I've been working on a manuscript explaining pharmacognosy concepts and how to extract phytochemicals in a crude lab. It was only when I'd gotten up to the cardiac glycosides and how to extract and concentrate them I realized I was accidentally writing a poisoning manual. Which would explain why I couldn't find a book about this already.
Just gonna...put this manuscript in the back and work on something else for awhile. Wtf.

I stumble across a lot of photos from last year's work on a pharmacognosy project in the phone gallery. It is a pity to delete it, because under the microscope a completely different picture opens up, which has its own aesthetics.

Okay okay so for the ask game: 1 and 3 for Amanita and Yagoda, 5 and 14 for Amanita and Pokora and 6 and 12 for Yagoda and the character in the pinned comic. I'm asking a lot so you don't have to answer all of it if you don't wanna.
hi thank you for the questions and sorry it took a while >,> For Amanita and Yagoda: 1. How did they meet? At around the time Yagoda has finished her journey to the court of the Mistress (as mentioned here), a particular rumor has started circulating around the towns and villages of Nav*. A ridiculous, tall tale about people rising from their graves. News spread around, and soon enough the druids also caught wind of it. Now, the druids are generally hermits who don’t shove their noses into others’ business, but a rumor like that would probably rile them up even if their way of life already turned them into a bunch of trees. And so, Amanita sets off. As it happens, the investigation also leads her to the same court as Yagoda. Amanita doesn’t deal in deception or half-truths, so she immediately spilled the beans to her on exactly why she’s there. *i realised i didn't think much about names of geographical locations. nav is a (possibly placeholder) name for the region most events take place. 3. What were their first impressions of each other? How does that compare to their impressions of each other now? Frankly I’d say their relationship has not started off smooth. There were just a few things about Amanita that didn’t really add up in Yaga’s mind. She wears the attire of a common girl, and yet she’s very familiar with scientific names of plants and mushrooms. Granted, the Book of Assorted Magic and Mysticism Practices might be an outdated resource, but if it was to be trusted - the druid circles comprise mainly village people of minimum or no education. If Amanita really was a druid, wouldn’t she call herself Muchomůrka or something? This is a trick, surely this is a conspiracy- Amanita’s first impression of Yagoda was… that she looks fifteen. When she snuck into the court records (“crimes aren’t crimes if they serve the greater good!”) and found out that a mage arrived there suspiciously close to when the rumors started, she was halfway expecting for the investigation to be over. But when she met Yaga, she was like “what is this kid doing here?” and dropped her suspicions. Currently, Yagoda thinks of Amanita as eccentric and even slightly cryptic, but ultimately harmless and, secretly, is happy to be friends with another girl (since most of her social circle is guys and Very Scary Women). Amanita also thinks positively about Yaga, although she still treats her like someone she needs to be a role-model for, rather than equals. amanita as a role model,,,, she's a good person I guess, but more in a chaotic good way. "is stealing actually wrong let's discuss" also yaga is not fifteen she's like nineteen
^ lil drawing i was supposed to finish today but eh. one day...
For Amanita and Pokora: 5. Do they get along? Why or why not?
They do. And it’s actually a bit unusual, I guess. Would you believe if I said that little ol’ pious Pokora is a pretty controversial figure amongst the circles of druids? In the eyes of the elders, they are too lenient and trample the tradition by letting city folk and travellers from other lands in on their secrets. In the eyes of their own underlings, they are still too passive - and frankly, they don’t have the best track record of picking their subordinates. Amanita thinks it’s unfair to treat Pokora like they have all the answers in the world. Asking yourself why you believe something is right, instead of just accepting it because it’s right, it’s just good for your soul, y’know? And she herself has also been getting some glares for having a scholarly background. Amanita is hands down Pokora’s favourite student. 14. Do they share the same goals in life? Hmm… in a way. It’s a common ideology among druids and other practitioners of plant-based magic that to live in peace with the outer world is to live in peace with your inner world. But while Pokora has little interest in everyday human squabbles and would be happier strolling on mountains and petting mountain goats, Amanita thinks of humans as an integral part of nature. That’s why she goes out and uses magic she learnt to ensure people’s safety and wellbeing. Pokora gives her the green light to do whatever she needs to do, but they can’t exercise the same empathy. Maybe it’s something to do with their kamzik nature. I'm gonna make an educated guess that the character in the comic meant the blue lizard guy so in that case: For Yagoda and Kirik: 6. Do they have any shared interests/hobbies? Do they ever do these hobbies together? The two of them met in a somewhat “professional” setting, so their friendship started due to convenience rather than any shared hobby. That being said, Kirik tries to relate to Yaga’s interest in magic by, let’s say, comparing potion making to cooking. Soup is witchcraft.
is this anything. does this fill my monthly comic quota. i had to paste it from google docs pls lawd dont let this be crusty
12. Do they have any affection for each other? How do they show it? It’s pretty easy to see if Yaga likes someone or not, because if she didn’t, she wouldn’t pay any mind to them beyond one word answers to questions. She would like to reward him for his hospitality by teaching him a spell or two. Sadly, he’s just not that magically inclined. But he’s welcome to look through her book anytime. It’s much harder to tell if Kirik likes someone or is just being nice. In fact, an outsider might not be able to tell that at all. But one thing that Yaga noticed is that the more Kirik likes someone, the more his way of talking changes from “what would you like to do?” to “here’s what I’m doing, you can join if you’d like”.
#finally i got to all the questions yay yippee yahoo#this is my 100th post actually so i wanted it to be good. heres the women special#anyway ive been thinking a few weeks ago whats amanitas background and i was like well her name is funny lets do something with that#2 yrs of pharmacognosy in uni may have made me want to log off but at least i can roleplay druids really convincingly#fern flower siege#ask

