the entire interview.
Just for correctness sake. Two of her siblings also survived.
And something I learned just now: Apparently Sinti and Roma call the murder of their people Porajmos.

Hii!!!! This is my Romani oc:) Anaïs!!! I wanted to get some constructive critism abt her. (Take note that this is in a pirate setting) she’s a 17 yr old girl!! She likes singing and dancing and is very close with her mother:) she is an only child and her family owns a tavern called “Sirens Feast”. She and her mom were kidnapped by pirates and she saved her and her moms life by singing. She’s based off an actual romani woman, Philomena Franz.
She then gets saved by another one of my ocs whos a scottish pirate but thats a story for another time i just wanna focus on Anaïs

PHILOMENA FRANZ // AUSCHWITZ SURVIVOR
“She was a Sinti Roma who survived Auschwitz and other concentration and extermination camps during World War II. She is also the first Roma storyteller to write and publish a memoir about the Roma Holocaust as a personal testimony of denunciation and a vindication of the rights of the victims. This memoir was published in German at a key moment for Sinti activism, breaking the wall of silence surrounding the survivors and responding to the racism still present decades after the official end of Nazism. The narrative is also an account of the daily life of many German Sinti families before Hitler came to power, giving us a detailed glimpse into a fragment of European history erased from official annals and archives.”

Philomena Franz, born in Biberach, Germany in 1922, was the first Romani woman to record in writing her experiences in the concentration camps under the Third Reich. As a young girl growing up in a Sinti family of musicians and performers with long-established roots in Germany, Franz sang and danced as a member of her family’s company. She fondly remembers the highlights of this period such as performing at the Lido in Paris and the Winter Gardens in Berlin.
This life of creativity and freedom ended in the late 1930s when her family’s passports and later their instruments were confiscated, and in 1943 Franz was deported to Auschwitz. After one failed attempt to escape from Ravensbrück, Franz succeeded in escaping from a camp near Wittenberge in 1945 and, with the help of a German farmer, managed to stay alive and hidden. After the war, she discovered that most of her family had been murdered in the camps. Aid was not readily available for Romani survivors, so Franz joined forces with other Sinti musicians to form a band, which toured the country and played for the liberating troops.
During this period, she met Oskar Franz, whom she married and with whom she had five children. In the years that followed, she suffered from severe depression, repeated nightmares and an ever-returning sense of being in captivity. At the same time, she struggled with the lack of official recognition of the victimisation of Sinti and Roma in the Holocaust and the lack of restitution.
When in the 1970s one of her sons was taunted at school for being a ‘Zigeuner’, Franz felt compelled to speak to the pupils and teachers there about the Holocaust. This was how she began relating her memories of the concentration camps and forming them into narratives.
In 1982 she collected her fairy-tales for children in a work entitled Zigeunermärchen [Gypsy tales], and in 1985 she recorded her memories of the life and the family she had lost in the Holocaust as well as her experience of imprisonment in Auschwitz in her autobiography, Zwischen Liebe und Hass – Ein Zigeunerleben. In 1995, she was honoured with the Cross of the Order of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 2001 she was named ‘Frau Europas 2001’ by the civil society network European Movement Germany. Almost a year ago, thanks to a scholarship from the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights, I started working on a research project entitled "From Esmeralda to Panna Cinka : Rewriting Romani Herstory". It was the beginning of a journey of self-discovery, as much as an academic project based on intensive reading, data collection, formal and informal semistructured open-ended interviews. What was supposed to be a short research article turned into a sprawling inquiry into Romani female identity, experience and solidarity, that I'm yet to conclude ! It allowed me to discover amazing role models, artists, scientists, writers, politicians and activists who have largely been erased in history books... Romani.Herstory aims to pay tribute to these unsung heroes that I wish I had known when I was a little girl, when the only Romani female figure available to me in popular culture was Esmeralda. Women like Papusza (1908-1987), Philomena Franz (1922- ), Panna Cinka (1711-1772), la Niña de los Peines (1890-1969), the Pankova sisters (1924-1991 & 1925 - ), Aranka Hegyi (1855-1906) or Ceija Stojka (1933-2013) and many more have made important contributions to literature, music, theatre, film, science and mathematics. These are the Romani women I now want to celebrate. Join me on this journey ! #RomaniHerstory
