Get together Bus Driver Jobs, Employment
The cost of constitution bus and event transportation is not one-value-matches-all. Ask Party Bus Toronto reserving agent about a discounted or free room on your bus driver if you guide a group reservation. Just remember to completely perceive the pay table when renting a party bus. Always do not forget that rates may change depending on where you intend to go in Perth, the time you'll use the bus and so on. Although gratuity is often not included in quotes, a tip is always appreciated. Thank your driver for a job well performed with a advisable tip of 10-20% your whole rental price. Convey cash in a separate envelope to provide to your driver at the finish of your trip. Not every limousine is a stretch and not every limousine is a sedan. Although a stretch SUV might not replicate the specified elegance for a wedding, it could be simply the trip for a bachelorette celebration. Do this website for getting more info related to SF Limousine Rental. Select from our Escalade Limo, Chrysler 300 limos, Rolls Royce Limousine, Cadillac Limo, and our Lincoln Stretch Limos. It doesn't matter what occasion you have got Birmingham Limo Company can get you to your destination on time. Whether or not it be for Celebration, wedding, prom, anniversary, homecoming, funeral, or bar mitzvah. Social gathering buses often make headlines, principally damaging. In 2012, a brawl erupted between Surrey high school grads and a motorist who crossed their path behind a Husky gas station in Cloverdale. The charter bus had been carrying about 50 young folks during an after-grad celebration and made a pit stop at the station. Subsequently a mini-van's windows had been smashed, a cloud of bear spray was loosed, rocks have been thrown and roughly a dozen cop cars have been known as to the scene, in addition to 5 ambulances and two fireplace vehicles.

Plan for Your Wedding Way Before the Actual Date
Tumblr media
Nothing can spoil the wedding spirit and fun like the last minute hassle of making the necessary arrangements. You might tend to work better under pressure but take our advice and don’t risk leaving such things till late. Plan for your wedding way ahead of time and make sure you have everything ready beforehand, especially the party bus rental in San Francisco to take you to the wedding venue.
9-12 Months before the Wedding Date
Tumblr media
Plan your budget and make a list of things you want about 9-12 months before the wedding. This will save you from the last minute shopping sprees. Make a Pinterest or bucket list if you want and also keep an eye out for the vendors and service providers you want to hire later.
6-9 Months before the Wedding Date
Tumblr media
Start shopping. Make sure you keep your significant other as well as the bridesmaids of groomsmen involved to. If you are planning to dress in sync, this phase will need time and some ideas. Decide the venue and menu and order the wedding cake too.
4-6 Months before the Wedding Date
Tumblr media
Finalize the deals and details with the vendors and start working on the rehearsals. You will also need to keep a check on the small requirements, such as props, during this time too. Start working on the make-up and hairstyle trials too and most importantly, book your SF party bus rental

Moving to California: One Month Update
Growing up, I never considered that I would one day live in California. To me, California was Hollywood, hard drugs, pool parties, tech, wineries, and weed farms. My perception has been based completely on what I have seen on Weeds, Californication, The O.C., and more recently Silicon Valley. So far, California seems to be all these things, and more. Here I share my first impressions based on one month living in California.
We landed in the small-ish city of San Mateo, so I have yet to experience the hard drugs and pool parties. S and I can walk to all essential places (i.e. coffee, groceries, and S’s office) from our flat. For everything else and venturing outside city limits, there is Uber or the occasional weekend rental. I suspect we will encounter the dirty needles and human feces littering the streets of SF when we finally make it to the city this weekend.
What I have noticed the most about where we live is that I am not the majority. There are students from abroad, immigrant professionals, and first generation Americans still closely connected to their roots, but not many white girls, especially from the Midwest. One exception, is my new gynecologist. She’s a proud UW-Madison alumna from a small town in Iowa. There is also Morgan who works at the car rental place, but I actually have no idea where she is from. But I notice more when someone is similar to me in this way because it feels rare. To give more context, S asked if I plan to wear a saree the next time we go to Ikea.
