Vance tugged at the collar of his shirt, already wondering if he'd overdressed for this first meeting.
He cast a glance around the café, and he shifted awkwardly in his seat while he cradled the black (burnt) coffee in his hands. He'd wanted to conduct the meeting at a nicer place, but he didn't want to make the kid uncomfortable by flashing his wealth too early in the…whatever this was.
Arrangement, his stupid brain supplied. It's not a relationship.
Vance tugged on his collar again. A café in May was a lot more stifling than he'd expected, and definitely not ideal for his $1200 suit, which seemed to be hell-bent on suffocating him before the kid even got here.
I need to stop calling him a kid, Vance thought as he took another small sip of the crappy coffee. He's twenty-four; that's not exactly underage.
Though it did feel a bit weird, when their age gap was pretty noticeable. Would this even work? Was it even possible for this to really scratch that itch, that need to just…provide?
Fuck, he's here.
Vance inhaled sharply, and nearly choked on his own tongue as he watched the kid Finn look all around the café until his gaze landed on Vance at the back in one of the booths.
The relief he saw on the young man's face was practically tangible. Vance saw him visibly let out a sigh, his shoulders dipped in obvious relief, and a smile spread across his face.
Vance didn't blame him at all for that look. After all, who would believe Vance's offer if it just popped up at random in an inbox? An offer which his best friend Michael had told him later was way over the top, but if it got Finn here, Vance wasn't about to complain.
Finn's hands moved in a complicated series of motions before he abruptly stopped and just gestured to the counter, implying that he planned to get a drink first. Vance blinked in confusion, but nodded and waved a hand, hoping the take your time gesture would be understood.
Finn seemed to relax even further at that, and quickly turned to the line at the counter. There were two people ahead of Finn, and it gave Vance plenty of time to admire the handsome young man.
Finn was tall, maybe round six feet, with brown hair tied up in a bun as was the latest trend. Vance used to think that it looked cheesy on any man, but Finn somehow made it work. His face, somehow bearing a strong jaw and classically handsome features while concurrently it appeared soft and sweet. Finn was recently clean-shaven, but still bore a little bit of stubble, like the razor he used was probably as dull as the accounting department at Vance's company.
And his eyes—God, his eyes—he’d never seen such gorgeous, stormy, blue-grey eyes before.
In contrast to the young man's handsome features, the clothes Finn had chosen to wear were honestly tragic. When Finn had written him back, he'd asked Vance if he needed to wear anything special because his clothes “weren't very nice”, but seeing it with his own eyes, he now understood what Finn had meant.
The T-shirt Finn wore was plain black V-neck, but the back was spattered with holes that didn't look like a deliberate fashion choice. The jeans were threadbare and practically falling apart, and Vance noted a huge rip at the back just below the young man's ass, which displayed his black underwear for all the world to see.
His shoes seemed to be some sort of big box store knockoff brand, but they too were falling apart, with big holes in the front and along the sides, and they appeared to be just barely holding together.
And then, Finn pulled out his 'wallet', which was just a plastic bag filled with change. Vance watched sadly as Finn carefully counted out the right amount for his drink of choice, and he found himself suddenly wishing that he'd decided to pay for Finn's drink instead.
