Human/Fairy Relations 4
1 2 3 4
Continued from a story based on a prompt from @arc852
Flowers were springing up, and it was getting warmer every day, so Thomas and Patton packed up their few belongings and prepared to move back into the town house.
Thomas was heading back first, since Patton wanted to try and say goodbye to Logan.
He unlocked the door and set down his pack heavily on the floor. The house smelled musty, and would need a good cleaning. In from cracks in the windowframes came little springs of ivy. Honestly, all the windows would have to be replaced. Thomas did not know how to replace windows. Well, he’d figure something out.
He built up a fire and set his biggest pot filled with water on it to heat up. He’d dip out enough for tea, and use the rest to clean.
He scoured the kitchen and mopped the rest of the downstairs, which really wasn’t all that big, mostly just a living room and a couple closets. Then he went upstairs. He had two bedrooms, his own, and one that was now Patton’s.
He went into Patton’s first, stripping the sheets off the bed and pulling down the curtains. They’d all have to be washed. Then he went into his own room, but as he stripped the sheets off, there was a tiny shriek, and something flew across the room and smacked into the wall. Thomas dropped the sheet immediately.
“Oh! I didn’t mean to fling you like that! Are you alright?”
He knelt near the fairy, which was just starting to get back on its feet. It was Virgil.
“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t—didn’t know where else—I—“
There was a silence for a few seconds while Thomas tried to figure out what Virgil was apologizing for.
“MynameisVirgil!” He suddenly burst out, screwing his eyes shut.
Thomas felt an odd tingle run down his back.
“I have some tea made,” he started. “Why don’t we go downstairs, calm down, have some tea, and discuss this properly.”
“You mean that isn’t enough?” Virgil said, his voice nearly breaking.
“No, that’s not what I mean. Let’s have some tea first, and then we can talk.”
Virgil nodded, and flew up to shoulder level, following Thomas downstairs.
Thomas made two cups of tea, one with way too much sugar, and settled back to drink his tea. Virgil took a few sips from the cup, and his wings fluttered happily, but his face was downcast.
“S-so what now?”
“First I’d like a complete explanation of what exactly is going on,” Thomas said. “I’ve heard that you got kicked out of your village, and now you’re in my house, but I don’t know what all else.”
“I was banished, and it was getting colder, and I didn’t know where to go, but your house was empty, so I stayed here for the winter. I-I broke the laws of hospitality by staying without asking, but I thought that my name would be enough to pay it back.”
Thomas nodded. Hospitality laws were a fairy thing, and he didn’t know all the details, but it wasn’t like he could return the name.
“So then, since you gave me your name, are you gonna be my new roommate?”
Virgil blinked. “Um… if you want me to stay, but—“
“I would like it if you stayed.”
Virgil blinked again. “Why? I thought—I thought you hated me?”
“No! No, I never hated you! I was mad about being kidnapped and all, but I hurt you too. I was honestly worried you wouldn’t ever want to see me again.”
Virgil shook his head. “No, you just tried to get away. It’s my own fault for letting you.”
The front door opened, and Patton set down a heavy pack next to Thomas’s.
“I’m home!” He came into the kitchen. “Oh! Hello.”
“Hi,” Virgil said, moving to the side to put the teacup in between himself and Patton.
“Virgil’s going to be our new roommate,” Thomas said.
Virgil shuddered.
“Are you alright?” Thomas asked. “If you don’t want to-“
“No, it’s a name thing,” Patton said. “If you call his name he gets… like… it kind of hurts I think?”
“I had no idea!” Thomas protested immediately.
“It’s not really that painful,” Patton said thoughtfully. “But you definitely notice it. I got around it by calling Logic Lo sometimes, or Logic.”
“You can call me Virge,” Virgil said.
“Ok, thank goodness. I don’t want to walk on eggshells about names. What if I say that I’m not giving you my name, but you can call me Thomas?”
Patton nodded.
“That works,” Virgil said.
••^*^••
The house was filled with smoke again. Thomas and Patton opened the door and all the windows, evacuating to the yard.
“Do you think you could ask whatever fairy keeps doing this to stop?” Thomas asked, coughing.
