What is Clubhouse App?
In April 2020, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Paul Davison and ex-Google employee Rohan Seth developed and launched an audio chat app called clubhouse. Recently it is gaining tons of traction because some celebrities and high-profile people like the game, and Kevin Hart started to use this social media platform. It is part talkback radio, part conference call.
When we think of social media platforms, how to assess them is the first question that comes to our minds. So the assessment is important because currently, the clubhouse app is an invite-only social media platform. To access the audio chat clubhouse app, you actually need an invitation from the user who is already using the platform. We recommend you to download the app from the Apple store because it is iOS only and reserve your username if you don’t have an invite. As on social media platforms, your username gives you a unique identity.
How does Clubhouse work?
As you know that Clubhouse is an audio-chat social media platform, which means that you can not share pictures and videos. It is a social media platform where people can virtually meet up by creating a room to host, listen to, and in some cases, join conversations within the app’s community. If you have already reserved your username and have an invitation from a member, you can join chat rooms as well as you can start your room. Each chat room created on the Clubhouse app has moderators, speakers, and listeners. The Moderators of the room have control over who gives the speaking privileges, though listeners can “raise their hand” in the chat if they want to speak.

How to develop an audio chat app like Clubhouse?
So you have an idea of a brainstorming app like clubhouse and you want to develop to create a difference in the app market, then you have landed at the right place. Being an award winning company, we have developed several successful apps. You can also follow these easy steps to convert your idea of a social media app like clubhouse into reality.
Here are a few Steps to develop app like Clubhouse:
1. Conduct detailed Market Research
Once you have a unique idea of a mobile app like Clubhouse in your mind and you decide to execute it, the first thing that you should proceed with is detailed market research. For your app success, it is necessary because several social media apps are already present on the app store.
You can start with analyzing your competitor’s social media apps, What features, services they are providing to their users. Compare what unique features you are providing and what features you can integrate into your social media app to stay ahead in the competition. Secondly, start checking users’ reviews on the app store. They are also beneficial in creating your social media app more engaging as people share their opinions and experience with mobile apps and rate them.
2. Identify Your Target Audience
Your app’s success on how better you understand the target audience. For better understanding of targeted audiences, you need secure information like demographics, such as (Age groups, gender, country), preferences, and problems of the app’s potential users. You can gather these information from analytics. You need
At the initial stage, your family members, friends will be users of your social media app. You can start with what improvements they are expecting in your mobile app. When you have sufficient active users, you can start creating focus groups in which users can share their experience. Users’ valuable information can help you to improve your mobile app. You can schedule an interview call with your users to discover their problems, expectations and work on resolving them.
Instead of focusing on increasing the number of downloads on the app store, you should focus on the users reviews and rating. Understanding your users’ requirements can make your development easier and develop a better final product. You should invest time in finding more about your potential users.
3. Focus User-Friendly and Intuitive Design
In a mobile app, attractive and intuitive designs play a vital role in attracting users. If your app has crashes, bugs, and users struggling to navigate an app, you are allowing users to shift to a competitor app. You need to design your mobile app considering the user experience.
To retain users with your mobile app attractive visual appearance is not sufficient. You need to understand their expectations and the improvements they want in your mobile app.
Consider the different types of users who are already using the voice chat app. If your mobile app’s primary audience is influencers, you must include features to produce content easily and connect with their followers. At the same time, you’ll want to ensure the app is equally intuitive for the followers, which may be made up of young adults.
Developing an app with balanced visual appearances, features, and functions can be a difficult task. If you have designing skills, then you can design it by yourself. Or you can hire dedicated UI UX designers for the same. Experts can help you develop an engaging and user-centric mobile app.
4. Hire dedicated Developers
Once you have finalized UI UX designing and your mobile app feature list, the next step is to hire skilled and expert developers for your mobile app. Hiring developers depends upon the budget of your development project. If you have a low budget, you can hire remote developers or freelance developers. You can find them online on websites like freelancer, Upwork, Toptal, Fiver, and others.
You have the budget for developing a mobile app, you can hire an onshore or offshore app development company. If you want to hire an onshore company, you can search them locally or consult with your friends with they have any contact. Hiring a development company in the USA, UK, or Europe, might cost you around $150 to $200 per hour. If you want to hire offshore developers, you can choose countries like India, Sri Lanka. They have experienced and skilled developers. Hiring developers from India might cost you around $50 to $80 per hour.
As app developers, we start the development process with business analysis, developing a technical specification, estimating the development cost, and planning the project. At every stage, you can track the progress of your mobile app like Clubhouse.

5. Build an MVP Model
When you start developing your app, you should have a long wish list of features integrated into the voice chat app. At the initial stage, it is not attainable to create a mobile app with all its features. Developing a fully-featured app might cost you high and increase the time to launch and market. We recommend, first, build and launch an MVP ( Minimum Viable Product) and test out the core ideas in the market. If your users love your app features, then you can launch a fully-featured app. These will save you time, effort as well as money.
Before you start to develop an MVP app, let’s first understand what a Minimum Viable product is. An MVP is a working app that consists of essential features and functions. Features that could enhance the user experience and do not affect the functioning of your MVP app. Launching an MVP model first allows you and the development team to identify core issues that affect the apps’ functionality and marketing appeal. You have enough time to take prevent measures and avoid them in your final product.
6. Market product and Collect user feedback
Before your mobile app, launched on the app store, you have users who are excited to use your social media app like Clubhouse. Strategic marketing can provide you better results. To increase your marketing reach, you can connect with social media influencers to try your app and share their experience. You can reach out to popular publications for exposure, and that can attract more potential new users.
After your MVP app launches, you should constantly review your user’s feedback. Work on identifying the potential issues as well as determining that your app is meeting users’ expectations.
Rather than depending fully upon analytics, you can arrange interviews with your potential users for their valuable feedback on their experience and identify their expectations. What new features and functionality they want in your mobile app. Through the feedback, you can identify the areas of improvement that you should overcome in the next release.
Cost to Develop an Audio-Chat iPhone App Like Clubhouse
Several factors comprise the development cost of mobile apps like Clubhouse. The common factor includes.
Mobile app design
Features-set
Location of the agency

To develop an app like Clubhouse, we recommend taking the same route as they did – first create and launch a Beta version of your social media app before launching the actual fully featured app. In this way, you can measure users’ interests before developing a fully featured app. You can adjust the features and functions in the final product.

