After so many years, I finally came with a fursona design that will stay!
Auburn Rochan
"Reborn from the mud, like a lotus flower~"
Nicknames: Abbie, Ro-Ro, Burnt @$$.
Species: Soay Sheep mixed with Red Deer.
Build: Chubby/Curvy, average height (5′4″).
Occupation: Child Social Worker and Artist/Writer.
Elemental alignments: Earth and Water types (Most common combo)
Song: I'm Still Standing · Taron Egerton
Background:
After escaping from what it seemed to be an Earth cult along with her dad and siblings, Auburn was left with the good ol' question of  "What am I going to do with my life?" once her family settled down in a safe place. She enrolled herself in the career of physiotherapy for a while until she realized that it was not what she wanted, but still desired to help others through her occupation. A legit crippling feeling of despair came by, until the social worker career was mentioned while she temporally served at the Lotus Scouts... The rest is story.
As a character, Auburn is passionate, reserved, stubborn as a mule from time to time, and committed to helping others, sometimes forgetting that she needs to care of herself first even as an adult. Since childhood, Abbie took heavy interest on the space, the ocean and what could be out there during those sheltered years... Not that she is able to remember a lot, it is more of a chaotic series of events than a structured timeline, gotta love the loss of memory data.
Nowadays, Auburn lives in a apartment complex along with the fam and a huge diversity of furry people, from small rats in the last floors to huge Elephants in the first ones. When the family has free time, they usually have a plan to go outside and enjoy what the nature has to offer while they stay very far away of others and the noisy town that sometimes can be waaay too much. You may think "What is the strange thing that Auburn carries?" Well, it is a small orb that mimics natural sounds (Ex: Water waves and effects of wind in the trees) and other soothing sounds that was especially created for neurodivergent individuals whenever they felt overwhelmed by squeezing it a bit... But sure, that does not stop neurotypicals to buy things that were not made for them, F.
The storyline of .:In A Modern Land:. takes place in the present timeline and while it may considered to be the most peaceful of the arcs, it does not mean that is drama-free... I just need to write more of it first since the previous arcs (.:CoM:. and .:HK:.) influence this one, haha.
Special Info:
- Auburn can't stand pasty rice since it reminds her of worms, which makes it impossible for her to shallow. Not only that, but sometimes she feels grossed out by some weirdly-textured foods and clothes, the latter leaves her feeling like she has ants walking under her fur and that itself caused many issues with her mama, who loved to buy clothes without asking her to try them first.
- She adores swimming, especially if it is far away from the town and concetrated in natural areas. There is a lotus flower in consideration due to its symbolism of rebirth, because that is what she felt after leaving that cursed place and because tattoos were considered taboo, like a final middle finger since they have no control over her and her decisions anymore.
- Her stimmings consist on: Cracking joints, shaking a leg while sitting, bouncing and jumping, pacing, flapping her fingers like they are bird that is flapping when nobody is present due to the embarrasment that it could bring, and sometimes repeating the last word that another person said whenever she realizes it or not. Those "behaviors" were unnaceptable and she stopped doing them to avoid trouble back then. However, it was very hard for her to concentrate if she did not engage in at least one of her stims.
- While reserved, when she finds the motivation, she can ramble about a lot of things, they can range about totally normal things to... Uh, girl wtf???
- She hates alcoholic drinks, not because she feels superior to those who drink, but the sheer fact that it does not taste good for her. Also, she can't help, but roll her eyes when she hears the "When are you going to striaghten your hair?", she loves her curls, thank you very, very much.
- Despite being reserved, she likes to be part of a small community of scouts. She found a great friendship in a Sabertooth who is the daughter of the leader, both of them are different personality and species speaking, but they get along just fine. For some reason, Auburn is drawn to befriend the types of people who were unnecessarily labeled as evil in her past, as time passes by, she cares less and less about her ooutdated teachings. Nevertheless, there are some bias that she still need to work on.

Odds & Ends 12/17/19
oh man it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I hope everyone is having a nice day and getting some well-earned rest!
Most of my work so far has been editing/rewriting/drafting stuff, so there hasn’t been much to update y’all with, but I finally got moving forward with the story! To celebrate, here’s a bit from the chapter I’m currently working on in which our heros call in a favour:
Idalia spots the woman she’s looking for. She is sitting at the bar, back to the room. Her hair is cropped short, ending in sharp wings framing her chin. An array of tattoos across her shoulders cry out an exclamation of colour that rival the display of glasses and containers behind the bar. She’s alone, nursing the drink in front of her.
