The Spinnaker Hull with California dial is one of the few Panerai Radiomir homage watches you will find.

Whilst the Radiomir was the first watch produced by Panerai for the Italian Navy, it was surpassed in popularity during the 1990's after Sylvestor Stallone wore a Luminor in the hit movie Daylight. The distinctive Luminor design has remained the most popular Panerai ever since. This has limited the number of watch makers that are also producing Radiomir homage watches. 

Similar to the Radiomir, the Spinnaker Hull features a vintage cushion case. The Californian dial (mixture of Roman and Arabic indexes) is a great throwback to the earliest Radiomir's that were created during the 1930's for the Italian Navy. 

The self-winding Japanese automatic movement offers quality and precision without needing too much adjusting. The soft leather strap fits comfortably on the wrist, but it does need some wearing in to overcome initial stiffness. 

The Spinnaker Men's Hull California 42mm can resist up to 100 meters of water and the mineral crystal dial window provides crystal clear viewing.

The second hand is included in the main dial, rather than as a secondary seconds dial like the newer Radiomirs. I'm okay with small modifications like this as it's clear that Spinnaker has not tried to take every Radiomir feature. Vecchie storie di paura

Era proprio in queste sere invernali che i nostri nonni si riunivano “a veglio” nelle case, ed era proprio in questi luoghi davanti a delle scoppiettanti “mondine” e all’aspro vino che nascevano storie incredibili e meravigliose. Uno dei momenti salienti della serata era quando l’abile oratore di turno si metteva a raccontare le storie di paura. Il camino accesso, la penombra della stanza favorivano una tale atmosfera da far ghiacciare il sangue delle vene. Ecco allora alcune storia di paura tratte dalla tradizione orale garfagnina. Racconti stavolta non di buffardelli o streghi come usanza vuole ma di fantasmi e spiriti che si giura fossero davvero reali…

E’ proprio durante il lungo e rigido inverno garfagnino che

le persone si riunivano “a veglio”, questa parola aveva la capacità di riscaldare, divertire e distrarre le persone che nelle fredde sere invernali si riunivano (quando a casa di uno, quando a casa di un altro) davanti al focolare, qui si discuteva dei più svariati problemi,della dura giornata di lavoro nei campi e si raccontavano pure le vicende più incredibili e racconti meravigliosi. Il momento saliente della serata era infatti quando poteva capitare di raccontare storie di paura, in quel momento anche i ragazzi e i bambini che fino a quel momento erano distratti o appisolati in qualche“cantone” della casa si risvegliavano prontamente e aguzzavano le orecchie. La luce tremolante delle fiamme nel camino, la penombra della casa e l’abilità di raccontare dell’anziano oratore di turno creavano un’atmosfera tutta particolare, ad aggiungere gusto alla narrazione c’erano le “mondine” quasi pronte sul fuoco e l’aspro vinello nostrale era il coronamento della veglia. La tradizione orale di questi racconti così è andata avanti per secoli fino ad arrivare a noi, grazie sopratutto al recupero e alla trascrizione di questi racconti da parte di associazioni culturali come il “Gruppo vegliatori di Gallicano” o “La Giubba”di Piazza al Serchio. Le storie che andrò a narrare oggi sono tratte in buone parte dall’egregio lavoro fatto da Umberto Bertolini e Ilaria Giannotti e quelle che ho scelto sono racconti di paura al di fuori dell’ordinario, non legate alla pura tradizione garfagnina dei buffardelli o degli streghi (di cui già ampiamente ho scritto) ma bensì riguardano vicende verosimilmente accadute (così almeno giuravano i protagonisti…), di spiriti e fantasmi. Solitamente prima di cominciare con un racconto il cantastorie faceva delle raccomandazioni, tanto per creare un po’ di pathos negli ascoltatori e rammentava alle donne presenti se avevano raccolto i panni lavati dei loro figli messi ad asciugare all’aria aperta, tale faccenda doveva essere fatta prima che le campane avessero suonato l’Ave Maria della sera, perchè c’era la convinzione che dopo quell’ora per le vie dei paesi garfagnini si aggirassero esseri maligni e se malauguratamente avessero solamente sfiorato i panni stesi, questi potevano procurare brutte malattie  ai bambini  che le avessero indossati. In caso di dimenticanza bisognava“raccattare” questi vestiti il mattino seguente all’ennesimo suono delle campane. Ci si raccomandava anche di non bere alle fontane dopo l’or di notte (n.d.r: l’ordinotte era un’ora dopo l’Ave Maria, cioè quell’ora che segnava la fine del giorno e l’inizio della notte) poichè si “poteva pigliare lo spirito maligno”, però si ci si poteva dissetare solo dopo aver detto “Acqua corrente, ci beve il serpente, ci beve Dio e ci bevo pure io”. Dopo questi buoni consigli di rito si cominciavano a raccontare le storie di paura; una fra le più famose narrava le vicende di MATT’MATTEO.

Questo racconto è probabile che abbia un fondo di verità e riferisce dei fatti accaduti ad un pastore di Vagli.

All’inizio della Valle Arnetola, lungo il corso della via Vandelli si aprono numerose grotte, in quei luoghi si ha come l’impressione che le Apuane ti si stringano tutto intorno, alcune di queste grotte sono profondissime  e le loro acque interne come per magia affiorano proprio nel territorio di Vagli.

