I’m taking a break from Tumblr, perhaps until the end of the year. I feel like I might be following in the steps of @bondsmagii Who seemed to stop spending time on the site and spending more time reading. Since I finished 11 books in October, I seem to be on the same path. I’m writing more fiction now as well so I’m working on a story that is set in Philadelphia during the height of the crack epidemic about a neighborhood restaurant in the last weeks before it would be abandoned forever. This required me to do some research into what it was like in Philadelphia during the height of a crack epidemic and this article is really interesting.

Philadelphia's Synthetic Dye Legacy: History and Impact
I confess I never thought about how science created most of the colors around me until I chanced upon Philadelphia’s Science History Institute’s Bold: Color from Test Tube to Textile. Here are some of the things I learned from this fascinating exhibit. When William Perkins was an 18-year-old college student in England in 1856, tried to synthesize quinine from coal tar. (At that time, quinine was…

my problem really deeply is how shallow a tolerance younger people have for old queer media. like yes, it's dated and some of the politics don't hold water anymore, but to ignore older media simply based on that is to loose EVERYTHING we have bc we don't have a lot. just because queer themes caught up more recently doesn't mean we should rehash everything to fit into a more "presentable" format that is only considered modern bc of the puritanical blacklash of the last several years and sanitization of queer themes.

If ever there was a picture that encapsulated who Pete Rose was on the field, its this one. Charlie Hustle!!! One of my favorites growing up!!!
Rest in Peace Hit King. Maybe now you'll get reinstated and have your right place among the immortals at Cooperstown.

i sincerely hope that one day an amazing and faithful adaptation of the secret history will be made. and by that i mean that i hope whoever adapts it for the screen understands the amount of comedy actually etched into the pages. i would really, really, really like to see these awful characters played so straight in their moral dubiousness that it becomes funny. i want an "it's always sunny in vermont" type situation. i need the ridiculousness of the ongoing search party in the background while frances and henry bicker like an old married couple about a donut. i need the abruptness of henry revealing that he killed his neighbor's pesky dog for an experiment on poisonous mushrooms. i need frances and henry confessing—at length!—of their collective murdering of bunny to a very confused and painfully naive richard, overlapping one another with no pause as the ashtray piles up higher and higher. i need the near-farcical nature of the funeral reception in bunny's family home, with these neurotic snobby idiots contrasted against the uppity obnoxious all-american crowd, looking for pills to cure the migraine of a couch-ridden henry while richard struggles more than usual to act normal around camilla, and charles goes off on a drunken joyride. i need the unfortunately unserious endeavor of both frances and richard trying to reach out to charles, who has driven himself so deep into alcoholism that when he opens the front door they are met with the ripe stench of him, and require fifteen minutes to catch charles' roommate (a cat from unknown origins), who takes a shit on richard's shoes.
