Portland, Oregon, USA, November 13, 2024
So today concludes the last adventure I will take for 2025. Portland has been an interesting trip, very much worth it though to be honest the chances of me coming back ever again are probably low but if the opportunity ever presented itself I would definitely come back. When I mean I am not coming back or in that tone it is more that Portland is not quite as easy to get to than let’s say Seattle. More so I am not sure if I want to come back to the USA for awhile given how much unrest is out here right now, not only that the Canadian dollar is the shits here. More so than usual.
Portland reminds me of Victoria to be honest; slower pace than a place like Seattle, many old buildings, a serious homelessness and drug problem, craft beer and overall hipster culture. Vancouver and Seattle I think have more in common in they are speedier and more metropolitan.
We all know how this trip started, I completely under estimated how much time I was going to need to not only get to the airport but get through the security checkpoint. I gave myself 80 minutes but I really should have been there 3 hours ahead. If I had I would have probably got more done sooner in Portland than I did. Though to be honest I got everything I wanted to do anyway.
Saturday became a write off spent taking the slowest route to Portland via bus, didn’t even get to enjoy the Pacific Northwest view because the sun went down before we even got to Seattle.
When I got to Portland I immediately felt a little uneasy. Homeless everywhere, people drunk and partying. It felt like I was in crackdown downtown Vancouver so I got my meanest look on and just tried to find my way to my hotel as best I could.
My hotel room was nice and spacious but it was very aged. Could tell it was older than me and the noise around me even at midnight when I arrived was loud but it did not take me long to fall asleep.
My first true day in Portland was overcast, had a eggs benny then hit the ground running trying to Jayne hat as many statues as I could. I have gotten much better at plotting and marking where I need to go and locate statues after Japan. Knowing I would not have any really strong access to wifi I knew I had to make sure I was as accurate in plotting locations as I could and it paid off, I was able to get 80% of my Jayne hatting done that day and over the afternoon. I did come to discover though that the battery I brought with me did not work anymore. I do not know why but it is always the USB connections that wear out on these things. This proved to be problematic for me as both my iPhone and old iPad both go through batteries real quick. I mean I have had my iPad on for a couple minutes now and it is already at 97%.
I decided to try a Portland brewery and get something to eat while my phone was charging in my room.
To be honest I am was rather let down by the craft beer scene here in Portland. I was long led to believe that Portland was the craft beer Mecca of the world or North America at least. If it was at one point I really don’t think so now as I did not see anywhere close to as many breweries as I thought I would see, Vancouver greatly out numbers Portland in breweries, Victoria has less but for per capita I think Victoria may have more.
I will say though that Portland has good IPAs and I normally hate IPAs but most if not all of the beer you can drink there is IPAs, this city is definitely all about that style as there are often 2-3 IPAs at every brewery over every other kind.
I capped my Sunday off by going to a Portland Trailblazers game. Had my first hefe which was exceedingly over priced. Portland also got the shit beat out of them by the Grizzlies but I didn’t see the end as I weirdly dozed off. Can’t believe I dozed off at such a noisy venue but I was there past my normal bed time and I did have quite a bit to drink. I ate a lot though this trip, I barely spent money on any items for myself. All of the money I spent this trip was on food and experiences. I made my way back to my room and day one was done.
Monday, the last day of my 30s was much more chill but no less busy as I explored the more wooded areas of Portland as I tackled the statues that were on the outskirts. The weather was absolutely shitty this day but I felt like I would take advantage of the shitty weather thinking I would have the trails to myself. I was clearly mistaken as there were plenty of people out walking and jogging. Should have expected that people accustomed to this weather would not be swayed from it on a ordinary day. I didn’t get as much Jayne hatting done but I was able to find a statue to be the perfect send off for my long time travel companion side bag to be part of.
After my Japan trip it was becoming abundantly clear that the side bad I have had with me since my first trip to Europe was starting to wear and break. It is still totally intact however the strap is bound to snap off someday and there are holes starting to form in the corners. I love that bag way too much to watch it waste away and become un useable some day so Portland was to be the last trip I would make with it. F probably the easiest trip it’s ever taken as I barely carried anything in it outside of the hats, tablet and my travel note book. Last night on my last night in Portland I didn’t have anything in it but my typical tourist magnet I bought and sanitizer. It did hold my coat for an hour or so but easiest trip it’s had.
I am going to miss having my bag with me but I would regret it more if I was traveling out of country only for the strap to break suddenly. It represents the best part of my life and what fills my bucket which is travel. My new side bag has great shoes to fill but I bought a more professional looking on that I think will be more user friendly and functional than my old one which was very much hand made (and made well). Also more secure as one could easily pick pocket from my old bag where this one won’t be that easy.
Nonetheless after giving my bag a moment in the spotlight with the Jayne hats I went to the last outskirts stop of Jayne hatting and now I was 90% done all of the hatting. At that moment I thought 98% but as per usual when I wasn’t looking for statues was when the statues found me and in the most miserable moments of rain too. Nonetheless I Jayne hatted all of those to be 98% done.
Like the last day I went to a brewery and had lots of food and beer before I went to the Hollywood Theatre to see Anora. It was a good movie which engaged me but before I knew it I dozed off again. It felt so embarrassing as I missed the ending. I loved the Hollywood Theatre. It seemed much older than the Rio and more serving of its age. Nonetheless I returned back to my room and went to sleep. This was a stat holiday and a Monday so there was nothing on for anything in Portland so that was the end of my 30s.