Idalia takes her drink and slides out of the booth.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Ceri Cattell had planned on drinking and relaxing tonight. She takes a swig from her glass, giving herself a moment to lament the disappearance of those plans as she catches sight of Idalia making her way over.
“Well, look what the cat dragged in,” she drawls as Idalia approaches. “Having a nice evening?”
Idalia wasn’t. “Not in the slightest.”
Ceri’s drink lets out a puff of smoke as Idalia places her own next to it.
Idalia would really, really rather not have to call in more favours than she has to. Her connections are plentiful, but they’re hers, goddamnit, she doesn’t want to waste them on the two idiots who are currently attacking their meals with a fervor that is only unconcerning because they are in a tavern.
That being said, considering the subject this current favour involves, Ceri might just be willing to help out of the goodness of her heart. Provided, of course, that she’s allowed a few conditions concerning the lengths she’s allowed to go to get information.
Ceri watches with a cool grin as Idalia sighes. “I gave you a discount on that bottle of enchanted tattoo ink.”
“That you did.”
“I’m calling in that favour.”
“That’s not how discounts work.”
Idalia’s eyebrow twitches down. “I already let you know whenever something comes in that you’d be interested in. I’m calling in that favour. Trust me, Ceri, this is something that you will want to take advantage of.”
Ceri turns back to her drink. “What’d you get stuck with this time?”
Idalia matches her as they both toss back the drinks. “A dragon,” she says simply. Ceri scoffs.
“There’s dragons rooting around in the rubbish bins behind this bar. What d’you have that’s so special?”
Idalia orders her a second drink and explains.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Quinn is halfway through shoving food into their mouth when Idalia returns with Ceri. They freeze, mainly because the woman behind Idalia makes them squirm. Not in a dangerous way, but more like they just… don’t want to be in her direct proximity. The fact that they currently have their cheeks stuffed like an overeager chipmunk only aids in the sudden need to curl under the table.
“Who’s this?” Theo asks. Ceri grins at the twins, eager and sharp around the edges.
“I’m told you have a very interesting proposition for me.”
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Ceri’s house is large. Like, weirdly so. It’s made from red bricks that have faded with time, and extensions have been piled on seemingly absentmindedly. Like paragraphs shoved into an essay just to meet the minimum word count.
A wooden porch wraps around the front of the house, tapering off into a set of alarmingly crooked stairs leading up to a small crawl space near the roof. A balcony juts out on the opposite side of the building, dwarfing the greenhouse squatting under it. Various other attachments are shoved against and hammered on at uneven intervals. An iron fence swoops around the entire building, jagged talons curving away from the top, reaching towards the house.
Not meant to keep people out. Meant to keep things in.
Theo’s back cracks as he steps out of Ceri’s car and stretches his arms above his head.
“Is this a fun house? This looks like a fun house,” he says. Quinn exits after him, egg in hand.
Ceri locks the car. “It’s my house. It’s fun, depending on what you’re into.” She pushes through the gate, which honestly should have been locked, but Ceri doesn’t seem to care.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
The inside of the house is… normal. Quinn is only slightly disappointed by this discovery. Theo is very disappointed, but he compliments Ceri’s choice of decor all the same. She hums in acknowledgment.
The twins linger awkwardly in the doorway. Idalia walks further in, talking quietly to Ceri as she puts away various items from her pockets. Quinn rotates the egg in their hands. They still feel somewhat nauseous and dizzy, like they’re trying to stand on a swaying bridge.
They jerk their head up as a clattering sound comes from the stairs and suddenly there’s. A whole griffin. Inside the hallway. Idalia stifles a shriek and takes a step back, bumping into Theo who lights up at the sight.
Quinn suddenly feels queasy for a whole different reason.
The griffin skids around the corner, narrowly avoiding crashing into the wall before coming to a stop uncomfortably close to Ceri. A voice that really doesn’t sound like it should be coming from a griffin calls out.
“Ceri, Ceri, I can’t wait to tell you about the eggs! The eggs, Ceri, the Augurey eggs are hatching soon, I can tell because Princess wouldn’t even let me into the room this afternoon, she’s getting super protective over them and that has to be a good thing, right? Oh! And the baby deer are beginning to walk! See, I told you that they weren’t a lost cause, the physiotherapy was worth it and oh my goodness they’re so cute and who are these people I didn’t know we were having guests?”
