Ernest Edwin Evans - Hero of Leyte Gulf
Near 25,000 Native Americans served in the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII, most volunteering for the Army, of which the Dineh “Code Talker” unit was a dinstinct and honorable component of. However, of that 25,000, 1,910 men of various tribes served in Navy with honor and courage. Commander Ernst Evans was a sailor, perhaps the most unremembered naval hero of the Pacific Theatre.

Evans was born in Pawnee, Oklahoma on August 13th, 1908, of mixed Cherokee-Creek-white heritage, and after attending Central High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma, he enlisted in the Navy. After a year-long service he was appointed to Annapolis, graduating in 1931 as an Ensign. From there on he rose through the ranks, serving on the USS Roper as a Lieutenant Junior Grade, then on the USS Rathburne, Pensacola, Chaumont, and Black Hawk from 1933-41 as Lieutenant.
Evans was then assigned to a destroyer, the USS Alden, and was serving on her during the bombing of Pearl Harbor in the East Indies. He assumed command of the Alden on March 14, 1942, and participated in operations around Australia, New Guinea, and the Dutch East Indies until being called back to be given command of the newly minted USS Johnston in Seattle.Commander Evans assumed command of Johnston at her commissioning ceremony on October 27, 1943. He was later awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in action against a Japanese submarine on May 16, 1944.

He was in command of USS JOHNSTON on 25 October 1944 during the Battle of Samar, Philippine Islands, a component of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The Johnston was escorting six CVE ships along with the destroyers Hoel and Heermann and four other destroyer escorts, making up the task unit known as Taffy 3. This group, together with planes from task force Taffy 2 , ultimately faced a Japanese battlegroup consisting of several battleships, cruisers, and destroyers to abort its original mission to attack the landing beaches at Leyte, where Gen. Douglas MacArthur and his troops were, and retreat. When the Japanese fleet was first sighted, Cmndr. Evans did not hesitate, ordering his ship out of its current formation to ready for a torpedo offensive. It’s said that Evans told his crew "A large Japanese fleet has been contacted. They are fifteen miles away and headed in our direction. They are believed to have four battleships, eight cruisers, and a number of destroyers. This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can”, before turning around for another run at the Japanese fleet.

The USS Johnston sank on October 25, 1944, leaving 144 survivors, Evans was not one of them. He was 36 years old. Evans was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his contribution to the decisive victory won in Leyte Gulf and shared in the Presidential Unit Citation awarded his group for this action in which he gave his life. In 1955, destroyer escort the USS Evas was named in his honor. It was decommissioned in 1968, and no active ship has carried the name of Evans or Johnston since.
