College basketball corruption fallout tracker: Scandal leaves players ineligible everywhere
Follow the fallout from the FBI’s bombshell investigation into college basketball corruption.
It may take months or even years for the total impact of the FBI’s expansive investigation into wide-spread corruption throughout college basketball to be clear. But it took only hours after corruption and fraud schemes involving coaches at prominent programs were detailed by a U.S. Attorney on Tuesday for the immediate aftershocks to be felt.
Here are the key developments related to the players and programs involved in the scandal:
NCAA rules Auburn’s Austin Wiley ineligible for season
Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports
Auburn center Austin Wiley has been ruled ineligible until the 2018-19 season following the program’s self-reported violations on recruiting, extra benefits, and agent-related activity, the NCAA has announced.
Wiley is arguably the biggest recruit in the history of Auburn basketball. The Tigers haven’t missed the five-star center early in the season. Auburn became ranked for the first time in 15 years following a 15-1 start to the season.
USC will hold De’Anthony Melton out all season
The Trojans have held out sophomore guard De’Anthony Melton all season while investigating his role in the FBI scandal. Now USC has decided Melton will not play for them this season.
Melton’s family friend reportedly received $5,000 to direct him to use a certain agent and financial service advisor when he turned pro. Melton was considered a possible first round NBA draft pick heading into the season.
Auburn suspends Danjel Purifoy indefinitely
This was supposed to be the year Bruce Pearl got Auburn back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2003. Now the FBI scandal has provided a tangible hit to the Tigers’ roster: starting forward Danjel Purifoy have been suspended indefinitely because of their ties to corruption allegations against Auburn assistant Chuck Person.
Person, who was arrested in the FBI probe, allegedly gave more than $18,000 to the families of two Auburn players. Purifoy averaged 11.5 points per game as a redshirt freshman last season.
Rick Pitino out at Louisville
Louisville interim president Greg Postel announced Wednesday that head basketball coach Rick Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich were placed on administrative leave. Pitino's attorney, Steve Spence, told the Courier-Journal that Louisville had “effectively fired” the coach. Louisville has named David Padgett as the interim head coach.
Pitino was officially fired from Louisville on Monday:
ULAA has voted to terminate Rick Pitino's employment "for just cause."
— Jeff Greer (@jeffgreer_cj) October 16, 2017
How was Louisville involved?
Louisville acknowledged it was a part of the scandal on Tuesday. The program allegedly worked with Adidas to funnel $100,000 to an unnamed recruit who appears to be McDonald’s All-American shooting guard Brian Bowen. A coach was also caught on tape discussing a payment to a future recruit.
Louisville names David Padgett interim head coach
David Padgett will be “acting” Louisville coach. Played for Cards from 2005-08. Only been on staff for a couple years, one as an assistant.
— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) September 29, 2017
Louisville is staying in-house with its next head coach, promoting assistant David Padgett to the top job on an interim basis. Padgett is only 32 years old and was a fan favorite for the Cardinals as a three-year starting center.
Brian Bowen transfers to South Carolina
Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports
Bowen has transferred to South Carolina.
He was the Louisville recruit widely believed to be the unnamed player in the investigation who allegedly received a $100,000 payment to commit to the Cardinals in June. The FBI cleared Bowen in November, saying he had no knowledge of the bride accepted by his family.
What does this mean for Louisville basketball?
Bowen was supposed to be Donovan Mitchell’s replacement in the backcourt. He was also the type of three-point shooter the roster desperately needed.
Anfernee Simons and Courtney Ramey decommit from Louisville
Top prospects Anfernee Simons and Courtney Ramey on Wednesday announced they would no longer be attending Louisville , shortly after Pitino was placed on administrative leave:
THANK YOU LOUISVILLE #L1C4 http://pic.twitter.com/UQSRWa7OHK
— Anfernee Simons (@AnferneeSimons) September 27, 2017
What does this mean for Louisville basketball?
It means Louisville has already lost its entire 2018 recruiting class just one day after the scandal broke. Simmons was a five-star guard ranked No. 8 overall in the class, while Ramey was a top-50 overall point guard. These are two elite prospects who are now reopening their recruitments.
5-star guard Romeo Langford no longer considering Louisville
Langford, ESPN’s No. 5 overall recruit in the country, has cut Louisville from his list, according to his father. We predicted the elite shooting guard would pick the Cardinals earlier this month before the scandal broke.
Auburn suspends assistant coach Chuck Person
John Reed-USA TODAY Sports
In the wake of Person’s arrest, Auburn suspended him without pay on Tuesday.
