Art Studio 1 Lecture and 24th Biennale Gallery visit (Chau Chak Wing Museum) (22.3.24)
Lecture: Artist-run Spaces (by Alex Gawronski)
Artist-run Spaces (or ARIs - Artist-run Initiatives) are:
Spaces directed and organised by artists (collectives, studios, shows/exhibitions, festivals, workshops, etc.).
Dedicated to showcasing experimental contemporary art.
Usually running on a 'not-for-profit' basis (although art may occasionally be sold).
An international phenomenon (found everywhere)
Below are some examples (Australia):
Firstdraft (Sydney, Australia)
107 Projects (Sydney, Australia)
Airspace Projects (Sydney, Australia)
Gertrude (Melbourne, Australia)
Blindside (Melbourne, Australia)
Outer Space (Brisbane, Australia)
Sawtooth ARI (Launceston, Australia)
FeltSpace (Adelaide, Australia)
Watch This Space Gallery (Alice Springs, Australia)
Below are some examples (international):
Studio 1.1. (London, England) and its other galleries: Studio 1.2. (Haarlem, Netherlands), Studio 1.3. (Poços de Caldas, Brazil) and Studio 1.4. (Susak, Croatia)
PrintSpace (Brooklyn, US)
Transmission Gallery (Glasgow, Scotland)
VideoArt Center Tokyo (Tokyo, Japan)
EST Art Foundation (Leiden, Netherlands)
M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (Singapore)
OpenArt (Örebro, Sweden)
SPAO Photographic Arts Centre (Ottawa, Canada)
Mothermother (Auckland, New Zealand)
Artist-run Spaces run on different models in funding and exhibitions.
Funding:
Government funded (ie. The Australia Council etc. Other State funding bodies).
Self-funding as a co-op (members of the directorship pool their own financial resources to pay for gallery rent and exhibition costs).
Exhibitor funded (gallery is paid for on a not-for-profit basis, by a rental fee paid by exhibiting artists.
Auctions and Fundraisers organized by ARI directors. A combination of the above.
Exhibition models:
Typically Government funded Als must, as a part of their agreement, accept outside proposals. That means the gallery directorship collectively decide which proposals they want to exhibit.
Self-funded co-ops can choose to accept proposals, but the onus will be determined by the co-operative.
Exhibitor-funded ARI models may accept proposals or may curate 'in-house' (ie. The directorship) actively curate the exhibition program without accepting proposals. Some of these are 'spaces for hire. That means they accept outside proposals for the primary purpose of covering the venue rent. They are often expensive and have less credibility within the art world (ALTHOUGH if you can afford it, they can be useful places to experiment if you're starting out).
There are many benefits to founding, directing or being involved in an Artist-run Space - including but not limited to:
Greater creative freedom in both the works you like to exhibit and the artists you'd like to work with
Greater freedom from limitations within institutional/commercial galleries
While another means of income may be needed, you don't have to deal with the pressure of selling your work
Collaboration opportunities, which can help you to form personal and professional connections
Gallery visit: 24th Sydney Biennale (Chau Chak Wing)
Citra Sasmita's Timur Merah Project X: Bedtime Story (2023, acrylic on traditional Kamasan canvas and oak dowels) and Timur Merah Project IV: Tales of Nowhere (2020, acrylic on traditional Kamasan canvas and oak dowels)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Description: "Citra Sasmita began researching patriarchal roots of modern Bali by looking to the literary and artistic canon of Indonesia, which broadly narrates male heroism and depicts women as romantic decorations. Through her Timur Merah Project, Sasmita creates counter-narratives that depict women as powerful and resistant actors who push back against a male gaze informed by colonial ideology. Following the fall of the last Balinese kingdom in 1908, the Dutch administration introduced the policy of Baliseering. A strategy of cultural diplomacy intended to establish an 'authentic' Bali, the policy obliged the Balinese community to carry out their cultural practices under Dutch supervision. Javanese nationalists argued that the policy kept Bali as a living museum' that appealed to colonial aesthetics of the noble and exotic while obliterating any Balinese self-determination. Balinese women, who for centuries were trafficked by the Dutch as particularly beautiful slaves, were often depicted in naturalistic portraits by colonial painters. In Timur Merah Project X: Bedtime Story and Timur Merah Project IV: Tales of Nowhere, Sasmita uses traditional Kamasan painting to reclaim the female figure as an active de-colonial agent challenging the exotic aesthetic heritage of Baliseering."
