Hello, I am Darylle Joy Gevero, a BSIT-Drafting from SKSU-Isulan. I really love mesmerizing memories especially those experiences from such events who shaped me of who am I today.

Want to know what my favorite holidays as a child was?

Since my family was originated from Pampanga, Kapampangan’s traditions focus more on celebrating festivals. Personally, my favorite among holidays as a child was the Giant Lantern Festival. The festival showcases the biggest, most colorful, most innovative and most meaningful lanterns. Each barangay of the city creates a giant lantern to showcase their talent and craftsmanship. We usually head to San Fernando for Ligligan Parul (Giant Lantern Festival), which is held at the Paskuhan Village every year. Aside from the festival’s concept, I just wanted to share that the giant lanterns symbolized unity for the area's residents from the concept design to labor. It really amazed me seeing those giant and incredible lanterns made by our talented and creative crafters, and I really appreciate how it signifies how creative and united Kapampangans are.

In related to this matter, I can say that traditions represent a critical piece of our culture. They help form the structure and foundation of our families and our society. They remind us that we are part of a history that defines our past, shapes who we are today and who we are likely to become.  Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. Once we ignore the meaning of our traditions, we're in danger of damaging the underpinning of our identity.

As for now, as an adult, celebrating ang valuing festivals is the tradition that I really wanted to keep alive.  What’s yours then?

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The city government here is stepping up its efforts to sustain its brands as the country’s “Home of the Giant Lanterns” and “Christmas Capital.”

In partnership with the SM Development Corporation, the city government will put up a center that will showcase the centuries-old tradition of giant lantern making.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for the construction of the Giant Lantern and Tourist Information Center at the former Paskuhan Village.

The two-story center, which has a total floor area of 500 square meters, will sit on a 5,000-square meter land area donated to the city government by Premier Central, Inc. (PCI), a subsidiary of SM Prime Holdings Corporation.

“The project that we have is more than just a building or infrastructure. Mas nakikita po natin ito sa mas malawak na perspektibo. Isang bunga ng ating trabaho na pagbuklurin po ang ating mga komunidad sa pamamagitan ng pagbuhay muli sa ating kultura at tradisyon (We see this more from a broader perspective. A fruit of our work to unite our communities through the revival of our culture and tradition),” Mayor Edwin Santiago said in official social media post.

Santiago said the building will house an exhibit space, a museum, "pasalubong" shop, library and archives center, an office for the city’s tourism department, and a conference room.

The remaining portion of the land area will be built with an amphitheater that could hold different activities, he added.

City engineer Anele David said the construction of the center and amphitheater will be free-of-charge and will be shouldered by the said private firm.

“Ang lote at gusali po ay ipinagkaloob sa atin ng ating katuwang na kumpanya kaya ang partisipasyon po natin sa tuwing makakatanggap tayo ng donasyon ay ang maintenance at operating expenses. Sa construction naman po ay magsasagawa tayo ng monitoring sa compliance nila sa ating mga alituntunin (The lot and building were donated to us by our partner company. Thus, our participation every time we receive donations is the maintenance and operation expenses. In the construction, we will conduct monitoring in compliance with our regulations,” David said.

City tourism officer Ching Pangilinan, meanwhile, said the new building will become an image of the original Paskuhan Village.

“In keeping true to its legacy and as part of our Kapampangan heritage, through our city mayor, we were able to get a donation for the property. With that, kahit na wala na yung Paskuhan na dati nating kilala, mabubuhay muli ito sa isang panibagong paraan, mas contemporary, at mas akma sa panahon na ito na hindi nakakalimutan yung kasaysayan at tradisyon natin bilang Fernandinos (even without the Paskuhan we once knew, it will be revived in a new way, more contemporary, and more appropriate to this time without forgetting our history and traditions as Fernandinos),” Pangilinan said.

On July 2, 2020, the city government and PCI formally signed a deed of donation for the said land area and two projects as part of the amicable settlement between the firm and the city.

This served as a “go signal��� for the city government and SMDC to begin the development in the area, including several meetings for the building’s design and details and the planning for its groundbreaking.

“The future Giant Lantern and Tourist Information Center will become a beacon for Filipinos and the rest of the world to witness the glitter and beauty of your city, your rich heritage and culture, and the Fernandinos’ ingenuity, artistry, and craftsmanship,” SMDC president Jose Mari Banzon said.

The Giant Lantern and Tourist Information Center is expected to be launched before the year ends. (PNA)

Christmas at CWC

I think that one of the challenges this year was deciding whether to put up the decorations or not because one thing is for sure, it will draw attention on social media and people will flock to get that picture-perfect to upload on Instagram despite the pandemic.

Last year, I also featured here the Christmas village at the capitol. You can check out my entry “Paskuhan sa Kapitolyo”. I never thought that they will be recycling the decorations for this year. They only changed the venue to CWC this time. I really think that it was last minute to put them all there. 

Anyway, aside from blogging purposes, I really went to see the lights to keep my insanity intact. The lights are calming. They have this sort of magic that just by seeing the lights and the Christmas village, you tend to be lost in the moment and forget all the things bothering on your mind. This blog entry is a bit personal since I went there to comfort myself.

This year has been rough for all of us as we face this pandemic. Most of the time, we were at are comforts of our own home for our safety. We longed for the outside and something to inspire us to be creative and motivated. We yearned for social interactions. We had to put things on hold for the meantime. 

It is a sad reality though that we all have been staying indoors most of the time and been trying to avoid gatherings but one of the things that can make us go out there to feel Christmas is by visiting Christmas villages. We longed for the outside and how things used to be.

Under the new normal we learn to adapt, it includes practicing social distancing, wearing face masks and face shields outside as well as frequent sanitizing of hands using alcohol or washing it with soap. As much as possible we were told to avoid crowded places yet here we are. 

I feel like the days just passed by too fast this year because of the pandemic. Yet here we. Everyone is wandering aimlessly on purpose, sailing off without a map and trying to find ourselves if we still have a place that we can be happy and feel safe. To be honest, this is one of my favorite photo taken on that day. 

This part of the decoration really reminds me of a scene from Frozen 2 when Elsa sang Show Yourself. I think that I am also drawn here because of it. Would have been perfect to take an photo here too or do a reenactment of Elsa’s Show Yourself here. 

Whatever our reasons are for visiting this place, may it bring light and hope amid this dark time. Also, do not forget to be safe. Practice social distancing. Wear face masks and face shields. Sanitize your hands with alcohol and avoid touching the decorations to prevent the virus that is still out there.

TACLOBAN CITY – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed some 1,643 policemen to ensure a safe Christmas celebration in Eastern Visayas.

Lt. Col. Ma. Bella Rentuaya, PNP Eastern Visayas spokesperson said policemen have been assigned on Wednesday in assistance hubs, churches, malls, public markets, firecrackers display zones, community firecrackers zones, terminals, seaports, and airport.

“They will secure public areas until Jan. 6. If necessary, they will be augmented with standby forces from regional headquarters, provincial headquarters, and thousands of village watchmen,” Rentuaya said in a phone interview.

The deployment is part of the “Ligtas Paskuhan” campaign every Christmas season to minimize crimes during the holiday season.

This year, policemen will also help enforce minimum health standards in public places to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) such as wearing face masks and face shields and maintaining a safe physical distance.

The PNP regional office has reminded anew all police commanders about the operational guidelines and procedures to be undertaken in maintaining order, law enforcement, and providing public safety services during the traditional nine-day “Simbang Gabi”.

“Simbang Gabi” is a devotional nine-day series of dawn masses practiced by Filipino Catholics culminating on Christmas day. (PNA)