"This morning's news is shocking. We are saddened, angry and disappointed," university president Steven Leath wrote in a series of tweets posted to Twitter. "We are committed to playing by the rules, and that's what we expect from our coaches. In the meantime, Auburn is working closely with law enforcement, and we will help them in their investigation in any way we can."
How was Person involved?
Person allegedly collected $91,500 in bribes to push college athletes to work with Rashan Michel, the owner of an Atlanta-based clothing store.
What does this mean for Auburn basketball?
Head coach Bruce Pearl already has one show-cause penalty from the NCAA. This puts his program, which had been recruiting at an incredibly high level, under the microscope of the NCAA.
E.J. Montgomery decommits from Auburn
E.J. Montgomery, a four-star recruit from Georiga, decommitted from Auburn, his father told Scout.com Wednesday. Montgomery, a 6’10 power forward, had initially committed to Auburn Sept. 22.
What does this mean for Auburn basketball?
Montgomery was Auburn’s only recruit in the 2018 class, but he was a good one. He would have given Pearl a versatile lefty forward who would create with the ball in his hands. Montgomery’s commitment was more proof that Pearl was recruiting at a high level since going to Auburn. You have to wonder if that changes going forward.
Auburn is offering basketball ticket refunds
In addition to suspending Person, Auburn is offering season ticket holders full refunds for the upcoming basketball season. The school had previously announced that all season tickets had beens sold out for the fourth straight season.
Alabama’s director of basketball operations resigns
Alabama AD Greg Byrne announced he accepted the resignation of Kobie Baker, the school’s director of basketball operations, after an internal review of the program. Here’s the catch: The same statement said Alabama “has not identified any NCAA or SEC rules violations nor the involvement of any other coach or staff member,”.
Arizona suspends assistant coach Book Richardson
Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports
How was Richardson involved?
Richardson, an assistant coach under head coach Sean Miller since 2009, allegedly accepted $20,000 in bribes from agency “runner” Christian Dawkins and financial adviser Muhish Sood for steering a top Arizona point guard recruit to work with them. The recruit in question is believed to be five-star floor general Jahvon Quinerly.
What does this mean for Arizona basketball?
Richardson has been arrested and could face up to 60 years in federal prison. He has been suspended and relieved of all duties at Arizona. Quinerly also could be suspended or decide to play professionally overseas instead of honoring his commitment.
NBA players flee from ASM agency after ties to probe
The office of NBA agent Andy Miller was raided by the FBI this week after ties to the federal probe. Christian Dawkins, one of 10 men arrested in the investigation, used to work for Miller before being fired in May for racking up $42,000 in Uber expenses.
Now athletes are fleeing the agency, including first round draft pick Justin Patton (formerly of Creighton, now with the Timberwolves) and second rounder Edmond Sumner (formerly of Xavier, now with the Pacers).
Willie Reed has gone even further. The veteran big man filed a $13.5 million arbitration claim after alleging he was defrauded, according to ESPN.
Dawkins, sources say, advised Reed to turn down a preliminary three-year, $15 million deal by the Miami Heat early in the free-agency juncture with the promise of a larger market opening up for his services.
That never occurred.
Reed terminated his contract with Miller on the evening of July 11, sources say. Sources say Dawkins represented Reed and others well after he was believed to have been fired from the company over two months ago for racking up $42,000 in Uber charges on an unnamed NBA player's credit card.
Alabama five-star Collin Sexton suspended 1-game, then eligible
Alabama announces that Collin Sexton will sit out tomorrow's game as a one-game suspension -- but will be eligible for Tuesday's game.
— Jeff Borzello (@jeffborzello) November 10, 2017
Sexton, arguably the best freshman guard in the country, missed Alabama’s exhibition games, sparking speculation that he could be ineligible this season. Turns out he’ll only miss the Crimson Tide’s opener.
College basketball fans should be happy to be able to watch him play.
Oklahoma State fires assistant Lamont Evans
Photo by Gerardo Mora/Getty Images for ESPN
Lamont Evans was fired by Oklahoma State on Thursday. He had previously been suspended with pay on Tuesday afternoon.
“We have been in contact with the NCAA and will provide additional information as it becomes available,” the university said in a statement obtained by Tulsa World. “OSU takes seriously the high standards of conduct expected in our athletic department and does not tolerate any deviation from those standards.”
How was Evans involved?
Evans allegedly accepted $22,000 in bribes during his time at South Carolina, as well as Oklahoma State, to influence athletes toward business advisory and investment management services from Munish Sood.
What does this mean for Oklahoma State basketball?
The Cowboys could face an investigation from the NCAA. South Carolina and Frank Martin might be in the same boat after the indictment named the program in connection with Evans’ bribes. The same could go for new Illinois coach Brad Underwood, who hired Evans as an assistant during his one year as Cowboys coach.