Okay, so. The voice isn’t coming from the griffin. Quinn spots a soft pink and purple hijab as a young woman pops up and looks down at them from the griffin’s back.
Ceri walks around to the griffins shoulder. “Idalia, Theo, Quinn, this is my wife, Soha.” She stretches up on her tip-toes as Soha places a small kiss on the top of her head.
Idalia, still mentally cursing at the fact that she’s standing in front of an actual griffin, introduces herself. Quinn shifts the egg to one hand and extends the other as they introduce themself.
Soha nudges the griffin forward and leans down to shake their hand. This allows Quinn to see a large saddle affixed to the griffin’s back, leather straps and belts securing Soha’s legs to the animal.
Soha, fortunately, has the opportunity to catch sight of the egg, and she lets out a high-pitched sound of excitement. Idalia lets out a squawk of alarm as she leans almost horizontal off of her seat to peer down at it. Behind her, Ceri grins.
“That’d be your new project.”
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
The five of them (six, if you count the griffin, who Soha delightfully introduces as Soot) make their way to the basement.
The house is distinctly less normal the further in they get. They pass rooms that have apparently been remodeled by someone with no cohesive sense of style. There’s a beige room covered in sand and large stones next to a room hosting so many plants Quinn can’t see the far wall next to a pitch-black room that let out a low, guttural growl as they pass by.
Theo quickly closes the door to that one.

Free Falling, Chapter 7: Buffoonery, Riggory, and Straight-Up Tomfoolery (Branjie) - writworm42
A/N: Thank you holtzmanns for always being a champ and keeping this brain cell going, as well as being my beta ❤️
The holidays were always a big deal at Charles-Visage. There was Halloween, when the kids all dressed up in donated Halloween costumes and visited the lounges in the adult inpatient units in supervised groups to go ‘trick-or-treating.’ The winter holidays were always wonderful too, the holiday-themed rec shows and staff parties at every turn putting everyone in a great mood. Thanksgiving always brought fun crafts and the most scrumptious recipes in cooking group, and Mother’s and Father’s Day filled the unit with faux flowers that gave everything a little extra pop of colour.
But this year, the holiday that Vanessa was looking forward to the most was Valentine’s Day. As cliche as it was, Vanessa loved seeing the unit done up in red and pink crepe paper, loved how the volunteers would go from room to room dropping handmade “valentines” filled with encouraging messages and doodles of flowers and Cupids at each of the children’s bedsides. She loved how a big bowl of heart-shaped chocolates would appear at the nurse’s station, the supply quickly dwindling as A’Keria spent a suspicious amount time “documenting” with Ra’jah. She loved asking her kids if they had someone special for Valentine’s, loved watching them wrinkle their noses and squeal as she teased them. Most of all, though, she loved that this year, she actually had someone special for Valentine’s, even if that someone didn’t know it yet.
Although lately, Vanessa was starting to think that Brooke might.
Ever since the business meeting, they’d been starting to spend even more time together. Vanessa would bring Brooke coffees mid-day, check in with her and ask how she was doing, and Brooke would return the favour with a smile and a conversation about how Vanessa’s day had gone at the end of her shift. Brooke invited Vanessa to stay late while she worked, and they would spend the hours chatting while Brooke typed, barely losing concentration as she calculated figures while presenting a well-thought-out argument as to why Dirty Computer deserved the Grammy more thanSweetener. And all that time was paying off–slowly but surely, Brooke opened up to Vanessa more. Slowly but surely, she let Vanessa help, let her try stapling files and spread the word about the family focus groups that Brooke was holding. Slowly but surely, Brooke’s conversation about how Vanessa was doing became less business-like and less casual, and more like Brooke was actually trying to absorb and learn what occupational therapy was like, how it felt to be Vanessa doing it. Slowly but surely, Brooke was opening up a little more, dropping information and feelings bit by bit.
