Review on a nonfunctional GED site run by incompetent shitheads that stressed out my little precious sibling. (Pearson Vue)
Okay, sooooooo there's a site called Pearson Vue, don't use it if you're planning on getting your ged. Just don't.
It causes pain.
My little sibling has been trying to take their tests for over a month and only got through one.
The company's system is shot, it doesn't work (keeps detecting stuff that isn't there), the IT solution employees are clueless, had to reschedule over 5 times, I'm pretty sure their programs haven't been updated since the 90s... headaches.
Just take the test at your local college for a better experience.
I plot the fall of this empire. I want to dismantle the company. I want to destroy them with a plague of frogs and actual plague. Fuck pearson vue.
I've only seen reviews on reddit, I had to post one here so all good people trying to get their diplomas can rest assured that whatever they chose is heaps better than this.
TL:DR Zero stars. Feel less pain, don't use it.

Taking a class at a local community college and running into the ol' "pay to access your homework on our laggy, glitchy website" problem.
Like, I've got my degree. This class is just for kicks, and the textbook cost doesn't even strain my budget the way it used to. But I still got a pale echo of the RAGE I used to feel for the educational complex extracting money from me so incompetently.

Oh for fuck's sake! The textbook (Pearson subsidiary) not only didn't provide a date for this text (or any other text), but they actually changed the name of the selection from how it is cited elsewhere, making it more difficult to backfill all the missing contextual information.
Honestly, if a publisher can't/won't follow basic conventions of academic documentation and style, they shouldn't be in the business.
#no i don't care that they write the end of course exam and using their book is 'an advantage'#we should have higher standards#this is why we can't have nice things#fuck capitalism#fuck pearson#education

How to Correct Sentence Structures Effectively
Here is an essay with a few deliberate sentence structure or grammatical errors for a sentence correction test: Task: Correct any grammatical or structural errors you find in the essay. My Daily Routine Every day begin with a morning alarm. I wakes up early at 6:00 AM, and after freshening up, I go for a walk in park. The fresh air makes me feel energetic, and I enjoy the sound of chirping…

also i do really think its funny that in an attempt to one-up annoying people tumblr lefties are starting to lean towards the idea that a system designed to prepare kids for the endless 9-5 or otherwise funnel them into prison or the military was good actually and that if you complain about shitty teachers and overall lack of depth you were just stupid actually

ogghhhh that post has me thinking about gifted classes and ap oHHHHH
here’s some fun things i experienced/learned/did/etc in school:
1. was placed into a gifted program in first grade based entirely on results of a paper IQ test that all students were obligated to take
2. said gifted program replaced six years of my history education from 1st-6th grade
3. said gifted program mainly featured skill building in Microsoft Publisher and Powerpoint, which was super important and vital at the time?
4. again i missed SIX YEARS OF HISTORY CLASS. for POWERPOINTS
5. went to high school where english and history classes were linked (???) so if you did AP for one you had to do AP for the other. ended up doing honors for both when i reasonably could have handled AP english to avoid the horrors of APUSH. considering i had no formal history education for my elementary school career.
6. comfortably trucked along academically for three years, go into guidance counselor’s office senior year to ask about AP and college credits
7. “oh just pay to take the AP test, if you pass you get the college credits and if you fail it doesn’t matter!” it also doesn’t matter if you take the junior or senior year ap english test. even if you yourself are… a senior…
8. 80 dollars later and i had a 5 on the AP english test thus three free (well not free it was 80 dollars you get it) College Credits.
9. i never took the class. i never read the ap study book. i just took it and passed it and they gave me a free college A for 80 dollars. OKAY??
10. go to college, almost fail out of undergrad. those three credits were literally the reason i could claw myself out of that spicy little situation
11. pass undergrad, go into graduate school to become a teacher
12. get reaffirmed by all professors colleagues and peers that standardized tests gifted programs and honors/AP are uhhhh extremely flawed at best
13. get job in a school where i have to push standardized testing, AP, and college readiness to all students at behest of admin
14. they got the dude who hates tests to teach the youth how to take tests. man
anyway if you are in high school and can afford it just take the ap tests without dealing with the shitty class. you only need a 3 to get what is basically a freebie A in a college class. take any test you can, doesn’t matter if it’s below your class level. AP is bullshit and i am an educational fraud
#remember kids!#education is important but not more important than LIVING YOUR LIFE!!!!#work the system to get what you need to open the doors YOU want for your career and future. not what some bozo tells you is right for you#its always ethical to fuck over pearson :)#education

