Jesse Kivel has been making indie rock music since the aughts, first in the hyper-literate band Princeton with his twin brother Matt and later in synth-dance-y Kisses. Now living in Maine and newly a dad, he recorded his best material yet in the second solo album, Life and Death at Party Rock. In her review at Dusted last month, Jennifer Kelly wrote, “Kivel has suddenly scratched below the surface, finding an unexpected, melancholy beauty in loosely collated daydreams. Life and Death at Party Rock haunts rather than pleases.” Here’s what Kivel has in his listening queue.
Bobby McFerrin — By The Sea
youtube
My friend Michael passed me this video years ago and I was just blown away by the talent, skill and concentration displayed in this performance. A lot of times we focus on the recorded version of a song, but in this case, Bobby makes a simple song transform into a technical feat of emotion and beauty.
Oasis — Live by The Sea (full concert)
youtube
Oasis was the band that changed everything for me. My brother and I would pretend to be Noel and Liam, snarling and playing Noel’s simple yet powerful solo's. We also snagged all of their live concert videos, including this one. Nothing beats Liam’s swagger in this moment and the energy and excitement this group could bring.
Alessi Brothers — Seabird (live)
youtube
This song was on a compilation or mixtape I received a while back. Gorgeous vibes and perfect to play in the early evenings. Also, keeping up with the brother/identical twin theme that has defined my life and creative output.
Linda McCartney — Seaside Woman
youtube
One of my wife Zinzi’s favorite songs, this tune has incredibly energy and feel. The lyrics are a touch problematic, and I truly can't be sure that Paul didn't write this one. He is basically singing through the entire thing, and it sounds like his vibe. Regardless, it is a lovely tune and I really like Linda’s solo record.
Beck — Guess I'm Doing Fine: Sea Change
Easily my favorite Beck record. It speaks to some of the natural textures and feelings I was trying to put on my new LP. This record reminds me of visiting a college in Atlanta. I slept over on campus and this record helped me sleep in a strange/unknown environment.
Don Gibson — Sea of Heartbreak
youtube
An iconic and classic tune, covered by everyone from Jonny Cash to Van Morrison. Gorgeous and simple, like many of those late 50’s/early 60’s tunes of yesteryear.
Phil Phillips & The Twilights — Sea of Love
youtube
I am 38 so most of my friends and peers know the Cat Power version of this. I have love for that cover as it exposed me to the original. I love the crisp and focused way the original is recorded. Eerie and slightly haunting, it is a beautiful tune.
Jesse Kivel Overgrown Ocean
youtube
I would be nothing if not a shameless self-promoter :) This song is about visualizing myself crashing down into Penobscot Bay on a Cape Air Cessna. I wrote the lyrics to this song on my first flight with Cape Air which was incredibly foggy and overwhelming. As we cut through the clouds, an overwhelming calm reached me, and the lyrics are a meditation on death and finding peace with it.
Dennis Wilson — Pacific Ocean Blues
youtube
Growing up in Southern California, all I can say is I can relate to Dennis and the blues that often can accompany living in the region. The relentless sun and lack of seasons can really do someone in. Dennis, to his credit, correctly points out over and over in this song that the Pacific Ocean is blue. I appreciate his clear-eyed perception here.
Wilco + Billy Bragg — The Secret of The Sea
youtube
Wilco and Billy Bragg both have loomed large in my early musical education. Separately with their early records and then this Woody Guthrie collaboration. My brother and I went to Tulsa to visit Guthrie's museum a few years ago. While the Dylan one was put together more tastefully, I just remember relating to Guthrie as all his notebooks had endless amounts of mundane lists. This captured my heart as this is essentially all I do with my notebooks as well.