USC assistant Tony Bland placed on administrative leave
USC placed associate head basketball coach Tony Bland on administrative leave on Tuesday after learning of his arrest and involvement in the FBI investigation.
How was Bland involved?
Bland allegedly accepted $13,000 in bribes to steer players to an agent. Bland also allegedly worked with agents and financial advisers to send $9,000 to families of two current USC basketball players.
What does this mean for USC basketball?
USC was about to start one of its most anticipated seasons ever as a consensus top-15 team. The NCAA is likely to investigate the players referenced in the report, which could leave them suspended or ineligible.

The Top Winners In The 2017 Hot August Nights Cup Contest
Participants in Hot August Nights have the opportunity to display their vehicles at individual judging events all over the area. There is show car judging with big money awards going on at the biggest resorts as well as several opportunities to win in downtown Reno.
The big prize, the really big prize, is the coveted Hot August Nights Cup presented by Downtown Reno. This pro-judged category draws the best street rods and muscle cars in the country for the chance to win part of the cash and product awards valued at more than $100,000. This year, that prize went to the “Mulholland Speedster,” Bruce and Peggy Wanta’s 1936 Packard, built by Troy Ladd and the fabricators at Hollywood Hot Rods.
Like the “Mulholland Speedster,” most of the vehicles that show up to compete for the Cup are already well-known—from television, magazines, and from the winners’ circle at other prominents shows such as the Detoit Autorama and the Grand National Roadster Show. These are the superheroes of the specialty car universe and Hot August Nights is the arena for a showdown.
The 2017 contest started long before anybody showed up at Hot August Nights. Vehicle owners and builders applied in advance to compete for the Cup, and 50 were selected for competition. Those 50 semifinalists were displayed in a designated area in downtown Reno from Wednesday through Friday. A trio of judges spent that time reducing the field to the Top 10 qualifiers. This years judges were builder Steve Mank from Spike TV’s “MuscleCar,” builder Eddie Potestio of Eddie’s Rods & Customs in Pueblo, Colorado, and show promoter Reggie Tibbets of The Supernationals Auto Show in Albuquerque.
The Top 10 finalists were exhibited inside the Reno Sparks Convention Center on Saturday before returning downtown for the awards presentation. All 10 finalists received a Hot August Nights jacket and trophy. The top five winners also received a five-night stay at Eldorado Resorts, and generous product awards from Adam’s Premium Car Care Products, ididit, Painless Performance Parts, Optima Batteries, and AMSOIL. Cash prizes of $30,000, $18,000, and $10,000 were awarded to the First, Second, and Third Place winners, announced on Saturday evening by My Classic Car host Dennis Gage..
Hot August Nights Cup Best of Show 1936 Packard Roadster Owners: Bruce & Peggy Wanta, Bellevue, WA Builder: Troy Ladd / Hollywood Hot Rods, Burbank, CA
Bruce and Peggy’s Packard, aka the “Mulholland Speedster” as been dominating the show circuit in 2017, starting with winning the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster prize at the Grand National Roadster Show in January. The coachbuilt roadster from Hollywood Hot Rods was styled after a 1936 Packard using designs by Eric Black. The car rides on a figure eight shaped frame and features uniques indpendent suspension components. The Lincoln V-12 runs Hogan heads and is topped with a Latham-Hogan supercharger. One of the most popular features of the car is the top, which flips 180 degreess into the deck.
Second Place 1951 Ford Club Coupe Owner: Bruce Leven, Mercer Island, WA Builder: Craig Wick / Wicked Fabrication, Auburn, WA
In addition to success in motorsports, Bruce has owned some remarkable street cars. This 1951 Ford combines elements of a race car, an early sports car, and a custom car. The radically reshaped body was done so well it avoids looking like a departure from the classic shoebox style. The Novi Indy car style wheels were built off the original Halibrand castings. Another collaboration with Wicked Fabrication, the Ford is powered by a Shaver Racing Engines Lincoln 368 with rare Hilborn injectors converted to EFI. The suspension was custom fabricated around an Art Morrison chassis.
Third Place 1957 Chevy Nomad Owners: Ron & Dianna Maier, Hillsboro, OR Builder: Aaron Atnip & Mark Spurlock / A&M Deluxe Customs, Cornelius, OR
Customizing a Tri-Five Chevy body can be tricky business. There’s a reason these cars are classics, and one false slice can undo that. The team at A&M made numerous mods to the body of Ron & Dianna’s ’57 Nomad and every one of them incredibly enhances the car. The “Shomad” as it’s called, got a new Art Morrison chassis and an LS7 Corvette engine, plus a long list of body and interior modifications including a two-inch chop, custom hood, and leather covered front and rear bucket seats. Gold and pearl paint completes the picture.