Brooke was from Toronto, and she missed her family dearly, a fact that she showed even more than she said in how she spoke about them with a soft fondness that most people didn’t know she had. She had grown up very religious, but didn’t like describing herself as Christian any more (when Vanessa asked why, an uncomfortable look passed over Brooke’s face, and Vanessa had enough sense not to press the issue). She described herself as a lover-not-a-fighter, but had a more fierce temper than she let on, a passionate fire that he came out in rants and raves exclusively for Vanessa’s ears behind closed doors. She loved cats and had two of her own, and thought that Vanessa should come over some time to meet them.
The invitation stuck in Vanessa’s mind as she walked into the unit on February 14th, finally coming around to the idea that maybe, just maybe, Brooke felt the same way as she did.
Vanessa was so caught up thinking about the ways she could work Brooke’s cats into a conversation, how she could wriggle her way into confirming that Brooke’s invitation was real and that it meant what she hoped it did, that she hardly noticed the commotion in the allied health office.
“Put it on her desk.”
“Where on her desk? I can’t just–”
“Bird, yes you can! Just put it–dude, don’t put it face down, she needs to be able to read it!”
“Whatever, can you just hurry? She’ll be here– Heyyyy, Vanessa!” Ariel perked up when she saw Vanessa standing in the doorway, arms folded and eyebrow raised.
“What are you two clowns doing at my desk?” Vanessa looked Yvie and Ariel over with suspicion, the two of them looking like a pair of deer in headlights as they looked from each other to Vanessa’s desk to a piece of flashy red construction paper in Yvie’s hands.
Flashy red construction paper?
“Is that a Valentine?” Vanessa’s suspicion melted into pleasant surprise at the fact that her friends would take the time to make something for her, put so much thought in it as to fuss over where to leave it for her to find.
“Oh, yeah!” Yvie nodded seriously, “Brooke made it. She had a meeting, so she wanted us to leave it on your desk. She said that she’ll see you at lunch!”
Vanessa’s own heart stopped as Yvie pushed the handcut red heart into her hands, brushing past her with Ariel following closely behind, muttering some excuse about an SLP-PT joint session. Never mind the fact that speech and physiotherapy joint sessions rarely occurred, that those two were clearly up to something–she was holding a Valentine, a handmade Valentine, from Brooke Lynn Hytes. She traced the jagged, wobbling edges of the card as she flipped it over and brought it closer to her face to read.
Roses are red, violets are blue, tonight if you’re free, can I go out with you?
Vanessa snorted. It was a cheesy attempt at flirtation if ever she saw one, but knowing Brooke, she had no trouble imagining the blonde sitting at her desk deciding to go with an ironic rhyme after fretting over what to say for a good fifteen minutes. It wasn’t important, anyway–what mattered was, Brooke had written it, she had given it to Vanessa, she had asked her out. Brooke had asked her out.
When her heart started beating again, it was soaring, pounding hard in Vanessa’s chest as she gave the Valentine a quick little kiss and put it down on her desk.
She was so busy thinking about what she would say to Brooke, what activity she would suggest, heck, what she would wear , that she hardly noticed the knock at the office door.
“Brooke!” Vanessa gave a little jump when she turned around, only to come face to face with the blushing, grinning woman. “You’re not in–”
“I couldn’t wait.” Brooke shook her head, her blush deepening. “I had to come see you to say–”
“Thank you.” Vanessa blurted out. Brooke looked a little surprised for a second, then nodded.
“So I guess you picked up on everything?” Brooke laughed nervously, and Vanessa nodded, laughing too.
“Were you serious, though? Like no jokes?”
“Of course!” Brooke protested, “And I really want to go out tonight.”
Vanessa felt like screaming. She felt like jumping up and down, like grabbing Brooke and kissing her right then and there.
Instead, she smiled.
“How about right after work? You can make an exception for once. I know a great place we can go for dinner.”
“Yeah!” Brooke nodded enthusiastically before realising how eagerly she had answered, covering her embarrassment in a cough and dropping her voice as she repeated, “Yeah. I’d like that.”
“I’d like that too.” Vanessa smiled warmly. “See you at five?”
Brooke nodded. “See you at five.”
Around the corner, Nina reached over and punched Silky in the arm.
“Told you it would work.”
Silky rolled her eyes, but said nothing as the other women started giggling and whispering among themselves, craning their necks and stumbling over each other as they fought to see the scene unfolding in front of them.
“What did you even write in their cards?” Mercedes asked. “I saw Vanessa’s, but I didn’t see Brooke’s.”