It is funny and fitting though, the first day of my 30s was short as I passed out quick from my body trying to get back on pacific standard time. My last day was short simply because I dozed off due to having too much food and booze in me but also as someone who is normally asleep by 6:30 pm.
Portland gave me a beautiful day for my 40th birthday or at least most of the day was beautiful with sunny skies. I finished Jayne hatting my last 2 statues and spent much of the day walking the streets of Portland, both the good and the bad parts.
Following that I went bar hoping trying beer in 2-3 different breweries. I was half way through the day and I was bored and desperate to do something worthwhile on my birthday. I did not want to go see a movie or go to a basketball game because I knew I would just doze off again as I was very much full of beer and food. With that I remembered on my way to the hotel on my first night noticing a arcade on my way there and decided to at the very least go into there to sober up. I wound up spending quite a few hours there playing a Time Crisis 5 along with an old arcade game I loved as a kid that I can’t remember the name of. Mid way through they asked for my id to make sure I was old enough to buy alcohol. I was hoping that the lady would notice it was my birthday and say happy birthday but instead she just grinned and gave an arm band showing I was over 21.
I was hoping that I would be more sociable here or be able to talk to women here but unfortunately all the women here had boyfriends and what other women were there did not seem to be interested in getting approached by me.
Nonetheless I had fun and was still very conscious. The night was still young at least for most people, not so much me. I decided to go back to 10 Barrel Brewing as they had the best pretzel and I had that and a dunkelweizen. As per usual I celebrated my birthday alone and had a drink and pretzel to myself before going to sleep.
So here I am now, many many many hours early at the airport because I did not want to make the same mistake twice. I did not know Portland’s security checkpoints or anything so I did not want to risk being stranded here as getting back to Vancouver from Portland would be much harder than getting to Portland from Vancouver.
In irony the security checkpoint was really easy, no line ups and super quick. The complete opposite of what it was on Saturday. That being said the US I imagine is more strict with people coming into the USA than people leaving. Not only that it is a Wednesday morning versus a Saturday morning where everyone was traveling. Far less people travelling on a Wednesday especially in Portland.
Whatever it gives me time to write everything down but also take stock in what will probably be a rather important year in my life.
I am not looking forward to returning to work, returning to Vancouver. The workplace drama is getting too much for me and I can’t say I can stand it anymore. I wish to leave it at that but something has to give soon. Me and my boss simply don’t mesh well. He is not a fan of my straight forward and by the book nature. I am not a fan of his impulsive, uncoordinated, look over function, disregard for protocol or me in general attitude. I am pushing back more and more with him. I don’t care if I lose my job. A career there is not worth having to put up with a guy like him. Rant over.
If there are any silver linings my coworker whom I am covering for is returning next week. Not only that I have 4 weeks left before my holidays in Newfoundland.
I am glad of how I was able to spread out time off better this year, I needed to with the boss I have and shit I put up with with him. Montreal was perfectly timed as my frustration with him was getting to a higher pitch. April in Victoria I would have preferred elsewhere but Victoria was infinitely cheaper at that time of the year than anywhere else and more available, I needed to save money plus everywhere else was too expensive by the time I was ready to make a choice.
By the time August came I needed Japan desperately. By November this trip came just in time to diffuse tension I have with my boss and now whatever shit happens in the next four weeks whatever because I am gone for much of December. I am fortunately to have stuff like this but even this I do not understand why I have a boss that does what he does with me. I really don’t want this to be a work blog post. This blog is all about my adventures and sharing my stories with strangers or passers by but my work stressed has consumed much of my life in year 39 and much of year 38. I fear it will year 40 too but I can’t see it lasting longer than that. I hope
As for when or where I will travel in 2025 I will think about now. I certainly have plenty of time to do so with 3 hours to spare. Will definitely give it a walk.
I a, seriously eyeing Fort McMurray for April. Yes it is somewhere I have been to but it is very close and it is a part of me. I sincerely think I will be leaving the west coast by the end of 2025 or at least hoping I will. It may be the last time I ever go to Fort McMurray again. Either there or Edmonton. Feels like a waste but it is affordable and not only that I have friends and family there and again same reasons I may not come back to the west coast for a very long time or anywhere close to the frequency I see places now. Like Fort Mac Edmonton is a part of me the same way Victoria is. Victoria could very well be on the board too for the exact same reasons and for how utterly more affordable it is to go to. In April I am able to spend the Easter long weekend their room and transport for the price of a ok hotel in Edmonton.
I am apprehensive of making a move on where though as if things go as fast as I hope I may not even be in the west coast by April. It could go either way. There is also Seattle but I don’t have much desire to see Seattle again anytime soon, not because I don’t want to but why?
If I am still in the west by April I will more than likely still be around for May. I would like to try and get back to Whitehorse one more time and Jayne hat the place like I should have years back. I would then again if still in Vancouver go to Japan one more time but focus on the south more but I may target it in November and hope upon hope that I will live in Newfoundland shortly after. If things go the way I hope I should be in Newfoundland before summer or after but who bloody knows at this point.