Researchers have discovered that Daphne pseudomezereum (commonly known as Onishibari) contains a substance inhibiting replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The plants were cultivated at the Medicinal Plant Garden of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Toho University. This finding is expected to lead to the discovery of drug seeds for novel drugs with superior anti-HIV activity. A paper reporting this study was published in the journal Phytochemistry. The research group was led by Professor Wei Li from the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Toho University, in collaboration with the Duke University Medical Center in the United States. The Thymelaeaceae family consists of over 53 genera and 800 species distributed worldwide, except in polar and desert regions. These plants contain diterpenoids, which exhibit significant biological activities, including anticancer, anti-HIV, and analgesic effects.

I read that as tarn with zoomies and got confused for a second.
I love his bitties though, they could be chewing on him and he'd be so chill about it.
I had to correct it as I meant Zoom meetings 😅
Tarn may be a wet cat in the berth, but he really does enjoy the "new" spousal duties and fatherhood. To him, it's a natural extension of being a top-tier Decepticon as he doesn't realize it soothes the social connections his broken Seekerkin-coding has been howling for and receives the emotional fulfillment he's been craving since he onlined.
If the kids aren't with the wife, then he's hoarding them to himself. He really does adore having them all sprawl across his frame as they're still super young with simple harmonics in their EM fields, bursting with happiness and love in his presence.
He has taken up reading to bitties. Of course, Towards Peace is his default, but he also takes breaks with a series of Underground poetry and books about anatomy, declassified files, accounts about the Decepticon uprising, and your handwritten tales of Camien folklore, toxicology, and pharmacognosy.

Miracle Plant Used in Ancient Greece Rediscovered After 2,000 Years
— By Giovanni Prete | January 3, 2024

Ancient Greek Plant Silphium. Credit: Wikimedia Commons/Eckard Wolff-Postler cc By 3.0
The “miracle” plant Silphium consumed by Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, which was thought to have become extinct two thousand years ago, has recently been rediscovered in Turkey by a professor, who thinks he’s found a botanical survivor.
The plant, which the Ancient Greeks called silphion (Silphium), was a golden-flowered plant. It was once the most sought-after product in the Mediterranean even before the rise of Athens and the Roman Empire.
It is believed that the plant with yellow flowers attached to a thick stalk was crushed, roasted, sauteed, and boiled for medicinal purposes, food, and even contraception. During the reign of Julius Caesar, more than a thousand pounds of the plant were stockpiled alongside gold in Rome’s imperial treasures, and silphion saplings were valued at the same price as silver.
However, just seven centuries after the adored plant was first documented growing along the coast of Cyrenaica in what is now modern day Libya, silphion disappeared from the ancient Mediterranean world.
Roman chronicler Pliny the Elder in his Natural History claims that “just one stalk has been found” of the plant in the first century A.D., “and it has been given to Emperor Nero.” This was the last documented account of the silphion.
Inspired by ancient accounts, botanical explorers throughout the Middle Ages perpetually sought the plant across three continents although in vain. Consequently, historians believed the disappearance of silphion to be the first recorded extinction of any species, plant, or animal.
Despite the plant having been perceived to be extinct for centuries and having completely disappeared from the history books, a researcher at Istanbul University, Mahmut Miski, suspects he has re-discovered the ancient plant. He believes the Ferula Drudeana that grows on Mount Hasan is the elusive ancient plant—nearly a thousand miles from where it once grew.
According to a report by National Geographic, the researcher found it has similarities with the silphion plant which line up with old botanical texts and images of the plant on Ancient Greek coins.