“Oh, that one was easy.” Nina laughed. She took on Vanessa’s characteristically raspy voice and recited, “ You make my heart pop an’ lock. Can I take you out tonight?”
It was all anybody could do not to start howling with laughter.
Then Brooke and Vanessa came out of the doorway of the allied health office and started walking down the hallway, their hands interlocked and eyes downcast shyly, and everyone scattered, squealing excitedly about what geniuses they were.

Welfare Food Challenge: Pre-challenge Post
January 28, 2019
Hello, welcome to my Tumblr! My name is Ashley and this is my pre-challenge blog posting. This week I have chosen to “challenge” myself in participating in the annual Welfare Food Challenge as part of my INTD370 course at Red Deer College. The Welfare Food Challenge consists of purchasing 21 dollars worth of grocery items to last you for an entire week (7 days). The reasoning behind this dollar amount is that it highlights the inadequacy of welfare rates in British Colombia and it is the typical amount of money left aside for weekly grocery costs for these individuals. It is expected of the participants of the challenge to strictly eat only what fits within their $21.00 grocery budget. Rules for this challenge include no use of food banks or accessing free meals supplied by charities and family or friends; resisting from eating any food you already have or previously grown. Throughout this challenge, I will be posting a daily blog post depicting my meal creations, thoughts and feelings. The purpose of this challenge is to “raise public awareness about the poverty of people on welfare and the need for change” (Gerlings, 2017).
Since this Welfare Challenge is based within BC, out of my own curiosity I wanted to determine what the equivalent was in Alberta. According to Stadelmann-Elder, (n.d), in 2018 the total welfare income for a “single employable adult” in Alberta, was $8,106.00. That broken-down further leaves a total of $675.50 for monthly expenses. In order to gather my calculations, I will build a hypothetical scenario based on my regular monthly expenses. Each month I pay $362.50 for rent, and my utilities generally range from $80-120.00 depending on the time of year. My cellphone bill accounts for $65.00 of my monthly expenses, while my wifi split between myself and 4 roommates costs $30.00/month. I am fortunate enough to have 4 other roommates which make my monthly expenses significantly less. All together these expenses add up to (362.50 + 120 + 65 + 30) 577.50, during the colder months. My rent alone accounts for 54% of my monthly costs with that amount of income ($8,106.00/year). Another expense that would be essential for an Albertan to have during our long winter season is a means of transportation. A bus pass for one month in Red Deer costs $72.50, finally leaving us with $25.50 a month for groceries and any other unexpected expenses. This is completely earth-shattering. $25.50 a month to spend on groceries is completely not sustainable. This, of course, does not include any medical expenses, clothing, etc. Although, yes Canada does have universal healthcare being unemployed without private benefits may place you to be at risk of paying full price for many prescriptions, physiotherapy, and any other medical services. I know that some of my calculations may be off, and there are definitely cheaper phone and wifi plans, but this is still not a sustainable amount of income for any individual to live off.
This challenge has already been quite an eye-opening experience and I know there will be more experiences to come. I am quite excited to be able to really put myself into somebody else’s shoes and experience what my dietary palate would consist of being on welfare.
In order to begin the challenge, I first researched an array of online grocery-store websites in order to create a tentative plan. Although navigation of these sites was quite confusing I managed to select a few that worked for me and all stores were within a good radius of my residence. To make this challenge more realistic, I ended up deciding to shop at only one grocery store. I decided to do this because as an individual on welfare, most likely wouldn’t either have the means of transportation to shop at several grocery stores across Red Deer or might not have the time to wait for bus transportation. Also, it just happens that Walmart is the closest grocery store to me, and would only take about a 10-minute walk.
The following are the items I was able to come up with for this week:
1 loaf of white bread
1 dozen large eggs
1 jar of peanut butter
1 900g bag of basmati rice
5 banana’s
1 yellow bell pepper
1 red bell pepper
2 boxes of kraft dinner
1 dozen great value original weiners
Tumblr media
I was able to walk away from Walmart spending $19.96, leaving me with $1 to spare. In the following blog post, I plan to explain my shopping experience in more detail. As this post was quite a lengthy one I would like to end my pre-challenge discussion here. Thank you for reading along and wish me luck!
xoxo
Ashley

*Disclaimer* I purchased all of my items from Walmart on January 27th, but that evening fell quite ill so I decided to post-pone my blog posting for one day giving me some time to recover before diving in.