“He’s pretty mad at you. You’d have to pay him.” Virgil said.
“Pay him what?”
Virgil shrugged. “I can ask?”
“Please do.”
Virgil flitted away, and took a while to come back, but when he did there was another fairy in tow.
The other fairy was larger than most fairies, and had his arms crossed over his chest.
“You won’t get me to leave,” he said as soon as he was within earshot. “I’ve got permission from the prince to be here.”
“Not even if we paid you?” Patton asked.
“You broke my house!” The fairy yelled. “I won’t leave until I’ve done the same to yours!”
“What?” Thomas said. “I didn’t think—“
“He built my old house,” Virgil whispered from his position on Thomas’s shoulder.
“Oh.”
There was a tense silence for a few minutes. Just as the fairy turned to leave, Thomas had an idea.
“Wait! Um, just a minute!” He ran inside and went to the hall closet, emptying the middle shelf and propping the door open.
The other fairy followed him in, and frowned down at him.
“What if I paid you to build Virge another house here?”
Thomas didn’t say, but secretly hoped, that once the fairy had built something, he wouldn’t chance it getting ruined by attacking the human house any longer.
“How do I know you aren’t just going to smash it again?”
“We can empty out the closet completely, and lock the door, and put a fairy sized door in it. I wouldn’t open it. But if it’s going to be the whole closet, you’d better make it nice, with plenty of guest rooms.”
The fairy’s frown didn’t leave, but there was a bright glint in his eye as he sized up the closet.
“You’d empty out the human things, but leave the platforms?” He clarified.
Thomas nodded, assuming he meant the shelves.
“And how much are you thinking to pay me?” The fairy asked.
“Having been inside Virge’s old house, I could see that your level of craftsmanship must be very high,” Thomas said, hoping to flatter the fairy. “I couldn’t begin to put a price on it.”
The fairy’s hovering bounced around erratically, which Thomas hoped meant the flattery had worked.
“You provide the materials, and food for me and my helpers, and I’ll have it done in a fortnight.” The fairy said.
Thomas was shocked at how little the fairy was asking, and readily agreed.
••^*^••
Patton loved baking, and he certainly got to do as much as he wanted. Fairies loved sweet things, and he made batch after batch of cookies and scones and tiny cakes. All eaten, or secreted away somewhere.
Virgil usually hovered around Thomas’s shoulder, unless Thomas went into town, just as quiet as he had always been. Patton suspected that Virgil had more to say than he actually said, and he knew Thomas thought the same way, but Virgil was typically silent. He seemed happy just to hang around.
It was the last day. By sunset they would close the closet door, lock it, and never open it again. Inside was a complex house, mostly made of natural materials, but with several distinct additions from Thomas’s belongings, such as two bathtubs made from teacups. It was large enough it could have easily housed fifteen or twenty fairies, and would be a mansion for Virgil alone. Patton hoped that Logan would visit.
Patton pulled out the pan of thumbprint cookies, the jelly bubbling a bit. He set them all on a plate and took it outside. He had a pot of floral tea, and a whole bowl of sugar as well.
“Lunch is ready!” He called, and soon there were five fairies, each lifting a cookie nearly as big as they were, and eating eagerly.
To his surprise, he could see two more fairies coming, but these were coming from the direction of the forest.
“Lo! Ro! Hi! I didn’t expect you!” Patton greeted.
Roman bowed, and Logan followed suit. “I have come to see what it is drawing so many of my people away.”
“We’re building a fairy house!” Patton said. “Oh, wait, you don’t mind, do you?”
Roman chuckled. “I’d like to see it first, and to talk with Thomas.”
Patton was slightly worried that Roman knew Thomas’s name, but he still led him inside.
Thomas was sitting on the floor opposite the closet, watching as the windows were being put into the door. He had told Patton that he hoped to learn from watching the fairies do it, so he could replace the rotting windows in the house.
“Hey, Pat. Who are these?”
“This is The Prince, and Logic,” Patton said, not really daring to use their names.
Thomas nodded respectfully. “To what do I owe this honor?”
