I first became aware of the phenomenon of sexual moaning in our institutions of learning when visiting a large public school in regional Queensland early in 2021. I asked the girls what messages they would like conveyed to their male peers.

‘Please ask the boys to stop making sexual moaning noises in class.’ This was new to me. ‘How many of you have heard boys make these noises?’ I asked. In unison, 300 girls raised their hands.

It wasn’t just in the classroom either, they told me. It was on the school bus. At weekend sport. At a party. In the line-up at Maccas. While walking down the street. Even at home, where an older brother had trained the younger in the art of sexual groaning. But this community was not an outlier.

From then on, I asked every female student in every school I was able to enter in the COVID-disrupted year that followed if they had been similarly confronted. ‘Yes, of course we hear these noises.’ ‘It’s normal.’ ‘We thought we just had to put up with it.’ They think this practice of boys simulating the noise of orgasm at any female in their midst is normal. Not unusual, not rare, not out of the ordinary, but normal.

An hour and 30 minutes had passed, and mostly you had done the asking. You were talkative like that, and Nick is polite. Always answering your question and never seemed irritated. It went from why he took this job, and how to know and avoid rotten produce.

Turns out he had applied for college at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, he had been only in America for a few months and tried to take the part-time job for experience. He was born and raised in Perth, Australia, and had a younger sister at home that adored pastries which led him to pursue culinary. When both of you were done, preparing, you heard the sound of a bus coming down the front of the camp lodge. Looking at each other, you felt the nerves of the first day and how hectic it would be.

“What happened there? I thought you were killing him already? With the banging.” Laura teased. And you groaned at the table.

“Nope, I just introduced myself. We did no freaky things in there, it’s the kitchen. And also, I’ve learned a lot in the span of those almost two hours there.” You faced her. Not exposing details about Nick’s life as he might not like people gossiping about it, you respected him. He seemed like a private person. “Where’s your boyfriend?”

“Activities Coordinator and Assistant need to be in the front and center, parents ask a lot of questions. And I'm waiting for my friend.” She offered her hand to stand up and follow her. You haven’t even reached the front door and you could still hear the loud commotion outside. No wonder they heard your tantrums when you first came here, it was almost like the walls was thin.

“God, was I really that loud?” You asked and Laura nodded.

Kaitlyn saw both of you coming down the stairs, in front of her were two sets of 8 kids in a singular line. While the parents were off waving goodbye to their children and snapping pictures of their children’s event.

“Here is Cabin 3 and your cabin counselor.” Kaitlyn gleefully said as she handed you the list of children's names. 4 boys and 4 girls looking at you in awe. Looking over the full names.

Beside you was Nick who was walking and counting the heads of the children. 

“Okay. When I call you, say here.” Situated at the front, you called out their names one by one. Shit, you were in charge of 8 children.

“I teach you about insects.”

Suddenly you heard the bleat of a sheep. Max and Jacob had been holding the reins and all eyes were on the ‘star of the show’. Some children were in awe and some were afraid. Good thing the children were easily distracted, or else you’d already said some unkind words that would get you banned.

“Nice job there princess, you almost beheaded that child.” Dylan teased and you flipped him off. Kaitlyn drags your hand down to not let the children see.

“Behave. You two are acting like children too.” Kaitlyn scolded which in return made him stick his tongue out to annoy you.

“I can almost see the rage a mile away, what did he do to piss you off so bad?” Jacob asked. Baring your teeth as you look in the devil spawn’s direction.

“Maybe we should just take a breather for a second, get some cold water from the fridge. It’s only just the first day.” Emma tried to lighten the atmosphere at your table. Drinking your water in one go, you glared at the back of the child’s head. 

“Here.” Someone had passed you their drink as well. Not even realizing who, grabbed the cup and felt the warmth of someone’s hand. You didn’t even go to look who had given you the glass, you were just angry at the child.