Italy’s Neker Return With Bass-Heavy Beast ‘Slower’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Sometimes it's about the simple things in life. "I love my moustache and loud amps," says heavy music mastermind Nicola Amadori, "especially Orange ones!" This singer-songwriter from Pesaro, Italy founded NEKER as an outlet for just him and his bass back in 2013, but as time went along he couldn't deny the urge to hit the stage and get his music to the people in the most natural of ways. Next thing you know, Alessandro Eusebi (guitarist) and Daniele Alessi (drummer) joined the team and, after the recording of Neker's first album, 'Louder' (2017), they traveled about Europe playing concerts here and there for the better part of two years, eventually reaching as far as Canada in 2019.
As the pandemic loomed, Neker was already poised to record new music over the Lockdown and produced the sophomore album before us, titled simply, 'Slower' (2021). Louder, slower. I can get with that jam, yes sir.
He's a simple man with a simple plan, as Nicoli himself explains to Doomed & Stoned:
I’m a bassist and a singer looking for new sounds with a special fondness for '90s music. I’m a big Phil Anselmo’s fan but I grew up listening to many different genres from acid jazz to hardcore. When writing my riffs, I’m usually inspired by bands such as Down, Crowbar, Every Time I Die, Melvins, Mastodon, Doomriders, Type o Negative. I’ve no important messages to spread. I express my feelings or sing songs, at most. I do think people are fed up with messages, they just need to get lost in good music.
I suspect they'll find both here, as it's hard not to get wrapped up in the intensity of feeling embodied by songs such as "A Kind Of Pain," "Pretty Fucking Far From Okay," "The Birth of Pain," and "Deception of the Guardian," where the mood is dark, the riffage severe, the singing moving, and the sentiment is quite sincere and relatable.
As for the sonics, I could not wish for better. Nicola goes on to address the musicianship and recording process of this new spin:
Slower is the work I'm proudest of. I have spent a lifetime playing with bands of the widest variety, but this album represents all I have always wished for: a dark and rotten sound without sacrificing the groove. All has been studied in detail thanks to my musicians Ale and Dani, who excellently arranged a few drums and guitar tracks. When writing they also had very good ideas, without which the record wouldn't sound as it does. I intentionally worked a lot on the vocals. The atmosphere in the studio was perfect.
I recorded at Zeta Factory in Carpi and at Studio73 in Ravenna under the wise guidance of Riccardo Pasini, with whom I enjoyed every moment, from the drum sessions to the production, which I had the honour to carry out with him.
He concludes:
Slower is a dark and introspective album, even though there are a few songs whose texts are more straightforward and pissed off. Like the lyrics, music ranges from doom and melodic to fast-paced and louder.
I say we give Slower a road test right here and now. I think you'll find the sound powerful, the sentiment relatable, and the verve unstoppable. Wanna come along? Neker's Slower drops June 18th on Time To Kill Records (pre-order here, and you lucky Doomers and Stoners get to hear it all. Ready? Alright then, buckle in, 'cause here we go.
Give ear...

I have made 8 Song Journeys for the following artists/bands (* Jason suggested)
Alessi Brothers * Arcade Fire Bastille Bear's Den The Beatles Big Talk * The Bonzo Dog Band * Elbow Eskimo Joe Guster Harry Chapin Incubus * John Mayer Josh Groban Kesha * Manchester Orchestra The Moody Blues Phil Collins Passenger Pomplamoose * Rhett And Link Robbie Williams Roy Orbison * Scroobius Pip Silverchair * Travis Treble Charger * Vast Vertical Horizon The Wanted Weird Al Yusuf (Cat Stevens)
What is an 8 Song Journey? Well it's where you pick a starting artist/band and select the song with the highest number of plays (often top track but not always) and then you go to the fans also like section pick the first artist/band and pick their highest played track, then go to their fans also listen to section, etc and so on until you have 8 tracks. If an artist/band is suggested twice then skip until a new one.
Some of the journeys are pretty predictable. A few though? Are well interesting.

Qantas, Delta, Singapore Are Tops for Premium Economy Cabins
Twenty years after international airlines such as U.K.-based Virgin Atlantic and Taiwan’s EVA Air introduced the premium economy concept, the section between coach and business class still represents fewer than 4 percent of seats in the sky, according to a recent Travelport/Carlson Wagonlit study.