The cost of living is high enough to make almost anyone cringe. We knew this coming in. I used to think people were mad when they commented online that HelloFresh, Plated, GreenChef, etc. were saving them money compared to ordering-in. Now I know where those people live. Rental prices for apartments in our area have increased by $500 per month since we moved into our flat just a couple weeks ago. We will think of the obnoxious boiler room noise below us as white noise because we cannot afford to go anywhere anytime soon.
What amazes me is that there are normal people here, working normal jobs. I have absolutely no idea how anyone affords to be here long term. People with regular jobs in retail, service, banking, etc. must have lengthy commutes and extremely tight budgets. It isn’t even a dichotomy because the average worker in the tech industry isn’t living large. I know from experience that the Goodwill stores are picked through and items in the “free” section on Craigslist go fast.
We won’t be parents or homebuyers anytime soon, so what I am most excited about is spending time outdoors. We took a drive on Highway One and saw the Pacific for the first time. It’s sunny here and we’re going to enjoy the moderate weather. S is excited and energized by his job, but he still makes it home by 5:30 most days. We aren't very social people, but he is ready for our quiet fun on weekends. I wish this kind of passion and balance with work for everyone, including myself.
On Monday, the ER doctor reminded us that we are still very much newly weds. (S sliced his hand open in the kitchen.) My point is that as we are figuring out a new city/state/country, we are also navigating how to be married. I didn’t notice much difference in our relationship after our court marriage. However, something about moving across the world and trying to plan weddings remotely makes the waters a little rougher. It is not smooth sailing, people!
What I miss the most no matter where I am is the people. I went out to breakfast with my mom and sister the other day via Facetime. (The waitress kept glaring at me, so I didn't tip her for my coffee.) I chat with my cousin on WhatsApp while she is on a bus in Southern Mexico, I video call on Signal with my in-laws, and I keep in touch with my closest gal pals on Hangouts. It would be better to spend time in person, but you can't be with everyone you love all the time. We will be positive about having people in so many places because it means more cities we must visit.
I know from experience that it will take time to build a life here. I’ve started by applying for communications and EA roles for the obvious financial benefits but also to facilitate making friends. It will take networking and effort to land the right role. We will figure out the best restaurants to order from and the best dishes in our city. (There is a 4.5 star Indian restaurant with 900 reviews on Yelp, but the chicken tikka masala is too sweet for S. It’s obviously no Khaaja Chowk.) We will eventually agree on and purchase a car to stop paying $15 to go three miles via Uber. And, our wedding will be fun no matter what we spend because life is what you make it. So, we’re minutes from Silicon Valley and all their apps and websites are only solving some of our issues. We're having fun and making it work anyways.

Is It Worth Having A High Deductible Health Plan To Be Eligible For A Health Savings Account?
Tumblr media
Everywhere I go, I hear the benefits of the Health Savings Account, or HSA for short. People say it’s one of the best ways to save for retirement and pay for inevitable medical expenses given the tax benefits.
Not wanting to miss out on an obvious financial benefit, I did what most lazy husbands do and asked my wife about it. She is, after all, the CFO and COO of our online business. As such, she is also in charge of our healthcare plan.
She told me we aren’t eligible for Health Savings Accounts because we don’t have a High Deductible Health Plan. Hmrph. Well that doesn’t seem right. Based on what I heard, everybody is eligible, otherwise, that would be discrimination!
But then I realized the government consistently discriminates against some of us all the time. For example, if you make over a certain income threshold, you cannot contribute to a traditional IRA or Roth IRA. What’s up with that? We should all be allowed to save for our financial future.
In the past, if you made over $75,000 as a single filer or $110,000 as a joint filer, you couldn’t receive a child tax credit. Children are already expensive and stressful enough. Why was the government incentivizing lower-income households to have more children and disincentivizing higher income households to have fewer children?
Maybe they were looking to increase the divorce rate due to powerful lobbyists in the legal community.
Luckily, the child tax credit income threshold is now a more reasonable and logical $200,000 for single filers and $400,000 for joint filers. Why the government thought 1+1=1.5 in the past made no sense. Same thing with the marriage penalty tax that has since been abolished with the passage of the Tax Cut And Jobs Act.
Slowly, we are heading towards equal treatment of all American citizens. But not yet when it comes to healthcare.