Deception, Sportsmanship, and Ethics
By KATHLEEN M. PEARSON
Physical educators, if they are to go beyond the lay person's grasp of their profession, must be willing to undertake the task of dissecting and analyzing the many concepts they employ.
Some of the most common concepts with which we deal are only dimly un-derstood. Worse yet, we seem content to live in this twilight world. Status as a profession demands that we make every effort to shine the light of analysis on the many fuzzy concepts with which we constantly must deal.
One of the more troublesome areas with which we struggle is the domain of ethics, and this seems particularly acute for those who work in athletics. I believe that some of the confusion surrounding the nature of ethical conduct in sport can be cleared up through an analysis of the concept of deception in athletics.
At the heart of every athletic activity is the attempt to successfully deceive one's opponent. The thesis presented here is that deception in athletics is not a simple, unitary event.
Deception can be analyzed into at least two types: (a) Strategic Deception and (b) Definitional Deception.
Finally, a rule of thumb can be established for deciding on the ethics of acts of deception which fall into those two categories.
STRATEGIC DECEPTION
Strategic deception occurs when an athlete deceives his opponent into thinking he will move to the right when he actually intends to move left
—that he will bunt the baseball when he intends to hit a line drivethat he will drive the tennis ball when he actually intends to lob it. Examples of this sort of deception are replete in athletic events and need not be elaborated here.

My little brother stood quietly beside his desk with a magnifying glass in his hand.
I looked at him from the splintered frame of our kitchen door where I was standing.
He turned slowly, ln deep thought, and looked at me through the lens of the glass.
His magnified eye was astonishingly big and earthily brown, as big as the whole, wide world and as brown as the turned ground in the fields around our farm.
“Carver, why you up?,” I whispered. “It’s the middle of the night.”
“I cain’t sleep,” he whispered back.
“What you doin’?”
“I’m studyin’ a tomato.”
Sure enough, there was a sliced tomato on his desk, each slice looking very much like the wheels on Daddy’s wagon.
“Did you know,” he asked, “That tomatoes come from the Andes Mountains 'round Peru in South America? And that they're fruits and not vegetables 'cause they’re ripened flower ovaries and contain seeds? And that they're good for your heart?”
I walked over to him and knelt down beside him.
I turned his magnifying glass around and looked into his eye.
I saw clearly the parts of his eye that my teacher taught me at school, the colored part that is the iris and the black part that is the pupil.
But it was Carver who taught me how these parts work together to help us see.
“Carter,”he asked, “Did you know if we divided our brains into five parts, a little more than three of those parts would be used for seeing?
There’s a thin layer on the inside of the eyeball.
It’s the retina.
Nobody could see into the retina until microscopes were invented.
When people looked inside the retina for the first time, they found millions of tiny cells called rods and cones.
Those rods and cones find rays of light and turn them into signals for optic nerves.
The optic nerves send these signals to the brain, and it turns them into pictures.
‘Cause of the way lenses work, the picture is upside down.
The brain turns it right side up.
Idn’ that amazing?”
“Yeah,” I marveled, “It's amazing. And, you know what? So are you.”
He taught me the parts of the eye that helped him see the world as everyone sees it.
In that moment, though, deep in the dark of night, I tried to see the parts that I didn’t understand, the parts that woke my brother up in the middle of the night to study a tomato while our corner of the world slept, the parts that helped him see the world as only Carver could see it.
But those parts remained hidden from me.
I gently put my arm around his shoulders and held him close to me.
“I got you, little buddy,” I whispered. “I got you. And I always will.”