Roman smiled. “I’ve come to inquire why you’re doing this.”
“Specifically, I wanted a house for Virge, and I wanted my house to not be under attack any more. But in general— I’m aware that we parted badly. I was angry at fairies, and I’m sure you were angry with me as well. I wish to restore the Human/Fairy relations.”
Roman nodded. “You are aware that you do not speak for all humans, as I do not speak for all fairies?”
“I am. I can only speak for myself and Patton, but we want to have good relationships with you.”
Roman nodded again. “You may say that, and your actions so far may support it, but clever humans have said the same before, only to capture my people and kill them.”
Thomas nodded slowly. “As a gesture of goodwill, then, to you alone, Prince. If I ever turn against you, you may have my name, Thomas Sanders.”
Roman’s eyebrows shot up, and he smiled. “That is acceptable. You are given permission to call me by my name, Roman. I hope to establish a friendship between my people and yours.”
Roman shifted into human form, though he looked rather less human than Logan ever did, and stuck out his hand for Thomas to shake.
Thomas smiled and shook his hand. “I also hope to be friends with you, Roman. Would you like to join me for lunch?”
••^*^••
It wasn’t long after when Virgil’s banishment was revoked, as well as whatever punishment had been given to Logan. He never would say what it was.
Thomas and Patton lived happily in the town house for many years, even though the townspeople pulled away from them more and more as time went by. Eventually, the town itself, as it grew, pulled away, and their house was outside the town. Thomas bought several of the acres around the house, and Patton grew the most beautiful garden in the country. The garden was always filled with fairies, not that just anyone could see them, but it was always clear when stepping in that there was much magic in the air.
Thomas, as it turned out, had an affinity for magic, and Logan taught him what he could. As a team, Thomas, Roman, and Virgil defeated a dragon that had been plaguing the kingdom, and the king gave them enough gold to live happily and without concern, no matter how long they might live.

Patton’s Perfect Family Chapter 10: Cooking, Movies, and Punishments Part 1
Masterpost
Written with @wittlevirgilsanders
TW: Forced cuddling, talk of past punishments, forcing someone to wear different clothing, locking someone in a room
Patton woke up extra early the next morning. He was pleasantly surprised to find that Logan had slept through the alarm. His poor baby was probably exhausted. He was so upset last night, but it wasn't Patton's fault! Logan shouldn't have pushed him away so harshly. Logan should have realized, he should've been grateful that was all Patton did! Patton got him nice things and even got Logan something so he could see his stupid stars again! Then Logan just starts yelling and cursing? No, Patton wasn't going to let that slide. Logan had to learn otherwise none of this was worth it.
He had learned though. The punishment had worked and Logan had apologized and even slept with him. Now they could celebrate their marriage today! Logie could stay up here with Patton today!
After Patton took care of the rest of their family.
Patton sat up and kissed Logan's forehead gently before going over to the closet. Virgil needed to be punished today. He couldn't just get in the way of messing with his parents big day. Patton had just the idea how.
Patton slipped the key into the lock on the door downstairs, after double checking that the doors leaving the room were locked. He glanced over at Logan again. He couldn't help it, Logan was just so cute! Patton kissed Logan on the forehead again before slipping downstairs, balancing the many things he was holding and attempting not to trip.
Patton stopped at the table first, setting everything down as quietly as possible. He quietly walked over to his kiddo's room and unlocked the door. He opened their closet door. Looking in he turned towards Virgil's side. Patton had doors installed to their closet so they had some privacy between each other. Patton picked through his key chain and found the one for Virgil's part of the closet. He locked it and took the clothes he had in his hand and hung them above Virgil's door.
He stayed and admired the dress for a minute. All things considered it was a nice dress, not that Virgil would look at it like that. It would ruin his... aesthetic. It was light to dark blue dress with pink flowers decorating it. Gray sparkles were sprinkled over the dress. Patton was going to have to get a picture for the album before Virgil got too upset.