There is another thing to consider, AC/DC is probably touring next year in North America. That may very well change the course of how I travel next year as well. If they were to tour and I would have to imagine this would be close to their last tour (thought that 10 years ago too) where they go would dictate where I would go as I imagine I will be going to the Vancouver and Edmonton shows. Maybe even more depending on when and where. They would all be costly too so it would mean less travel but for AC/DC it would be more forgivable. As you can tell there are so many variables right now to consider that it would be hard to really think it wise to pin down something. I am going to spend the next few hours pondering where but probably won’t make a decision till I am in Newfoundland. If AC/DC does tour it will more than likely be in the summer time to the big football stadium crowds so if they are doing something or plotting something soon would make the most sense. Stay tuned.
I enjoyed my time in Portland, if it came to traveling here again next year I would not bat an eye about it, I would embrace it. I would probably spend less time in the downtown area and more in the arena district and broadway area as that is where many of the breweries are. Portland was a good host to me. Was Portland my first choice to celebrate my last days of my 30s and to usher in my 40s? No but it is no where close to the last place it would have chosen (Vancouver). The city treated me well, decent weather mostly and a chill time which I can’t complain.
Japan would have maybe been more epic but given where I am with other things it would have been more stressful and still as lonely. Portland made sense and it worked. Portland may very well be my new favourite US city. I felt more at home here than Seattle and that place I felt more at home at than LA. I would like to explore the US more but the Canadian dollar sucks too much and many of the major places I would like to go to are too far away from Vancouver. If I lived in Newfoundland getting to the east coast cities would make much more sense and be much easier but till then it simply doesn’t from a distance, time and money standpoint.
Thank you Portland for letting a Canuck like me close out his 30s and usher in his 40s in a chill easy going atmosphere.

Don't forget you can follow us on Twitter or Dreamwidth for quick links to updates! You can also reach the concomm at pacificwriterscon [at] gmail at any time. General Information: When is Pacificon 2020? April 4 and 5, 2020, with an optional movie night and other activities on the evening of April 3. Where will it take place? Full membership is $85, and is limited to 100 attendees. You must be at least 18 years old to attend. The current list of attendees will be posted soon. If you need some help with the registration fee, check out the financial assistance post. "Bitchin' Party"? Seriously? "Bitchin' Party" became the unofficial name of the con after some of the concomm had the misfortune of watching a gloriously bad TV show called Dante's Cove. Don't worry, we're not using it unironically.* *except that some of us totally are Hotel Information: The hotel is the Issaquah Hilton Garden Inn, located at 1800 Gilman Blvd, Issaquah, WA (here on Google Maps). The front desk number is 1-425-837-3600, and the fax number is 1-425-837-3635. How much does it cost? The con rate $124/king and $144/two queens, plus tax. A small number of cots will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis upon check-in. How do I reserve a room? You must reserve your room by March 3, 2020 in order to receive the con rate and be in the room block with all the other cool kids con attendees. If you're looking for a roommate, we'll link that thread once we get closer to the con. To reserve a room online: 1. Go here. 2. Select your arrival/departure dates, your number of rooms/guests, your preferred bed configuration, and then provide your information. Our group code is PWC402. (Note that you can only add ONE additional person's name to your reservation, so give some thought to who is likely to arrive first. It can also be changed later if necessary.) A credit card is required to hold the reservation, but no deposit is required. (They do have a disclaimer that they can place a hold on your card for the full amount of your stay, but FWIW, we've never seen that happen.) NOTE: If you have ANY question or problem with the reservation process (for example, if you did not get the correct rate quoted to you, or it says it doesn't have your preferred bed configuration available), PLEASE call the toll-free number at 1-877-STAY-HGI and talk to a real person (tell them you're reserving for the Pacific Writers' Conference). If for some reason that still doesn't resolve things, contact us at pacificwriterscon [at] gmail [dot] com and we will contact the hotel. To reserve over the phone: Call the main reservation line at 1-877-STAY-HGI and tell them you're reserving for the Pacific Writers' Conference (that is our sekkrit spy codename to civilians!). Make sure you specify whether you'd like a king room or two queens. Again, if you have any trouble—if they tell you our block is full or that the con rate isn't available—contact pacificwriterscon [at] gmail and we will contact the hotel. Hotel Amenities Room amenities include: - mini fridge - microwave - 42-inch HDTV - FREE wireless high-speed internet throughout the hotel Hotel amenities include: - on-site restaurant (including a bar) - room service - pool and hot tub - fitness center - free parking - complimentary shuttle available for transport within a five-mile radius of the hotel Check-in starts at 3 p.m., check-out is at noon. The con will be providing hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar on Saturday night, a full breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning, and some snacks and beverages throughout both days. You are, however, welcome to eat or drink whatever you like in your own room. Area Amenities Within walking distance of the hotel, you'll find several fast food options, a couple of restaurants, a grocery store, a Starbucks (of course), and a liquor store. Within easy driving distance and within the range of the complimentary hotel shuttle, you'll find practically anything else you might need, including lots of food options, Costco, drugstores, Target, various banks, an organic grocery store, etc. Maps will be included with your welcome packet when you arrive. If you want to check out the lay of the land before then, Google Maps is your friend (see the