Which artists inspire you right now?
oooo recently I've been more seriously diving into like.. vintage fantasy artists like frazetta, phillipe druillet, moebius.. that ilk! (I bought a book recently about them, it was a trash book, absolutely laughable as a piece of literature, never had a book that so strongly made me want to read This Book But Better before. But still it had a lot of wonderful illustrations and I actually feel the desire to Do Studies of the way these artists like.. used colour specifically as I try to nail in to what I really want my art to Be; or more accurately what I want to be able to Do with my Art)
But there's always the golden age of illustration folks like Kay Neilsen, John Bauer, bilibin, dulac.. and of course my modern fare like Hyde, Helen Mask, and Nemo (and many MANY others I don't have time to search out, nor would that be a helpful list sdjfhs there's a lot of artists on the internet.. and I'm not Great at keeping them All On Hand Always) but yeah, that's a little bit of the Right Now a little bit of the Always! I'm never sure if you can even See the influence of the things that inspire me in my art yet gdshasada as a lot of what my art Is came about from a very Technical place before I started really Exploring this kind of stuff, I can feel I need a great big Shift in how I do things again like I did waaaaay back in like 2011, but we'll see how it goes, change makes me nervous and changing your Art is Hard, especially when you can't 100% see the target.

Alain Pierre - Ă” Sidarta
"Ô Sidarta" was released in 1974 and directed by Swiss filmmaker Michel Jakar, documenting the process of comic artist Philippe Druillet, but it's the soundtrack we're obsessed with, a truly haunting set of avant electronics from "synthesist, sound designer and ethnological instrument enthusiast" Alain Pierre. Written for the 11-minute short on French illustrator Phillipe Druillet, , the score offered the only accompaniment to a suitably mid-7Os portrait of the artist sketching in the studio. Close- ups of dolls’ faces, shots of Druillet surveying a boisterous sea, and lingering gazes at his intricate illustrations, which range from the sinister to the tortured, are matched with ghostly chorales and wayward percussion that progresses from their tribal beginnings into a doomy piece of synth- assisted sci-fi hell. It’s perfect for the unsettling imagery that spews forth from Druillet’s pen.

Artist 10- Phillipe Druillet
Phillipe Druillet is a comic artist  and innovated French comic design and creation. His first books were inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and A.E. van Vogt; Druillet later went on to redesign the book covers of Lovecrafts books. He was nicknamed the "space architect" due to his backdrops being inspired by Art Nouveau,  Indian temples, and Gothic cathedrals. He has also worked with architecture, rock opera, painting, sculpture, and digital art as well as his career with illustration and cartoons.
His stories revolve around science-fiction stories. The underlying line art is incredibly intricate, including every brick on a building or piece of clothing on background characters, creating the illusion of wide angle shots within his artwork. The lines, though creating an elaborate scene, appear sketchy due to repetition in close proximity which also appears as shadows within the drawing. This effect is analogous with other comic artists but incredibly effective within Druillet's intricate artwork. His work relies on heavy shadow and single strong light sources within scenes, perhaps very dull lighting elsewhere within the image.
His use of colour is also incredibly effective. Though often block colour (or tones of colour blending within the same space), contrasting colours are used within the same image to highlight the characters in the foreground, maintaining the intricacies of his backgrounds whilst highlighting the characters within the scenes. His work began to include colour when Druillet began using airbrushes.
He is recognised in his field and is hailed as one of the creators of "Les Humanoïdes Associés" and has created his own series called "Lone Sloane" which is full of Lovecraftian monsters from space. The comics panels have no borders and are placed on full page illustrations so no space is wasted within the pages of his stories.

Who are these weirdos?
Had a bit of an epiphany while reading Lone Sloan by Phillipe Druillet. It’s an absolutely gorgeous psychedelic space adventure, and Druillet sucks at drawing anything that isn’t baroque warped architecture. I mean this with the utmost respect, he’s a hundred times the artist I’ll ever be, but he can barely draw faces. And I realized that it doesn’t matter. I’m not reading Lone Sloan for good faces, I’m reading it for cathedral spaceships.
And I think that this is something that is difficult for certain artists (like me) to realize. You can be technically proficient as hell and boring. If you want people to have interest in your work you have to provide something unique. Something exciting. It’s good to be technically proficient, but it’s not even the majority of what attracts people. It’s unfair, but that’s how it is. I think I have a good handle on the sort of appeal Aphelion has but honing in on it for these faster comics has been hard. But i’ve pinned down my concerns, and that means I can address them.

DANIEL DEFOSSE
Tumblr media