Fourth Place 1956 Volkswagen Beetle Owners: Rob & Julie Freeman, Watertown, NY Builder: Gary Brown / Browns Metal Mods, Port Leyden, NY
We can’t think of a Volkswagen fan or a Buick fan who could have ever predicted Rob and Julie’s amazing combination of an 1956 oval-window Beetle and a Buick small-block V8. The “Berlin Buick,” which is built based on Rob’s concepty and design, had its back seat eliminated to make room for the electronic Hilborn injected 1961 Buick 215 engine. The tube chassis features independent suspsension and RideTech shocks. The Buick influence continues to the exterior, most noticeably with the portals. The paint is a combo of Tonic Brown and Ginger Beer.
Fifth Place 1956 Chevy Nomad Owners: John & Sheila Emacio, Chattaroy, WA Builder: Jay, Chuck & Ryan Gruba / G3 Rods, Rapid City, SD
Nomads nabbed two spots in the Top 10 with John and Sheila’s ’56 taking Fifth Place. The Emacios met the Grubas at Hot August Nights in 2015, later teaming up for this car. There is an Art Morrison chassis underneath. Under the hood is a Jack Gibbs 409 engine with Inglese injection, backed up with a Gearstar 4L80E transmission. Outside, the drip rails have been shaved and corners were radiused. The grille opening was customized with mesh, above the flipped front bumper. The custom interior is covered in red leather. The Nomad also received a Street Rodder Top 100 win.
Sixth Place 1930 Ford Model A Coupe Owners: Ted & Colleen Hubbard, South Bend, NE Builder: Andy Leach / CAL Automotive Creations, Bennington, NE
Spectators at the 2017 Detroit Autorama witnessed the debut of this Model A, a Great 8 Ridler contender and another Andy Leach build to make it into the Top 10 in Reno. Of these ten, it’s the closest to the popular image of a street rod. The Ardun OHV aluminum Flathead is fed via a classic S.Co.T.-blower with a Winters quick-change rearend in back. The 6-inch-chopped coupe body is factory steel with countless mods the factory never dreamed of—finished in Paleozoic Blue paint with conntrasting distressed leather in the cockpit. The unique EVOD wheels set off the coupe’s personality.
Seventh Place 1969 Chevy Camaro Owners: Josh & Tamara Hodges, Bakersfield, CA Builder: HED industries speed shop
Since Hot August Nights is open to 1976 and older cars, it draws amazing muscle cars like Josh and Tamara’s 1969 Camaro—and is phenomenal. Built by HED Industries, the car has been cosmetically modified with widened doors and fenders, and a bunch of scratchbuilt parts, such as the hood, grille, front bumper, and more—and those air ducts are functional. The Camaro is power by 1,000 horses in the form of a 441ci Magnuson-blown LS7 engine with a Tremec six-speed. Detroit Speed front subframe and a four-bar rear add to the muscle of the Hodges’ ride.
Eighth Place 1932 Chevy Sedan Owner: Kenneth Rathmann, Tranquility, CA Builder: Steve Chapman / Fab-Worx, Fresno, CA
Ken’s ’32 Chevy sedan is a favorite at Hot August Nights and has had a lot of success there as well as other shows such as the Grand National Roadster Show, where it won Best Rod. Among its wins in Reno was Street Rodder’s pick as a Top 100 car a few years ago. This year, Kenneth’s two-tone Chevy returned to take its place among the Cup finalists. Built by Steve Chapman, the Car features a small-block Chevy crowned with a trio of two-barrel carbs. The two-tone paint is beautiful, but peek underneath to see an incredible polished and plated chassis and suspension.
Ninth Place: 1953 Chevy Pickup Owner: Adam Simms, Napa, CA Builder: Phil Ferrari / Phil Ferrari Hot Rods, Rancho Cordova, CA
Building this beautiful burgundy five-window ’53 was a collaborative effort between Adam and Phil Ferrari. The truck was another big winner at the GNRS and elsewhere before impressing the Hot August Nights judges with its countless exterior custom modifications—from frenched headlights to shaved panels, and a modified bed with remote-controlled wood floor. The cream white engine compartment holds a fuel-injected 502-inch Chevy big-block tied to a six-speed transmssion. The chassis includes a Mustang II style frontend and four-bar rear. Plush leather fills the cab.
