Penelope is a Wallflower…BY CHOICE
Tumblr media
Aight, I’m tired of this “Even a wallflower can bloom” propaganda that Netflix keeps trying to force feed. Penelope is a self imposed wallflower. Through season 1 and 2, Penelope has not tried once to befriend debutantes or talk to anyone in the ton that’s her age, at least from what we’ve seen. It’s not like she tried and people were like, “gtfo my face” and that no one wanted to talk to her. Hell, Edwina tried to strike a convo with her and she ended it quickly to go sniff out Colin’s ass.
I understand how hard it can be to put yourself out there. A full blown introvert is writing this shit right now, but you can’t complain that no one notices you tied with your constant “pretty bridgerton” asshole comment when you put zero effort in talking or courting. That’s the kicker for me, she complains about being a wallflower when she made herself one. But we all know why she didn’t try to socialize; how else was LW supposed to get her content.
Penelope isn’t a victim. Penelope chose to not interact and be unseen cause she wanted to be a fly on the wall for LW for exploit, profit and disdain, more son in S2. She didn’t care about courting cause she only wanted Colin. One of the reasons why she’s doing what she’s doing now is because of Colin saying he didn’t want to date her(should’ve stuck to your guns Colin).
The upcoming season is proof that if she just tried, she would’ve been seen.
It’s not cause she’s shy, it’s not cause she has anxiety, it’s not cause she’s reserved. She is awkward, I give her that, but when it comes to men. She’s completely fine engaging in talk with women(and completely fine in tearing them down).
You know who really embodies a true wallflower: Francesca. From what we’ve seen and known from spoilers, trailer and even her promo, Francesca is reserved and rather stay to herself. She won’t deny anyone a conversation, unless the people are obviously creepy or the topic gets uncomfortable, but she’s nervous cause it’s her first time out on the marriage mart and sticking to the walls is what comforts her at the moment; it’s how she copes.
Francesca doesn’t want to be seen cause she feels she ain’t ready for the marriage mart and is nervous.
Penelope doesn’t want to be seen cause she’s a borderline sociopathic gossipmonger.

Hello! I feel like this is a major unpopular opinion, but i can't stand Penelope. I'm usually all for people standing up to society's expectations and some of my favorite regency books are about the wallflower trope and them not adhering to the rules so I usually love this, but i feel the way Penelope was written makes me dislike her than see her as a icon. She reminds me of people who are fake and will sacrifice intergrity and friendship so they can hear the latest gossip. The scene where Penelope and Eloise fight and how Penelope says she gave up Lady Whistledown for Eloise made me think of how paparazzi will hound celebrities and will act horribly to people, but will also cry wolf if they are told no or pushed back. That may not make sense or be a good example, but I just never liked that Penelope is seen as someone who is right to post all the gossip, but also how she is a victim at the same time. I know that she is invisible in society's eyes and is treated horribly by her family and I feel so bad for her, but I'm not sure how she is completely innocent and a 'good person'...
You have come to the right place. You heard it here first, this is a Kate Sharma and Anthony Bridgerton blog first and an antiPenelope blog second.
I related to the Penelope in the books. A plus size girl (we're going to forget that JQ made her lose weight in book two, because of course she lost weight before her story) who felt invisible, overlooked, and the brunt of every joke, even from her family. Even though her story with Colin was a bit of a let down, Penelope from the books is infinitely better than how they're portraying her in the show.
In an effort to . . . I dunno girlboss? her, they've made Penelope vindictive, spiteful, and insensitive.
Penelope telling Eloise that she gave up LW for her INFURIATED me. If Penelope truly did that for Eloise, she never would have thrown it back in her face like that. If Penelope was truly trying to help Eloise, she would have told Eloise everything before this. If this was for Eloise, she would have never picked up her quill again after their break-up. Penelope acted like she had no other choice other than to write what she did about Eloise, when that was not the case at all.
Accusing someone of associating with political radicals was dangerous! Eloise could have been in serious danger and honestly, the only reason I think the Queen didn't do anything, is because she was more focused on the fact that she was wrong about who LW is, that she couldn't care less what Eloise was doing.
Penelope plays the victim in every situation that SHE creates herself. She did the same in s1 with Marina and Colin, acting like it was SO hard for her to expose Marina like that, but she just had to for Colin's sake. When again, Colin NEVER asked her for anything and she could have just as easily went directly to Colin and told him everything. Or at the very least, told Eloise. But instead she decided to ruin a woman's life, all because Marina was "manipulating" poor little Colin.
And you're absolutely right, the show paints Penelope as this character who is completely justified in everything she does, even while she continues to ruin lives.
Penelope's family is rude to her and so she . . . ruins Marina's life? Eloise's life? To quote Eloise, ". . . tarnishing everyone in town because you are too scared to stand up for yourself in reality."
I don't think anything could make me like Penelope. And it just breaks my heart that they ruined the only plus-sized representation they had on the show.