Things To Know About The HSA Plan
People who say the Health Savings Plan is the best thing ever and is available to everyone really need to stop being so insensitive. There are real people out there who do not qualify, whether by choice or by circumstance.
In order to qualify for an HSA, you must be covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). An HDHP generally costs less than what traditional healthcare coverage costs, so the money that you save on insurance, can therefore, be put into the Health Savings Account.
To qualify to contribute to an HSA in 2019, you must have a health insurance policy with a deductible of at least $1,350 for single coverage or $2,700 for family coverage. Some feel uncomfortable paying such a high deductible each year.
If you happen to have a rockstar Gold or Platinum healthcare plan with a lower deductible or no deductible, you are not eligible.
If you are eligible you can contribute up to $3,500 pre-tax to an HSA if you have single coverage or up to $7,000 pre-tax for family coverage in 2019. If you’re 55 or older anytime in 2019, you’ll continue to be able to contribute an extra $1,000.
HSA funds can pay for any “qualified medical expense,” even if the expense is not covered by your HDHP. If the money from the HSA is used for qualified medical expenses, including dental and vision, then the money spent is tax-free.
If the money is used for other than qualified medical expenses, the expenditure will be taxed and, for individuals who are not disabled or over age 65, subject to a 10% tax penalty.
The unused balance in a Health Savings Account automatically rolls over year after year. You won’t lose your money if you don’t spend it within the year. Further, the money in your HSA can be invested and earn compound gains tax-free.
When Is It Worth Getting A High Deductible Health Plan?
Healthcare might be the biggest ripoff in America. Most people get little-to-no medical usage while still having to pay on average $20,000 a year in healthcare premiums.
The reason why there isn’t a bigger uproar is because most of an employee’s healthcare costs are subsidized by the employer. The same goes for paying higher taxes.
Once you become a business owner, you feel the pain of paying all the various taxes much more acutely. Therefore, you tend to stop voting incessantly to raise more taxes to pay for more wasteful government spending.
Tumblr media
The only reasons I can think of for people to get a High Deductible Health Plan are:
You rarely get sick or injured. Folks in their 20s and 30s may be prime targets.
You can afford to pay your deductible without having to go into debt.
You’re willing to pay your deductible to get medical treatment.
You have enough money to fund an HSA each month.
You don’t have little ones or sick dependents.
You want another financial way to support your retirement.
The Out Of Pocket Maximum is affordable.
The conundrum is, if you are getting an HDHP because you can’t comfortably afford higher monthly premiums, how is it then possible for you to make significant contributions to an HSA each month?
Such logic seems contradictory.
Tumblr media
Who Should Get A Low Or No-Deductible Health Plan
In general, low-deductible or no-deductible plans have higher premiums. Despite the higher premiums, however, it makes healthcare expenses easier to estimate.
A low- or no-deductible plan might be right for you if:
You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or have small children.
You have a chronic condition or need to see a doctor frequently.
You’re considering or anticipating a big surgery.
You take several expensive prescription medications.
You or your children like to partake in high-risk activities such as mountain climbing, scuba diving, sky diving, skiing/snowboarding, and the like.
You’re not a good budgeter and like more certainty.
You put a premium on peace of mind and want to minimize the stress of dealing with health insurance providers who may refuse payments.
Before our son was born we decided to get a no-deductible platinum healthcare plan. The cost of giving birth sometimes runs in the tens of thousands of dollars. Further, we were unsure about our baby’s health. You really don’t know how healthy your little one will be until s/he is around 10 years old or so.
With a no-deductible healthcare plan, we made our healthcare costs predictable so we could focus our time being first-time parents. Focus is one of the main reasons why we sold our SF rental house right after he was born as well.
Health Insurance Horror Stories
Some insurance companies always seem to find a way not to pay out a claim, despite years of receiving premiums. I’ve heard so many stories about patients getting screwed by the insurance company or their health provider because of a low-quality health plan or some type of mix up.
Here are some headlines from Vox, which has done a great job uncovering individual health insurance horror stories here in SF.
A $20,243 Bike Crash: Zuckerberg Hospital’s Aggressive Tactics Leave Patients With Big Bills
Hit by a city bus — and hit with a $27,660 city hospital bill
She tried to go to an in-network emergency room. She ended up with a $28,254 bill anyway.