He went back into the dining room and picked up a tray and one of the two notes on the table. The tray held what was normally Roman's food in smaller portions. He clicked open the door to Roman's room. He really should keep it cleaner, it was so messy. He knew the Roman was a writer, but that didn't mean he could just have paper everywhere. He'd have to talk to his brother about it tomorrow when his punishment was over. Patton put the tray and note on Roman's bedside table and left the room. The door clicks closed and Patton locked it with yet another key.
Patton set up the kitchen table for his kiddos' breakfast and set off to his last errand; Logan's room. He walked in and glanced around. Logan's room was still a little messy from yesterday, papers were on the floor and a lamp had been knocked over while they were fighting. Patton picked up his lamp and groaned to find that the bulb had broken and glass was all over the floor. He took a paper and slid as much of the glass as he could onto a paper, cutting himself in the process.
He threw the paper in the trash and walked over to the bed. He'd have to come down tonight to clean it up. He couldn't risk his kiddos or Logie cutting themself on it.
Logan would just have to stay with him again tonight.
Patton picked up the NASA sweater from last night and folded it up. He looked in the closet and found a pair of black sweatpants in the back. He grabbed the projector, locked the door to Logie's room, and brought the stuff upstairs. Logan was still very much asleep, though Patton could blame him. It was only about 5:30 and he was probably still tired. He locked the downstairs door back and set the clothes down on the bed. He took the projector into the living room and set it up to where once it was it was turned on the stars would cover the whole room instead of just one wall.
Patton set up the living room for their day together. Patton was hoping that he would only have to leave Logan a few times to cook, at least until lunch. Patton finished the living room and left to the kitchen to work on breakfast before Logan woke up.
Virgil wasn't sure when he woke up. Sometime before eight, that's the only thing he was sure of. The only reason he knew that was because that's what the clock said now. The bright red numbers were the only source of light in the room right now. The nightlight Patton had given him had turned off at some point.
Virgil only got out of the bed because he was getting worried. Logan had yet to come to the room and wake them up and by now it was nearly nine. Logan always came in before nine to check on them, even if Patton hadn't come down yet. Though Patton was typically down by now. Virgil needed to go make sure everything was ok.
Everything was, in fact, not ok. Virgil had gone out of the room to find everywhere completely empty and every door locked besides his own and the bathroom. Even Logan's, and his was never locked. As far as he could tell, Logan had never come down last night. After looking around everywhere for someone, he had even tried going into Roman's room, but the door was locked, he went to the dining table.
There was breakfast.
And a note:
Hey kiddos! I'm sorry for all the theatrics. Me and your Papa are spending the day together to celebrate our marriage! I'll be down to get Dami before lunch for his first cooking lesson! Virgil I expect to see you in the dress when I come down. If you're not your punishment may have to be longer. Do not try to wear Dami's clothes. Your uncle is on punishment too. Don't you dare try to talk to him through that door! I'll see you at lunch kiddos! Be good for Me!
Love,
Dad<3<3<3
That solved most of the mystery's. Still not Logan's door though. Maybe it was locked to give him privacy? One thing Virgil knew for certain was that he was not wearing a dress again.
Logan could smell something cooking in the kitchen. Bacon? Downstairs didn't have a kitchen? Where was he?
Yesterday's memories hit Logan like a train. The marriage, the yelling, the box, his glasses, falling asleep. He should have expected it. Patton kept saying they were engaged, it was only a matter of time before Patton actually made them get married. Of course his stupid emotions just had to get in the way of real life. He needed to be prepared.
Logan tried to reach for his glasses before remembering again that they were in fact, not on his table. Patton had put them somewhere else last night. Logan was now successfully restricted to the bed unless he would like Patton to know he was awake, which wasn't something he was ready for right now. Or he could just run into walls and any other small things trying to find his glasses.
He couldn't take it anymore. He needed his glasses. It felt to much like his punishment, he could practically feel Patton's hands around him, feel his mouth on his shoulder, the gentle k-
"Logie? Are you awake yet? You're sleeping in awfully late."
"Y-yes Patton. I'm sorry, could you give me my glasses."
"Of course, bunny! Just let me finish this up!" True to his word Patton finished up and came back in, grabbing Logan's glasses from a table... on the other side of the room? Didn't Patton set them on a table close to the bed?