What Is PeoplePerHour?
PeoplePerHour.com is a UK based online marketplace. A skill-selling marketplace is just like the traditional online marketplaces that offer opportunities to outsource or freelance different jobs.PPH is an online freelance marketplace, like eight out of ten marketplaces where work is exchanged, but although the basic structure is the same, PPH has several features that are different from other marketplaces, a little different and interesting. In other words, PPH is a crowdsourcing platform, meaning that if a trader or buyer buys a specific service or job from an online community, not a professional office, in this case, it can be called a crowdsourcing example. Here, the contractor who wants to give the job can easily post the job as a buyer, and the person who will outsource the work can also sell his skills as a seller. At the same time you can buy a job, then display it for sale, from where thousands of buyers or clients will be able to choose the desired job.The number of online marketplaces is increasing day by day, but to be appreciated globally, each marketplace needs a number of features, such as acceptability, job opportunities, competitive balance, financial withdrawal facilities, etc.PPH started their journey not too long ago, In 2007, Genius Trisivalu and Sims Kitares jointly launched the web-based company. It has branches in London and New York City. At the moment, the number of active users of PPH is about two and a half million, of which one hundred and eighty thousand freelancers and seventy thousand clients or buyers. Most clients or buyers prefer full-time professional freelancers to small enterprises. And this is why there is a lot of demand for independent freelancers outside PPH companies. The animation industry
“The corporate structure of companies active in the business ranges from the largest media conglomerates in the world ( Walt Disney, Time Warner and Viacom Inc.) to small companies amounting to little more than a designer with a PC and the latest software package.”
- Wescott T (2011) An overview of the global animation industry. Creative Industries Journal pp. 253 - 259.
The first lecturer of this module tackled questions about the animation industry. This is a vast topic and probably everyone gets a bit lost at the beginning or to where to begin at all. The lecturer was built around the most important questions one need to ask from themselves when they plan to step into the industry.
Statics and conclusion from the lesson’s pdf:
‘The animation sector currently employs 56,800 people and employment is predicted to grow by 8% over the next 5 years. Employers have said that 25% of current vacancies are due to skills shortages across both 2D and 3D.Productions employ a huge number of staff, many of whom will be freelance, to complete projects. 2014’s Paddington employed 893 people of whom 200-300 were animation artists.’
-Creative Skillset
EDUCATION
78% of the workforce are educated to degree level.
27% of the workforce hold a postgraduate qualification.
Only 1% of the workforce have undertaken an apprenticeship.
56% of respondents had found out about their current or most recent role through informal recruitment.
Of those working in terrestrial TV 73% were likely to use formal classroom training. For both the games (53%) and the VFX (45%) workforces, online resources was the most commonly used mode of training.
48% of the workforce has undertaken some unpaid work during their career. (original works)
Estimated number of UK jobs in film, TV, radio and photography in creative industries in 2015: 231,000.
In 2013, there were more than 5.400 film production companies, over 2,200 post-production companies, 395 film distributors, and 215 exhibitors.
30% of people working in the creative media industries are freelance. This varies by sector from just 9% in VFX to 90% in film production.
Most film businesses have fewer than 10 employees.
Rise in creative industry jobs in film, TV, radio and photography: 1.6 per cent (2014-15), and 9.9 per cent (2011-2015)
Average annual income was £33,900 (a rise of 6% on 2010). Income ranged greatly from £45,900 in VFX to £23,150 in film.
Conclusion:
stand on more legs but know your stuff,
employment is rising due to skill shortanage in both 2D and 3d animation,
education is important having a postgraduate degree looks goon in a CV but so does previous employment or faward winning stuff,
but don’t stress over your CV it’s more important to know peopled have a big wide network cause probably your friend or classmate or colleague will be the one who gets you the next job,
big companies are not everything,
be flexible and open and always ready to learn,
there is no unified salary or any union which collects animators and defends their rights,
most people work freelance and freelancer work on many stuff big and small productions too,
Vfx earns the best but truly those who go to advertisement.
The questions which to all I can’t give an answer now but will fill them out over time when I figured myself out:
Where do you want to live?
One would think that it is a question to ask later when you already have the luxury to chose. And to be honest I thought that too, but actually, it’s really something that people should focus on more at the beginning. If you know where you want to live you can look into companies that area and manage your portfolio according to their interests. But it’s also good to have as a long term goal too. This type of work is really flexible so it’s also possible to work from any point in the world if you have a good computer/laptop with the softwares needed and internet connection.
My answer: I want travel live in many places around the world then settle down or not. I don’t mind working and living in one place, wherever that will be, I’m thinking about staying in the UK after graduation then later maybe going back to Hungary and then travel some more, but I aspire to later be employed in a way which let’s me moving around the globe.
What do you want to spend your day doing?
Good question.
What skills can you offer the workplace?
good humour?
Who do you want to watch your work?
people
What platform do you want to create content for?
screen
Who do you want your clients to be?
probably people?
What style of employment suits you?
Style of employments:
Freelancing - self employmed working for different companies on particular assignments. Could be within a studio, could be remote.
Colectives - more than one freelancer working together as a team
eg:     Moth;          the line.          Job, Boris and Marieke
Employment by a company - working for one company, for a salary with set hours.
my answer: hah if only I knew

7 IMPORTANT WEIGHT LOSS FACTS THAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW
Here’s an interesting fact – there are more obese people in the United States than there are people at a healthy weight. This is quite alarming, especially when you consider the fact that obesity is linked to a reduced lifespan and is also classified as the primary cause of preventable deaths. The United States isn’t the only country finding obesity to be a damaging public health concern. Even in the United Kingdom, obesity affects over 50% of the national population, as reported by the Government Statistical Service UK.
Losing weight is often possible through a healthy, balanced diet and through participating in weight loss exercises. For some, however weight loss is not as simple as it seems to be for others. There are many people who maintain a regular physical activity routine and sticks to a healthy diet, but still find it almost impossible to reduce their body fat percentage and reach a healthier weight. We would like to discuss seven interesting facts that people need to realize about weight loss – especially those who are having a hard time losing weight effectively, even when they do exert effort from their side.
1. Sleep Contributes To Weight Loss
This is probably a fact about weight loss that will be surprising to most of our readers, but it has been proven through scientific research that sleep contributes to a person’s ability to lose weight. Firstly, it seems like sleep inhibits the control that genes may have on a person’s weight. Men’s Fitness reports that a recent study provided evidence that the genes of people who did not sleep at least seven hours a night contributed to around 70% of the individual’s weight. Amongst those who slept for longer than seven hours per night, gene control on weight was only around 32%. Sleep deficiency also causes an imbalance in the hormones that are involved in satiety and hunger, which may lead to overeating.
2. Quick-Fix Diets May Do More Harm Than Good
You’ll often read about quick-fix diets that guarantee you will lose a lot of pounds in a very short period of time. While some of these diets may help to lose some weight quickly, it is important to know that quick-fix diets are almost never the option. For example, these diets often restrict the person from eating a lot of calories and may even tell the person to avoid high protein food and some other foods that can be beneficial to their weight in the long run. In many cases, people also tend to pick up more weight than they lost when they follow these quick-fix diets.
Check Out The Man Diet
3. Your Diet Has A Major Effect On Your Weight
A lot of people think that joining up at the gym and exercising regularly will help them lose weight effectively. Unfortunately, it is wishful thinking in quite a lot of cases. A person would join the gym, exercise frequently and discover that, even with hard work and dedication at the gym, they are not losing any weight. Women’s Health reports that weight loss is not only about exercise – in fact, exercise only contributes to weight loss around 20%. The other 80% is all dependent on the person’s diet.
4. Alcohol Count As Calories
Alcoholic drinks do not contain any nutritional values on their labels, which causes a lot of people to think that they are not really required to count the calories they consume through alcoholic beverages toward their daily calorie intake. Quite the opposite is true as the calories do count towards your daily calorie intake and alcohol can cause weight loss to become much harder, especially if you drink too much alcohol. A glass of scotch, for example, can contain as much as 105 calories. A glass of brandy contains around 115 calories, a glass of coffee liqueur approximately 137 calories, a large glass of wine can contain up to 125 calories and a glass of beer contains as much as 145 calories.
5. Intensity Can Beat Time
If weight loss seems difficult or you need to up your calories burned per day, then the first thought would be that you may have to spend more time at the gym every day. This may be inconvenient if you are already on a busy schedule and hardly getting the time to exercise each day.
Instead of increasing the time you participate in training protocols, you can opt to increase the intensity. People often fail to realize that by increasing the intensity of their workouts, they are also able to increase their calories burnt and even build muscle mass faster.
6. A Gym Is Not A Definite Requirement For Weight Loss
A lot of people postpone their journey to a healthy body weight because they do not have the time or money for a gym right now. This is quite common, but people tend to forget that they do not need a gym to lose weight effectively. While a gym may certainly make things a little easier, thanks to the guidance offered by the trained personnel, it is not a definite requirement. Instead, you can follow some professional trainers that post videos on YouTube and on other platforms to get a good workout in the comfort of your own home.
7. The Easiest And Best Time To Lose Weight Is Now
People do not only postpone their weight loss journey because they do not have enough time on their schedule or not enough money to join a gym. There are many reasons why people postpone their weight loss journey, but what they do not realize is NOW is the best time for them to get started. The body’s metabolism naturally declines with age, especially with a sedentary lifestyle, which means postponing will most definitely make things much harder in the future.
Conclusion
Losing weight is beneficial obese individuals, as obesity causes a serious increased risk of reaching mortality at a premature age. Unfortunately, weight loss seems to be a struggle for many people who are putting in effort. What many fail to realize is that weight loss is not always as simple as exercise and healthy eating, as many factors may contribute to stubborn fat that simply won’t go away with the traditional weight loss methods.