As new parents, we don’t have time to deal with this BS, nor did we want to risk the potential extra stress of dealing with difficult insurance providers or health providers.
I have friends who are doctors and they tell me straight up the worst part about their job is dealing with insurance companies followed by increasing bureaucracy.
A couple of doctors have admitted to me that if their patient has a “more difficult” health insurance plan, they are more reluctant to return calls or e-mails or fit them into their schedules.
Doctors, too, are economically motivated, particularly given the amount of time and money required to become a doctor. If they can join a healthcare network whose patients have higher quality health plans, they will.
It’s not hard to believe more money attracts better doctors.
And yes, one would hope that just because one has a high deductible doesn’t mean once the deductible is reached, the quality of care is any less. But some people just aren’t willing to take that chance.

Income Threshold Consideration For A Health Plan
In terms of deciding what type of healthcare plan to get based on income, an easy rule of thumb is to go with the high deductible health plan if you earn less than $100,000 a year and are relatively healthy.
Once you earn over $100,000 per person in your household, you might as well pay up for the highest quality health plan possible. Again, having young children is a big X factor in terms of how much healthcare your family will need.
You may initially feel like you’re missing out on the HSA party, but you won’t feel bad for long because your income is high enough to where you can comfortably max out your 401(k) and still save additional after-tax money for retirement.
Further, you might receive more healthcare benefits that could save you money in the future. You will be logically more inclined to proactively seek medical treatment since your costs are more fixed.
The next time you hear someone say an HSA is the best retirement savings vehicle on Earth, you now know what they’re sacrificing. There is no free lunch.
The good thing about a HDHP or a low or no-deductible health plan is that so long as we have one, we are insured from disaster. Make sure you know what your maximum out of pocket expense is for each plan. Once you’ve run some calculations with various scenarios, choose the plan that’s right for you.

Tumblr media
You’re healthy and rarely get sick or injured. Folks in their 20s and 30s may be prime targets.
You can afford to pay your deductible without having to go into debt.
You have enough money to fund an HSA each month.
You don’t have little ones or sick dependents.
You want another financial way to support your retirement.

How to Make a San Francisco Party Bus Rental the Talk of the Wedding
How to Make a San Francisco Party Bus Rental the Talk of the Wedding
Most people, when they think about weddings, envision the bride and groom as the center of focus. They should be. However, even though family and friends will be talking about how beautiful the bride looked, how handsome the groom was, how their vows were wonderful, and the experience was great from start to finish, there is a way to make it even more memorable that comes in the form of a Party…

What Sights Are Worth Seeing in a Bus Rental in San Francisco?
Tumblr media
You’re looking into a bus rental in San Francisco for your wedding. You’re planning to surprise your family and friends with this little gift. You want them to enjoy a tour of the city.
You’re looking for the best San Francisco tour bus you can find.
You know there are plenty of companies out there, but not all of them have late-model buses. Not all of them have highly experienced or safe drivers. So, you are being diligent in your search.
You’re not going for the party bus in SF.
You thought about it, especially for your spouse and bridesmaids and best men, but you want everyone to stay together. That’s why you’re looking at a couple of coach buses for this tour.
Some of the best places to visit with a San Francisco charter bus include the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and Fisherman’s Wharf.
Are there other places worth seeing?
Of course, with a quality charter bus in San Francisco, CA, you can visit just about anywhere you want. When you hire a reliable, dependable, experienced company, their drivers will likely have an incredible amount of inside information, knowledge, and insight into the area’s history and best places to visit. Some of your guests may want to visit a couple of art galleries or a shopping mall. Some might be more content just enjoying the city from the windows of the bus.
Just make sure there are some photo opportunities.
Plan ahead and if you need to make changes, if you chose a quality company that offers 24/7 customer support, changes should not be a problem.

On Prom, a Party Bus Rental in the Bay Area Offers Teenagers Freedom and Safety
Tumblr media
Teenagers, as they get older, are often fighting with their parents for independence. Few teenagers actually think about safety, and when it comes to prom night, a party bus rental Bay Area would be an ideal choice for not just offering that level of freedom, but also safety.
The right company matters.