hotel link above). Con events The con will officially run from 9 a.m. on April 4th until 5 p.m. on April 5th, with an optional movie night and other activities to get the ball rolling on the evening of April 3rd, and post-con movie-watching on the evening of the 5th. Panels Panels are being organized by the ConComm, with help from you. Final list of panels will be linked here once they are available. Always check out the panels tag for the latest info! Vidshow There will be a vidshow on Saturday night, details TBD. Check out the vidshow tag for the latest info! Room parties Room parties are totally encouraged (as long as noise is kept to a respectful level that won't get us in trouble with other guests/the hotel)! Please note, however: NO alcohol is allowed in the main con ballroom (except via the cash bar on Saturday night). Feel free to drink/eat whatever you want in your sleeping rooms. A list of things we will not have, because we are all casual and stuff: No celebrity guests (y'all are rockstars enough for us) No art show No dealers No free meals besides hors d'oeuvres on Saturday and breakfast on Saturday & Sunday What we do have is LOVE, people. SO MUCH LOVE. And bacon! Getting to the con: By air Airport You'll probably want to fly into Seattle-Tacoma (Sea-Tac) International Airport. Getting from the airport to the hotel The hotel is about 20 miles from Sea-Tac. The most affordable option is to take the light rail and connect to a bus; the light rail will get you from the airport to downtown Seattle for $2.50, and from downtown, there are several buses to Issaquah (average $2.50 fare) that will drop you off at the Issaquah Transit Center on 17th Ave NW, less than half a mile from the hotel (see the Metro Online Site for more info). Otherwise: - Taxi (in the vicinity of $55-$65 plus tip), Uber, or Lyft - Shuttle service - When the con gets closer, we'll open up a thread for anyone who wants to try to coordinate cab/shuttle-sharing with other attendees. - Rent a car (see below for driving directions) Getting to the con: Not by air The thread for roadtrip coordination will be posted closer to the con and linked here. By train or bus Amtrak and Greyhound both have stations in downtown Seattle. From there, you're about a 20-minute drive away from Issaquah. See below for driving directions. Local bus service is, as I said, not all that comprehensive, but it is pretty easy from downtown--the Metro Online site is here if you'd like to check out your options. By car: driving directions - As long as you are not east of Issaquah (including from Sea-Tac airport), take (as applicable) I-5 N, I-5 S, I-405 N, or I-405 S to I-90 E (toward Spokane). If you're east of Issaquah, take I-90 W. - From I-90, take exit 15 (WA-900 / 17th Ave NW). - Turn right at the light onto 17th Ave NW. - About a block down, turn right onto Gilman Blvd (by the Burger King). - The hotel will be about a block ahead of you on your right, behind the John L. Scott building. The hotel is here on Google Maps. Getting to the con: Other Travel by War Rig, Bifrost, tour bus, dog sled, Goat Van, stargate, wormhole, battlestar, firefly, TARDIS, Leviathan, Chevy Impala, Mystery Machine, or similar to be arranged by individual attendees. Roommates, rideshares, and airport transportation coordination Roommate, rideshare, and cab/Lyft/shuttle-share threads will be posted closer to the con! Weather It does not, in fact, rain ALL the time in Seattle. However, in the springtime, it tends to rain quite a bit. Bring a waterproof jacket if you have one, and maybe an umbrella if you plan to be out and about (though the hotel also has a few umbrellas you can borrow). Temperatures will probably be in the 50s/low 60s, but given climate change shenanigans, we cannot safely predict the weather. Basically, layers are highly recommended—not only is Seattle weather changeable (it snowed at our first BP; WHAAAT), but so are hotel temperatures (especially in meeting spaces, where they tend to crank the air conditioning), so being able to take off/add clothes as necessary is your best bet. Tourist information Downtown Seattle is about a 20-minute drive from Issaquah (up to about 45 minutes with traffic). For information about tourist activities available in the area, you can visit this site. Who's flying this thing? The mod team is intransitive, jedusaur, & pi. General questions/concerns/etc. should go to the ConComm at pacificwriterscon [at] gmail Questions about registration should go to the ConComm at pacificwriterscon [at] gmail as well. As we get closer, we'll update this post with panel, vidshow, and other contact info, but the entire ConComm has access to the above email, and the appropriate person will answer any questions that come up, so that email address is your best bet! We're trying to tag posts as much as possible for ease of navigation. To view all the tags for the community, go here. See you in April!

The Other Progressive Challengers Taking On the Democratic Establishment
By Christopher Hass “Today,” Bernie Sanders booms in his monotone shout, “we begin a political revolution to transform our country—economically, politically, socially and environmentally.” He marks each beat with his right hand, as if conducting with an invisible baton. Behind him, a lone seagull flaps its wings as it flies across Lake Champlain. The crowd of 5,000 that has come to Burlington, Vt., on a sunny afternoon in May to witness Sanders’ official campaign announcement breaks into a cheer. At the time, it was easy to dismiss talk of revolution as the rallying cry of a 74-year-old democratic socialist who clings too dearly to memories of the 1960s. Eleven months and more than six million votes later, Sanders’ call for revolution is harder to ignore. But what, exactly, would this political revolution look like? It’s not hard to imagine Sanders marching in the streets with the masses—he’s walked plenty of picket lines, most recently alongside Verizon workers in New York City last October—but that’s not the revolution he’s calling for. For Sanders, political revolution means shifting control of American politics away from corporate interests, convincing non-voters to go to the polls and attracting white working-class voters back to the Democratic Party, all while moving the party left enough to embrace democratic socialist policies. A political revolution of that kind is going to require two things: a wave of candidates committed to a bold set of progressive ideas and a mass of voters with the political will to elect them. There’s evidence both of these are already here.