Cho Ka Fai's Exodus (2024, short film (18 mins 52 secs))
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Description: "Gathered around the campfire one hot Javanese night in the 1930s, a contingent of Dutch soldiers drunkenly sang and danced while a group of Indonesian farmers watched from afar, mimicking the men's strange, rhythmic movements. And so, Dolalak was born. Something of a cultural constellation, Dolalak performers cosplay in Dutch military regalia for trance-like performances of traditional Javanese dance, melodic Islamic poems and songs of ancestral spirits. Popular among young Indonesian TikTok influencers who dance Dolalak to the tunes of Indonesian pop music (Dangdut Koplo), the ritual sits within a deeply layered history. The same rich source resulted in an Indonesian band being hailed as the greatest live act in mid-century Europe some 20 years after the development of Dolalak. Following the Dutch failure to re-invade Indonesia after the Second World War, a number of Dutch-speaking Indonesian musicians, primarily from the Maluku Islands, were exiled to the Netherlands. In the same way that Dolalak rose from a colonial clash of cultures, Indo-Rock emerged in the 1950s/1960s when these musicians began to meld Western, Indonesian and Kroncong music, a specific genre in Indonesia played on Portuguese-introduced instruments. This fusion gave rise to leading bands like the Tielman Brothers, who reached stardom as icons of Dutch and West German rock 'n' roll. In Exodus, the Dewi Arum Girls (TikTok stars) dance Dolalak to a remix of the Tielman Brothers, meditating on the colonial resonances that linger. They dance like spirits, in the reverberations of Dolalak, Indo-Rock and contemporary digital culture."
Diane Burns' Alphabet City Serenade (1988, short film (1 min 57 secs))
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Description: "Chemehuevi and Anishinaabe poet Diane Burns walks the streets of New York's Lower East Side (Loisaida colloquially) reciting her poem Alphabet City Serenade in this powerful footage. An indictment of the gentrification of Loisaida and the treatment of First Nations Americans, Alphabet City Serenade paints the cracked windows and littered streets of Loisaida with a vivid and loving brush. The serenade also threads Burns into the fabric of the cityscape, with its crumbling tenements and narrow stretches of blue sky. A prolific personality and artist, Burns read her work at Bowery Poetry Club, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church as well as joining the likes of writers Allen Ginsberg, Joy Harjo, and Pedro Pietri in Nicaragua for the Ruben Dario Poetry Festival. Yet by the late 1980s, Loisaida, a counter-culture hub for creative, immigrant, and queer circles, was at risk of losing itself to rising rents, drugs, and the HIV epidemic. Before long, the community which had sustained Burns would dissipate, coming together again in 2006 on the event of her death. Over a career defined by an immutable spirit, Alphabet City Serenade captures the writer's sardonic, yet penetrating, insight..."
Mangala Bai Maravi's Baiga Godna Indian Tribe (2024, ink on paper)
Tumblr media
Description: "The women of the Baiga community in central India (primarily in the state of Madhya Pradesh) begin receiving tattoos from as young as age nine, starting with their forehead before covering their back, legs and chest. The designs, known as Godna, are a record of life and culture, and are known to hold healing properties when applied correctly. Among some of the earliest communities in South Asia, in recent times the Baiga people have been displaced by deforestation and government policy. In turn, the tradition of Godna is fading because (unlike jewellery or written records) the history that is encapsulated in these tattoos disappears with those who wear them. Mangala Bai Maravi, one of the few remaining Badnin (women tattoo artists) in her community, has committed her life to preserving and sharing this tradition. Documenting the symbols and stories of her people, across not only bodies but also canvas and paper, Maravi's practice can be understood as an act of cultural preservation and healing."

Artwork Printing Melbourne | Bravo Print
Artwork Printing Melbourne offers the latest giclee fine art printing technology. This process ensures that brush strokes and pencil renderings are delivered with perfect clarity.
