The flowers of Etlingera elatior (Philippine waxflower, torch ginger) are surrounded by the towering foliage in the tropical glasshouse at Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK. This tropical plant spreads by seeds and rhizome growth and has the potential to form a dense thicket principally in moist habitats. The species is naturalised and invasive in China, Costa Rica and Hawaii.