Progressives are fired up here for a victory against big money. —Jamie Raskin read the full interview In These Times spoke to U.S. House and Senate challengers across the country who are very much a part of this wave. They are all outsiders to varying degrees, and all of them are running against the Democratic establishment in its various forms—from corporate donors and super PACs to the head of the Democratic National Committee herself. These challengers range from first-time candidates to experienced lawmakers, from community organizers to law professors. Each is balancing the individual concerns of the voters they seek to represent alongside the larger mood of the nation. None of them is running because of Bernie Sanders, but they clearly benefit from the enthusiasm and sense of progressive possibility his campaign has created. It would be a mistake to call them “Sanders Democrats” (and it’s unlikely Sanders himself would want anything to do with the term). Some have endorsed Sanders, others remain neutral or even back Hillary Clinton. But they are coalescing around a set of progressive policies familiar to anyone who has heard Sanders speak, including single-payer healthcare, free college tuition, a $15 minimum wage and breaking up the big banks. It’s hard to imagine a Democratic platform more at odds with Bill Clinton’s centrist Third Way of the 1990s. More importantly, these positions increasingly reflect the popular will. Even after the brutal battles over Obamacare, polls show that more than half of Americans support moving to a single-payer healthcare system. Fifty-eight percent want to break up the big banks. Sixty-three percent support raising the minimum wage to $15. And Americans are nearly united in agreement (78 percent) that Citizens United should be overturned. What’s striking about recent polling, though, is not the support for these progressive policies (many have enjoyed widespread approval for a while), but the openness to new, radical ideas—especially among young voters. In a January YouGov poll, people under 30 rated socialism more favorably than capitalism. On the eve of the Iowa caucus, when asked how they describe themselves, 43 percent of Democratic caucusgoers chose “socialist.” Take a moment to let that sink in. This is what happens when you have a generation of young people whose central experiences with capitalism have been two recessions, a financial crisis, crushing college debt, flat wages and soaring income inequality. For young people, the devil they don’t know is looking better and better than the devil they do—and that sentiment is fueling insurgent challengers. Many of these candidates continually emphasize the need to purge U.S. politics of corporate money, starting with the Democratic Party. “It’s easy for candidates to say they’re for overturning Citizens United, but it’s really meaningless when they’re also taking so much corporate and dark money that they’ll never follow through,” says Tim Canova, who is running for Congress in Florida’s 23rd congressional district. “The Democratic Party has lost its way. It has gone corporate and Wall Street on so many issues that it has unfortunately turned its back on its own grassroots base.” And it’s more than a matter of principle: Many of these candidates believe that voters are fed up with how the corporate capture of the party has pulled it to the right. “The Democratic Party has been Lucy with the football and the voters have been Charlie Brown,” says Tom Fiegen, a candidate for Senate in Iowa. “Democrats have pulled the football away too many times, so the voters say, ‘Nope, I am not going to be tricked again. I am not going to have you lie to me and tell me you’re on my side, and then when I send you to D.C., you vote for the TPP or you vote for the Keystone Pipeline.’ ” Nowhere is this trust gap felt more keenly than among young voters. Sanders has won the support of young people like few politicians before. In each of the 27 states that held primaries or caucuses in February or March, he won the youth vote, often by more than 50 points. In his home state of Vermont, he defeated Hillary Clinton among voters under 29 by an overwhelming 95 percent to 5 percent. Tom Fiegen saw how this played out in Iowa. “In the conventions I went to,” he says, “there was probably 30 to 40 years difference in age between Bernie supporters in one half of the room and Hillary supporters in the other half of the room.” Fiegen himself has endorsed Sanders, and you can hear in his voice the same passion that has animated so many young people: “We are idealists. … We want a better world. We think we can achieve it. We’re willing to basically throw our bodies in front of the bus to do that.”
