So Many, It’s a Bullet List
This trip results in a veritable bullet list of check-offs – both bucket list items and general check-off items on a ‘to do’ list. You know, those things that are must-do’s before you die, as well as those that fail to make that list, but shouldn’t be passed up if in the vicinity - like the world’s largest iron skillet, or the gravesite of Herman Munster, that kind of thing.
We started with Arizona’s Meteor Crater. It measures 55’ deep and a mile across. It is impressive. Anyone there 50,000 years ago would have remembered the event well. We didn’t have time to adequately enjoy the Grand Canyon, so that bucket list item has to wait. It’s too big to have given it a check-off list cursory viewing. So our next stop was Las Vegas. Viva-I-don’t-care. We’d both been there before but it had changed in the intervening 30-40 years. It can change back to desert as far as we care.
Death Valley is a sight (several, actually) to behold. The temp was in the moderate 90’s yet very do-able. Within a couple hours we were at America’s lowest elevation (-282’) and saw the lower 48’s highest – Mt. Whitney. We got a picture of a cool abandoned church at a tiny rundown town where America interred 10,000 of her citizens of Japanese descent during WWII.
Wayne’s sister, Marla, met us at a cool little town on the east side of the Sierras – Lee Vining. From there we saw the Mono Lake tufas and learned a great story about how a very small community fought and beat the water-stealing megalopolis of L.A. That was also the launch for the best ghost town anywhere – Bodie, CA. Look it up. It’s fantastic. As were the giant Sequoias a short distance from Marla’s Sierra Mountain home.

October in San Francisco is definitely the time to go. We toured Alcatraz, walked the Golden Date, drove Lombard Street, visited Haight/Ashbury (a location of infamy for our generation), saw Chinatown, snapped a pic of the house from Full House, visited Fisherman’s Wharf and ate the world’s best sourdough bread while on a bakery tour. All this, as well as a few other check-offs while in town.

The 17-mile drive through Pebble Beach was a check-off that, after seeing it, might ought to have been on the big list merely for the Pacific surf views. And just down the road are San Jose and Santa Cruz where Wayne shared amazing sights and a little historical tour of his own – even the locations of 3 motorcycle wrecks. Oh, and Debbie got stuck in Lodi again.
For Debbie, we ventured to Monterey fairgrounds, site of the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and the inspiration for her short story, Monterey Papa. And who could pass up an opportunity to see Carmel-by-the-Sea, where Clint Eastwood wooed a majority of voters? We had lunch beneath a portrait of him in full western movie costume.

We toured a winery in Napa Valley and the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield. A Saturday morning visit to a farmers’ market in Modesto provided a chance to help judge a chili cookoff.
A major highlight was Yosemite National Park and the black bear that Marla saw first. He (or she) was mostly bashful but very accommodating, allowing a nice video. El Capitan, Half Dome, a hike and a couple waterfalls did not disappoint. The climbers waaaaaay up high on the face of El Capitan added a little excitement. Trying to one-up her companions who reportedly had better vision, Debbie claimed she saw that one of the climbers had cavities. We all swallowed several grains of salt at that one. That Debbie!

Not to be deprived, we saw deer, buffalo, and over a hundred antelopes at play. We drove past miles and miles of orchards and vineyards, wondering what were the actual crops, wishing for helpful signs.
Our return home took us to beautiful Lake Tahoe and the Mormon Tabernacle where we both saw and heard the pipe organ. As impressive to me was an actual cowboy, a long way from a visible ranch, sitting his horse while overlooking a herd of cattle. It could’ve been a scene in a western movie. And not far from there we witnessed a man swinging by a cable from a helicopter (in very strong winds, mind you) to be placed atop a metal power pole tower, the kind that looks like the Eifel Tower’s poor cousin.
Old town Laramie and Cheyenne, as well as Ogallala (remember Clara and Ellie of Lonesome Dove?) were cool. But alas, there was no social club in sight in the very western downtown.