Le buche della Valle Arnetola

Una di queste buche, la buca del Pompa, effettivamente faceva sbucare le proprie acque cristalline nei pressi di un lavatoio. Nelle vicinanze di questa buca portava a pascolare le pecore Matt’Matteo, un pastore molto giovane, esuberante e vivace, sempre allegro e con il suo zufolo in bocca. Un brutto giorno il pastorello volle affacciarsi alla buca, gli era parso di sentire delle voci, ad un tratto il suo caprone gli rifilò una forte testata che lo fece precipitare negli abissi. Matt’ Matteo morì. La notizia rattristò tutto il paese e quel che era peggio la povera madre non aveva neanche il corpo su cui piangere. La mamma venuta a conoscenza che le acque della maledetta buca si raccoglievano nei pressi della fonte del lavatoio volle andare lì ad aspettare il corpo del figlio, difatti alcuni giorno dopo le acque restituirono il berretto e lo zufolo, ciò rafforzò ancor di più la convinzione che prima o poi il cadavere del figlio sarebbe ricomparso. Fu tutto vano, i giorni passavano e la madre non si muoveva più dal lavatoio e chiamava in continuazione il figlio, i paesani portavano alla povera donna cibo ed acqua per sostenerla ma la morte dopo un mese circa giunse anche per lei, il dolore fu troppo forte da sopportare. Dopo i fattacci chi passava nelle vicinanze del lavatoio, specialmente dopo le uggiose giornate di pioggia c’è chi vedeva fra la nebbia la povera mamma seduta sul bordo della vasca che guardava nell’acqua ed emetteva un gemito di disperazione da far gelare il sangue nelle vene. L’altra storia se si vuole è abbastanza recente ed è figlia dell’immigrazione e il protagonista è esistito per davvero. I fatti raccontano di tale LEONZIO (nome volutamente creato ad arte per celare la vera identità). Leonzio era emigrato in Inghilterra ed era tornato in Garfagnana  come si suol dire con le tasche piene, con tutti i soldi guadagnati si era comprato una dimora di tuttorispetto che per la sua grandezza e magnificenza era soprannominata “il castello”. Ma come si sa i denari non insegnano nè la buona educazione, nè le buone maniere, per di più non andava mai in chiesa e non sopportava i poveri.

Comunque sia decise per il suo ritorno di offrire ai paesani più ricchi un succulento banchetto presso il castello. Di ritorno dall’aver ordinato le provviste per la grande cena passò davanti al cimitero del paese, vedendo un teschio lo calciò in modo sprezzante così dicendo:- Stasera faccio un grande banchetto e giacchè ti ho trovato ti invito, così mi dirai come si sta nell’aldilà-. Arrivò così la sera e la cena ebbe inizio, i più prelibati piatti erano presenti in quella casa, l’orchestra non smetteva mai di suonare e tutti i commensali gridavano:- Viva Leonzio !!!- e quando la festa era proprio all’apice si sentì bussare alla porta, tanto forte che il castello tremò. Leonzio dette il permesso ai suoi servi di andare ad aprire con il preciso ordine di far entrare chiunque fosse stato ricco o di prenderlo a calci se era un povero. Il servo andò ad aprire e si spaventò tantissimo, così tanto da mettersi seduto per la paura, aveva visto un’orribile ombra, quest’ombra chiedeva di vedere il padrone dal momento che era stata invitata. Riferite le parole dell’essere a Leonzio, prontamente cancellò l’invito, aveva capito che quella “cosa” era l’anima di quel teschio che aveva calciato in giornata. Immediatamente fece chiudere tutti i portoni e le finestre con chiavistelli a doppia mandata ma l’ombra non si fermò, con una tremenda spallata abbatté il grosso portone d’ingresso, gli invitati furono presi dal panico generale, chi scappava a destra, chi a manca ma la creatura rassicurò tutti, voleva solo ed unicamente Leonzio, che fu così avvolto fra le spire dell’ombra che lo immobilizzò dicendogli queste parole:– Nipote mio ascoltami, ti do una brutta notizia, oggi tu morirai, credevi di regnare invece da ora in poi penerai con me per tutta l’eternità all’inferno-. Quel giorno stesso Leonzio morì e nessuno ebbe più il coraggio di entrare in quel palazzo che ben presto fu invaso dai topi che per prima cosa mangiarono il suo ritratto.La prossima novella mescola storia e paura e anche queste vicende fanno riferimento a fatti reali. L’episodio avvenne verso la metà del 1700, quando la nuovissima ma impervia Via Vandelli diventò un’arteria importantissima per i commerci con il mare (leggi la sua storia). La strada era trafficata sopratutto dai mercanti di sale e quello che successe in quel terribile inverno di tre secoli fa, fece prendere il nome a quel tratto di via FOSSA DEI MORTI.

Qui alcuni mercanti estensi in un rigido inverno si recavano a Massa per approvvigionarsi di sale, furono colti da una tempesta di neve senza precedenti. I cavalli e i mercanti erano assiderati dal gran freddo, il vento e la neve battevano pungenti nei loro volti e praticamente non riuscivano ad andare avanti, si rifugiarono in un avvallamento del terreno che diventò ben presto la loro tomba, con ogni probabilità furono colti da una slavina. Da allora i cavatori di marmo e i passanti quando nevica odono ancora in quel luogo i lamenti dei morti e lo scalpitare dei cavalli.

Così si concludeva una sera “a veglio” di un tempo lontano, ognuno riprendeva le proprie cose, le madri si caricavano in braccio il bimbetto impaurito e infreddolito e si andava a casa propria a riposare per il giorno dopo, non rimaneva però che un’operazione da fare, l’ultima persona che lasciava la stanza aveva il compito di battere il ceppo ardente con le molle del camino, le scintille che uscivano dalla cappa camino andavano a portare prosperità nei campi.
