Day 5-7 (January 24th-26th, 2018)

Perhaps you are wondering why I combined day 5 until day 7. However, I believe that some of you would know about it. I did this because I had an exactly same activities on those days. Teaching. That was all. I knew it was not exactly the same because the materials I taught were different on every single day. According to my observation, the students there still did not know how to write English words. I could relate this because they had a different alphabetical order in Thai compared to the Greek. This was the fundamental problem that I had to solve. So, I decided to focus on teaching words or vocabulary in English, both reading and writing. They also needed to listen and repeat pronunciation they heard. It went well. The students were so excited, and they enjoyed the classroom activities. I added some games in the middle of the teaching and learning activities. I started the lessons with teaching vocabulary with respect to foods, animals, directions, and facial expressions (you can contact me to have my lesson plan). I used the last lesson for my evaluation test. I would tell you later about that. The point was I had the same day teaching the children, yet I enjoyed it so much because I love the kids, and I like teaching as well.

Here are some general information about Pak Khlong Song School：

There are two levels of education, they are primary school and elementary school.

The academic system is same with the other schools in Thailand.

There are only four teachers for the elementary school because they follow the instruction from the government. I heard that the government will allow one teacher occupied for 20 students at school. Unfortunately, the students in Pak Khlong Song elementary school are not many. I taught 23 students from three grades (five students from 4th grade, ten students from 5th grade, and eight students from 6th grade). It was good for me because the less the students, the easier they can be handled. For the kindergarten, there is only one teacher. So, Ira and I had to help her everyday for an hour.

They use printed books and also videos for the instructional process. I think because they do not have many instructors, they need to let the students learn from the videos. Sometimes, they combined the students from different grades because there is no teacher to handle the other class. This was also the reason why I had to teach full time. I helped the teacher to handle the classroom.

They evaluate the students periodically. Moreover, the students also have to follow the examination handled by the government.

The teaching plan, in this case is English, is systematically organized by the director. I thought that she is the English teacher because I often saw her teaching English lessons to the students. The focus of the teaching material is structure and grammar, how to compose a perfect sentence in English. I also tried to tell them about grammar, but I did not use grammar translation method as my core technique. I tried my best to apply communicative teaching and learning and focused on the students center, so the students were the ones who always spoke up in the classroom.

The Pedagogical Contents

The teaching method that I used was audio lingual, and I also used communicative language teaching. I focused to drill the correct pronunciation, so that the students can imitate it perfectly. I also used the one which is applied on that school. It was Brain-based learning. So, I focused on letting the students think first about the materials that were going to discuss. Meaning that they had to give their opinion first before getting the right answers from the teacher. It could build their critical thinking, and it also increased their ability to produce innovative and creative ideas.

We usually used everything that could be used in the classroom as the sources of learning. When we talked about the stuffs inside the classroom, we used everything inside the classroom to be discussed. We also used television, internet, YouTube, and anything that could help the teaching and learning classroom to run well.

Usually I assessed my students directly from their daily activities in the classroom. It could be from the way they were answering the questions, asking questions, helping their friends, speaking English fluently, finishing their tasks, winning the games, and many other activities. I also concerned about their attitude outside the classroom because I lived there, so it was easy for me to evaluate them.

Teaching Plan

Before going the classroom, I tried to observed and learned about the curriculum in Thai. I thought it was quite different from Indonesian curriculum. Perhaps because I had never seen the curriculum for elementary students before, I did not feel familiar with the curriculum. I usually teach Lower Grade and Upper Grade students. I was making the lesson plan based on Thai curriculum. If you would like to know it, you can contact me for obtaining the lesson plan.

The teaching plan was also like I told you before. It was quite same with the Indonesian version because it was begun with pre activities (warming up and brain storming) which were followed by the main activities (learning the materials, doing tasks, and playing games), and it was ended with the post activities (evaluation and feedback).

Observation on teacher

Before teaching, I had to arrange my lesson plan based on the curriculum. I also had to compose the instructional process based on the indicators and the objectives, so that the core competence can be achieved by the students. The teaching and learning activities should support the indicators and objectives. I also had to make the assessment test that surely could measure the students' achievement.

I usually made my own lessons. It was hard for me to trust the internet, that was why I never took the material from online resources while I was teaching in Thailand. Sometimes, I just took the pictures from the internet, while at the other time I draw my own pictures on a piece of paper or on a whiteboard. After finishing those masterpiece, I could be relieved to step into the classroom.

When I was in the classroom, the students usually greeted me first, then I greeted them back. I asked their presence and their story. Then I usually began the class by showing a flash card, asking the students to guess what picture they saw. After that, I tried to pronounce the correct pronunciation of the words from the pictures and asked them to repeat after me. Moreover, the students would try to repeat the question from the teacher like 'what is this?' And they also had to answer it in a full sentence 'this is candy'. After that I tried to write the sentences on the whiteboard, and the students copy those sentences on their notebook. The activities would be continued with doing the worksheet or playing games. They also would try to evaluate their friends' work.

The evaluation occurred at the end of the session as well as the feedback. The students usually got the score or the watermark from the teaching indicating that they had achieved the lesson that day.

Teaching Practice

The students first gave their ideas and opinions on something showed by the teacher, whether it was picture, drawing, or video. After that, they would be given the materials. For example, if they learned about vocabulary, they had to guess the words first based on the picture before getting the right answer from the teacher. Then, the students tried to pronounce the words correctly. After that they can learn how to speak a full sentence I'm English, practice it individually, and work in pairs. There was also a game that was still related to the material they learned. They also did their worksheet beforehand. This would be explained in detail on the day 26 in my evaluation day.