it is totally okay to be hurt and tired and fed up with the american schooling system but i need you to understand that we need to be better about loudly and routinely defending public education.
yes, many teachers suck, many schools utterly suck. i also got bullied and was absolutely not given the right support for my needs. i am not defending public education because it was kind to me. i am defending it because it needs to exist.
right-wing republicans do not want an educated population. they want kids to be homeschooled or in private school. there is a huge religious undertone to this.
the most common argument is that despite high costs, the "result" is not "good" enough. they point to failing schools as proof that public education is just never going to work out. there will be arguments made here that you actually agree with: that teachers can be bullies, that we taught online for 2 years and still charged the same amount of tuition, that we have no recourse for students to actually have agency or a voice, and that schools are now unsafe for kids due to risk of illness and gun violence.
these are all placing the blame in a fraudulent way, one intended to get your parents to homeschool you. the less kids in a school, the less federally-awarded funding for that school, the less any school succeeds. they will not mention the fact it is their legislation that takes away important funding opportunities, that teachers are living at or below the poverty line, that buildings are not kept up to code, that administration is overpaid and forces specific curriculums, that corporations like (my personal enemy) Pearson Education control certain classroom goals because teachers can't afford other options. they pretend to be ignorant of the gun violence and say "oh just get a gun" - but these are the same people who will be sending their child to a private school with a bulletproof backpack. they don't care if your kid dies, though. they "don't believe" in covid, but they did get their kid vaccinated, because of course they did.
it is a closed loop. conservative parents hear the fearmongering and remove children from the system. frequently these parents are also deeply religious. the kids are raised without access to other media & learn to parrot their parents. you have now created a new generation of conservatives. additionally, one of the parents/caregivers must stay home and homeschool the children, usually for free. i will give you 1 guess which parent tends to stay home to homeschool the children. these parents are encouraged to have many, many children. those children are most likely not getting access to safe sex ed.
we might laugh at fox news suggesting teachers are forcing children to use kitty litter but: first of all, there is kitty litter in the classroom. it's part of an emergency kit in case children are locked in due to a shooter. so that's fucking dystopian, and the fact they've completely reimagined the scenario to somehow make the teachers look bad when it's instead a fucking huge symbol of our failure as a country to protect our children.... it feels a little intentional.
secondly: don't just dismiss the situation. because, yeah, obviously, no teacher is encouraging kids to be a catboy. but the actual undertone that fox news is trying to sew is an outright distrust of teachers and of public education. they rely on the dehumanization of trans people as a common touchstone to hide the fact they're pushing two agendas at once. (which is ironic. because the thing they accuse teachers of. is pushing. an agenda.)
whenever someone tells you they want you to read less, you should be suspicious of that. when someone tries to separate you and your education, you should be suspicious of that. i don't even like incel rhetoric nor would i want my kids exposed to it - but i would not take away my child's (age-appropriate) access to the internet. i would just provide more educational materials, not less. the difference here is that i believe we can resolve ignorance with knowledge; whereas conservatives believe that ignorance is bliss.
they misappropriate funding and demonize teachers. they pull the same trick each time - the same thing we are seeing with anti-trans rhetoric. they do not want you to have access to safe sex ed, so they act horrified, claim sex ed teaches you how to thrust deep, claim that we have no idea what "age-appropriate" means. since the mid-nineties, the united states has spent at least 2 billion dollars on abstinence-only education, even though to quote the above link: "a preponderance of studies has found no effect of abstinence education at reducing adolescent pregnancy". conservatives want you to think less of any person struggling with addiction so they can continue their racist "war on drugs", so they spend up to $750 million dollars a year on the DARE program which has absolutely no effect. acting like teachers "must" be "grooming" children is just the same thing - so they can demand that funding either goes to their causes or the funding doesn't "exist" ("i'm not paying for our kids to learn that thing!")
and they want you to feel uncaring about this. they are aware that you will hate some parts of your school experience. pretty much everyone does. they want to lean into the parts that you hate so that you don't put up a fight about it when they take it away for not being "good enough."
i know i maybe sound like a conspiracy theorist. but truly. truly. it is beneficial for conservatives to reduce your faith in the american public schooling system.
one of the explicitly stated campaign promises of the conservative party: to axe the Department of Education in 2024.
i know we are all tired and burnt out and there is so much else wrong with their entire platform. but maybe just - pay attention to this one.
#i can't believe i have to say this#the conservative party is legit like ''is it anything good? okay we hate it.''#''lets kill lgbt people and ummmmm school children shouldnt be able to read they should be at home watching jordan peterson :)"#the fact that it's like all related is. wild.#like it's wild bc if u start being like. actually making it impossible to afford housing is part of how they keep the nuclear family.....#it's just like lines connecting to lines. EXCEPT ITS OBVIOUS?#what's wild to me about most conspiracy theorists is that they're like . ohhhh the govt is hiding shit!!!!!!! they don't want u to know!!!#and im like. this old man literally got up on stage and said he hates public education and will let our kids die before taking away ak-47s#and ppl are like: lol thats just bob's sense of humor he didn't mean it literally uwu
