Live recordings can be seen as a quick way to make a buck or a trick to get out of contract obligations, although that view is too reductive. They are the most important documents of musicians, since they can show the potential, the end and the renaissance. Of course, they can also present us with the chaos. Two great cases for the latter are Rock 'n' Roll Animal and Lou Reed Live by, hm, Lou Reed. They both covered the same concert with one taking one half of it and with another displaying another. Lou Reed is a man who does not give a damn on them, he's off his leash. His singing has a swagger, true, but that would be nothing without the backing up by his great band. Yes, he and his group are in sync throughout these two discs, clearly having a ball. Moreover, he also takes a look at his past and decides to put it through a different speed, like he does in this tune which was one of the most known of the rock outfit he was in.

Pentti “Whitey” Glan passed away this week. I had no idea he was so prolific until I read about him in the links below. His local newspaper has a couple articles posted online. Here’s a nice little tidbit I’d never heard before:
When Innisfil’s [Canadian city] Whitey Glan thinks about his former bandmate Lou Reed, he can’t help but smile.
“He was the star, but he’d flip a coin with all the other band members to see who would get the big hotel suite,” said Glan, who played drums for the rocker in the early ’70s. “He was a great guy.”
His obituary can be found HERE, and an article from 2013 is HERE.
Our heroes and idols from the 60s and early 70s are rapidly leaving us. Although I never considered Pentti a “hero,” I certainly recognized him as the drummer on some of my favorite albums of all time. Rock N Roll Animal isn’t Rock N Roll Animal without Pentti.