Meanwhile, U.S. carriers have been far more concerned with basic economy—“economy minus” to some—than its premium counterpart. But for fliers who want roomier seats, better meals, larger entertainment screens, and more personalized service without an extravagant price tag, the options are starting to grow.
In the last year, American Airlines Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc. both rolled out premium economy on international flights while United Airlines has started installing new “Premium Plus” seats aboard a handful of its long-haul jets. Like most premium economy tickets, they tend to cost two to three times as much as coach and half the price of business class.
Why the sudden uptick? Longer flight routes, such as Singapore Airlines Ltd.’s new flight from its namesake hub to Newark, are making comfort as important as affordability; for that 19-hour flight, the airline decided to nix coach service entirely, including only premium economy and business class seats.
“Our premium economy passengers are a mix of leisure travelers on special occasions and business travelers who appreciate the value,” says Phil Capps, head of customer experience at Australian airline Qantas Airways, another carrier noted for its long hauls. Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd.’s senior vice president of the Americas, Philippe Lacamp, agrees. He says these cabins are about making a “trade up” for small business entrepreneurs, not luring executives away from business class.
Wherever you fall on that spectrum, here is a ranking of cabins that most warrant the upgrade from coach, based on such factors as seat size, amenities, availability, and *price. Consider it your handbook to flight survival, both for the hectic holiday season and beyond.
*Fares cited in this story were the lowest available from January-March 2019.
1. Singapore Airlines
Though Singapore Airlines’ elegant first-class suites and spacious business class seats get much of the attention, the airline’s premium economy is an industry benchmark as well.
Why it’s better than coach: Aboard the airline’s A350s, A380s and some B777-300ERs, seats offer six inches of additional legroom, an impressive nine inches of recline, and such upscale touches as leather upholstery and extendable footrests. There’s also a service called “Book the Cook” that lets passengers pre-order meals designed by a coterie of celebrity chef partners, and noise-canceling headphones let you tune out while watching movies on a 13.30-inch HD touchscreen.
Price difference: On flagship routes, expect markups of 60 percent to 150 percent. That’s roughly $550 more between Singapore and San Francisco ($893 in coach and $1,448 in premium), or an additional $1400 between Singapore and London.
2. Delta
Along with new business-class suites with closing doors, Delta introduced a similarly souped-up Premium Select section last year. You can find it on A350s and select B777-200s and B757-200s.
Why it’s better than coach: Aboard the A350, having one fewer seat per row than economy allows for eight inches more legroom and seven inches of recline. You’ll also get an additional inch of entertainment screen space; adjustable footrests, legrests, and headrests; and several personal stowage spaces. Partnerships with LSTN (for headphones), TUMI (for amenity kits), and Alessi (for serve ware) also add a luxurious touch.
Price difference: Fares fluctuate dramatically, depending on the route. Tickets from Detroit to Shanghai started at $1,047 in economy and $2,103 in premium economy, while those from Atlanta to Seoul cost $1,648 in economy and $2,119 in premium economy.
3. Qantas
The Australian carrier’s latest and most comfortable premium economy seats, by industrial designer David Caon, debuted last year on the fleet’s B787 Dreamliners.
Why it’s better than coach: These cabins offer two to three additional inches of legroom, three of recline, and seven to eight of pitch when compared to the back of the plane. They have innovative calf rests engineered to offer better ergonomic support than Qantas’s previous premium economy seats; the new ones offer complimentary adjustable headrests fitted with specially designed pillows. Pull-out shelves for your phone or tablet are a nice extra, as are the dedicated check-in counters at the airport and the self-serve bar for mid-flight snacks, should you feel hungry after a multicourse meal.
Price difference: Every minute counts on flights that can last over 17 hours, so passengers might not mind paying nearly three times as much for a ticket from Los Angeles to Melbourne or Perth to London. (These routes have been running $2,534 and $3,085, respectively.)