Working with freelancer sites
At Distilled we have become a dab hand at creating photo stories. Ones which take you on a journey around the world comparing different human facets that give us an interesting insight into different cultures.
In the past we have looked at:
The view out of people’s windows for electronic motor for blinds brand Somfy. What Christmas dinner looks like for artificial Christmas tree brand Balsam Hill. The inside of people’s fridges for the home insurance arm of Admiral.
This post will focus on a case study of our most recent project for Admiral, and how we gathered images of families and their fridges from all around the world using freelancer sites. Obtaining original, royalty-free imagery is something that we have found invaluable in these campaigns and is something that journalists love.
Start with a clear brief for the freelancers Project Overview
We are collecting photos of fridges from around the world.
Can you take a photo of your open fridge, and tell us about the food inside?
Brief Take a high-quality professional photo of the inside of your fridge. Take a photo of an item in your fridge which is a treat. Take a photograph of your family in the kitchen. Answer questions about what is in your fridge and how your family buys food.
Read the full brief here
Venezuela was my favourite submission
When talking to freelancers from other regions, English is often not their first language. You are talking to people all over the world, so you must make sure your brief is as clear as possible. Use short sentences and plain English. It should be concise and absent from colloquialisms I find that once you start a project, the quality of the work submitted is reflective of how good your brief is. Anything that is not immediately clear will soon become clear in submission errors. E.g. Even though I asked for photographs of a family in the kitchen – people misconstrued that as meaning the family had to be next to the fridge – which was not the case and so was made clearer in the brief.
There is almost an art in crafting a brief that is succinct, without omitting important details. Ultimately when done well, it means you get a consistent collection of photos that feel like a series. It also means that if work comes back which isn’t quite right, you have something to reference as a reason for not accepting work. Common problems we have come across in the past include: photos being too dark, the wrong orientation, or not taken straight, etc.
Often, especially when working with people where English is not their first language, use imagery to communicate, instead of words, i.e. show an image of an open fridge. It also helps to use clear bullet points detailing the resolution, format, and what you are and are not expecting to receive. Communicate with your freelancers regularly. If you need them to do work on a specific day, e.g. Christmas Day, check in the day before to make sure they are prepped and ready to go.
The remainder of this post takes on an FAQ-style format. I hope that some, if not all, of the answers, will shed some light on how best to approach freelancer sites in your upcoming projects.
Which freelancer sites do you use? Fiverr Upwork People Per Hour How do you find the freelancers on these sites? For working with a large number of freelancers, often over 100 at any one time, I find Upwork the best platform with the highest quality of submissions. What sort of thing have I used freelancer sites for? 30 people to fill in a survey, and upload a photo – UK specific 120+ people to take photos – worldwide How to avoid getting struck off? Be aware that freelancer sites are always monitoring your activity and correspondence with freelancers. All payment must happen within the freelancer site. All communication must happen in the freelancer site. Do not accept email addresses and bank details from freelancers. Pay respondents in a timely fashion. Some freelance sites, such as Upwork, do not like freelancers to complete work outside of the freelancer site, e.g. on a Google form. However, others, like People Per Hour has no problem with this. How to find the right people? Filter by country. Use avatars to choose gender. Filter by job type, e.g. photographer, copywriter, logo designer etc. Filter by the number of successful jobs freelancer has done in the past. Live chat for help at any time. Good use of the filter system will make your job a lot easier.
What is the success rate? Not all the submissions you get will be good. I found that out of 120 submissions 40 were of very high quality, 40 were passable, 20 poor and 20 did not complete the job or misunderstood the brief entirely. After all, you can not expect much more for $10. You will find that people can misunderstand the brief, which might lead you to tweak the wording as you progress. What should you look out for? People sending you fake submissions in the form of images taken from the internet. Do a reverse image search if you are suspicious. People asking for half the payment upfront, and then disappearing without a trace! Upwork has a limit on the number of people you can hire per day. It is 100 people per day – so be selective with your hiring. Over time certain countries will be easier to fulfil, e.g. Poland, India, and Ukraine, because there are more freelancers based there, whereas places like Iceland or New Zealand may be harder to reach. You will brief some people and then they will fall off the face of the planet. But don’t worry – you won’t lose your money as they have not submitted the work. Just move on and hire someone else. How much should you pay your freelancers? This is especially difficult to gauge when working with freelancers worldwide. $10 may mean a lot more to people in some countries than it does in others. People per hour has a $9 minimum spend. On Fiver people offer their services for as little as $5. Freelancers have the option to ask for more money for a job. You can then decide by viewing their portfolio if you think the increased fee is worth it. For a short survey or a few photographs that should take a respondent no more than 15 minutes, we pay $10. Due to the low value of these mini-jobs the quality is not always amazing, but that is to be expected. Just increase the number of submissions you collect to compensate for the bad ones. How should you manage your relationship with freelancers? Make sure you build a relationship. Be human: use your first name. Check in to see if they have any questions. Check availability ahead of time. Create a spreadsheet of those with the strongest skills by country. Having a database is then useful for future projects. How did it work with the Admiral project? We gathered over 50+ submissions for a project that only required 20 participants, so we could ensure a good spread of high-quality submissions. We hired two participants for each country we wanted to feature. A truly ‘world’ overview should have at least a few submissions per continent. The fridges campaign included: Argentina, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Colombia, Ecuador, England, Finland, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela and Wales. What to look out for in image quality? Don’t accept images with an overhead glare. People cutting out images: in other cultures, sparkly, white cut out images are on trend, so stress that this is not what you are looking for. Things in images that are not right for your client’s brand, e.g. alcohol or risque clothing. If you are showing a world overview there will be disparities in wealth, cleanliness, and even the technology that people have available to take photos with. This should be explained to a client upfront, but you should also be sensitive to these differences. Good image examples
Poor quality image examples
What about permissions and licenses? Contractually, once work is paid for, the rights to that belong to you, the purchaser. If other people besides the freelancer you are working with are in the photo, they must ask anyone featured for permission before photographing them. Mention this in your brief. Any tips on promotion? When outreaching to different countries publications they will want their country to be included in the list. If you have not been able to get a submission from a specific country you can always ask a publication to take their own photo, this worked well for us with Daily Mail Australia. Turn your assets into grids, so there are large assets that essentially include the whole piece to share. Make sure there is a human element to your photos, we connect most with other faces. If you have enough submissions keep some back so journalists have exclusives.
To conclude, yes, it can be a hard slog. But it is also a great way to gather low-cost, original content from a diverse range of people, and we’ve found that this, in turn, fuels some great stories and coverage.

Comparing online education
Coursera
Cost: One course is $29-$100 per year per person and $400 per person per year for unlimited courses.
Timing: Coursera claims the skills taught can be learnt within 4-6 months while you pay the cost of the course. With their online degrees, they have accredited master's degrees that cost also up to $25,000 and take 1-3 years of study. With this timing, you can expect, as they say, a similar experience to University. It doesn't seem to offer any fast track places, however.
Target market: Looking at the target market, I see that Courera is popular throughout the world and most popular in English speaking nations however it does notably have a global presence, for the term "Coursera". They seem to want to offer an education to those that may be disadvantaged in the sense that they don’t have good access to transport or live in rural areas.
edX
Cost: Fees range from $50 to $300 depending on the course.
Timing: In an example case, there's a course on edX named "Pricing Options with Mathematical Models" which has a length of 10 weeks and is 8-10 hours a week. This a typical example of a course on edX.  A further example would be another named "Supply Chain Analytics" which would be 8-12 hours a week for 13 weeks. edX typically has courses that span between 1-3 months long.
Target market: The term "edX" didn't show much worth, as it an acronym used by many companies for many different applications. So I then searched up "edX learning" to get a more specific idea of the company. The term "edX learning" showed a very specific interest in only Canada, the USA, the UK and very much so in India. With related queries showing "machine learning", "deep learning", and competitor sites as the top search queries after that. This shows that there's something unique about edX within the AI sector and programming and is important to note.
Skillshare
Cost: $15 per month with one month free trial with $99 billed if you pay annually, for unlimited classes.
Timing: Skillshare is a video-based platform and features a wide gallery of various videos online. Most of them are from 30 minutes to 2 hours long. Skillshare typically and prefers to squeeze content into a short space of time, giving the user instant rewards from the skillshare video. This it probably why it's one of the most popular platforms.
Target market: Since skillshare is widely publicised I believe that I can simply use the term "Skillshare" to get an idea of his target audience. This showed a global presence with Western and Eastern English speaking countries being the most popular searches of Skillshare. The topics for this search quote are the most interesting over the queries, whereby the terms "Adobe After Effects", "Freelancer", "Master class" and "Sketch" are the most popular. This shows to me that there's an interest in learning these programs and that's possibly something I could take advantage of.
Lynda
Cost: The basic plan costs $25 per month and annually it costs $19.99 per month.
Timing: Lynda like Skillshare offers pay for view scheme, though most of their top courses are longer than Skillshares, thus offering them to a different market. I note that their courses on average range from 3 hours to 6 hours total and are typically richer in detail than Skillshares. This is because they have a professional evaluation scheme instead of it being community driven.
Target market: To get the most accurate search term for this company I've used "Lynda.com" for this. Using the sites URL has shown a good amount of data for me to analyse. Lynda.com is shown to be the most popular in the USA, Canada and Australia. With the top terms showing that "training", "free", "torrent" and "education" are the most popular terms and queries. From here I can see that people are interested in whether the service is free, one thing I've noted is that all the sites try very hard to hide their pricing and costs for the user. Furthermore, the fact that torrenting is a popular term related to the site shows that people see value in the site, but not enough value to spend the money to receive the products.
Treehouse
Cost: $199 per month for a job ready portfolio code degree, $40 per month for the professional package and $20 per month for the basic package.
Timing: Looking at TreeHouse learning I've gone onto their tracks section whereby they've got three track courses shown. They range from a total duration of 3 hours to 20 hours and are set In sections that last typically from 30 mins to 1 hour.
Target market: Teamtreehouse.com is a term that is related to the topics of "Javascript", "Learning - field of study", "courses within education". This shows that coding is of particular interest to the users using treehouse. In the future TreeHouse as recommended by Chris (my lecturer for this module) will be one of my main research interests as I’ll be building a UX site of my own in the future.

