Pyloric stenosis- What you should know?
Pyloric stenosis is a rare condition that prevents food from entering the small intestine in infants. A muscular valve between the stomach and small intestine typically keeps food in the stomach until it is ready for the next stage of digestion. The pylorus valve is the name given to this valve.
The pylorus muscles thicken and become abnormally large in pyloric stenosis, preventing food from reaching the small intestine. Pyloric stenosis can cause choking, dehydration, and weight loss. Babies with pyloric stenosis may appear to be constantly hungry. Pyloric stenosis can be treated surgically.
Symptoms of Pyloric Stenosis -
Pyloric stenosis symptoms usually appear 3 to 5 weeks after birth. Pyloric stenosis is uncommon in babies older than three months.
Symptoms include:
Vomiting after feeding- The baby may vomit violently, ejecting breast milk or formula as far as several feet away. This is referred to as projectile vomiting. Initially, vomiting may be mild. However, as the pylorus opening narrows, it becomes more severe. Vomit may occasionally contain blood.
Persistent hunger- Babies with pyloric stenosis frequently want to eat right after vomiting.
Stomach contractions- You may notice wavelike contractions that ripple across your baby's upper stomach stomach area shortly after feeding but before vomiting. These contractions are caused by peristalsis, a digestive process. The stomach muscles contract in an attempt to force food through the narrowed pylorus.
Dehydration- Dehydration can cause your baby to cry without tears or become lethargic. You might notice that you're changing fewer wet diapers or diapers that aren't as wet as you expected. Changes in bowel movements- Babies with pyloric stenosis may be constipated because the condition prevents food from reaching the intestines.
Weight problems- Pyloric stenosis can prevent a baby from gaining weight and, in rare cases, cause weight loss.
Causes of Pyloric Stenosis-
Although the causes of pyloric stenosis are unknown, genetic and environmental factors may be involved. Pyloric stenosis is usually not present at birth and develops later.
Complications
Pyloric stenosis can result in:
Failure to develop and grow.
Dehydration- Dehydration and mineral imbalance can result from frequent vomiting. These minerals are referred to as electrolytes. Many vital functions are regulated by electrolytes.
Irritation in the stomach- Vomiting repeatedly can irritate your baby's stomach and cause minor bleeding.
Jaundice- In rare cases, a substance secreted by the liver can accumulate and cause skin and eye yellowing. This substance is referred to as bilirubin.

Constipation in Children
Constipation is a common issue among children. A youngster who is constipated has infrequent bowel motions or firm, dry faeces. Early toilet training and dietary changes are two common explanations. Fortunately, most occurrences of pediatric constipation are only transitory.
Simple dietary modifications, such as eating more fiber-rich fruits and vegetables and drinking more water, can go a long way toward relieving constipation. If your child's doctor agrees, laxatives may be used to treat constipation in children.
Signs and symptoms of constipation among children:
Having less than three bowel motions per week
Hard, dry, and difficult to pass bowel motions
Pain during a bowel movement
stomach ache
Traces of liquid or pasty stool in your child's underwear – an indication of rectum obstruction.
Hard stool with blood on the surface
If your child is afraid of having a bowel movement, he or she may try to avoid it. When trying to hold a stool, your child may cross his or her legs, clench his or her buttocks, twist his or her body, or make faces.
Constipation is connected with:
Reduced appetite or eating
Feeling of being "full"
Small amounts of blood on the toilet paper or on the stool's exterior
Stool leaking into underwear (encopresis or soiling)
Urinary tract infections on a regular basis
Constipation does not cause:
Headaches
Breath that stinks
Learning difficulties
Poison back-up into the bloodstream
Rupture of the colon or intestine
When should you see a doctor?
Constipation in children is usually not a major problem. Chronic constipation, on the other hand, can cause difficulties or indicate an underlying illness. Consult a Children Specialist if your child's constipation lasts more than two weeks or is accompanied by:
Fever
Absence of eating
There is blood in the faeces.
Swelling in the abdomen
Weight reduction
Pain associated with bowel motions
Part of the intestine exiting the anus (rectal prolapse)

Prenatal – Pediatric surgeons, in cooperation with radiologists, use ultrasound and other technologies during the fetal stage of a child’s development to detect any abnormalities. They can then plan corrective surgery and educate parents before their baby is born. Prenatal diagnosis may lead to fetal surgery, which is a new forefront in the subspecialty of pediatric surgery. The application of most fetal surgical techniques is still in the experimental stage. Worried about Pediatric Surgery? 5 things to know about
As surgical care for children is quite different from care for adults, it’s important to know the difference. Pediatric surgery is a field of medicine that deals with different operations that have to be performed on children. Here are five things you should consider before deciding on whether to perform this on your child or not.
Smaller patient size
The patient’s size is a major factor in pediatric surgery. For example, pediatric surgeons can operate on infants, children, or adolescents. Adult surgeons can also treat children, but they are not always familiar with children’s growth, developmental issues, and complications.
Age limits (fetal surgery)
Pediatric surgeons may perform fetal surgery if the fetus has a congenital abnormality that will require surgery after birth. Pediatric surgeons are also trained to care for premature infants who are also underweight.
Ethical consideration
The ethical aspect plays an important role in pediatric surgery. Many conditions require complex management, but the parents want them to be managed conservatively and sometimes not at all.
Different organs and systems
Pediatric surgeons treat various diseases involving different organs and systems. They require sound knowledge about many different organs and diseases to make proper management decisions.
Lack of significant disease burden
There are generally fewer cases of each condition in kids than in adults. Still, those conditions can be much more severe and lead to lifelong problems requiring prolonged treatment.
Conclusion
Pediatric surgery is a rapidly growing field, and parents must know how to recognize warning signs and symptoms. If you are concerned about your kid’s health during surgery, then contact Dr. Vishesh Dikshit in  Pune.