4. Cathay Pacific
One of the best-designed premium economy cabins has rolled out on Cathay Pacific’s A350s, while its B777-300ERs are currently being updated with ergonomic leg rests and additional leg room.
Why it’s better than coach: Six-way adjustable headrests and padded, extendable leg rests mean you’ll always find a comfortable sleep position. These seats are also extra roomy, with dimensions of 20 inches wide and 40 inches of pitch. A small but delightful touch: Aisle-side armrests lower completely so passengers can swivel, rather than get up, to let their neighbors stroll out of the row. Welcome drinks, priority check-in, and generous baggage allowances are icing on the cake.
Price difference: Those additional touches can double the price of a round-trip ticket from San Francisco to Hong Kong ($1,273, vs. $665 in economy) and add even more to the cost of a flight from Hong Kong to Sydney ($1,414, vs. $560 in coach).
5. American Airlines
One year after introducing international premium economy, American’s seats can be found on the airline’s A330-200s, B777-300ERs, B787-9s, and some B777-200s.
Why it’s better than coach: Everything from check-in to security and boarding is expedited when you’re in premium—including retrieving checked luggage. In addition to three inches of additional width and seven inches more of pitch, you’ll get Casper pillows and blankets, small amenity kits, and meals designed by celebrity chefs such as James Beard Award-winner Maneet Chauhan.
Price difference: The upgrade won’t double your fare on major international routes, but it comes close: A round-trip from Dallas to Paris, for example, starts at $555 in economy and $990 in premium economy.
6. Air New Zealand
This antipodean airline has some of the roomiest premium economy seats in the sky, and more passengers will benefit as it expands its long-haul route network.
Why it’s better than coach: Air New Zealand Ltd. takes the top prize when it comes to seat size. All are 19.3 inches wide and have 41 to 42 inches of pitch and 9 inches of recline—plus a 5-inch armrest, so you won’t have to wrestle your seatmate for space. That should compensate for the small entertainment screens—a mere 11 inches wide—as should the Kiwi-sourced wines served with dinner.
Price difference: Premium economy fares on the airline’s new flights from Auckland to Chicago start at $3,669, while economy fares cost $1,352. Those from Los Angeles to Auckland start at $2,619 in premium economy and $899 in coach.
7. Virgin Atlantic
This trendsetting airline was one of the first to introduce a premium economy cabin—way back in 1992, when it was called Mid Class. These days, it feels just as fresh.
Why it’s better than coach: Virgin’s leather-covered premium seats are among the widest in their class, at 21 inches. (As with Air New Zealand, though, the entertainment screens are among the smallest, at 11 inches wide.) In service upgrades, expect multi-dish meals served on china, a self-serve snack bar, and priority check-in and baggage-handling services so your luggage comes out earlier at the carousel.
Price difference: A cheap economy flight from New York to London, round-trip, costs as little as $425; upgrade and it’s upward of $1,280. The upcharge isn’t quite as steep on other routes, such as London to Johannesburg, where you’ll pay closer to double for premium economy.
8. Air Canada
Air Canada stands out for its extensive network of long-haul and international flights with premium economy seats; find them on all A330s, B777s, and B787s.
Why it’s better than coach: The perks are standard: up to 3 inches of additional width (depending on aircraft), 7 inches of added legroom, and one bonus inch of recline. Two free checked bags can compensate for some of your ticket cost, as can complimentary wine and spirits. But the real selling point is the almost-ubiquitous availability on routes that cover much of the globe.
Price difference: You’ll pay two to three times as much as coach fares—a premium, indeed. That’s $1,766, instead of $507, heading from Toronto to London, or $2,171, instead of $1,106, from Vancouver to Tokyo. (Both are round-trip fares.)