James Eagle looks just how you’d expect an indie Melbourne artist to look: relaxed, friendly and cool in a totally accidental way. His screen-printing business is a side hustle that he’s slowly dragging back into the mainstream.
Bravo Print
The intricate and delicate work of Bravo Print needs to be seen to be believed. He uses a watercolour palette that’s almost translucent, with delicate strokes and pencil renderings that capture the essence of each animal perfectly.
He’s also a writer and has been published in Meanjin and Overland Literary Journal. He has a Research Masters in Creative Art and his thesis examined children’s art production, narrative and play.
Minna Leunig is an Australian artist who creates monochromatic scenes of animal life. Her limited colour palettes take viewers into the primal world of animals, with each species displaying their unique personalities and charisma. Leunig’s limited-colour landscapes are guaranteed to add a touch of whimsy and sophistication to any home.
Bravo Print
Bravo Print is a Kaanju, Kuku Ya’u, and Girramay woman from Far North Queensland who has always known she wanted to be an artist. From drawing on walls as a toddler to practising techniques passed down by her family, she has developed her own unique style of art. Emma’s work pays homage to her culture and heritage in bright and vibrant colours.
She is also a self-run businesswoman with her own art store called Mulganai. Her ally-friendly colouring book features 45 rad artworks that celebrate Indigenous Australia and the places she grew up in.
Another favourite is the Melbourne-based artist Mable Tan who creates surface design and illustrations that are whimsical, fun, and joyful. Her beautiful designs will add a splash of colour to any room in your home.
In the heart of inner-city Fitzroy is Australian Print Workshop, an award-winning centre of excellence for traditional printmaking and multidisciplinary studios. The refurbished building is a marvel of modern technology, and the team is able to offer print services that are at the forefront of international best practice.
They are a short taxi ride from the city and can be easily reached on the tram line that stops metres away. The team can also provide consultation and training for groups and individuals wanting to get started in printmaking.
Bravo Print
As a print studio, Creffield specialise in giclee printing – using high-resolution professional inkjet printers to ensure brush strokes, pencil renderings and colours are reproduced crystal-clear. They’re the go-to Melbourne printing company for artists who require perfection in their work and want to be sure that their prints are a true representation of the original idea they had in mind.
Sydney-based husband and wife duo The Adventures of produce a bold and colourful selection of greeting card and art prints that would brighten up any blank wall. Their slogan prints are perfect for daily motivation while their abstract, geometric and cut-out compositions are a bit like the work of a modern day Matisse.
If you’re looking for a more food-themed addition to your home, check out Melbourne artist Alice Oehr’s scrummy-looking illustrations. Hang one of her tomato or orange prints in your kitchen for a visual Vitamin C boost, or frame a strawberry print to remind you to pick some up from the market. Her artwork is also a great way to decorate your space without breaking the bank.
Bravo Print
When you want perfection for your artworks and photographs, Bravo Print is the place to go. Their giclee printing services are designed to capture brush strokes, pencil renderings and colours with a clarity that is often not possible with consumer-grade printers. Task 1: Concept Mind Maps
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In pairs we produced a mind map of each others concept, for our final project, planning and considering how we can explore the following factors:
Research
Experimentation
Sampling
Development
Production
Personal Reflection/ Evaluation
Project/ Time Management
We was asked to write down our narrative on a piece of paper and swap with our partner so we had each others narrative. We then wrote down our ideas that came to mind related to their narrative, in order to help them with new ideas they may not have thought of or knew about. I really enjoyed this task as it helped me learn new facts about the petite world and I was able to complete lots of research. I always loved hearing about my peers narratives and their stories as to why they are focusing on a certain topic.
My completed research from this task:
Petite models -
After researching about types of work available for petite models I found out that other than Moss, most petite models do commercial and catalogue work. Models who work in fashion generally work with high street brands specialising in petite clothing. It is very rare for a petite model to find high-fashion work on the catwalk or for designer labels. This is something that I find unfair as your height should not matter. However, petite models are not restricted when finding work. This is due to an increase in brands catering for men and women with smaller frames and shorter legs, petite models are now employed to keep up with this fashion industry demand.