Tumblr media
Choosing the right company is going to make a big difference when it comes to prom night. Parents may be looking at the cost of transportation services, but a limo service in the Bay Area doesn’t have to break the bank.
Affordability should be important to the company.
Tumblr media
Safety should always be the top priority of any transportation company a person considers, but affordability should also be an issue. Some transportation companies charge an arm and a leg for the services and that might not be practical for parents on prom night.
Especially when you consider a party bus in the Bay Area.
Tumblr media
A true, genuine party bus can be one of the most expensive transportation service options out there. However, if parents are considering party buses SF, if they are able to speak to other parents whose teenagers will be traveling together, they spread the cost around and suddenly that party bus is a far more affordable option to consider.
Those teenagers will be able to enjoy prom, travel where they want to go, and even enjoy those after prom parties while the parents relax, knowing their teenagers are safe and in good hands. That offers freedom and safety for teenagers and peace of mind for parents.

What Does Early Retirement Feel Like? The Positives And Negatives Of Not Working For A Living
Financial independence and retirement are used interchangeably, but there are some subtle differences. Financial independence is usually applicable to people across their entire lifespan. Those who cashed out $5 million dollars worth of Facebook stock at the age of 30 are financially independent just like those who saved $5 million in their retirement funds by the age of 65.
Retirement, on the other hand, is a term often used to describe someone in the last quarter of their lives e.g. ages 65 and up. This is why some folks get so hot and bothered if you aren’t in the upper ages but say you are retired. They don’t think you deserve retirement because you’re not old enough! If you don’t want unwanted attention as an early retiree, just say you are unemployed, on sabbatical, or an entrepreneur.
The reality is all of us would rather be financially independent earlier, so we have more time to enjoy our wealth. When the director of admissions at UC Berkeley asked why I was applying so early (25), I told her it was because I knew what I wanted to do and felt it best to leverage an MBA degree sooner, for a longer period of time. Little did I know I’d be done 10 years later.
Although I’m no longer considered an early retiree due to the endless hours it takes being a full-time dad and maintaining this website, I did have at least one year of early retirement life after 2012 where I was completely carefree. For those curious about what early retirement feels like, I’m going to highlight all the positives and negatives I can think of since leaving the workforce in 2012.
The Positives Of Early Retirement
* No longer having to commute in traffic feels like heaven. It’s funny that not riding the bus was the first positive that came to mind as opposed to workplace politics, stress, or more common answers. I used to leave the house around 7:20am every morning to catch the 7:23am bus around the corner. Despite my punctuality, the bus would either not arrive on time or be so full of people I’d have to walk another 5 blocks just to get on. Now when I see folks crammed in buses I can’t help but smile.
* Running errands is easy. I do all my errands around 10:45am or 2:30pm, because that is when most people are still at work. There’s no traffic or lines at the store during these hours and I’m much more efficient in getting things done. I continue to wonder why everybody wants to come to work at 8am and leave at 5pm. It took me 1.5 hours to drive 20 miles to pick up my parents at Oakland Airport due to traffic the other month. It only takes 35 minutes during off peak hours. Come into work earlier and leave a little earlier. Your stress level will go way down.
* Lots of free entertainment. There is an incredible amount of free entertainment during the week. Part of it is because organizations want to show their community support and free access on weekdays provides the lowest amount of damage to their bottom lines. Museums that cost $15-$20 to enter are usually free at least once a month. There are also free cooking classes by Williams Sonoma, free interior design parties by AirBnb, free rock climbing lessons by REI, and so on. There are always free music festivals at various public parks as well here in SF.
* You learn to become more self-sufficient. When I was busy working, I didn’t have time to figure out how to fix the leaky toilet. I would call the plumber and pay him $150-$250 at a time. Nowadays, I simply search on YouTube for a home maintenance tutorial and voila! Call me handyman Sam. If I can’t fix something I’ll chat up the local hardware store attendee and see if he can tell me what’s wrong. Having a smartphone to videotape the issues helps tremendously. Learning how to do things myself has also saved me a lot of time and money on rental property maintenance.