Using technology to enhance youth employment in the Middle East and North Africa

Challenges in context
According to an Oxfam report, half a billion people could be pushed into poverty by COVID-19. The International Labour Organisation (ILO), warned that the crisis is expected to wipe out 6.7%  of working hours globally in the second quarter of 2020. The situation has directly hit the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region. Export, travel, transportation and tourism are already in decline.  Many businesses have moved rapidly to shift their work towards remote and digital solutions. New skills are required to address the change in demand for jobs. Quality of jobs has been undermined in the labour market as large numbers of people are becoming unemployed. Women are in the most disadvantaged situation.  The rapid movement toward digitalisation raises questions on the impact on people without access to the internet. Accessing computers and smartphones can be expensive and might not be easily available to everyone, particularly to those living in remote and rural areas. While investing in digital technologies can provide opportunities for young people, it also poses challenges for specific youth segments. For example, in the MENA region, almost 28% of youth, aged between 15-29, fall under the Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) category. Young women are twice as likely as young men to have NEET status globally. The numbers are even higher in the MENA region.  Governments in the region are trying to increase the supply of technological services, but this can take time. For example, Jordan signed a 200 Million USD agreement with the World Bank to improve digital services and access to jobs for youth and unserved communities under the Jordan Youth, Technology and Jobs Project.
Technological solutions
Oxfam’s Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) program, with support from the Danish Arab Partnership Programme (DAPP), supports using technology to foster youth employment in the region. YPE started in 2018 in Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia and Morocco. The objective of the program is to create jobs and help entrepreneurs. This is more important than ever in the current context. YPE contributed to a model of change that linked a large number of unemployed people with different jobs. The YPE programme recently shared it’s learning through a COVID-19 response webinar series. Working with partners, the programme shared its blended approach which strikes the balance between online and offline instruments for improving economic opportunities and enhancing young people’s technical and life skills in target countries. YPE works with two pioneer organisations, Basharsoft in Egypt and Leaders of Tomorrow (LoT) in Jordan. They are primarily focused on using digital solutions for employment and economic opportunities. Both organisations provide digital solutions that aim to enhance economic opportunities and create partnerships through e-learning, digital job matching, e-commerce, coaching and mentoring, as well as access to jobs, internships and personalized career counselling.
Who we worked with
The tech company Basharsoft launched two online platforms (Wuzzuf and Forasna) for linking job seekers and employers. They targeted white and blue-collar job seekers. Both platforms became popular, with about 5 million people registered in its databases, and an average of 1 million visitors per month. Leaders of Tomorrow (LoT) is a social enterprise and hub for social innovation. Over the past decade, LoT founded two online platforms Forsa and Souq Fann. Forsa improves access to the job market for young people in the MENA region, addressing gaps in their education, skills and experience. Whereas Souq Fann is the first e-commerce portal in the region for handicrafts, which aims to support youth and women entrepreneurs from urban and rural areas as well as vulnerable backgrounds to sell their products in Jordan and beyond.
Lessons learnt
Oxfam partners have demonstrated skills in how to use technology effectively for accessing employment in the Covid-19 context. They can become a conduit in sharing learning and developing a network of practitioners and technology users. Daily visitors to the FORSA platform have increased from 50,000 daily visitors to almost 150,000 per day during the lockdown period. New ways of work are growing rapidly, such as freelance jobs, remote work, and part-time jobs. Young women and men in the region need a good knowledge of using digital tools and digital literacy. However, decent jobs should be advocated for, as this form of work often comes with increased vulnerability.
Use of technology proved to be an empowering tool for women who could apply it effectively within the home environment. This is useful in the MENA region, where mobility, conservative social norms and safety concerns prevent women from participating in the labour market. Forsa and Souq Fan provided an opportunity during lockdown for young women to invest their time developing skills through distance learning and engage in producing handicrafts and other products to be sold online. We found that the number of visitors to Forsa’s motivational content course increased from 1,500 before the lockdown to more than 29,000 visitors during the lockdown period. Besides, 271 new products were added to Souq Fan and 4 new vendors joined the platform. However, amid the COVID-19 situation, sales and income generated through the platform have been reduced considerably due to limited market demand as well as restrictions imposed by lockdown measures. We should still be aware that technology can also further solidify conservative social norms as women could be seen as staying at home and still engaging in earning some income.
Using advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning improves the analysis of gathered data for accurate job matching. Online job-matching portals help in generating insightful data for bridging skills gaps. Generating data on demand and supply, provide a clear understanding of market gaps and allows partners and learning solution providers to bridge skills among job seekers and employers. This data could also help policymakers devise regulatory measures that could stimulate the job market further.
Technology can provide an equal and fair opportunity for young people to enhance their capacities. E-learning platforms can provide youth with relevant content and access to skills training, reading materials, and educational videos to build their skills. Digital solutions can provide affordable learning experiences that vulnerable young people may not have direct access to. Yet, development organizations and donors still need to consider the most vulnerable youth that might not have access to an internet connection or adequate devices. Therefore, a focus on making online activities accessible is always of primary importance.
Collaboration between online job portals and organizations that use offline modalities for job matching can provide wider opportunities for job seekers to enhance partnerships in the employment ecosystem. Linking job fairs and online job matching portals can further widen opportunities. In December 2019, Basharsoft conducted its first paperless employment fair through the support of YPE in Egypt with 2,178 job seekers in attendance.
Donors and international organizations should rely on local knowledge and engage with existing programs, private companies and social enterprises. YPE partners have recommended investing efforts to scale-up and support existing digital and tech initiatives and platforms rather than starting from scratch.
Amid a rapidly growing digital sphere, organizations and online platforms should pay attention to data protection risks and ensure the utmost safety of their users. Job matching platforms require a lot of personal information from users that needs to be safely stored. Platforms must invest in data security to minimize any possibility of data breaches. In addition, online platforms should seek legal support from professional lawyers to adhere to local and international data protection legislation that has been ratified by governments or others, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by the European Union (EU).
Contributions and ideas from our partners represented by Ameer Sherif and Dr. Sami Hourani together with Oxfam teams led by Youmna Al Khattam in Egypt and Rula Aburub in Jordan have inspired the lessons learnt.

