hi! ~a belated studyblr intro~

just realized i never did a proper intro for this blog!

so, hello, i've been flip flopping between taking lessons and self-studying piano for several years and this blog was (and still is) intended to be a studyblr to track my progress.

i'm currently self-studying as my time is split between this and STEM studies (more on that on my side blog @studentbyday) but i really really hope to finally establish a consistent practice (after struggling to do so for many years 😅) so i know i will be able to handle weekly lessons again 😤

🎓 goals for piano/music studies:

enjoy playing music (including without headphones)

establish sustainable routines so i can practice piano every day or at least every week

get over stage fright and paralyzing perfectionism

improve my sight reading

motivate myself to learn more music theory and use it to analyze my favorite songs

find fellow music enthusiasts on tumblr!

ultimately play piano at an LRCM level 🙈 (as of 2024, i am currently L6-7 in baroque/classical, L8-9 for romantic...yeah, kind of all over the place since I've been treating this very informally over the years and keep taking hiatuses lol)

so impressed by your transposing skills! what is your musical background? were you in choir or band in school? I got my degree in music (voice major) and seeing your sheets really took me back.

i’ve been playing Alto Sax since I was 11 mostly with school orchestral bands, and was also in chorus through that time.

I picked up bass when I was around 17 or thereabouts for funsies and because yk bass is fucking great.

I think i’m so nonchalant about it bc I never had like private lessons or higher schooling with either and so like I guess it’s sorta like….mostly self taught and I always seem to put people who’ve been professionally taught/trained so far above me.

I used to practice daily with one or the other or both to keep up but I’ve barely been able to play either for like the last god like 6 or so years. so like while i still know how to play it’s like getting my hands to fucking do it and getting my embouchure and breath control back up to par 😂☠️☠️☠️

I like to think I have a pretty good ear lmfao playing by ear is also a fun challenge. I’m definitely better at it with my sax but yk more experience there.

And oh god. fever dream. I fucking love every aspect of that song with every fiber of my being jfc. Of fucking course I will. It’s a win win too bc then I could fuck around on it with my sax after too >:3

Other than that I just really fucking love music. Like one of my biggest coping mechanisms is to put on a song and focus on an instrument (usually bass unless I’m in the mood for some sax or piano) and identify the time signature, bpm, tempo range, and key. It works almost every goddamn time.~🎃

the audible metronome at the beginning of wttbp is my g-note actually, forget how viscerally it effects me like my god. a small mistake becomes almost like a ticking clock. a blemish in this hyper-polished track, similar to ray toro's bedroom solo, which makes it alive. i am talking about a faint incidental background noise like it is a purposeful artistic choice. which has made me cry before.

one thing i like and kinda grew obsessed with in becoming knowledgable about tfs was going to ppl like. hey you the transformers theme yeah? how does it go? and if u can get someone to play with you they probably do the "robots in diguise" bit or "more than meets the eye". possibly both.

but then you can go. how about the rest of it? and if theyve never heard the g1 version, u get to show them this rhymic glory. (notice about 10secs in)

yeah thats the good shit. i really enjoy seeing ppl experience it for the first time. u can also catch the outro version in there.

What is Traveler Basil?

A silly, laid back OMORI AU where instead of being.. ahem “sent away”, Basil finds himself being tossed around HEADSPACE and taken under the wing of multiple bosses!

What to expect from this blog?

This is mainly just a way to dump all of my doodles and things I’ve made for this AU, since I’m not taking it too too seriously and need a place to put all of the info neatly and organized!! But I think it’d also be fun to do a sort of ask blog thing.. to both have some fun playing around with certain scenarios, and to help myself flesh out the AU, too!
