This is cursed
By this, I mean, having Wallace Huo coming back to dramaland (yayyy) with Lin Gengxin AND Peng Guanying (double yayyy) and Liu Yifei but somehow it’s a contemporary cdrama.

Oooh I have a few!
Everyone wants to meet you — it’s still on Viki even after the Zhang Zhe Han scandal. It’s very 2004 kdrama — small time plucky hotel owner meets cold CEO of a hotel heir, but there are secret identities and an amnesia plot.
youtube
(The trailer makes the drama look fluffier than it is.)
Unexpected falling — so it had a little bit of mystery component to it, but it’s not a procedural. And I have to recommend my boy Peng Guanying. Basic plot, sorta rich housewife’s husband dies in an accident, leaving her with debts and need to live independently. She meets up with a lawyer who was an old classmate of hers, except who is he and what’s his motive. No patriotism though. It’s on YOUKU and available on YouTube.

Promise of Migratory Birds — its 2016 drama with Zhang Ruoyun, Sun Yi, and pre-cancelled Deng Lun. Very early aughts k-drama. It’s a youth drama but the character aren’t stuck in high school. Can be found on YouTube.

Ok, now that I am almost done with the amazing Lighter and Princess, between that and Derailment, I have realized that Go Ahead wasn’t a fluke and there can be more than one modern cdrama that appeals to me.
So I am looking for suggestions. If you ever want to see me word vomit about some modern cdrama, here is your chance.
A few no gos (once you see the list, you will probably realize why I find so few moderns I like; even if we extend to like versus love, there are barely any modern cdramas on the list.)
Anyway, no go:
1. Procedurals - dislike them from any country.
2. Any drama where ML or FL are a cop, a member of the military, national space industry, a prosecutor or any other kind of lawyer, or some other form of patriotic endeavor. The amount of jingoism and propaganda is going to be unbearable whatever the topic of the drama.
3. I hate e-sports, those are out.
4. Unless it’s really outside the mold, dramas set entirely in high school both will lack romance and are likely too young for me (there are exceptions such as Consummation, but that’s unusual.)
5. I hate fluff. Everyone for example loved Love Is Sweet and I felt like I was tied to a chair and someone was shoving cotton candy down my throat for a week straight no matter how I struggled. I didn’t even bother checking out that Yang Zi and Xu Kai drama or the YZ and XZ one.
6. I don’t think anyone will recommend me those anyway, but just in case - dramas about electrification of rural villages and similar stuff are no go. I got enough of that during my childhood.
So anyway, now that the long list of caveats is over, any recs?
Moderns I loved: Go Ahead, Derailment, Lighter and Princess
Moderns I liked: Consummation, Reset, New Face, Love Me If You Dare, Hidden Love (tho it got too plotless for me by the end), Silent Separation, Because of Love (mainly because of first half), Gold Panning (not sure if that counts as modern since it’s set in 1970s tho.)

More Zhuohua spoilers!!
This was a touching scene, because the second and the third prince were right to call him out on it — Lord D is closer with Prince Chen than the 2 other princes, one of whom I actually can’t remember the name. Of course, my theory is that it’s because Prince Chen is a much more pleasant person to be around.
But NGL I love Lord D’a radiating “I’m not mad, I’m disappointed” principal energy.
Though little does he know right now that Roujia’s mastermind. I’m actually here for her villain arc.
Also, not that I care that much about the consensus from mainland China (after all, General and I was widely panned and it’s a top 10 for me), but I think an actor of FSF’s age (my alternative casting would have been Peng Guanying, out of my desire to see him in more period dramas) was the right choice (although I wish the people in charge of post production filters would have thought the same). I know in the novel he’s 26, but idk, considering this is a dude whose older brother’s dying wish is “look after my country and my 18-21+ year old children” if they had casted anyone under the age of 35 it would require some level of suspension of disbelief. But I’m beating a dead horse on this one.

I agree about Zhuohua it's not a bad show and the otp tropes are great but writing could be a lot better and I want to discuss it with all its flaws and strengths but everytime I go on MDL the comments are praising it so much and touting it as this amazing drama I fear trying to have a conversation in that space might result in the detachment of my head from my body lmao
I get that. There are shows that have been fandom favorites (both in the US and in the k and cdrama realm) that I’m like “eh really?” Like legitimately both Love Like the Galaxy and Love Between Fairy and Devil are DNFs for me. Same with books. And it can be frustrating. I’ve also certainly been one of the few people in fandom critical of a show that everyone else seem to love but still watching it. Conversely, I’ve loved shows that plenty of people are critical of (general and I was widely panned and it’s in my top 10).
So my suggestion is, create your tumblr and ramble about it on it like I do.
I also think it’s an interesting experience to examine what type of viewer you are, mostly bc I don’t want to fool you into thinking that I’m some arbiter of taste. I’m not. If I can connect with something (character, OTP etc) emotionally, I will and have ignore bad plot and writing. Conversely, if I can’t connect on that emotional level, it doesn’t matter how good the writing is, it’s not enjoyable for me. Funny enough, Nirvana in Fire is a great example. I can recognize that it’s written well, but I actually haven’t even finished it because I could not make that emotional connection. Meanwhile, I’ve rewatched Princess of the Lan Ling King 3 times even with its far worse quality because the OTP and Peng Guanying’s Yuwen Yong makes me half feral.
I do have a post coming up, which I fear might detach your head from your body, about why I actually enjoy Zhuohua more than I did Sword and the Brocade. Both are done by the same director, and the latter does have better writing, but the answer is: I enjoyed the OTP from the latter less.