The researcher has noticed that both plants have the same thick branching root and yellow flowers. In addition, both have powerful medicinal purposes. Ferula Drudeana has anticancer compounds and anti-inflammatory properties much like those known to be found in silphium.
Even though Ferula Drudeana is found hundreds of miles from where it originated, according to Miski, it has been found in two locations in Turkey, which were once home to Ancient Greeks thousands of years ago. One of these locations is Cappadocia.
Analysis Shows Similar Medicinal Compounds As The Ancient Plant
Miski, who specializes in pharmacognosy, the study of medicines derived from natural sources, first encountered the modern plant he now believes to be silphion while conducting postdoctoral research. He had received a grant to collect specimens of Ferula, which is in the same family as carrots, fennel, and parsley, and has the reputation for yielding many novel disease-fighting compounds.
While Miski was studying the plants on Mount Hassan, he determined it had thirty secondary metabolites that have medical purposes. Among the compounds are many have cancer-fighting, contraceptive, and anti-inflammatory properties. Miski believes that future analyses of the plant will reveal the existence of dozens of yet-to-be-identified compounds of medical interest.
On Mount Hassan, Miski also encountered caretakers of the plants who informed him sheep and goats are fond of the leaves, as is mentioned in Pliny’s record of the ancient silphion.
According to Pliny’s records, sheep and goats would graze in pastures where silphion grew. The sheep would fall asleep after consuming it, and it caused goats to sneeze. His text reads: “The juice of this plant is called ‘laser’ and it is greatly in vogue for medicinal as well as other purposes, being sold at the same rate as silver. For these many years past, however, it has not been found in Cyrenaica.”
According to a 2021 study published in the journal Plants by Miski and his team, Ferula drudeana had similarities with the silphion as described in ancient text and depicted on Cyrenaican coins: from thick branching roots to celery-like leaves.

However, similarity in appearance wasn’t the only compelling link. It is said that the first silphion appeared after a “heavy spring downpour,” which, in those days, was called “black rain.”
According to Miski and his team, “We find it stated by the most trustworthy among the Greek writers…that this plant made its appearance near the gardens of the Hesperides and the Greater Syrtis immediately after the earth had been soaked on…by a shower as black as pitch.” This event took place seven years prior to the foundation of the city of Cyrenae.
Miski observed that when rains came to Cappadocia in April, Ferula Drudeana would spring from the ground, growing up to six feet in just a month.
Moreover, as ancient silphion resisted cultivation, it had to be harvested in the wild. It is said that Cyrenaic nobles entrusted its cultivation to desert nomads. Two attempts reported by Hippocrates to transplant it to mainland Greece failed. Similarly, Miski found that Ferula Drudeana is difficult to transplant. He found that the only way it could be done was by using cold stratification, a process of subjecting seeds to both cold and moist conditions. By utilizing this technique, Miski and his team were able to grow Ferula in a greenhouse.
One of the main reasons Ferula had not immediately been identified as silphion is mainly because of its location. However, as Miski had discovered, the region in Turkey where Mount Hasan sits was home to ancient Greeks thousands of years ago, and these people could have easily transported the plant.
Erica Rowan, an associate professor in archaeobotany at Royal Holloway University of London, finds Miski’s speculations plausible. “The ancients were very good at transporting things,” Rowan points out. “There’s no reason why people from Cyrenaica couldn’t have brought the seeds to Cappadocia and planted them. They’re similar enough with a Mediterranean climate. And this Ferula species does look like what’s shown on the coins.”