* Better nightlife. Because I used to start work by 7:30am every morning for the past 10 years, I was tired by 10pm. I just wanted to stay in and watch some TV after work. Now I’m always down to go out for dinner or drinks with friends during the weekdays. I’ve attended multiple events that last until 11pm and am ecstatic to not have to go to work the next day.
* Better friendships. I spend more time cultivating my offline relationships now that I don’t work. Those thin relationships one has on Facebook become stronger as you actually send them personal messages to see what’s up and hang out. The more you go out, the more friends you’ll meet. This is especially helpful for single folks. Social integration is vital for happiness.
* Better family relationships. I spend much more time speaking to and visiting my family now that I have more time. Spending more time with family is probably the most rewarding part about retirement. The younger you are, the more you appreciate it because you likely have more family still around. While I was working, literally months would go by where I didn’t interact with my parents because I was too busy.
* More comprehensive posts. Good posts can take a long time to write. But with so much more time now, I can afford to write meatier content that can help more folks. Meatier content also tends to do better in the search engines, bringing in more traffic, and more revenue. In the past, I’d write 750 word posts. Now I’m able to spend more time researching to produce posts that are double in length on average.
* More purpose in life. Most people I know don’t believe their purpose in life is to do whatever they do at their jobs. Plenty of folks start getting depressed when they talk about spending all their time at a job that doesn’t really make a positive impact. They see a job as a stepping stone for something greater and can’t wait to get out. Once you no longer have to work for a living, you hone in on exactly what you want to do that provides meaning.
* In better shape. Without having to sit in a chair for hours at a time, you’ll naturally burn more calories being more active. At 5’10”, I used to struggle maintaining a weight of ~165 lbs, now it requires less effort because I now play tennis, bike, walk, or hike at least three times a week compared to just once or twice a week while working. Being in better shape feels great. It might even extend your life, who knows!
* You can always keep busy. One of the biggest fears working people have before retirement is figuring out what they are going to do with all their free time. I worried how I was going to go from working 70 hours a week to just writing for 20 hours a week and playing sports in the afternoon. If you have a hobby you are passionate about, you don’t have to worry about not being able to fill the void in retirement. There is an endless amount of things to do.
* No fear of getting fired. No employee is ever safe in this hyper competitive world. You could be a star performer, but if your new boss hates you for whatever reason, you’re done. I used to worry about whether I’d be called into the HR’s office due to a recession, underperformance, complaint, error on my expense report, etc. Now there is no worry.
* A more positive disposition. Do you know that smile you get after carving down a black diamond or riding a jet ski over some waves? You will catch yourself smiling without even knowing because people will randomly smile back at you because you’re smiling at them. Smiling when you don’t even know it is probably the #1 outward signal for true happiness.
* The ability to be present with your kids. Our baby boy is the most precious thing in the world and has crystalized the value of early retirement. Before our son was born, it was nice to travel, sleep in, play sports, and write. But now, I’m excited each morning to give my son a hug and play with him for hours. Every day we thank our lucky stars that we get to spend the critical first five years of his life raising him before kindergarten. They grow up so fast!
The Negatives Of Early Retirement
* Become more impatient with delays and waste. Traffic and long lunch lines used to annoy me, but now they really annoy me because I hardly ever experience them anymore. I get annoyed with myself for going anywhere during peak rush hour. I really try not to meet anybody if I have to commute during the hours of 7am-10am and 4pm-7pm. I have to remind myself when it’s bumper to bumper thank goodness I no longer have to deal with such jams on a regular basis.
* Gets lonely sometimes. While your friends and acquaintances are busy working, you’re sometimes busy doing nothing. If you don’t have a partner or family, then you might end up having breakfast, lunch, and dinner alone. I’ve built a small network of work-from-home, unemployed, or work at night friends to play tennis and hang out with. I’m trying to meet more people through a softball meetup that I’ve joined, but I haven’t met anybody I’d like to hang out with so far. It’s easy to feel disconnected if you’re always working from home.
* Easy to get lazy. Before my son was born, I found myself taking hour long naps after lunch, watching too much sports on TV, and chilling in the hot tub for hours. It takes a lot more discipline once you’ve retired to push yourself to do something meaningful because nobody is telling you what to do.