The number one lesson that everyone can learn from Bernie Sanders, and that I’ve tried to emulate, is: Tell the truth. —Tom Fiegen The challengers:
Tim Canova (FL)
Donna Edwards (MD)
Tom Fiegen (IA)
Lucy Flores (NV)
Alan Grayson (FL)
Eric Kingson (NY)
Pramila Jayapal (WA)
Susannah Randolph (FL)
Joseline Peña-Melnyk (MD)
Jamie Raskin (MD) It would be a mistake to overlook the fact that this year’s election is playing out in a moment when protest movements have interjected themselves into the national conversation in a way we haven’t seen in a long time. Black Lives Matter, Fight for 15, the climate movement and more have demonstrated the value of setting uncompromising demands and pushing the boundaries of what is politically possible. It’s no surprise then that some of these progressive challengers come directly out of protest movements. Pramila Jayapal, a Washington state senator running for the 7th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, has a long history of activism and advocacy in Seattle. She founded the post-9/11 immigrant rights group Hate Free Zone (now OneAmerica), which has held massive voter registration drives. “The only reason I got into politics was because I believed it was another platform for organizing,” she says, “and that’s what I want to do with my congressional campaign. We’ve brought in thousands of leaders, young people and people of color and women who never saw themselves as part of democracy.” Joseline Peña-Melnyk, who is running for Congress in Maryland’s 4th District, says: “These movements give me hope for the future of our democracy. They show that the spirit that gave rise to the civil rights movement is still alive as people take up causes that matter and challenge the status quo.” Donna Edwards, a co-founder of the National Network to End Domestic Violence now running for Maryland’s open Senate seat, agrees. “I’ve always believed in outside movements,” she says. “Government doesn’t move effectively and elected officials don’t move effectively unless they have a big push from the outside.” Candidates like Debbie Medina, a democratic socialist running for state Senate in New York’s 18th District, are happy to be that push. As she told The Nation, “This election is just another rent strike.” Sanders himself is arguably the biggest protest candidate of them all. But a funny thing is happening: Many of the protest candidates are winning. By the middle of April, Sanders had won 16 states, as well as the Democrats abroad primary. Donna Edwards has led by as much as 6 points. Polls show Lucy Flores, a Sanders supporter running for Congress in Nevada, leading by 20 points. In Maryland’s 8th congressional district, Jamie Raskin’s two closest opponents are busy arguing over who’s in second place. For any new president to enact a progressive agenda, they’re going to need a new Congress. The establishment, however, is not going quietly. In Florida, where Tim Canova is challenging Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz for her congressional seat, news got out in March that the Florida Democratic Party (FDP) had denied Canova’s campaign access to the party’s voter file. His supporters created an uproar; the file is crucial to any campaign’s get-out-the-vote efforts. The FDP eventually backed down in order to avoid, in the words of the state party executive director, the “appearance of favoritism,” but the policy remains in place for all other Democratic primary challengers in Florida. And not just Florida—Democratic challengers in other states are routinely denied access to this data or charged extra for it. “The DNC and state Democratic parties must stop favoring incumbents over insurgents in Democratic primaries,” Canova says. “We need to recruit activists committed to our progressive agenda to run for office, and that includes challenging incumbent Democrats.” Given that these candidates want to rid the party of corporate influence, it’s no surprise that many are going head-to-head with big money. In Maryland, Jamie Raskin’s two biggest challengers in the Democratic primary are a wine mogul named David Trone, who has already spent more than $5 million of his fortune on the race, and Kathleen Matthews, who once oversaw the Marriott political action committee and is now herself the recipient of more lobbyist money than any Democrat running for the House in 2016. “My major opponents here have no real history of involvement in Democratic Party politics,” Raskin says. “They are creatures of the big money politics that have overtaken our country.” He’s won the endorsement of both liberal groups and a number of Democratic state lawmakers, and—borrowing a page from Sanders’ playbook—has relied on a surge of small-dollar donations to remain competitive. “Progressives are fired up here for a victory against big money,” Raskin says. In Nevada, Lucy Flores faces a multi-millionaire, Susie Lee, who has loaned her own campaign $150,000. But as Jeb Bush will tell you, money alone only gets you so far, especially in a year when voters seem more interested in authenticity. “The number one lesson that everyone can learn from Bernie Sanders,” Tom Fiegen says, “and that I’ve tried to emulate is: Tell the truth.” Donna Edwards put it this way: “We should not run away from who we are as Democrats and the values that we share. … We lose elections because our voters stay home.” For a President Sanders or a President Clinton to be successful, they’re going to need voters to come out not just in November, but in 2018, 2020, and beyond. For any president to enact a progressive agenda, they’re going to need a new Congress, made up of people like Donna Edwards, Jamie Raskin, Pramila Jayapal and others. When Barack Obama first ran for president, he spoke frequently about how his election was not about him, but us. He may have meant it, but it was hard to shake the feeling that at that moment in American history, it was in fact very much about him and the qualities he possessed. Today, when Sanders uses the same language, you believe him—if for no other reason than it’s hard to imagine a wild-haired septuagenarian in a baggy suit as the catalyst for a popular movement. Clearly, something deeper is going on. For the most part, Sanders himself has remained focused on his own election fight with Hillary Clinton. He has avoided talk of the future. But in a recent interview with Cenk Uygur of the “Young Turks,” Sanders let his guard down for a minute, saying, “We need, win or lose for me, a political revolution which starts electing people who are accountable to the working families of this country.” There it was—“electing people,” plural, not a single president. That’s what revolution looks like. These challengers are also carrying the flag of the political revolution sparked by Bernie Sanders. A San Diego Party Bus Rental Can Be a Great Way for Teens to Celebrate Those Precious Moments in Life
From Prom To Birthdays And So Much More, This Is A Great Way To Help Them Celebrate. With so many special moments in life, it may be difficult for some to realize there are better ways to enjoy them. When it comes to celebrations of those milestones for young teenagers and young adults, a San Diego party bus rental can be a great way to transform prom, birthday celebrations, and even graduation into something tremendous.
Why consider any San Diego bus rental?
Many parents, especially those who may be limited in their budget, may never consider a party bus or any other bus rental service for their child prom, graduation, birthday party, or anything else. That’s because they assume it’s just too much money. After all, anyone who is looked into a party bus, at least a true, genuine party bus, may have heard the price take, which could be more than $1,000 for an evening.
However, spreading the cost around can be a great idea.
Even people up north might be looking for Seattle party bus rentals, for example, begin to understand that spreading the cost around can be a great way to make this more affordable. For example, if just 10 teenagers are traveling together for any particular function and are interested in a party bus, in Seattle, WA, San Diego, or elsewhere, and each of their parents chips and equally, the cost around $100 each.