"I have an amazing day planned for us Logie!"
"That's great Pat, shouldn't we already be downstairs? You said it was late?" Patton practically squealed at the nickname, Logan hadn't even realized he'd said it until then.
"I already set everything up with the kiddos until lunch! We've got about four hours until I need to get Dami!"
"That's... that's great Patton." Logan didn't think he could last four hours up here with him, alone.
"Come on, It's time for breakfast bunny! you need to change first though!"
"Change? I'm perfectly fine the way I am Patton." Patton shook his head quickly and reached for something on the side of the bed.
"You've been wearing that since yesterday! And we're wearing pajamas today!" Patton stuffed a bundle of clothes into Logan's hands. He found the NASA sweatshirt Patton had given him last night and a pair sweatpants.
"O-ok Patton. Could you just point me to the bathroom?" Logan hadn't been anywhere beyond the bedroom and the living room since he'd been here, and the living room was only the last night. Logan shivered at the memory.
"What do you need a bathroom for Logie? We are married now." Logan's eyes widened at his suggestive tone before Patton broke into giggles, "I'm just kidding bunny! I know you like your privacy, come on!" just like that Patton was off the bed and pulling Logan to the door. Before Patton could push him towards the door he saw the box from last night. It felt like he was back in the dark, small space. Logan was knocked out of his thoughts when he tripped through the door to the bathroom. The door slammed closed.
"Be quick, won't you Logie? I don't want the food to get cold!" Logan took in a shaky breath and steadied himself on the wall. He took in a few deep breaths before stating to change as quickly as possible. There was no way he was letting Patton see him shirtless again. Or pants-less. "Logie, come on!" He opened the door as soon as Patton yelled. He was too scared to hold out on leaving for any longer. He had to stay out of that box.
"Oh! You look so cute in that shirt Logie! I knew it would look great on you!" Logan shifted uncomfortably under Patton's gaze.
"We should- um, we should eat, Patton, right? The food could get cold."
"Right! Ok, so I know it's a little different from what you normally eat, but I thought you might like some change!" Patton moved to pull Logan to the kitchen to show him... a lot of food. Bacon, eggs, toast, sausage, all kinds of breakfast foods. "So? What do you think?"
"That's- that's a lot Patton. I really don't need this much food."
"I know Logie! I was thinking you could try some and maybe come up with something else to eat in the mornings!"
"I-I like what I've been eating. I really don't need-"
"Sit down and eat Logie. We still have plenty more to do today." Patton clearly wasn't leaving room for argument.
"Y-yes Patton." Patton smiled brightly at Logan as he slipped into the seat. He piled a bit of every food onto Logan's plate.
He tried to eat as fast as he could, he really just wanted to get back downstairs. Patton seemed to have a never ending pile of food. Patton finally decided that they could be done eating and put Logan back in the bedroom while he put everything up. Soon after Patton had dragged him to the living room.
"So! I was thinking of a few different movies," Logan could see the box in the corner of his eyes, it didn't matter where he looked, "I know you like documentaries, but I like animated movies! I thought that maybe we could alternate movies to watch, or maybe you could just decide, or I could." Patton had started pulling movies from a shelf under the tv. Now it was either keep an eye on Patton or keep an eye on the box. Which was completely irrational.
Why did he want so badly to keep an eye on the box? The box wasn't the most pressing issue.
"Um, y-you can pick Patton," there was most likely nothing Logan hadn't already seen.
"Aww, but I want you to choose! This is a reward after all. You took you punishment so well! Here," he stood up and sat the movies in Logan's lap, "choose from these! We'll probably only get to watch one. I need to get Dami for lunch!"
"Uh..." Logan shifted through the movies trying to find one they might both like, which was hard to do considering everything. There was only one animated movie, and it was Winnie the Pooh. Logan finally picked up a movie with a star cover on it. It looked the most interesting. Patton put it in the DVD player and grabbed the remote and came back over to the couch.
Logan had wedged himself in a corner of the couch, which, in hindsight, was not a very good idea. Instead being the extra layer of protection from Patton, it was turning into a box.