The lonnnnnnnnnnng drive to and from California included 13 states, and mostly their desert-y or plateau-y areas. It was really nice, after 3 weeks, to drop down into NW Arkansas and let our eyes settle on the lovely green hillsides again.

Carmel Valley Manor, Carmel Valley, CA ~ Photos by Dixi Carillo Designed: 1963 Landscape Architects: SWA The Valley's year-round weather report could be summed up as "mostly sunny", as the sun shines here even when the nearby coast is cool and foggy. Yet the proximity of that coast is another benefit of living here as the sea breeze keeps the air fresh and clear. To the south, the seascapes of scenic Big Sur unfold, and the pleasures of the Monterey Peninsula communities Carmel by the Sea, Pebble Beach, Monterey and Pacific Grove are near enough to enjoy whenever you wish. Whether your pleasures are shopping, galleries, and museums, music and theatre, sailing or fishing, world-class golf or walking and hiking amid spectacular scenery, all are close enough to enjoy whenever you wish. Your private residence at Carmel Valley Manor is of the greatest importance to you, and you will have a variety of sizes and styles from which to choose. Your choices in furnishings and décor, enhanced by your collections and treasured objects, will make it uniquely your own. And all are kept fresh and clean and well maintained by the Manor's friendly staff. You'll look forward to meals in the elegant dining room or rose garden patio. When you want to entertain, you can host a festive occasion in the lovely private dining room. The food tastes so good and looks so attractive that you may not even be aware that menus are planned with freshness, variety and optimal nutrition in mind. The attentive service reflects an awareness of your personal preferences. Perhaps your primary reason for choosing Carmel Valley Manor is not the beauty of the setting, nor the convenience of services that make your days carefree, or even the friendships that enrich your life. It may be that you have chosen to live at the Manor because of the ultimate security of the life care program, which means that all your health care needs are taken care of...always. Your personal resources will never be eroded by a lengthy illness or need for care over a long period of time, and your children will never have the burden of making decisions for you. Because you have provided your own future, you can enjoy today. Everyday.

What Recession? The Luxury Housing Market Is Back and Vacation Destinations Are Hot
Miles Astray/iStock
The middle of a pandemic-induced recession, with millions of people out of work and the future uncertain, does not seem like the best time to drop big bucks on a home. That is, unless you’re a wealthy city dweller and that home is a luxury property with an in-ground pool and plenty of acreage, far from the potentially infected urban hordes.
Interest and prices in the luxury housing market rose sharply in May, according to a recent realtor.com® report. (Realtor.com defines luxury as the top 5% of the most expensive homes in a given market.) And demand in that sector has shifted from sleek, urban high-rises to popular vacation destinations where buyers can score larger, more private residences in less populated areas.
“COVID-19 and the recession have not affected everyone equally,” says Javier Vivas, realtor.com’s director of economic research. “We’re coming off a great economic boom … and home buyers in the luxury tier have accumulated wealth for these types of purchases. This is not atypical, as high net worth individuals are traditionally less affected by recessionary blips, and some see it as an opportunity to invest or offload cash into real estate.”
This increase in demand for high-end homes is driving prices up. The entry point for luxury homes rose to a median $2.97 million in May. That’s up 0.5% from April and 6.1% from the previous May, when no one had even heard of COVID-19.
In addition, views of luxury home listings on realtor.com shot up 7.3% year over year in May. That was a departure from April, when views of such listings plummeted 9.5% compared with the previous year.
In the New York City region, an early U.S. epicenter of the pandemic, members of the richest 1% focus their home searches on the Hamptons, a string of exclusive beach communities on the eastern end of Long Island; in upscale parts of New Jersey; and the New York City suburbs. (Prices for luxury properties in the city itself remained steady though, a slight improvement over the mild declines they were seeing before the pandemic.)
Views per property on luxury listings rose 72% annually in the Hamptons in May. They also shot up 40% in Union County, NJ; 30% in Bergen County, NJ; and 28% in Somerset County, NJ. Before the pandemic, listing views were up only 10% to 21% in these areas.
“COVID-19 hit these regions hard and early compared to the rest of the country, prompting potential buyers to reassess their needs and priorities,” says Vivas.
