Line Dance For Birds
Tumblr media
Caribbean Flamingos lining up for a dance with others egging them on in the former Jurong Bird Park. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
ISO had been pushed up to 400 for this shot and details expectedly took a hit. It was a 1/2-inch sensor kit. The shutter speed for this was already just 1/125 second. And it would’ve been slower if this had been shot at base ISO and would’ve otherwise ended up with motion blur.

Examples of same-sex pairs successfully raising young have been documented in at least 20 species, and in a few cases, homosexual couples actually appear to have an advantage over heterosexual ones.¹³
13. In some bird species in which same-sex pairs are unable to obtain fertile eggs on their own (or in which homosexual parenting has yet to be observed in the wild), parenting skills have been demonstrated by supplying homosexual pairs with "foster" eggs or young in captivity. Same-sex pairs of Flamingos, White Storks, Black-headed Gulls, Steller's Sea Eagles, Barn Owls, and Gentoo Penguins, for example, have all successfully hatched such eggs and/or raised foster chicks.

Flamingos are a very hardy sort of creature, meaning they will survive in environments where no other life is found (salt water lake with a pH value of 9.5). Suffice to say these birds can withstand quite a lot.
So that breakup must have been bruuuuuuutal.
The American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is in the Náttúruval deck, please checkout the project https://natturuval.is/

American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber), family Phoenicopteridae (flamingos)
Overall much brighter in color than the closely related greater flamingo, with most of its plumage being pink in color.
Their nests, built out of mud, contain only a single egg. Both parents are involved in constructing the nest, and take turns incubating the egg.

Although the standard social unit in Flamingos is the breeding monogamous pair, a number of alternative heterosexual pairing and family arrangements occur.

Flamingo parents (of either sex) typically feed their chicks a blood-red "milk" produced in their crops, and both males in homosexual couples feed their chicks with this crop milk.

This was captured with the exposure biased 2/3 stop darker to preserve highlights and then shadows were darkened a little in post.

However, other Flamingos in homosexual pairs were previously members of a heterosexual pair (and vice versa). Some males in same-sex pairs also occasionally attempt to mount other birds, including females. These are both examples of different types of bisexuality (sequential and simultaneous).