Box.
It was intended to keep Patton from getting to close or catching him off-guard and maybe get the message across that he didn't want Patton close. Instead Patton was cuddling up into him and trapping him in the spot. His head was burying itself in Logan's shoulder and Patton''s hands were wrapped around Logan.
This was going to be a long movie.

Shadows of the Past
TW: a slap i guess? that’s all I can think of really. If you find another one let me know!
Chapter 5: Kindness or lies?
Virgil went to dinner with the Light Sides once a week for the next month, and slowly started to trust them again even though something in the back of his mind told him their kindness was a trick. He started enjoying eating with them, and looked forward to going to their house; sometimes he even helped Patton make dinner. On the first Monday of summer, Virgil was about to leave for the Light Sides’ house, when Deceit stopped him.
“You can still go to that house, I simply want a word first.”
Virgil took his hand off the doorknob, and turned to face Deceit.
“I was thinking . . . you like that park down the street, right?”
“Yes, sir,” Virgil said, confused.
“Maybe I can escort you sometime. Or take you into town with me.”
“W-why do you want to? I thought you didn’t like me.”
Deceit shrugged. “I can grow to like you, Anxiety.”
“You can?”
“The Light Sides did, it can’t be *that* hard, can it?”
Virgil left and slowly made his way across the street, almost getting hit by a car after being too distracted to check before crossing, and didn’t greet the others when Patton let him in.
“Are you alright, Anxiety?” Logan asked.
“Huh? Uh, yeah. Yeah, I’m fine.”
“You sure?” Roman asked.
“Yup. What’s for dinner?”
“Pasta,” Patton said.
Virgil helped make dinner while Roman and Logan chose a movie.
“Are you sure you’re ok, kiddo?” Patton asked as he diced garlic, causing Virgil to almost drop the milk bottle.
“Yeah. Fine. Why?”
“You just seem off tonight. Did Deceit do something? Or one of the other Dark Sides?”
Virgil looked at the milk. “He . . . said he wants to take me to the park down the street or into town,” he said softly. “But since it’s Deceit I don’t know if he’s serious or tricking me.”
“Well, you’re allowed here now, and I’ll give you a key. Just come over whenever you want or if you can get away.”
“But the boss will say I can’t come over again.”
“He lets you out sometimes, right?”
“Yeah, to the park. And he watches me go.”
“Do you feel safe there? With Deceit?”
Virgil didn’t answer immediately. “No. But it’s a home. He gives me a roof and food and a bed, and it’s the only home I have. If I make him mad again he can take that away.”
“You’re wrong about it being the only home you have, Anxiety,” Patton said, taking the milk and pouring a bit into a bowl with a wad of turkey, an egg, and spices. “You can always come live with us.”
“I can?”
“Yes. I want you to live here, and so do the others.”
Virgil looked at Patton, who smiled at him. “You want me?”
“Yup. You’re family, Anxiety.”
“But . . . I’m a Dark Side.”
“You might belong to them, but you’re different. You’re more neutral than the other Dark Sides.”
Virgil thought about that for the duration of the prep, and pretended to need the bathroom until dinner was ready. He was silent during dinner, and when it was time for him to go home, Roman insisted of going with him.
“Why do you want to?” Virgil asked as they crossed the street.
“Just do.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
“I know.”
Virgil frowned, and when Cruelty opened the door Roman pushed past him, much to the confusion of both Dark Sides.
“What the hell, kid?”
“I don’t know,” Virgil said. “He wouldn’t let me come alone.”
“Hey, Anxiety! Show me to your room!”
“Might as well,” Cruelty said, waving Virgil into the house.
The boy sighed and led Roman upstairs and into the first room to the left. “This is it.”
Roman walked in and looked around, taking in the closet, the small bed, a broken dresser, and a thin rug under the bed. “Hey, you can see our house!”
“Yup. But I don’t know where the boss is or if he’s even home, but he won’t be happy to see-“
“What’s this, Anxiety?”
They both turned to see Deceit standing in the doorway, glaring at Roman.
“I- um, you see . . . I . . . he . . .” Deceit silenced him with his own hand with a flick of his wrist.