“With the lockdowns and lingering health concerns, buyers of all ages are placing more value on extra space and privacy, with more opting for safer and larger spaces at the expense of [the] urban living lifestyle,” he adds. “That’s made the suburbs and exurbs more attractive, particularly for households who can afford the price tag and those who can work virtually.”
Other popular destinations were the desert getaway of Palm Springs, CA, and Greenwich, CT, a wealthy enclave just outside of New York City. Luxury listing views rose 28% and 24% in those locations respectively.
However, not all high-end markets fared as well. Interest has waned in Honolulu; Key West, FL; Pebble Beach, CA; and Colorado ski towns in Eagle and Summit counties.
There was also still a shortage of luxury listings. The number of $1 million-plus homes on the market dropped 15.6% year over year in May. These homes also took a bit longer to sell—a median 89 days on the market in May compared with 71 days a year earlier.

Civic Action Assessment of Issue
If you have not been civically engaged, what are YOU willing to do in the future to respond to your civic action issue?
1. As a citizen of this county, I believe the most important thing we can do is be educated about issues facing our community. I think citizens should be educated about all the issues in their community so they can choose to be politically active about an issue or need that they are passionate about.
2. In this class I learned how important civic responsibility is. Before learning about how state and federal government worked I didn’t think my voice could have any impact on issues. It’s important that citizens uphold their civic responsibility so their voices can go through the different layers of government and eventually end up on the federal level.
3. I do feel a fair amount of responsibility for my civic action issue dealing with clean water and water distribution. As an avid fly fisherman I have witnessed firsthand the devastation poorly managed water can have on ecosystems and local economies.
4. Though I haven’t done any civic action during the course of this project on my issue, I have volunteered lots of time in the past since clean water is so important for me. I have done community service for Save the Bay earlier this winter where I restored native plant species to our coastal ecosystem. I have been to a beach clean up in Oregon and river clean up at the lower Sacramento river outside of Redding CA. In addition to these acts of community service I have signed a handful of petitions such as pebble mine against damming rivers and mining near delicate ecosystems.
5. I am going to school for environmental engineering which has a heavy focus on hydrology and dams. With a degree in this I hope to be very active in dam removal for rivers with anadromous fish runs in the future.

California lawmakers were showered with more than $810,000 in gifts last year, many from powerful interest groups lobbying the state who handed out concert and professional sports tickets, spa treatments, gourmet dinners and trips to a dozen countries, new state reports show. The annual economic disclosure reports shed light on how state legislators can augment their annual $110,459 salaries with gifts that allow them to travel the world and eat at expensive restaurants, often in the company of corporate executives seeking to influence their decisions in the Legislature. The legislators reported accepting travel expenses for trips to China, Poland, South Korea, Japan, Chile, India, Spain, Germany, Israel, Mexico, El Salvador and the Netherlands. Closer to home, they also flew to New Orleans; Las Vegas; Aspen, Colo.; New York; and Maui. Many of the trips were billed as study or trade missions, while others involved speeches and panel discussions given by the lawmaker who reported the gift. “The truth is the vast majority of gifts and trips are given because the gift givers want something in return,” said Rey Lopez-Calderon, executive director of California Common Cause, a government watchdog organization. “It's not just a question of the gift giver wanting something in return, but that the public could infer that even if it's not true. There is potential for the public's faith in government to be undermined.” While some gifts are made through nonprofit organizations, others are paid for directly by interest groups. Former Assemblyman Dante Acosta (R-Santa Clarita) reported accepting a luxury box seat worth $615 to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers play the Boston Red Sox in the World Series from a group called Communities for California Cardrooms, whose board of directors is made up of casino operators. Acosta lost his bid for reelection in November. Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) received more than $1,800 in tickets to sporting events, including $460 for a pair of tickets to Game 5 of the World Series. The tickets were provided by Michael Lizarraga, president of the East Los Angeles Community Union. Rendon also received $305 worth of tickets and food from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club to attend a day of horse racing. Assemblyman Steven Choi (R-Irvine) attended a concert by Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. The gift was provided by the Pechanga Resort and Casino that included lodging and meals, with the whole package reported to have a value of $400. Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell) accepted a $238 ticket from AT&T to a Katy Perry concert. And Assemblyman Brian Dahle (R-Bieber) reported gifts including tickets worth $882 to Disney on Ice paid for by the California Building Industry Assn. and the California Correctional Peace Officers Assn. Other lawmakers were treated to a weekend at the golf resort in Pebble Beach, Calif., on the dime of the Assn. of California Life and Health Insurance Companies, while the California Charter Schools Assn. paid expenses for 19 lawmakers it invited to attend a symposium in La Jolla. Those who accepted travel expenses of $800 or more included Assembly members Heath Flora (R-Ripon), Devon Mathis (R-Visalia) and Marie Waldron (R-Escondido). Other gifts included bottles of wine and champagne, boxes of oranges and almonds, cowboy hats and spa treatments. The lawmakers who received the most gifts in the two houses were state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), who accepted $59,000 in travel, meals and other gifts, and Assemblyman Mike Gipson (D-Carson), whose tally was $41,400. Wiener’s trips included a $14,798 study trip for 10 days to Japan paid by the Japanese government, a $12,138 trip over 11 days to the Netherlands to examine flood management and infrastructure, and an $11,330 trip over two weeks to Chile to discuss clean energy and emergency preparedness. Gipson was among several other lawmakers who also were part of the legislative delegation to Chile and the Netherlands. The latter two trips were paid for by the California Foundation on the Environment and the Economy, a nonprofit group partly financed by the oil and telecommunications industries and construction labor groups. The organization’s board of directors includes executives from PG&E, Southern California Edison, Shell Energy North America, Western States Petroleum Assn., AT&T, Comcast and Health Net Inc. The foundation’s “forums and study travel projects put a diverse cross-section of California leaders into direct contact with their counterparts around the world,” said P.J. Johnston, a spokesman for the group. “This sharing of views and experiences leads to a broader understanding of complex issues while also promoting what makes California special.” Wiener noted that the foreign trips he took were not paid for by taxpayers. “My preference is to spend my non-Sacramento time in San Francisco, but at the same time, seeing and learning about other countries’ policy approaches to issues confronting California — including meeting with senior government officials and advocates — makes me a better and more informed legislator,” Wiener said. He said he learned about energy and water issues on his travels to Chile and the Netherlands. In Japan, he gathered information on issues including housing and high-speed rail. A trip with one of the largest groups of lawmakers attending —14 — was to an annual conference on Maui sponsored by the Independent Voter Project, a nonprofit group that receives funding from corporations and labor groups, including the California Correctional Peace Officers Assn., tobacco giant Altria and the California Cable & Telecommunications Assn., all of which lobby extensively in the state Capitol. Lawmakers received about $2,600 each for expenses to attend the annual conference at a luxury resort. “The bipartisan nature of the conference helps promote cooperation and civility in the legislature,” the group said in a written statement Monday, adding, “It is important to engage in constructive dialogue outside the politically charged confines of Sacramento.” Assemblyman Chad Mayes (R-Yucca Valley) was among the top gift getters in the lower house and accepted more than $38,000 for gifts, trips, lodging and meals. The former Assembly Republican leader traveled to the Netherlands, Israel, New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Aspen and Sausalito, where he gave speeches or spoke on panels in 2018. Joe Justin, a spokesman for Mayes, said the assemblyman was presented with a number of educational travel opportunities last year. “What interested him in the Israel trip was meeting with some of their elected leaders, and understanding how that region of the world works,” Justin said. “I think when we’re dealing with issues of immigration conflict, seeing how other countries are dealing with that is instructive and helpful. When you look outside your own bubble, you tend to improve your awareness.” The California Foundation on the Environment and the Economy paid a nearly $12,000 tab for Mayes’ 10-day trip the Netherlands in late March. Another group called AJC Project Interchange spent more than $6,800 in July to bring Mayes to Israel to meet with officials over eight days. Mayes also accepted $470 for golf outings and drinks from the Assn. of California Life and Health Insurance Companies during a trip to Sausalito, Calif., where his attendance cost the group nearly $2,500. There have been legislative attempts in the past to restrict many gifts, including tickets to concerts and amusement parks. But the last bill was vetoed in 2014 by Gov. Jerry Brown, who said disclosure is sufficient. Lopez-Calderon said the flood of gifts to legislators is concerning, even if the gifts and trips are legal.