Successful petite models -
Models who have refused to obey the stereotypical image associated with top designers, catwalks and campaigns are creating a path for petite models. These inspiring successful models have completely ignored the height restriction demonstrating that a smaller stature is required in the fashion industry. “Successful petite models are making an impact in a tall girls stomping ground, ignoring the confinements set upon them.”
Twiggy -
A british icon in the sixties and only 5″4. She revolutionised the stereotypical look of the era, starting a new breed of supermodels. Her height is rarely mentioned due to her confident persona that demands attention. She is still the shortest model with such a supermodel status.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beautiful dreams - Twiggy records her first single
Tumblr media
Anja Konstantinova -
Russian-Australian model, her impressive range of work includes, Vogue, Marie Claire, Urban Outfitters and French Connection. At 5″4 her height is not an issue with each shot demanding attention with her striking features, blonde hairs and natural posing instincts. The successful model discovered in a melbourne hair salon has received lots of rejection in her career, but she continues to break boundaries in a predominantly tall industry.
She explains: “People in Australia don’t accept shorter girls because they are a bit harder to work with, you have to photograph them in a certain way.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How to make the most of your petite frame -
Tumblr media
Don’t draw attention to your shorter height when interacting with clients and via body language. You will have to work extra hard to get noticed, which means standing tall and learning to highlight your height in photos. Never be caught slouching and be sure to work on poses that lengthen your lines. Good posture and strong stature goes a long way when presenting yourself to an agency meeting and photoshoot.
Petite models who changed the fashion industry -
Lily-Rose Depp
Lily-Rose made her runway debut with chanel in 2016. She is just 5″3, but that did not stop her from becoming the muse of fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld.
Tumblr media
Amina Blu
This German/ Pakistani beauty is 5″1 and no stranger to New York Fashion Week. Amina has walked for Kanye West more than 5 times. With her unforgettable looks and signature looks, Amina will keep making headlines.

The ‘Size 0′ movement
Sizes range from 0-2 which is extra small to 14-16 which is larger. Smaller sizes are usually petites, and larger sizes usually found in womens or plus size departments.
The size-zero ban is proof fashion industry on finally listening to customers. The use of size zero models has been a fashion industry scandal for many years. France’s top fashion house have committed to stop underage and size zero models from featuring in catwalk shows and advertising campaigns. Owners of brands such as Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton say they want to persuade others in the industry to follow suit. The industry has long been accused of promoting unhealthy body images of women and ignoring well-documented health problems experienced by models. In 2017, the French government voted through a law requiring models must have a medical certificate confirming they were not dangerously underweight.
“No model under 16 years will be recruited to take part in fashion shows or photographic sessions representing adults.” Models between 16-18 years will no longer be allowed to work between 11pm and 6am and must be accompanied by a parent or chaperone if required to stay away from home.
“The wellbeing of our models is a fundamental subject” the statement from LVMH read.

Mallory Schlossberg - “I’m part of a huge demographic that retailers largely ignore - here’s why it’s so frustrating”
When reading this article I very much related myself to it, she mentions being reminded of her height near enough everyday, she is 4″11 like me. “There are only a few times when I'm reminded how short I am: when I'm riding the subway and someone pushes right into me because I'm not in his peripheral vision, when I can't reach my kitchen cabinets and hop onto the counter, and when I'm shopping.”
When she was in high school and college she frequently shopped in the kids section. She mentioned it being impressive to see the selection that’s available for wealthy, stylish kids these days. She is able to wear a lot of designer apparel that are much cheaper than adult prices as kids clothes takes less fabric to make. However, it comes to a point in an adult woman's life where you do not want to shop in kids section anymore, she wanted to wear apparel for women because she is a woman. Adult size small dresses zip up just fine, but they hug in all the wrong places and drag on the ground or are longer fit on her than they’re supposed to be.
“It's frustrating. How do you shop for clothes and not look like a child in children's clothing — or a child playing dress up in her mother's closet?”
There are retailers that do cater to petite women although the ranges are very limited.