Comparing Hybrid vs Native Mobile App Development, Which is better?
For those of you who want to build a mobile app for your business, you may have come across some different options during your preliminary research.
You realized that not all development methods are the same and you have a couple of different ways to approach development.
Hybrid vs. native.
Which one is better?
Well, you’ve come to the right place.
As an industry expert who has built both types of mobile apps and helped other people do the same, I can give you the information that you need to decide for yourself.
The truth is, there’s not a black and white answer here.
Since everyone has a unique situation, you’ll have to decide for yourself.
First, let’s me explain exactly what these two different terms mean.
Native apps are developed for a specific operating system.
Therefore, they follow certain guidelines that ultimately enhance the user experience.
People who use the app can typically navigate through the app faster.
It’s also easier for native apps to access some of the built in components of the user’s device, such as the camera, GPS, or contacts list.
Hybrid apps look and function the same way as a native app, but it’s built on the web using JavaScript and HTML5.
They can work on multiple platforms since they are written using just one programming language.
So before you start building your app, you’ll have to decide which one of these two routes you’re going to take.
It’s an important decision that can impact how consumers react to their experience using your app.
Hybrid apps have been around for a while.
But only recent technology has allowed them to advance from both the developer and user perspectives.
I’ll go into some greater detail about both types of apps to help you make an educated decision.
Drawbacks of native apps
So earlier I briefly discussed some of the positive aspects of developing a native app.
With that in mind, there are definitely some drawbacks of going this route as well.
Here are some of the negative associations with native apps.
Only work on one operating system
When you’re building a native app, you have to decide which operating system you’re going to launch on.
You can develop an Android app for the Google Play Store or build an iOS app for the Apple App Store.
So if you want to launch a native app on both platforms, you’ll have to develop the entire thing twice.
That’s right.
You’ll have to start from scratch with coding and development if you plan to launch on the Android platform after building an iOS app.
With all of the time, effort, and money involved with app development – it can end up taking years for you to get your native app launched and functioning on both platforms.
It’s a tough way to get a fast return on your significant investment that way, but we’ll talk more about the costs associated with development later.
If you’re forced to make a decision between the two platforms, it could make or break the success of your app.
Why?
There are distinct differences in the demographic characteristics between iOS and Android users.
Launching on a platform that doesn’t speak to your target audience can drastically impact your customer acquisition cost.
If that number is too high, it could put your company in jeopardy of going out of business.
To minimize that risk, you’ll have to do extensive marketing research to figure out which operating system is better for your brand’s image.
It’s not a simple process.
Takes a long time to code
There’s only one way to build native apps.
Coding.
Do you know how to write code for mobile apps?
Most people don’t.
So you’ve got some different options to consider here as well.
You can take the time and learn how to code yourself.
How hard can it be, right?
While I admire your ambition, I wouldn’t suggest this route.
It’s not rocket science, but it’s not easy either.
Learning this new skill will take a long time and then actually writing the code will take even longer.
Plus if you learn the basics of coding and want to develop the app yourself, it’s going to be pretty limited and definitely have some bugs and glitches.
Trust me – I know from experience.
So if you’re not going to code the app yourself, you’ll need to hire someone to do it for you.
But that’s not an overnight process.
Whether you hire a freelance developer, small development shop, or large mobile/ android app development UK company, the code will take them a long time to write as well.
Here’s an example from the Codementor.
Based on their estimations, it could take up to 985 hours to write code for an app that’s similar to Instagram.
Assuming the person or company you hire spends 8 hours a day for 5 days a week working on this (which they won’t, because they have other projects to do as well), it would take about 25 weeks to finish.
This estimation doesn’t include any administrative dashboard features or UI/UX designs, which would bring the total estimated time up to 1220 hours.
That’s over 30 weeks to develop.
Again, that’s assuming your developer works solely on your app during the entire duration of their work week, which is highly unlikely.
In reality, this would probably take closer to a year to get built.
And that’s just on one platform.
This is definitely not an ideal scenario for everyone.
This timeline can obviously vary based on the complexity of your app design, which means it could take even longer to code.
Require complicated maintenance
Launching an app isn’t over once development is finished.
You’ve got to maintain the app to keep it functional and give users an optimal experience.
As we saw in that graphic earlier, negative experiences with an app’s performance can cause nearly half of users to use the app less frequently and 34% of people to switch to another app completely.
So you can’t neglect regular app maintenance.
The problem with this maintenance is that it’s not easy, especially if you have a more complicated app.
We just talked about how long it takes to code an app, well how do you think changes get made?
With code.
So this takes even more time if the code is complex.
It will leave your app more vulnerable to glitches that last longer because they can’t get found and fixed right away.
Take a look at how much it will cost you to perform maintenance on your native app in just the first year, on average.
So the burden of dumping money into your app isn’t over after development either.
Almost 20% of native apps cost over $25,000 in maintenance in the first year of the launch date.
Numbers that high can’t be ignored.
The reason for this is because of the complexity involved in the process.
Complicated and specialized code languages
Let’s piggyback off of our last couple points.
Building a native app also requires you to learn specialized code languages.
What do I mean by this?
Basically, the majority of the terms you’re going to hear throughout the process are words and phrases that you’ve never heard before – unless you’re an experienced developer.
This complicates things even more.
It creates a language barrier between the developer and the client (you).
There ends up being a learning curve for you to even be able to communicate your wants and needs to the developer.
This also goes back to what I was saying earlier about learning how to code the app yourself.
You’ve got to add a new arsenal of terms to your vocabulary before you get started.
EXPENSIVE
If you look back at everything we just talked about regarding the pitfalls of native apps, they are all leading towards one common denominator.
Money.
And lots of it.
Building a native app is expensive.
There’s really no other way to put it.
If you’re hiring a developer in North America, you can expect to pay around $150 per hour for their services.
That’s $150 per hour for what could be over a year of development.
Not cheap.
Plus, we just saw that regular maintenance of your app could cost up to an additional $25,000 per year.
While major corporations may be able to afford this, these figures just aren’t reasonable for most people and small businesses.
Furthermore, these numbers are limited to just one operating system.
So you can expect to pay even more than that if you’re planning to develop, launch, and maintain an app on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
If you thought that building your first app on the iOS platform was expensive, just wait until you go through the Android process.
Android apps cost about 30% more to develop than iOS apps.
That doesn’t mean you can just ignore the Android software because of the price.
While the split between Android and iOS mobile users in the United States is relatively even, Android dominates the global market share, owning about 80% to 90% of users.
So if you’re planning to develop a native app, you can expect to pay big bucks.
Benefits of Hybrid apps
While hybrid apps aren’t perfect, there is plenty of upside to developing an app this way.
Hybrid apps shine in the areas where we saw some pitfalls with native app development.
Here are some more details about this method.
Work on every operating system
Unlike its native counterparts, hybrid apps work on both iOS and Android operating systems.
Which means you won’t have to build the same app twice if you want your app to be available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
This is huge.
We just finished discussing the importance of being on both platforms.
Now you can reach users with different demographics from all over the world.
You won’t have to worry about the marketing nightmare of trying to figure out which operating system to develop first based on your target audience.
Both can get launched simultaneously.
This is essential for your company’s brand awareness strategy.
Ultimately, your availability on both platforms will make it easy for your app to grow and prosper.
You’ll get more downloads, which can translate to an increase in revenue.
Those downloads will also help get you more ratings and reviews on each respective app store, which all impact your search ranking.
It’s a cycle.
The higher your search ranking, the more downloads you’ll get.
Quick to code, build, and test
Developing a hybrid app can get done in just a fraction of the time it takes to build a native app.
That’s because the coding isn’t complicated and it’s completely web based.
You don’t even need to learn how to code if you want to build a hybrid app on your own.
The hybrid building process is so easy that one person can do it.
Rather than learning how to code, you just need some practice getting acclimated to the platform you’re using to the build the app.
Hybrid apps are also ideal in terms of testing different versions of your app.
Because there’s no complicated coding involved, you can easily change design elements and get beta testers to see which components enhance the user experience.
Worst case scenario is that you find our your app isn’t great based on the beta testing feedback.
But you didn’t have to spend too much time or money on this, so it’s not the end of the world.
You can just make adjustments and move on.
Easy to make design changes and updates
Earlier I explained how coding makes it difficult for native app developers to make changes and updates.
Well, it’s the complete opposite with hybrid apps.
Since everything is on the same platform, you won’t have to do things twice for each operating system whenever you want to make changes.
This also benefits the user.
Here’s why.
Let’s say an app has a glitch, bug, or needs some kind of enhancement.
This happens more often than you might think.
If it’s a native app, the user won’t see the changes unless they update the newest version via the app store.
So if the user isn’t someone who regularly updates the apps on their device, they’ll continue to experience problems and won’t have the newest version of your app unless they manually download it.
This can cause customer satisfaction problems and negatively impact your bottom line.
None of this will happen when you make updates with a hybrid app.
If you make an update on a page that gets loaded from a server, the user will get the update as soon as open and connect to your app on their device.
This holds true for phones and tablets on both iOS and Android platforms.
Everyone already knows the coding languages
You won’t need to use an IT dictionary to understand the basic concepts of building a hybrid app.
Since you’re not doing any complicated coding, everything is laid out in terms that you can understand.
This makes it easier for the average person without a technical background to build a hybrid app.
Here’s what I mean.
Let’s take a look at one of the first steps you’ll go through if you’re building a hybrid app on the BuildFire platform.
Is there anything on here that you don’t understand?
No.
All of the steps are in clear English with common terminology.
Just follow the simple instructions on the screen to proceed and watch your app get built in real time.
You can work within a pre-designed template and make any customized changes, so your app is unique.
That way the final product will look exactly the way you imaged it.
AFFORDABLE
You can build a hybrid app for just a fraction of the cost of a native app.
It’s not necessary to hire an expensive developer to write your code.
Hybrid apps can be built by you or someone else on your staff.
Remember the average cost to develop a native app in North America that we saw earlier?
Let me refresh your memory.
It was $150 per hour.
The cost to develop a hybrid app through a platform like BuildFire starts at just $59 per month.
I think it’s safe to say that this is a much more reasonable and realistic figure for you.
At the bare minimum, it’s at least worth a try.
It’s not like it’s an investment that’s going to tie up all of your company’s capital.
What’s best for you?
At the end of the day, the decision is completely yours.
I can’t decide what the best choice is for your company.
There are definitely some positive aspects of developing a native app.
But with that said, there are just so many pitfalls that come with it.
Native apps only work on one operating system, so you’re forced to choose between iOS and Android.
Sure, you can develop one of each.
But the cost of one is pricey enough. Imagine the financial burden of going through that twice.
Unlike native apps, hybrid development is much quicker.
There’s no complicated coding process or complex languages to learn.
It’s easier to identify, modify, and install updates as well.
Users can see these updates without having to download the newest version of your app on their devices. I hope this helps.