Own a Piece of Utopia in Northern California’s Sea Ranch Community: 9 Homes for Sale
realtor.com
Along a 10-mile stretch of rugged Northern California coastline sits a unique planned community that combined social and environmental idealism with modernist architecture. The lofty ideals may have mellowed since its establishment in the 1960s (it’s hard to keep up with a utopia, after all), but with its gorgeous location, Sea Ranch has become a popular vacation destination—and a highly sought-after place to buy a home.
The community’s master planner was Lawrence Halprin, an innovative landscape architect inspired by kibbutz living who envisioned a group of clean-lined buildings that would visually blend with their environment and have minimal impact on it.
“We wanted houses to weather and become part of the landscape,” said Donlyn Lyndon, one of the architects who designed some of the Sea Ranch buildings, in a video now being shown in an exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. (The development is about 110 miles north of San Francisco.)
Architects Charles Moore, Joseph Esherick, William Turnbull Jr., Donlyn Lyndon, and Richard Whitaker took inspiration from the wild surroundings as they designed the original wood-and-glass buildings.
A list of Sea Ranch Principles displayed in the exhibition tout “rural, not suburban”and “simplicity not flamboyance.” The development mix includes community-oriented condominiums, single-family residences, carefully preserved open spaces, and common buildings, including a general store and a restaurant. No golf courses, McMansions, or suburban sprawl here!
“The environmentally attentive design philosophies explored at The Sea Ranch, along with the now-iconic graphics, resonated globally and continue to influence architecture and design today,” the exhibition website notes.
For those who want to buy at Sea Ranch, simple, modernist homes—now perfectly weathered—that take advantage of the ocean views are still available. Here are nine of them on the market right now.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (July 27, 2018) – As part of the redesigned Saratoga Wine and Food Festival, both of the ultra-rare, $40-million-plus 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantics will be together on site at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center for the first time in more than 15 years. The Atlantics will be part of the 2018 International Bugatti Tour taking place in Saratoga Springs, in which there will be more than 80 Bugattis ranging from classic to modern-day models. This is the first time the tour has taken place in the United States in nearly a decade, and the first time ever in New York State. Considered the “Mona Lisa” of automobiles, the Type 57SC Atlantic is considered among the very best of pre-war Europe. Jean Bugatti, the son of Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti, created the Aérolithe concept, making its debut in Paris in 1935. It was well-before its time, made out of a light but flammable magnesium alloy called Elektron; therefore the body panels were riveted externally. Beneath the body was a new chassis (T57) and a new double overhead-cam engine, making the Aérolithe the most advanced car of its time. After the Aérolithe show car, Bugatti only produced four supercharged Atlantic coupes using aluminum instead of magnesium while keeping the rivets. Powered by supercharged 3,257 cc inline-8 engines, these 170-plus horsepower cars could do north of 120 m.p.h. Today, two cars remain. One belongs to the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxford, Ca. and the other is owned by fashion mogul Ralph Lauren. The last time both vehicles were together was at the 2003 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. The Atlantics’ appearance was made possible through the American Bugatti Club, Alan Rosenblum, and the Saratoga Automobile Museum. The Mullin Atlantic: It was delivered to Lord Victor Rothschild in England on Sept. 2, 1936. Three years later, in 1939, Mr. Rothschild had the Bugatti factory install a Roots supercharger from a Type 55 engine, upgrading the model to a Type 57SC. Having blown up the engine, he nevertheless kept the car in storage in England until 1941, when he sold it to his countryman Mr. T.P. Tunnard Moore. Mr. Moore and Robert Arbuthnot, a sometime racer at Brooklands, were partners at High Speed Motors of London. At some point, Mr. Moore sold the car