That’s an incredibly affordable way to celebrate these momentous occasions in life.
Cheap Party Bus DC may sound like it is only a company that provides transportation services for the Greater DC Metro Area, but they are one of largest transportation services in the country, with a presence in many major cities, including San Diego and Seattle. They offer some of the best rates, the best safety, and the best on-time service.
Our 24/7 customer support line is 888.748.4929. Our website, to make reservations and learn more about the services they offer, is www.cheappartybusdc.com.

1. In Kenya, two Christians were recently pulled off a bus and shot dead for failing to recite the Islamic creed:
International Christian Concern reported on the statements of witnesses and heartbroken families a month after the two Christians, Fredrick Ngui Ngonde and Joshua Ooko Obila, were shot dead by Somalia-based terror group al-Shabaab for refusing to recite the Islamic creed.
"The armed Somali fighters ordered all of us to [get off of] the bus and produce our identity cards. They singled out three passengers and ordered them to remain down the bus as we boarded. They asked them if they were Muslims and if they knew the Shahada and the seven verses of Suratul Fatiha. One of them recited part of the Shahada and was allowed to [return] to the bus," a witness who wasn't named told the watchdog group.
"The other two kafir men refused to obey the jihad fighters and remained adamant that Christ is their savior and they cannot deny the Christian faith. They were shot dead."
2. In Nigeria, the death toll for Christians "continues to rise to catastrophic proportions" as radical groups continue their genocidal campaign:
The death toll for Christians in Nigeria continues to rise to catastrophic proportions as the nation seems helpless or unwilling to stop bloodthirsty Islamic radicals targeting Christians in the region.
This time jihadists—identified as notorious Fulani Herdsmen—toting guns and machetes slaughtered 17 innocent victims in one evening, including four young children and a grandmother.
All of the victims are said to be members of a local evangelical Christian church.
3. An American missionary that just moved to Cameroon was viciously gunned down in front of his wife and children:
An American Christian missionary has been shot dead in front of his wife and kids in a volatile region of Cameroon. Charles Wesco, 44, was killed when a volley of gunfire struck his car windshield as he traveled to a local store with his wife, Stephanie, one of his children and a fellow missionary. The ministry worker was rushed to a hospital in the city of Bamenda where he was pronounced dead.
4. In Pakistan, a Christian pharmacist recently died after a gang of Muslims attacked him with acid:
According to Asia News, Faraz Ahmed Badar was a 26-year-old pharmacist who worked at the DHQ Hospital in Gujaranwala. Before his death, he had been harassed relentlessly by a Muslim colleague, who was reportedly jealous that Badar was in a more senior position than him at work. The understanding was this—if you are a Christian, you should never be allowed to rise above a Muslim at work. And it was this prejudice that resulted in Badar's untimely death.
On Sept. 5, the pharmacist was preparing for his shift when he was brutally attacked with acid by a group of men who were wearing face masks. The suspects are still at large. Badar was rushed to a local hospital, where he spent 10 days before succumbing to his injuries and dying on Sept. 15.
5. In Myanmar, rebel attacks have "destroyed or closed" 12 churches, and some pastors have even had their heads shaved:
A group of rebels has set its sights on Burmese Christians in a fresh series of attacks, with devastating results. Over the past couple of weeks, Ethnic Wa rebels have shut down churches, destroyed religious buildings and even shaved the heads of local pastors.
Authorities Claim Christians Are 'Enemies of the Regime'; Attack, Detain and Kill Anyone Who Stands in the Way
17 Sentenced to Death in Church Bombings
The communist United Wa State Army (UWSA), Myanma's largest ethnic rebel force, launched the assaults in Shan state, according to Morning Star News.
"We confirmed that at least 12 churches have been destroyed or closed as of Sept. 20," said one church leader of the latest spree of attacks.
6. In India, the police recently stormed a church service on a Sunday morning and arrested 10 pastors as they were praying because "they had been converting non-members":
The 10 pastors were detained with their loved ones as they prayed at a church on Sunday in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, following allegations made by Hindu nationalist groups that they had been converting non-members.
Pastor Bahavan Ram was arrested after police burst into his church in Kariyabar in what has been described as a major crackdown on Christianity in the state.
7. The persecution of Christians in China is the worst that it has ever been in modern times. According to a British news source, "hundreds of churches" have now been demolished by government officials:
China has imposed a massive crackdown on Christianity across the country, with hundreds of churches demolished and Bibles banned.
Beijing's President Xi Jinping has previously labelled Christianity as "Western infiltration," insisting [that] Western ideologies ... [pose] a threat to the country's Communist authority.
In April, China's religious affairs department published an article stating all churches in country must follow the Communist Party's rules so that they are "Sinicized" (made more Chinese).
8. American Christians generally have it much easier than the rest of the world, but incidents of violence are becoming more frequent here as well. For example, a church in Seattle was recently firebombed with Molotov cocktails:
As a group of about 50 congregants attended a worship service at a Seattle-based church, an arsonist hurled several Molotov cocktails toward the sanctuary.
Witnesses told authorities they saw a person throwing lit bottles filled with an unknown substance at Iglesia ni Cristo just after 8 p.m. Thursday and immediately called 9-1-1, according to KCPQ-TV.