* Potentially less money. This one is obvious, but maybe not. You only voluntarily retire and stay retired if you have enough money to support your desired lifestyle. It’s a different situation if you are forced into retirement. It did sting a little bit to no longer have a healthy W2 income the first six months. However, just like how we adapt quickly to a nice bonus or raise, we also adapt quickly to a loss of income. The fear of running out of money in retirement is overblown.
* Vacations aren’t as exciting anymore. I used to love taking five to six weeks of vacation every year. If my old job could grant 10 weeks of vacation a year, I would have stayed on for at least another five years. Now that we can go on vacation 365 days a year, it’s just not that exciting anymore. We did travel for 6-8 weeks between 2012 – 2016, but by the end of 2016 we were completely traveled out. All the churches in Europe started looking the same.
Other Observations After Retirement
* Spend less time on social media. I spend probably 50% less time on Twitter than when I was working. Perhaps it’s because Twitter was a great way to pass the time during commutes or in between meetings. I also continue to spend very little time on Facebook except for my tennis team group page.
* Know a lot of unemployed people. No matter what time during the day I go out between Monday and Friday, there are tons of people out on the street or hanging out at the tennis courts. When you’re working, you think everybody is holed up in an office building and only comes out during lunch or when the clock strikes 5pm. In reality, plenty of people are unemployed or have flexible work schedules.
* Discover so many different ways to live. When I was working I just figured most people just had a normal 8am – 5pm day job. But during my time away from work I’ve met dog walkers, nannies, professional athletes, teachers during summer vacations, government employees who retired early with great pensions, bartenders, strippers, bouncers, tennis teachers, coffee shop owners, small business owners, and plenty of online entrepreneurs who enjoy a lot of freedom during the day. Related: Abolish Welfare Mentality: A Janitor Makes $271,000 A Year
* No desire to play golf. The cliché is that once guys retire we end up playing golf all day. I thought I would love to play at least once a week with all my free time, but instead, I found the game to be absolutely boring when I had to play it alone or with strangers. Further, the game takes way too long.
* Feel inspired by older workers. Every time I go grocery shopping, I bump into cashiers and baggers who are over 60 years old. They probably only make around $13 an hour. Their hard work inspires me to not take things for granted and keep this site going. Everybody starts off with different opportunities in life. We’ve got to make the most of what we’ve got.
* Just want to feel useful. If I don’t feel useful to someone, I feel like a loser. Hence, I try and stay busy writing online, volunteering as a foster kid mentor, doing work around the house, and coaching high school tennis while I’m not taking care of my baby boy. Retirement takes away that good feeling of having someone depending on you for guidance.
* Constantly wonder what else is there in life. When I was busy working, I didn’t have much time left to think about philosophy. With so much more free time I sometimes think, is this all there is to life? Starting Financial Samurai has given me a strong sense of purpose. I recommend all retirees start their own site as well to find their tribe online.
* It gets harder to stay retired over time. The first six months of retirement were full of excitement, fear, and joy. As time went on, I adapted to my newfound freedom by creating a routine that best suited my desires. Once I mastered my routine life got incredibly easy. When life gets easy, life also begins to get boring. With such a strong economy since 2012, I couldn’t help be do some consulting with several fintech companies and see if I could build Financial Samurai into something larger. See: Staying Retired Is Impossible Once You Retire Early
* You need much less money than you think to be happy. My biggest surprise since leaving my day job is realizing how much less I need to be happy by about 30% – 50%. One of the reasons is that once you’re retired, you no longer have to save for retirement. It feels foreign to spend 100% of your retirement income or passive income, but that’s what you get to do if you truly have enough. Further, you are so much happier in retirement that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to make you happy.
Early Retirement Is So Worth It
There are studies that show death comes quicker after retirement due to a lack of purpose. With the internet and so much good we can do once we have our free time back, I can’t see how anybody would ever feel permanently lost in retirement. Try volunteering at a charity or mentoring a child if you start feeling aimless. Everybody could use a helping hand.
Retiring early is a blessing because our bodies still allow us to climb the steepest Mayan steps and start the most daunting businesses when we still have the energy. Hopefully this post gives you some inspiration to get up a little earlier, save more money, and take calculated risks to retire early as well. The feeling of being able to do whatever you want is priceless.