to Arbuthnot, who in turn sold it in to Rodney Clarke of Continental Cars, Ltd., in 1944. A year later, Mr. Clarke sold the Type 57SC to Mr. Robert Oliver, a wealthy American doing duty in France as a member of the US Army Medical Corps. In August 1946, Mr. Oliver had 57374 shipped to the United States, where he received it in New York and proceeded to drive it home to Los Angeles. In 1953, Mr. Oliver shipped the car back to the Bugatti factory, where its engine was completely rebuilt and the correct Type 57SC supercharger and hydraulic brakes were installed. Following Mr. Oliver’s passing the Atlantic was sold in 1971 through public auction to Dr. Peter Williamson who paid an unprecedented $59,000. Following refurbishment, the car was shown at Pebble Beach in 2003 and won “Best in Show”. In 2010 the Williamson family sold the Atlantic to a buyer from whom the car is graciously on loan. The Lauren Atlantic: It was ordered by English barrister Richard B. Pope, who was also an amateur tennis champion. Great Britain was Bugatti’s best export market, and Pope was the company’s most devoted British customer. The Atlantic was his tenth Bugatti, as he ordered a new model whenever they came out. The most distinctive feature of its almost sinister body is the exposed seams with button head rivets running down the spine and around the fenders. This construction technique came about because the magnesium alloy used in an earlier Bugatti models was problematic to weld. Although the Atlantic’s aluminum body presented no such obstacle, designer Jean Bugatti retained the riveted seams for aesthetic reasons. Revered Bugatti historian Hugh Conway found the Atlantic “extraordinary, bizarre and interesting, but not perhaps beautiful in any normal sense.” The car is, in its essence, a fluid natural form to which Jean Bugatti deftly added his own flamboyant touches. Ralph Lauren purchased the vehicle in 1988, in which it underwent a restoration from 1989 to 1991. “Hosting the only two Atlantic cars in the world – which haven’t been together in 15 years – on our grounds at Saratoga Performing Arts Center is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community and for lovers of fine cars from around the globe to experience their beauty. These rare and exquisite automobiles represent a significant piece of history that will shine against the backdrop of our park’s opulent reflecting pool, set within the Roosevelt Campus of the Spa State Park,” said Elizabeth Sobol, president & CEO of Saratoga Performing Arts Center. “We are grateful to the American Bugatti Club, Alan Rosenblum and the Saratoga Automobile Museum for making this exceptional viewing possible.” “There are occasions in one’s life that can be considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Having these two Bugatti Atlantics together for the first time in 15 years is truly an incredible opportunity for not just Saratoga Springs but for all of New York State. My thanks to Alan Rosenblum and the American Bugatti Club for making this fantasy become reality,” said Carly Connors, executive director of the Saratoga Automobile Museum. “Securing the second Atlantic is huge for us. We’ve revamped the festival on so many levels, and having this addition completes the experience in the best way. We are looking forward to being the first event to host these two iconic Bugattis together for the first time in 15 years. It’s safe to say that guests are in for a thrilling and magical weekend,” said Colin Cowie of Colin Cowie Lifestyle. Held in the beautiful Saratoga Spa State Park, the weekend is anchored by four events: an Adirondack Road Tour and Luncheon, Friday’s Fired Up! Grill Competition with Chef David Burke and Red Sox legend David Ortiz, Saturday’s Grand Tasting and—for the first time— brunch with Colin Cowie and Todd English. Why is Auto Title Loans Better than Payday loans?
A Payday Loan amount typically ranges from $100 to $300 in California. It is a short-term Loan and has to be completely paid back in under 31 days. Payday Loans rely on specific income for their repayments (such as your next paycheck or a pending tax refund). Moreover, an Auto Title Loans is designed to give much larger Loan amounts (thousands of dollars) and can be paid back over a longer time frame (usually 12 to 36 months). In other words, a Payday Loan can possibly be viewed as a temporary fix, whereas an Auto Title Loans is designed to fulfill your longer financial needs.