LoZ - Becoming a Toxin Master or Mistress
There used to be an order of Sheikah Warriors that were known as Dokuso Shokushei (毒素職精, from the Japanese concept of Shokunin, 職人), or Toxin Masters/Mistresses. The creation & use of toxins is known as Dokusojutsu (毒素術, or toxin method) or simply Dokujutsu (毒術, poison method) & those who practice Dokujutsu, but aren't masters yet are known as Dokushei (毒精).
The profession generally revolves around the identification, nullification, & creation of toxins, whether for the purpose of helping or hurting. This can also include the creation of medicines, which gives Dokushei a degree of experience in healing & quite a lot of knowledge in pharmacology & alchemy. In this way, Dokushei tend to study what amounts of toxicology & toxinology, as well as herbalism & even pharmacognosy.
In order to become a Toxin Master, a Sheikah is expected to first master something known as toxin immunization training. This is where a Sheikah will slowly consume small amounts of toxic substances in order to build up a tolerance, & eventually, an immunity to them.
As a Dokushei achieves each step in their training, they are given a part of a complete tattoo & upon reaching the final stages of the training, then showing this tattoo to master sushi chefs specifically trained in how to prepare these dishes, known as Doku-Itamae (毒板前), in Kakariko will allow one to be served special dishes only available to Toxin Masters. (Regular Itamae being the traditional idea of a master sushi chef or master regular chef.) Such as Venin Pufferfish (Doku-Fugu, 毒フグ) & even some frogs & snakes.
Seriously though, it is illegal for someone who isn't a registered Doku-Itamae to even be in possession of Vinen Puffers. You can't even get it to-go! Like, you have to eat it right there at the restaurant in full view of a Sheikah Warrior (who know how to spot sleight-of-hand), in order to make sure that the possibly deadly food does not leave the restaurant & possibly kill someone.
Anyway, in order to become a registered Doku-Itamae, you have to be able to consistenty remove the most poisonous parts of a fish without a single mistake, over 100 times in a row. You also have to renew your license to prepare these fish every year by doing it again.
Those who manage to eat them & survive, though, say that they're absolutely scrumptious.
And Venin Pufferfish Liver (Doku-Fugu-Kimo, 毒フグ肝), while the tastiest part of the fish, is also the most poisonous.
Interestingly, being a Toxin Master does not mean that you won't go through symptoms. It just means that you'll survive the Fugu-Kimo without need for immediate medical attention. If you want to get to a point where you are completely unaffected by Fugu-Kimo, then that's on you. Though no one has managed to reach that level of immunization as of yet.
Moving on, in order to even qualify as a Doku-Itamae, you need to be both an ordinary Itamae, as well as a Toxin Master to begin with.
So, it's a very seriously deep cultural thing for the Sheikah.
On the other hand, you are not allowed to eat Fugu-Kimo until you've become a full-fledged Toxin Master & thus reached full mastery of immunization training & received the final part of the tattoo.
The reason being that Fugu is one of the most toxic fish on earth & while it can be prepared in such a way that it can be eaten by anyone, it is an extremely difficult technique & even one wrong move could kill someone.
So, to prevent untimely demises, only certain people are allowed to eat it & even then, they are expected to sign a waiver beforehand.
At the same time, when Toxin Masters eat such deadly food & manage to overcome the poisons on their own, it causes a sort of high. It's not hallucinogenic or addictive or anything, more so just something that makes you feel really damn good. Like, an instant shot of super serotonin.
Though, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that part of the high could be produced from a sense of accomplishment. However, that isn't the primary source.
However, these foods are also expensive & it's strictly regulated to the point where you can only, legally, have one serving of Doku-Fugu-Kimo every half a year.
At the same time, the fact of the matter is that most Sheikah don't typically ever become very rich, so the reality ends up being that eating Doku-Fugu-Kimo is literally a once in a lifetime sort of treat.
You can usually get regular Doku-Fugu Sashimi at a far more manageable price than Doku-Fugu-Kimo. However, that's partially because regular Doku-Fugu, especially when prepared properly, is much less deadly than its Kimo.
This is NOT supposed to be an everyday thing in any respects. You also have to make a reservation ahead of time so that the Doku-Itamae can get his hands on the main ingredient as, due to so few being allowed to have it & so infrequently, there's really no need to keep stocked.
And, as mentioned before, you're also required to sign a waver acknowledging that you do understand that the fish are highly toxic. That way, if you do die because of it, it's officially classified as suicide.
There are exceptions for if evidence comes up showing that the poisoning was intentional on the chef's part, but other than that, the chef gets a pass.
If the consumer didn't practice their due diligence in making sure they retained the required level of immunity, then it isn't the chef's responsibility. They aren't the costumer's parent.
Lynelfish (Raineryūgo, 雷練笠子), despite being the literal deadliest fish in Hyrule (even more so than Fugu), actually aren't that hard to prepare so long as you're careful as they're venomous &, as such, are only toxic if you're pricked with one of their quills, which are easy enough to remove. What makes them so expensive is the means by which you have to catch them.
You can't bait or hook them & you sure as hell can't catch them with your bare hands, thus leaving the only means of catching them being spearfishing, which takes a lot of skill to do. As such, it's impossible to catch a lot of them quckly.
Their meat is also delectable when seasoned correctly. As a result, these fish are actually okay for a beginner-level Doku-Itamae to prepare & can even be served to regular civilians without worry. And chefs can even keep a small stock of them.
However, due to the means by which they have to be caught, they tend to get sold out quickly.
This allows them to be a decently fancy menu item that let's Doku-Itamae keep their skills sharp.
Using Lynelfish as an Itamae is all about focusing on it's flaky meat & naturally mild, slightly buttery flavor. So, the enjoyment is mostly in the subtlty of the meat.
However, if you're looking for a more flavorful use for the meat, you should think about Lurelin or Eventide, where they really know how to season the meat to the fullest & Lynelfish meat just all-around takes to being seasoned very well.
---
Anyway, the Toxin Master Tattoo is commonly placed on the bicep, so that it's easiest to reveal, while still being easy to keep hidden.
This is what the tattoo looks like in full:

That's what the Vicious Sickle (Kubigari Kama, Decapitator Sickle, 首刈り鎌) & Demon Carver (Oni-hori Enkama, Demon-Carving Circular-Sickle, 鬼彫り円鎌) were originally supposed to represent: levels of mastery in toxin crafting. Vicious Sickles were for intermediate-level toxin crafters, while 2 Vicious Sickles were a sign of being at an advanced level. - I just didn't care much for Kubigari Gatana (首刈り刀, Decapitator) or Oni Enba (鬼円刃, Ogre Circular-Blade).
Though, the Sheikah never made any Demon Carvers. That was all the Yiga's idea.
Anyway, having the handle & one of the curved blade symbols represents being at an intermediate level, while having both, but without the spikes represents being in the advanced stages of training.
You don't get the Mind's Eye symbol in the middle until you've been recognized as a full Toxin Master.
Admittedly, originally, most Yiga were at least training as toxin crafters, however now they just give Demon Carvers to whoever in the Yiga Clan.
(Realistically speaking, Demon Carvers are not actually very practical as legitimate weapons. Which is why there was no actual physical equivalent among the Dokushei ranks originally. Rather, most Dokushei who'd reached the Advanced-level would simply get a 2nd Vicious Sickle. It was the Yiga who brought the Demon Carver into reality. Possibly as a means to suggest that they were the true Dokuso Shokushei... Or Shokuga, I suppose.)
---
Being a Dokushei also comes with a toxin extraction tool kit of sorts.
Extremely useful, whether it be via the harvesting of toxic plants, cutting out venom sacks, removing paralytic quills, or deadly fangs.

🫥 20.02.2024 // Another full studying day! 📖
I didn't study as much as yesterday as I was feeling somewhat overwhelmed so I took it easy. I studied pharmacognosy, the chapter about the aminoglycosides.
One thing that took alllll my energy today is that I went back to my pharmacy because I had doubt about a patient I saw last Saturday.
[tw mention of blood and wounds] I was concerned because she said to me how she bleed easily and how her little wound on the finger hasn't cicatrise for one hour (which is reaaaally long and very too much). I asked my hematology professor about it (he told me it's not normal, even with anticoagulant drugs) and I went back in the pharmacy to ask if I can see the prescription to analyse it more (conclusion there was an antiplatelets drug) and if I can call her back to ask if she is okay and to tell her that it's not normal to bleed that easily and long and that she have to talk her doctor about it (I didn't have the strength to tell her to go the ER the next time it happens but I should have.) [end of the tw]
I'm a super socially anxious person so it was reaaaaally hard for me to 1. ask my professor about it 2. go back to the pharmacy and explain everything to my coworkers 3. call her on the phone
Anyway I'm glad I was able to do it and I feel better now :)))

This is how I got into pharmacognosy! Medical care isn't readily available where I live, esp. for minorities and women. Some local remedies worked and I wanted to know why. Then to understand the papers I was trying to read i had to learn biology then botany then chemistry then biochemistry then anatomy and pathology... You don't get a consistent yield and you have to do a lot of estimation and guesswork, but a low dose of medicine is better than nothing.
i strongly believe that it's better to take aspirin of a known dosage than to take some willow bark with an unknown amount of active compound that could also just be sawdust from an unrelated tree. like that's just factually correct. medical science is real and the supplement industry is an unregulated nightmare of mostly scams. but. the thing is. if, in order to get aspirin, i had to schedule an appointment where i tell my doctor that my friend said i might have a headache (because i can't just say i have a headache without being treated like a googlemad hypochondriac). and then the doctor nodded and ordered a bunch of expensive tests that have very little to do with my head and a lot to do with the size of my ass. and the tests all came back fine so he shrugged and asked if my head hurt and when i said yes he prescribed me some aspirin while emphasizing he didn't know if it would help but i could give it a shot if i really wanted. and if i had to do that every time i wanted some aspirin. i would probably start eyeballing the willow bark. to be perfectly honest with you.