Tenth Place 1960 Cadillac Coupe De Ville Owner: Jerry Logan, Salt Lake City, UT Builder: Dave Kindig / Kindig-It Design Salt Lake City, UT
The “Copper Cadillac” attracts a crowd wherever it goes, and has become a celebrity from it’s appearances on television’s Bitchin’ Rides, and as King of Kustoms at the Sacramento Autorama. The chopped, slammed, and lowered Caddy Coupe De Ville was built by Dave Kindig. Barrels of candy brandywine paint were sprayed over the extensively customized body, which features copper trim and bullets everywhere. In this second post on the Missouri Ozarks, we’re looking at an artifact of the tourism boom the Ozarks experienced after the publication of The Shepherd of the Hills in 1907.  People from around the country flocked to Taney County to glimpse areas mentioned in the novel and get a taste of Ozarks culture.
The local economy prospered as residents like Pearl Spurlock started businesses to capitalize on the new tourist industry.  Spurlock was known for her taxi tours of Branson and the surrounding region in the 1920s.  She wrote this book full of colorful stories about local characters and places of interest, especially as they related to The Shepherd of the Hills.  When three members of the Ross family, the inspiration for the main characters of the novel, passed away in 1923, Spurlock led a fundraising campaign for a monument to be placed on their unmarked graves.  For the dedication ceremony, she recruited none other than the poet laureate of the plains, John Neihardt, who lived in Branson at the time. Neihardt was at work on research for a book that would later be published as Black Elk Speaks.
Here in Special Collections we have Neihardt’s personal library, and we’ll delve into it next week for a look at his books about the Ozark region.

Ozark Chair Shop, Beaver Dam.
Ozark Chair Shop, Beaver Dam.  Real photo postcard. Although this was called Ozark Chair Shop, for the passing tourist what caught the eye were the colorful drip-glaze pots in many sizes that filled the shelves and yard. Nut head dolls, cedar boxes and wood carvings were more locally made souvenirs sold along the highways. “You may also see many small jars in a very attractive variety of colors…

Oklahoma State star Jeffrey Carroll won’t play during review
Oklahoma State announces that G Jeffrey Carroll "is being withheld from play pending the ongoing review of the men’s basketball program." Senior from Rowlett averaged 17.5 ppg last season.
— Chuck Carlton (@ChuckCarltonDMN) November 10, 2017
Oklahoma State was one of the schools that had an assistant coach arrested in the federal probe. Carroll appears to be at the center of the investigation.
This is a huge blow for the Cowboys. We ranked Carroll as the No. 46 player in college basketball during the preseason.
Auburn suspends Austin Wiley and Danjel Purifoy indefinitely
Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports
This was supposed to be the year Bruce Pearl got Auburn back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2003. Now the FBI scandal has provided a tangible hit to the Tigers’ roster: star center Austin Wiley and starting forward Danjel Purifoy have been suspended indefinitely because of their ties to corruption allegations against Auburn assistant Chuck Person.
Person, who was arrested in the FBI probe, allegedly gave more than $18,000 to the families of two Auburn players. Wiley is arguably the biggest recruit in the program’s recent history as a five-star big man who joined the Tigers midway through last year. Purifoy averaged 11.5 points per game as a redshirt freshman last season.
USC’s De’Anthony Melton misses season opener
As expected, USC sophomore De'Anthony Melton is in street clothes while the Trojans warm up for their opener. No announcement from the school, but the FBI investigation mentioned a USC sophomore.
— Nathan Fenno (@nathanfenno) November 11, 2017
USC assistant Tony Bland was arrested in the federal probe. Two Trojans players reportedly received a payment facilitated by Bland.
Brian Bowen will not play for Louisville
Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports
Bowen will not play for Louisville this season, the school has announced.
He was widely believed to be the unnamed player in the investigation who allegedly received a $100,000 payment to commit to the Cardinals in June.

A statement from the Tide’s athletic director says:
The NCAA informed us late this afternoon that Collin Sexton has not had his eligibility reinstated by the NCAA. We don’t have any further information at this time, but we will continue to cooperate with the NCAA and work toward a resolution that results in Collin’s timely reinstatement.
While we are disappointed, the right decision was to err on the side of caution for tonight’s exhibition game.

College basketball corruption fallout tracker: Auburn suspends star Austin Wiley indefinitely
Brian Bowen suspended by Louisville, cleared by FBI
Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports
Bowen has been suspended indefinitely by the program, according to reports. He was widely believed to be the unnamed player in the investigation who allegedly received a $100,000 payment to commit to the Cardinals in June. The FBI cleared Bowen in November, saying he had no knowledge of the bride accepted by his family. Louisville is now allowed to reinstate him, if it chooses to do so.
