Identification of Finds • Hammered for ID please
Back on the farm again for one last shot . The crop is still fairly low but talking with the Farmer he tells me that it can literally spring up overnight but assures me that there should be at least a bit more room left for one more visit over the next week . The weather was a glorious but with the sun beating down on open fields it was a case of travelling light so I decided to head for the upper middle field where there was some shade from the trees . I decided to make this my base camp for the next few hours and leave my bag of bits to save me carrying around items I didn't need . My plan was was to use my bag as a marker and walk across the field back and forth with just the detector , spade and pinpointer and see how I got on . The weather was the deciding factor in all this , it was extremely hot and the shade was a welcome break after a few trips up and down , I could at least cool down and take a breather and some water to freshen up . I was using the Q40 , sensitivity at 70 , Jewellery mode and five bars notched out on all metal . A few non descript bits of lead , a large nail and two crushed drinks cans later I was beginning to wonder if this was a good idea due to the heat . I soldiered on though and my first find was a large button , a welcome site under the circumstances . I stuck rigorously to my plan as best I could keeping a straight line and continued up and down . I had my first coin , A George VI Penny . This was an odd one as it screamed in at a strong 89 -90 . I have found these numbers tend to be moo tubes or cans but the sound was far higher in pitch than usual . Pennies tend to come in at 80-81 so I was surprised to see the coin so it is a good lesson to dig even if you think you know what it could be . It did tend to seem quiet on this upper middle field but I was in for another pleasant unexpected surprise when I got to almost the other side of the field and a good signal at 70-78 , a bit jumpy so I assumed that it may well be another piece of lead but despite thinking this I would dig it anyway . Once again I was in for a shock prior to me wiping away the damp mud I knew it was another Hammered coin . My third Hammered so far and not bad going for a permission that had been "done to death "! I then decided it was time for a well earned cool down and headed back to the welcome shade of the trees . I think I am getting the hang of it with some guesswork thrown in but it may well be another Edward II Penny , London ? Just a guess but some confirmation would be very much appreciated .

As well as the hammered coin it was quite a productive afternoon , buttons feature quite a bit here but now and again the odd lead bullet pops up with the tiny little two ringer and I am assuming a tiny pistol/musket ball , first one from here .