25 New Year’s Resolution Ideas For 2020
What do you want to accomplish this year? What are your dreams, goals, desires? For the most part, when people are thinking up New Year’s resolution ideas, they tend to lean towards 4 main life categories that they want to improve on:
Money
Travel
Learning
Health
When it comes to achieving goals, it’s important to write them down and have a clear vision for what you really want. Saying “I want more money this year”, or “I want to lose weight” is great, but it’s best to be specific about your goals.
Write down exactly how much more money you want to earn, and how much weight you actually want to lose. What would that feel like? What would you do with more money? Why do you want to lose weight?
The more detailed and specific you are about your New Year’s resolutions, the more likely you are to achieve them.
In this article, I’ll share my top 25 New Year’s resolution ideas and tools to help you earn more money, travel more (for less), learn new skills and boost your overall health.
Note: This article has been updated for 2020 and includes more New Year’s resolution ideas to help you lead a happier and healthier lifestyle. Here’s to a great year ahead!

The Airbnb Scam Travellers Need To Know About
Become an Uber Driver
This is one of the best ways to earn some cash on the side. If you work during the week, you can pick up shifts on the weekend. If you work during the day, you can drive in the evenings. You are your own boss and choose your own schedule. And obviously, the more driving you do, the more money you will make.
On average, in the United States, Uber drivers earn between $8 – $11 / hour after accounting for driving costs. If you live in New York, Uber drivers earn around $29 / hour! The amount of money you’ll earn really depends on which city you live in, which hours of the day you are driving, how many passengers you pick up per hour, etc.

Create Your Own Online Course
Online courses are popular right now. We ourselves have created two online courses, which include video tutorials and downloadables. For those of you who want to easily set up a course and teach the world a particular skill, Teachable may be the platform for you.
Basically, if you are knowledgable in any topic (art, tech, culinary, design, etc.) you can create professional online courses and sell them to your students. Teachable makes it incredibly easy to create, edit, upload and sell. It’s the all-in-one course builder.

New Year’s Resolution Ideas: How To Travel More
As soon as the new year approaches, everyone starts searching for the cheapest countries to visit, or maybe the cheapest European countries to visit. And for those of you from the northern hemisphere who want to escape the cold, you’re probably searching for the best places to travel in January. No matter when you travel, or where, these tools will help you see the world…for less.

House Sitting
I can’t recommend house sitting and pet sitting enough. In my opinion, there’s no better way to receive free accommodation around the world. If you like to travel and love animals, then this is one of the top New Year’s resolution ideas for you.
Most of the house sitting jobs are also pet sitting gigs, meaning you’ll be taking care of a cat, dog, bird, fish, etc. while living in someone’s home. For homeowners, having someone take care of their home and pets is great as it means their fur baby won’t have to be in a kennel while they are away, and the house will be safe and well taken care of.
You’ll be able to live like a local, receive free accommodation and have a furry friend. Typically, a vehicle will be available for your use, and in some cases you will also receive a salary.
When looking for a house sitting job, you’ll probably notice that most of the available sits are in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and New Zealand.
Having said that, we’ve only ever pet sat in tropical destinations — Barbados, Grenada, and Costa Rica. Plus, we’ve turned down offers in Italy, Qatar, Thailand, Mexico, and Guatemala. House sitting jobs are available around the world.
Click here to see the available homes and learn more about the most popular house sitting website online. Trusted Housesitters is the only site we’ve ever used and we highly recommend it.

Travel Hacking
Another epic way to receive free travel this year (or discounted travel) is to learn about travel hacking. Some people don’t like the word “hack” as they think it means to scam or cheat, but in reality, there’s nothing illegal about travel hacking. It’s a great way to get free or discounted flights, hotels, car rentals and more.
Travel hacking can be done by using credit card points, or just various tips and tricks.
For Americans, you have some incredible credit cards at your disposal which offer high points when you purchase various items. The most popular card is the Chase Sapphire, which offers 50,000 points if you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months of having the card. That’s $625 in free travel when booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
There are many more pros to having this card in your wallet. Click here for a full review.
For those of us from Canada, our credit card options aren’t so great! But, after a few years of using our credit card, we were finally able to book return flights from Grenada to Barbados, and from Grenada to Ecuador, using just our credit card points. It may have taken us a while, but the free flights were worth it.

Opt For Uber
Rideshare programs are a great way to save money on transportation. Plus, with companies like Uber and Lyft, there’s no exchange of cash or debit cards, you don’t have to stand on the side of the road and hail a cab, you can follow your driver on the map to see where they are, and it’s much more affordable than taxis.
If you use the code: dariecesue, you’ll get your first ride with Uber for free.
After that, you can invite your friends to use Uber (you’ll see how to do it on the app) and you’ll receive another complimentary ride.
Not only can you receive free rides and get from point a to point b much cheaper than with traditional methods, but (as I listed above) if you become an Uber driver, you can earn some cash on the side. Click here for details.
Choose Cheap Countries
This may seem obvious, but if you want to travel more this year, start with choosing the cheapest countries to visit. If your funds are limited, you’ll want to travel somewhere that your money will stretch farther.
Destinations in Asia, Central America, Eastern Europe and parts of South America are known for being very affordable — especially for those from counties with strong currencies (USA, Europe, UK).
If your budget won’t allow you to fly, stick to your home country! Explore your own city or a neighbouring state. Take a road trip rather than a flight. But keep in mind that you can often find very affordable flights if you book in advance, use flight comparison websites or take a trip in the off-season.

FAM / Press Trips
FAM (Familiarization) Trips and Press Trips are for those in the travel industry who are reviewing destinations, hotels, cruises, tour companies, etc. and writing about their findings. As travel bloggers, we’ve been on numerous press trips, which offered us free travel and in most cases, a salary.
If you want to learn how to become a travel blogger, this is one of the perks you can look forward to. Enjoy 5-star luxury, business class flights, unique events, awesome activities and fantastic food. In exchange, you write about the experience on your travel blog, make videos for your YouTube channel and share on your social media accounts.

Workaway
If you’re looking for New Year’s resolution ideas that involve volunteering and exchanges, then this is for you. Workaway is a cultural exchange company that has been around since 2002. It promotes homestays, farm stays, working holidays, volunteering, language learning, and cultural exchanges.
Essentially, you volunteer your time helping out on a family farm, at a school, in a village, at an eco-lodge, at an animal sanctuary, etc. and in exchange for working a few hours a day, you receive free accommodation and food.
This is an incredible way to meet new people and put your skills to good use around the world. It’s what being a responsible traveller is all about! Click here to learn more about Workaway.
Update 2020: We recently interviewed Erin who worked in Montenegro with the Workaway program. Check out this post to learn some insider information on what it’s like to live, work and travel abroad with Workaway.
WWOOFing
WWOOFing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) is another program where you help out around the world, but these jobs are on organic fruit and vegetable farms, wineries, dairy farms or other remote plots of land. You’ll have to pay 20 GBP ($25) to sign up as a WWOOFer, and that membership fee is valid for one year.
Your stay on the farm is free in exchange for you helping out each day. Click here to learn more about WWOOFing around the world.
Apply For a Working Holiday Visa
Update 2020: Many countries around the world offer a Working Holiday Visa for those who are a certain age (typically 18 – 30 or 35 years old). This working holiday concept allows visitors to work in the country for a certain period of time, without having to get a traditional working visa — which can be very difficult to obtain. The program is in place for young people to be able to experience new cultures while earning an income as well.
Not all countries offer a working holiday program, but if you’re from Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Canada, there are many options available to you. For US citizens, since the United States only offers a working holiday visa to 5 countries, you won’t have as many options as countries that have more reciprocal agreements in place.
With a working holiday, you’ll be able to travel to a new country, learn about new cultures, live abroad and make money while doing so. If you’re eligible, this is a great way to travel more in the new year.

