The president of the United States stays silent on gun control after a recent school shooting in Florida that claimed the lives of 17 human beings. He stays silent about gun control but vows action on mental illness. In my opinion the most clear-cut reforms to be considered would be expanding background checks to more gun sales, a longer wait period, preventing violent criminals, the mentally ill, domestic abusers for example, from being able to purchase a weapon, and mandating that gun owners safely store their weapons. Why isn’t the GOP funding research into gun violence? Right, because Congress is effectively banning any federal cash from going to research that might lead to the conclusion that more guns mean more people are killed by those guns. These politicians claim to be “pro-life” yet cut a paycheque from a profit driven gun lobby. The NRA AND THE GOP have all this innocent blood on their hands and unless the NRA gets out of the pockets of politicians nothing will be done about the gun control policy and people will continue to die without reason. 18 school shootings in 2018 to date. 18 school shootings in 46 days. No legal regime can prevent every determined madman from killing people, that’s a fact. Do y'all realize how hurt we are as people? We allowed a hashtag to divide us even though we are on the same side of the coin. As South Africans (not just men and women) we need to put a stop to all these issues. We need to force our government to fix the justice system and improve the police force. Instead of waiting for crimes, we should create jobs for the unemployed social scientists, social workers, psychologists and community developers to help prevent these problems.
