (Depixtion), graphic adventures (Piczle Cross Adventure), RPGs (PictoQuest), and murder mysteries (Murder by Numbers). Now, Pixel Puzzle Makeout League (PPML) introduces romance to the mix.
If you have never played one of these games before, it is worth taking a step back and explaining the core concept. You start with an empty grid. Each row and column of the grid has a series of numbers on it. Your goal is, simply, to fill the correct cells in the grid to create an image. You can think of it as a form of “paint-by-numbers”, where you need to identify the right spaces to mark to form a pixel-art painting.
PPML offers both touch and button controls, but I’d really recommend just using the buttons. I feel the same about all of these Picross games - the buttons just give you more precision.
As pictures get larger, keeping track of all of the numbers becomes a tougher task. Even as a novice, you can probably complete 5x5 or 10x10 puzzles without breaking a sweat. As the puzzles grow, you may find it a little harder to keep track of everything. Still, try not to panic. A great thing about these puzzles is that you should never have to make a blind guess. There is always enough information to unravel the next spot - it just may take some searching to identify it.
Pixel Puzzle Makeout League mostly sticks to the traditional Picross format - eschewing twists like colors or layers that other games have applied. This is fine. Even as someone who has solved thousands of these puzzles, there are so many different images you can form that it is not like the format itself grows stale. The actual puzzle quality in PPML is solid - nothing that will drive you insane in terms of difficulty, but not too easy either. There is a satisfying quantity and variety of puzzles, and there are a ton of bonus puzzles you can solve on the size to unlock themes - or when you want to take a break from reading.
Tumblr media
No, the core “twist” in PPML is the dating sim side of the game. Really, like Murder by Numbers, PPML is a visual novel. The game is broken into a series of scenes, where you read though dialogue between the characters and puzzles are used to accentuate the drama. The story revolves around a group of “superheroes” - four people who have been imbued with supernatural skill at solving different forms of puzzles by a mysterious power.
Our protagonist, Pixel Girl, is the newest recruit to the Puzzle League, and is able to solve pixel puzzles with finesse and grace. Sudoku is a shy gamer who just wants to get back to her MMO group. Leader Chess is the tactical “genius” of the group, while Crossword uses his endless reservoir of knowledge to solve mysteries. Finally, we have Piecea. Piecea is... Well... Piecea is a sentient puzzle piece from another planet. He? She? They are, naturally, really good at puzzles.
At the beginning of the game, Pixel Girl is kidnapped by a mysterious villain, Villain, who seems quite intent on getting her to join him in his sinister plot. You escape, but the next day, a massive “puzzle tower” emerges over the city. Together with your fellow Puzzle Leaguers, you need to put a stop to Villain before he can begin his reign of terror.
As you can imagine, based on this description, PPML is not the most serious of games. The story and dialogue are actually really fun and well-written. The game itself is full of jokes about the different genres of puzzle involved, and the entire thing is just the right mix of humor, charm, and the surreal to be entertaining. I mean, it’s a game about a bunch of puzzle-based superheroes, and you can date a sentient puzzle piece. How is that not amazing?
Tumblr media
The actual “romance” portion of the game comes into play at points where the game splits into different paths you can take, where you pick one of the characters to tag along with. During these alternate paths, you get to know the character you picked and grow closer to them. A nice feature of this is that your choice is not binding - as the plot always converges back to a central path, you can feel free to explore the potential relationships with each or all of the characters. You also get different puzzles along each path, giving more incentive to see every conversation. I’m a fan of Sudoku, but - come on - I also had to see what happened with the alien puzzle piece. How could you not? Really, all of the characters are charming enough that it is worth going down all of their paths.
In truth, I’m not generally into dating sims, or even really the romance elements of most games. They tend to be some mixture of cheese, creepy, or just badly written. Here, the writing is cute and clever enough that I like it. There is just the right blend of romance and sarcasm to make it all work.
Tumblr media
Pixel Puzzle Makeout League is fantastic. It is a fun and clever take on the Picross formula, effectively using puzzles to liven up the visual novel. The writing is fantastic - a bit metatextual, a bit tongue-in-cheak, and a lot of genuine charm. All of it presented with nice art and enough puzzles to keep you busy for quite a while. If you are into the general Picross drama, then PPML is absolutely worth a look.
Just watch out for that alien puzzle piece.

Shovel Knight joins this week’s eShop roundup
As we head towards the end of the week, it’s time to reveal what’s new on the Nintendo eShop. This week’s Nintendo Download includes the platforming prowess of Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope. There’s also the quirky-sounding Later Daters, a role-playing game involving senior citizens who date each other at a retirement community.
There are plenty of other titles to choose from, too. Check out the full list of new releases below, and let us know which games will make their way into your digital collection this week.
Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch
Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope – Enjoy the original standalone adventure that launched Shovel Knight on his quest to discover the true meaning of shovel justice. Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope is a sweeping, classic action-adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It’s a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small warrior with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!
Later Daters – You’re the newest resident at Ye OLDE retirement community, where you’ll meet a cast of charming seniors who are all eager to greet you. It’s a lot like summer camp, but with orthopedic shoes, bridge clubs and way more gelatin. Customize your look, name, history and gender as you date and flirt with eight fetching residents of Ye OLDE. Adventure, passion and transformation are all on the table in this role-playing simulation. Who knows: maybe these will turn out to be the best years of your life!