3515 S Alaska St, Seattle, WA 98118-1633
Experiencing hate is nothing new for us as LGBTQ+ people, particularly those of us LGBTQ folks that are also people of color. While national and local numbers of hate violence incidents’ are rising, we have known this hate to be true long before the numbers began to catch up. One of the most powerful ways we continue to resist hate and survive throughout the violence is by coming together; growing and sustaining deep, celebratory, and liberated communities rooted in love. Existing in community can be difficult though if we forget to tend to ourselves as well. Join the Northwest Network to learn and practice self-healing techniques. We hope for these techniques to serve as groundwork to engage and be fully present in communities, relationships, and families, of liberated love.
* More information about workshops and facilitators will be posted soon! Thank you for your patience.

How long is a party bus limo?
In some circumstances, a party limo bus service with a pick-up and drop-off point would be useful. If you’d like to make your party planning easier, consider arranging for a private limo to the venue. In the US, there are many cost-effective options for doing this.
You could book a limo service for a single ride to the venue. Or, you could book the limo service for the whole night.
When planning a wedding, there are many reasons to consider hiring a limousine service for the wedding night. If you’re considering a limo service for the wedding night, it’s a good idea to look at the following.
A wedding night is one of the most important days of a bride and groom’s life. This is a day when you will be surrounded by your loved ones. It’s a day to celebrate the commitment you’ve made to one another.

4 Simply Beautiful Additions to A Romantic Wedding
Creating a wedding as interesting and romantic as a Seattle Party Bus can be a fun place to start when it comes to wedding planning. We’ve found ideas that you can implement to make your wedding one-of-a-kind!
Promote birds to be a large portion of your guest list. Birds have beautiful songs to sing, and they’re sure to compliment any wedding just like a San Diego Party Bus Rental would. Black sunflower seeds attract merrily singing songbirds such as Cardinals and Wrens, as well as Chickadees, Titmouse birds, Finches, and Buntings.
Hang windchime wherever you can. Most people agree that there is something about the flowing sound of wind caressing wind chimes that instantly creates a Zen-like atmosphere.
This will make your wedding as extravagant as a Party Bus Seattle WA loves! Did you know that you can order butterflies online? You can order larvae, which is very easy to take care of, then on the day of your wedding, release them around the venue. If you don’t have time, you can always call upon an insect handler to bring butterflies to your wedding. Let them go as the newlyweds kiss, or you can keep them around by selecting a venue with gardens.
Grab a San Diego Bus Rental for your wedding guests and as your friends and family are transported to the venue, have a tour guide that not only talks about the city on the way, but also the couple. You can give the tour guide, or hired performer a timeline, fun facts, and more about the soon to be newlyweds.
Choose a venue with natural architectural beauty or one that is seated next to the ocean or a lake. Call Now at (888) 748-4929

Nintendo Switch Lounges Will Soon Be Coming to a US Airport Near You
February 11, 2020 4:20 PM EST
Save the battery life on your own Nintendo Switch during a cross-country commute with these airport-based lounges.
The Nintendo Switch has become a commuter’s best friend. You won’t be able to get on a bus, a train or a plane without seeing at least one. They’re a frequent feature in queues, especially at conventions, and with good reason. The portable-home hybrid has a mammoth collection of incredible titles, including some which we never expected to see on-the-go.
Noticing this trend, Nintendo have decided to do what they do best; think outside of the box. No one could claim that Nintendo doesn’t innovate. They’re not chasing 4K ray-tracing like their competitors, not when they can get you to strap cardboard to your face. Announced today on Twitter by the official Nintendo of America account, the company will be bringing themed lounges to select airports across the US.
Branded as Nintendo Switch
On The Go, the pop-up lounges will allow hands-on time with Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite consoles. A perfect way to snag a captive audience, especially those trapped by a delayed flight, Nintendo’s marketing team could certainly influence more consumer purchases this way.
The lounges will be a limited-time event, coming to these major airports during the following dates:
Feb. 13 – March 26
Dallas Love Field Airport – Dallas, TX, West Terminal, near Gates 14 and 16
Feb. 17 – March 29
Dulles International Airport – Washington, D.C., Concourse B near west entrance/exit, next to Gate B62
Seattle – Tacoma International Airport – Seattle, WA, Concourse C, next to Gate C10
O’Hare International Airport – Chicago, IL, Terminal 1, Concourse B, between Gates B12 and B14
In a blog post on Nintendo’s website, the company confirms the lounges will feature comfortable seating and charge ports for personal devices. Playable systems will have demos from games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Super, and Mario Party which will be available in both handheld or TV mode. How Nintendo is going to stop people walking away with the consoles is yet to be seen. I’m picturing bouncers in Wario costumes.
Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, said:
“With a vast library of exciting entertainment to launch into, we hope travelers discover that Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite make great companions for their trips. Spending time with Nintendo games at our On The Go lounges will give people the opportunity to begin or end their journeys with a smile.”
Travelers will be able to order consoles, games, and merchandise via the Nintendo Lounges as well as in-person bonuses.
Will you be popping into one of the lounges to chill out after a stressful TSA security experience? What else would you like to see Nintendo bring to the physical locations? Let us know in the comments below.
Nintendo Switch
On The Go launches on February 13, 2020.