New Year’s Resolution Ideas: Learning New Things
If you’re not learning something new each day, or trying new things, then life can become pretty dull. In the new year, it’s time to get your brain working and learn something new! There are many ways to do so, here’s a list of my favourites:
Learn a New Skill With Skillshare
This platform is a great tool for those wanting to join a virtual class and learn something new.
This is Skillshare’s motto: “Our purpose is to make the new economy an open meritocracy, where the skills and expertise needed to succeed are available for anyone willing to learn them.”
That’s something we can definitely get behind! Gone are the days of hefty University and College fees, or needing to have certain grades to attend school, these days, people are learning information and skills online.
Of course, you aren’t going to learn how to become a doctor or get your law degree, but if you are interested in knowing more about animation, film production, graphic design, music, accounting, finance, marketing, parenting, web development, crafts and culinary, then you’ll find those classes on Skillshare.
There are many free workshops and classes, but for more advanced ones you’ll need to pay a fee. Sign up for Skillshare and receive a 1 month trial for free.
Learn a New Language
For travellers especially, learning a new language is one of the New Year’s resolution ideas I would recommend. When visiting a new country, getting around without speaking some of the local language can be a difficult task. Between phrasebooks, online translators and hand gestures, it can be hard to get your point across.
If you’re planning a trip to a particular region, or if you just want to learn something new, why not practice a new language?
Italki is the leader in online language classes. All you do is sign up, choose a teacher that suits your needs and enjoy 1-on-1 lessons at a time that works for you.
What’s great is that you can choose where your teacher is from, the hourly rate you want to spend, and whether they are a native speaker, or are fluent.
Another great feature is that you set the program to choose which languages your teacher must speak (for us, it would be English), then from there you choose which language you want to learn (Arabic, Japanese, Spanish, French, etc.). Some teachers don’t speak English, so for us, it might be difficult to learn Japanese if it were fully immersive.
Click here to learn more about Italiki.
Learn From YouTube
The news is everywhere. Every time we turn on the TV, open the newspaper (do people still do that?!) or open up our Facebook feeds, there it is, the negative news. There’s not much positivity (and in some cases, truth) when it comes to the news these days, so why not spend some of your time browsing independent media such as YouTube?
With YouTube, you can enjoy the inspiring and informational TED Talks or hear about the world’s headlines from hilarious comedians (John Oliver, Russell Howard, Seth Meyers and Trevor Noah are our favourites).
For marketing and media strategies, Pat Flynn is probably our favourite channel, although GaryVee is one of the most popular. YouTube and podcasts are excellent outlets for learning about the world and getting some inspiration and motivation to try something new.
Learn From a Local
Whether you’re travelling or not, there’s always more you can learn about your home country or the countries you visit. Joining a tour with locals offers you the best chance of learning about neighbourhoods, history, and architecture. We always join walking tours and love getting an insider’s perspective on the destinations we visit.
Even if you’re from the city, there’s a lot you can find out by joining a tour with a knowledgable guide. But, rather than just joining a cookie-cutter tour, try meeting up with a local to experience the city through their eyes.
Withlocals is an excellent platform for connecting travellers and locals for a unique and rewarding experience. Each “tour” is private and every guide offers a different trip, while showing you their highlights, top restaurants, off-track spots, must-sees, and hidden gems of the city they know so well.
Choose the type of tour you’re interested in (highlights, hidden gems, biking, food, etc.) and then choose the local that you think is the best fit for you. Your guide will then create a trip that suits your needs based on timing, how you want to get around, what you like to drink, sights you want to see, etc.
It doesn’t matter how many books you read, or movies you watch, when you actually speak with a local, it’s amazing how much you can learn.
Update 2020: Airbnb Experiences are becoming very popular. These days, if you have something to offer guests to your city/country, you can apply to be a guide on Airbnb. There’s a rating and review system (and you must have actually been on the tour in order to leave a review), meaning you’ll be able to choose top local hosts and guides. The experiences available are really unique — perfume creations in Paris, making pasta with grandma in her home just outside of Rome, or going on an “underground” tour of Barcelona to learn about the nitty-gritty of the city. There are some really amazing experiences on the platform, that are unlike any regular tour. Click here to search for a fun and memorable experience in the destination you plan to visit.
New Year’s Resolution Ideas: For Healthy Living
Whether you want to lose weight or not, living a healthier lifestyle is always a good thing. Eating healthy and doing some exercise doesn’t have to be a challenge. For those of you who can’t stand going to the gym, or who always purchase a gym pass and then never use it, here are some New Year’s resolution ideas for how to be healthier this yearn — that you’ll actually do.
Walk, Don’t Drive
Hopping in your car and heading down the road is what most people are used to doing. But unless you plan to stock up on numerous bags of groceries, and the destination isn’t 2 hours away, why not walk there instead? Driving or taking public transport is easier, sure, but if you want to get some exercise then consider walking to get from point a to point b.
This is especially true when travelling. Seeing all of the “in-between bits” of a destination is what it’s about. Walk aimlessly around the cities you’re visiting, or join a walking tour. After all that walking, you won’t feel guilty for indulging in that pizza in Rome, or that perfectly cooked rib-eye steak in Argentina.
Speaking of meat…
Try To Eat Less Meat
I’m not a vegetarian (tried that for a year and it wasn’t for me) and I’m not a vegan, but I do believe that we as a society eat way too much meat. And in particular, red meat (beef). With so many plant-based options out there, it’s quite easy to have meatless Mondays…and Thursdays. Try substituting meat for beans or tofu — Asian recipes are especially good for this.
Or, eat more fish and chicken rather than lamb and beef. If you eat less red meat, not only will you be helping the environment (livestock plays one of the largest roles in damaging greenhouse gas emissions), but your heart and waistline will thank you as well.

Practice Yoga
Yoga is one of the best exercise programs you can do. It’s good for your mind, body and soul. But, purchasing a yoga pass and finding time to go to the studio makes it less likely that you’ll follow through on your New Year’s resolution idea of doing more yoga. Luckily, you can do yoga from the comfort of your home — for free.
Yoga is great for strengthening and lengthening your muscles, toning and losing weight. Plus, it helps to calm your mind and ease stresses. As a bonus, this sort of exercise is easy to do anywhere. All you need is a mat.
You can find numerous free yoga programs on YouTube, or you can find free classes on Skillshare.
Prepare Meals Ahead Of Time
One of the main reasons that we all find ourselves snacking or eating unhealthy meals is because we don’t want to take the time to prepare a healthy lunch or dinner. I’ve found that if we prepare food ahead of time and have it ready to go in containers, we’re more likely to eat well.
If you drink smoothies in the morning, have all of your fruit and vegetables cut up and portioned into little bags. Put them into the freezer and each morning all you need to do is grab one out, toss it in the blender, add whatever else you want and mix. Washing and cutting the vegetables and fruit is the time-consuming part.
For dinners and lunches, making a large batch of food and then freezing it is an easy way to have grab n’ go meals. Make a big pot of spaghetti sauce, chili, stew, soup, etc. and then all you need to do is heat it up and maybe cook some pasta or rice.
Try to prepare a week’s worth of food and you’ll find it easier to eat healthy this year.
Eat Local and Natural
What happened to eating real food?! These days, if you look at any labels, there are all sorts of ingredients that most people have never even heard of — not to mention, all of the fillers and added sugar. In my opinion, when it comes to New Year’s Resolution ideas, clean eating is at the top.
This means cutting out sugars and processed foods and replacing them with fruits, vegetables, proteins and whole grains. Simple as that. When you go to buy a can of black beans, turn the can over and read the ingredients. If there is anything other than black beans, water and salt, check another brand.
I also recommend utilizing the ingredients around you and eating locally. For us living in the Caribbean, we have some fantastic fruits, vegetables, and herbs with health benefits (soursop, morenga, turmeric, coconut), and we try to incorporate them into our daily diet.
Enjoy Less Screen Time
These days we’re all more connected than ever. I’m not sure when it became socially acceptable to scroll through Facebook when hanging out with friends, or to text with other people while on a dinner date, but that’s the way it is these days.
When you’re out with friends, make it a rule that whoever reaches for their phone first has to buy the next round of drinks. When you have people over at your house, put all of their phones into a box right away, not to be used until they leave. Limit the amount of time you can access social media accounts using apps like this one.
An overload of media increases risks of social anxiety, depression and stress. Give yourself a detox this year.
Less time with your nose stuck in your phone, while scrolling aimlessly through your Facebook newsfeed, means more time actually interacting with those around you. Without using your phone for a crutch when you’re bored, just sit there with your thoughts for a few minutes. Imagine the ideas you could come up with.
These days we all want (and in many cases, need) our phones. This year, try to include using it less as one of your New Year’s resolution ideas.
Put These New Year’s Resolution Ideas Into Action
I hope that this list of New Year’s resolutions gave you some ideas for ways to achieve your goals for the new year. Start by choosing a few of the items on this list. Setting too many goals might make you feel overwhelmed, so start with a couple and work your way up from there. But most importantly, have fun with the resolutions. Here’s to a happy and healthy new year!