Talibam! to release ultra-limited box set containing 15 NEW albums in celebration of their 15th anniversary; announce German festival residency and tour dates
There’s “doing it,” and then there’s “overdoing it.” Guess which way NYC’s premier “Dadaist provocateurs” are leaning? Never ones to mail it in, Talibam! have carved out a 15-year career revealing the often-engrossing uniqueness of a band that has remained confidently outside any easily recognizable genre but has embraced so many. Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea have never shied from showing us their fun and exploratory side; so to celebrate their musical lives together thus far, they’ve announced a new box set containing basically a bazillion new albums and a bunch of German festival shows that are as quirky as they are. An ambitious and artistic box set creation, 15th Anniversary Box Set, 2003-2018, Presenting 15 New Albums for 2018 is exactly that: 15 NEW albums on 8 CDs to celebrate Shea and Mottel’s 15 years as Talibam! This is not a band that caters to any act of convention; so, naturally, each album is a different affair featuring a slew of styles and collaborators, such as Audrey Chen and Phil Minton, Alan Wilkinson, and Colin L. (in fine Billy Joel Cover Band form). All eight discs also include covers adorned with photography by Mottel’s father, the late, esteemed lensman, theater director/producer, and media consultant Syeus Mottel. The CD box is being released in a limited-edition of 100 only, so go here now and send it to someone you love (yourself). Meanwhile, Mottel and Shea are currently playing around in Europe until the beginning of June, after which they will return stateside for a couple of gigs in Miami and Brooklyn. All dates listed from May 18-May 21 are part of Talibam!’s “Artist in Resistance” residency at the Moers Festival in Germany and feature a variety of Talibam! shows and events, sessions, and discussions featuring Mottel, Shea, and frequent collaborators Matt Nelson, Ron Stabinsky, and Luke Stewart. Pour yourself a drink and raise a glass to commemorate one of the most overdoingist bands of the last 15 years. You’ll need a pretty big glass, though; there is a LOT of info below.

Simon Paisley Day (The Once-ler) and The Lorax – Laura Caldow, Ben Thompson and David Ricardo-Pearce (Puppeteers) in Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax at The Old Vic
Two winters ago if you went to the Old Vic Your life would have been filled with something fantastic, A musical treat fit for all of the fam’ly The Lorax is as good as such a show could be.
Returning for half-term with some new cast members The musical’s just as good as I remember, It’s heartfelt and funny and really quite moving A powerful message but not too reproving.
From Dr Seuss’ story comes David Greig’s new book Which warns of the danger of smashing nature’s look, It’s hard to believe its near fifty years old A tale too important though not to be told.
The music by Charlie Fink is monumental With pop songs and rock songs and ballads so gentle, There’s fun in the way the score makes your heart fly But you can’t help but leave with a tear in your eye.
The Lorax is played by Dave Ricardo Pe-arce With Laura and Ben helping as puppeteers, They team up together to such great effect That it’s easy to forget their skill so perfect.
Returning as Once-ler Simon Paisley Day With his green hair and green suit and misguided way, He’s hugely engaging though he plays a villain A problem you can’t treat with amoxicillin.
Rob Howell’s design makes good use of magic trees Especially the way they can bend in the breeze, The lighting by Jon Clark and Tom Gibbons’ sound Create such a magical world all around.
There’s plenty of talent in this gifted comp’ny With Wendy Mae Brown, Jack Beale and Joe Alessi, With so many #StageFaves its talent-a-go-go But Ellena Vincent’s one to look out for though.
I can’t recommend seeing anything more The Lorax is wonderful that is for sure, So book yourself tickets and now it is time To stop thinking I can write reviews in rhyme.
Review by Ian Foster
This dazzlingly funny, moving and inspiring show sees the go-getting Once-ler come face to face with the magical Lorax in a battle over the beloved truffula trees and the whole of Paradise Valley. Adapted for the stage by David Greig with music and lyrics by Charlie Fink (Noah and the Whale Frontman), Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax is a brilliant riot of eye-popping colour, gorgeous puppetry and infectious music to enchant adults and children alike.
The Lorax blends theatrical invention, puppetry, songs and zany humour in a timely and vibrant Christmas show with a message for grandparents, parents and children alike.