“Walk into Ann Taylor, Loft (where I buy my jeans), J. Crew, Banana Republic, or a department store, and you'll see selections of petite clothing, often relegated to a small corner with an odd amalgam of apparel, as though the merchandise team is wondering, "who is this petite woman? Is she a mother? Is she frumpy? Is she a decaying 90-year-old? Is she youthful and feisty? Is she too young to show off her curves? Is she a virgin?" The answer  — from a petite woman — is that she is none of the above, and she is all of the above. The petite woman is just like the regular-sized customer...only shorter.”
Retailers seem very confused with how to deal with short women. Topshop and Anthropologie are starting to recognise that short women like to look fashionable too, but the lack of options and concern for petite shoppers is noticeable. The reason as to why there are fewer petite options and not all stores offer apparel for smaller-framed women is because it requires a different design pattern.
As blogger TanyaTheAnonymousModel wrote on Jezebel:
"For a dress to look the same on a petite woman, a standard size woman and a plus woman — for the hem to hit at the same place on each woman's leg, for the waist to sit at the appropriate height, for the neckline to flatter but not overexpose, for the pockets to be useful, easily reached, and neither too small nor too big — requires, in effect, three totally different paper patterns, each with a separate, and expensive, development process."
The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City offers a continuing education course in image consulting, combining petite and plus size bodies together as "special size" customers — noting that they make up about a tremendous amount of the population. The course description reads as follows:
"Over 70 million U.S. women fall into the special size category, that 50 % of the population is actually under 5'4", and 65 million women are considered plus size. Designers, patternmakers, retailers, stylists, and image consultants, and wardrobe technicians can all benefit from this in-depth workshop that demystifies the special size business potential. Learn the facts behind the figures with practical information for fulfilling the expectations of the special size customer with proper fit, fashion, and service. Highly recommended for anyone looking to increase sales and services. Interact with our two industry experts as they each tackle the dilemmas facing both the petite and plus-size customer and give concrete directions for satisfying their shopping needs and fashion passions."
An undergraduate course "sketching for fashion designers" mentions that "Large, half-size, petite, and junior-size figures are featured to study proportions used in the industry". Showing petites aren't entirely ignored in design school, they just aren't given equal attention. They're generally not on runways; runways are about aspiration, and who aspires to be 5'2''?
“Petite women have not been celebrated loudly as equals. They have not been given body-positive model icons to speak on their behalf, although we do have Kelly Ripa, Snooki, and Kim Kardashian in our corner. There has not been a call to action. There hasn't been any real vocal repugnance, but instead, there's been a silence and a void, which is too telling. Petite women have been pushed aside, not permitted to speak — much like the children for which many try not to be mistaken.”

This is where a talent agency in Melbourne can play a crucial role in shaping the career of an aspiring model and helping them transition into an industry star.
In this blog, we delve into the indispensable role of talent agencies, offering aspiring models a roadmap to success through professional development, networking, legal support, and brand management.

The Role of a Talent Agency
A talent agency serves as a bridge between aspiring models and industry opportunities. These agencies have established relationships with various brands, designers, photographers, and casting directors, making it easier for models to access lucrative gigs and projects.
By leveraging their connections and industry knowledge, talent agencies can open doors for aspiring models and provide them with the exposure they need to thrive in the competitive world of modelling.
Professional Development and Training
One of the key benefits of partnering with a talent agency Melbourne is access to professional development and training programs. These agencies often have industry experts and mentors who can provide valuable guidance on everything from perfecting your runway walk to building your personal brand.
Through workshops, seminars, and one-on-one coaching sessions, aspiring models can hone their skills and enhance their marketability in the industry.
Networking Opportunities
Networking is essential in the modelling industry, and a talent agency can offer aspiring models access to a wide network of industry professionals. By attending events, fashion shows, and casting calls organised by the agency, models can connect with key players in the industry and build relationships that can lead to exciting career opportunities.
Networking also allows models to learn from seasoned professionals and gain insights into the ever-evolving world of fashion.
Industry Insights and Trends

With legal experts on hand, models can focus on their craft while the agency handles the administrative and legal aspects of their career.
Public Relations and Brand Management
Building a strong personal brand is essential for models looking to establish a lasting presence in the industry. Talent agencies often offer public relations and brand management services to help models craft their image, create a compelling portfolio, and engage with their audience effectively.