That doesn’t have to be you. No matter how assured you would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly be to your platform or your consideration to side, you unruffled should know relating to the long-established causes throughout the inspire of web web page crashes and what you would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly attain to insulate your self in opposition to them.
1. Deletion of Extreme Sources
Everytime you occur to by accident delete one factor out of your wordpress state of affairs, the outcomes will virtually undoubtedly be fast and doubtlessly disastrous. Generally, web web page owners would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly by accident delete one factor take care of:
A plugin that’s extreme to web web page performance
Up up to now information
Net swear on-line consumer profiles
Weblog posts and articles
Photographs, logos, and theme information
Sooner than you undertake any web web page upkeep, it’s crucial to inspire up all of the information you’re eliminating or enhancing. It doesn’t matter how minor they could per probability per probability virtually undoubtedly additionally look like. If one factor you alter breaks your web web page, you don’t want all of the items offline for an prolonged length whereas you establish methods to restore the lacking sources.
Defend these redundant backups after your state of affairs has lengthy gone dwell over once more, upright in case a ache vegetation up and it’s appreciable to roll one element, and even all of the web web page, inspire to a earlier iteration.
In 2016, this correct ache prompted a UK-based completely largely cyber web internet hosting firm to show their purchasers, and a substantial fragment of the accumulate itself, to “catastrophic error.” The perpetrator? Unintended file deletion staunch by way of routine server cleanup.
2. Errors With Plugins
Everytime you occur to’re accustomed to wordpress, you already know “there’s a plugin for that.” Plugins allow worthwhile performance, nevertheless you would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly’t essentially vouch for his or her builders. They may per probability additionally as quickly as rapidly attribute in methods by which wrestle with each different or a separate attribute, inflicting web web page concerns, even virtually undoubtedly web web page outages.
Little question one in every of your duties is to sparsely vet the instrument builders you suppose into your digital ecosystem. Your different job, for people who suspect a wordpress plugin wrestle has prompted your web web page to smash, is to ticket the ache to its supply.
Consider in ideas taking out a pen and a notepad and recording when, and in what expose, you carried out the subsequent initiatives not too long ago:
Put in an odd plugin
Up up to now an current plugin
Made modifications to the state of affairs theme
Edited a PHP file
Plugins change even the core features of your web web page as quickly as rapidly. Make sure that you simply simply resolve plugins sparsely to inspire away from concerns and know the association to methodically troubleshoot factors that attain occur.
3. Your Area Identify Has Expired
Area title expiration is an extremely long-established supply of wordpress web web page outages. The upright information is, it’s additionally one amongst the highest to forestall and restore.
We don’t know why so many web web page owners neglect this section of their web web page. You don’t possess the phrases, nevertheless you possess that specific mixture of them. Your space title is how prospects procure you, and is one amongst essentially the most conventional branding workouts you’ll ever undertake.
Nonetheless it indubitably requires routine upkeep take care of the alternative sides of your web web page. Log into wherever you acquire your space and be apparent your contact information and cost method are up to date. Everytime you occur to’ve modified any of this information, otherwise you don’t keep “auto-renew” turned on, your space would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly lapse, rendering your state of affairs unreachable.
4. Website site visitors Surges
There are site visitors surges you would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly opinion for, take care of Gloomy Friday and Cyber Monday stAMPedes, and some you upright can’t. All individuals hopes their advertising and marketing swear materials goes viral. Nonetheless can your web web page server deal with the sudden inflow of site visitors you’re crossing your fingers for?
wordpress is quick to remind its prospects that the platform is absolutely as unparalleled as a result of the {hardware} working it. Firms that haven’t considered processor and community speeds would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly procure themselves unprepared for a spike in site visitors.
What would possibly per probability had been a account-breaking gross sales day would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly peter out into nothing for people who don’t dwell up to your needs and develop as a minimum a measure of future-proofing into your server and restore picks.
5. Host Availability Problems
Generally, wordpress outages consequence from errors on the consumer side. Nonetheless on uncommon occasions, the host itself would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly talents a ache that renders consumer web sites unreachable. In different circumstances, take care of 1 favourite incident from summer time 2019, the outcomes have been equal sides absorbing and disruptive.
In July, web sites hosted on the wordpress VIP Sprint platform started serving default themes, largely that includes cactuses and succulents, in dwelling of customized themes chosen by the shoppers. The outcomes didn’t “hotfoot viral” so unparalleled – they mysteriously propagated staunch by way of the accumulate.
VIP Sprint prospects virtually undoubtedly didn’t keep too some ways to forestall this one. Nonetheless wordpress outfitted short-timeframe selections and vital instructions as they labored on a restore. You don’t want prospects completely thrown for a succulent loop after they speak over alongside along with your state of affairs.
So be aware to be aware the linked PR and tech toughen teams on Twitter and different platforms, or procure out relating to the quickest ability to obtain updates about ongoing factors and resolutions.
6. Unintended Vitality Off
Information facilities keep emergency-energy-off (EPO) switches. These are as quickly as rapidly for serving to comprise fires and mitigating harm from emergencies. Nonetheless if anybody by accident invokes the EPO staunch by way of business hours, your web web page would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly tumble out of existence.
Generally, emergency energy-offs don’t even keep an influence on an entire information middle. In 2017, Amazon’s cyber web internet hosting merchandise and suppliers skilled an outage that took down many excessive-profile web sites. They at closing traced the ache inspire to an worker who “took extra servers offline than meant” staunch by way of a debugging session.
The ache of unintended energy-offs isn’t odd to wordpress-hosted web sites. Nonetheless wordpress customers keep the ability to inspire up their full state of affairs independently throughout the cloud, the utilization of paid third-occasion devices furthermore to free-to-use selections. Incandescent you would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly tumble inspire to a restore level for people who attain lose vitality out of the blue is a potent supply of peace of ideas.
Don’t Let Downtime Recount You Down
Whether or not or not you’re a wordpress consumer or not, you now keep the subsequent understanding of web web page outages and the steps you would possibly per probability virtually undoubtedly bewitch to forestall and procure successfully from them.

The inside of people's fridges for the home insurance arm of Admiral.
This post will focus on a case study of our most recent project for Admiral, and how we gathered images of families and their fridges from all around the world using freelancer sites. Obtaining original, royalty-free imagery is something that we have found invaluable in these campaigns and is something that journalists love.
Start with a clear brief for the freelancers
Project Overview
We are collecting photos of fridges from around the world.
Can you take a photo of your open fridge, and tell us about the food inside?
Brief
Take a high-quality professional photo of the inside of your fridge.
Fiverr
Upwork
People Per Hour
How do you find the freelancers on these sites?
For working with a large number of freelancers, often over 100 at any one time, I find Upwork the best platform with the highest quality of submissions.
What sort of thing have I used freelancer sites for?
30 people to fill in a survey, and upload a photo – UK specific
120+ people to take photos – worldwide
How to avoid getting struck off?
Things in images that are not right for your client's brand, e.g. alcohol or risque clothing.
If you are showing a world overview there will be disparities in wealth, cleanliness, and even the technology that people have available to take photos with. This should be explained to a client upfront, but you should also be sensitive to these differences.