“What are you doing here, Roman?”
“I wanted to see his room.”
“And you have. Now leave.”
Roman didn’t move for a second, but he obeyed and closed the front door behind him as he left the house.
“Come along, Anxiety. I want you to go for a walk with me.”
Virgil followed him out of the house, and they walked in the opposite direction of the park.
“Tell me, Anxiety. Do you like that house?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Do you wish to live there?”
“They’re nice, but . . . your house is my home. It’s the only one I’ve known.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
Virgil hesitated before nodding. “Our house is scary and dark . . . theirs is bright and warm and smells like cookies.”
“Which do you prefer?”
“Theirs.”
For a moment Deceit looked like he was going to strike him, but clasped his hands behind his back and continued walking.
“I will make your life at my house better, Virgil.”
“Really? Does that mean I can eat every night?”
“Yes.”
Virgil smiled, and spent the rest of their walk answering Deceit’s questions about what happens and what they eat on the nights Virgil goes to dinner at the Light Sides’ house.
As the days passed, Virgil drew three pictures, one for each of the Light Sides, and the next night he was supposed to go to their house Deceit offered to go out for dinner.
“But I’m going over to their house tonight.”
“You can go tomorrow. How often do we go out to eat?”
“They’ll understand,” Cunning said.
“I suppose . . .” Virgil said, unsure whether he should believe them or not.
“Wonderful!” Deceit said. “Shall we?”
Still unsure of his choice, Virgil got into Deceit’s car and looked through the rear window as they drove down the street to see Roman watching in the middle of the street.
“Sorry, Roman,” he said softly, turning around and starting to put his seatbelt on before Cunning stopped him.
“You won’t need that, kid.”
“But if we crash- “
“We won’t crash. Just leave it off.”
“But- “
Cunning pressed his face against the window. “I *said* you don’t need it, brat.”
Virgil squirmed under his hand, and Deceit removed the hand.
“We need the boy to trust us, Cunning.”
“Sorry, boss.”
“Let me out. I wanna go home.”
“We’re too far away to walk, Virgil.”
Virgil sat in silence for the rest of the ride to the restaurant, and had lost his appetite after Cunning’s attack. He only ate the cheeseburger and French fries Deceit had ordered him because the man was watching him as he ate his own meal.
As soon as they got home, Virgil ran across the street before either Deceit of Cunning could grab him and hopped the fence, knocking on the back door.
“Oh, so you decided to come anyway?” Roman said when he opened the door.
“Deceit never lets me go out to dinner with him,” Virgil said. “I tried to tell him I was coming over here.”
“Not hard enough. Patton made everything you like for no reason!”
Virgil covered his eyes with his arm, and jumped when the door slammed. He sighed, wiping his tears away, and slowly went home.
“Virgil?”
“I’m fine, Procrastination. I’ll be in my room if the boss needs me.” He went upstairs and locked himself in his room, sitting on his bed and looking out of the window at the other house. “Sorry, Patton,” he said softly, curling into a tight ball and wrapping himself in his wings.
The next morning, Virgil was woken up by someone knocking on the door, and sat up when he heard Logan’s voice.
“I was asked to come retrieve Anxiety.”
“By whom, if I may ask,” Deceit answered.
“Patton.”
“And if I refuse?”
“He said he would be angry.”
“Fine, fine. His room is the first one upstairs to the left.”
Virgil jumped out of bed when he heard footsteps on the stairs, and soon Logan opened the door.
“Come on, Anxiety. You were invited to breakfast.”
“Is Patton upset? I didn’t mean to make him sad.”
“All is well. Come along, now.”
Virgil followed him downstairs, but Deceit stopped him at the door.
“You will return straight after breakfast.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And at some point today, you can go to the park.”
Virgil smiled and followed Logan across the street.
“Ah, so he actually came to breakfast.”
“Be quiet, Roman,” Logan snapped, leading Virgil to the table.
“I’m sorry, Patton,” Virgil said as he sat down across from him.
“Don’t worry about it. You’re here now and that’s what matters,” he said, looking at Roman.
