João Paulo Balsini, born in Joinville, Santa Catarina, in 1976, has emerged as one of Brazil's most exciting contemporary visual artists. His academic background in law, combined with his extensive studies in visual arts at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV) and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, has given him a unique approach to art. His work draws deeply from personal experiences, blending autobiographical narratives and confessional storytelling with powerful visual expressions. Balsini’s art often features aggressive figuration, raw gestural marks, and a sense of unfinished or imperfect lines, emphasizing both vulnerability and strength in his portrayal of masculinity.
Since 2024, Balsini has gained recognition on the international art scene, exhibiting in renowned locations like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon, Milan, and Paris. He recently participated in a collective exhibition organized by Bianca Boeckel during Art Week in Paris and also showcased his work at the Untitled art fair in Miami. His exploration of personal and emotional themes, as well as his engaging and intense visual language, has earned him a prominent spot in the global contemporary art conversation.

It all started in December of 2018, with a sneak peek on social media from the author and screenwriter of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise, J.K. Rowling, who, after announcing the completion of her newest screenplay, posted the following phrase on her Twitter: “Rio de Janeiro had better brace itself.”
A month earlier, Rowling had already made a mention about 1930’s Rio de Janeiro in a tweet that led to curious speculation from Brazilian fans of the franchise: what did old Rio have to do with the creator of Harry Potter?
In the following weeks, it was discovered that the author had set her newest film creation in the marvelous city of Rio. The project’s production team, following her lead, began to plan trips to Brazil in order to film certain older areas of downtown Rio and use them as backgrounds for the 3rd episode film of the film series. And Brazil Production Services was the Brazilian production company chosen to head the production unit in Brazil of this international mega-blockbuster.
When Warner Brothers contacted BPS, the job at hand involved the mapping and scanning of dozens of buildings and areas in downtown Rio de Janeiro, where several buildings from the city’s colonial, imperial, and turn-of-the-century periods are located. This material would then be used by the film’s visual effects team to digitally reconstruct the city circa 1930 by way of computer graphics. The idea was to do something big, exploring the city’s beautiful backdrop that could transport the fans to a magical version of Rio de Janeiro of that time.
However, the coronavirus arrived in Brazil in March of 2020, causing the production plan and the script to undergo dramatic changes.
Actor Eddie Redmayne, in an interview, spoke about the final version of the film that was released worldwide in April 2022: “The whole section that is set in Bhutan was meant to be set in Brazil … we were meant to travel and go and shoot there. Then COVID hit.” The actor lamented the cancellation of Rio as a main location – and so did we at BPS…
And so, what was supposed to be an intricate shoot in Rio showcasing some of its most interesting architecture turned out to be a production with only one of these locations. This location was a quick shot at an iconic location in Rio, in which the magical community of the city celebrates the victory of Vicência, a character played by the Brazilian actress Maria Fernanda Cândido.
The location in question was none other than the big house at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, a world-renowned location with that also features Rio’s famous statue of Christ the Redeemer in the background.
The beautiful house was scanned by the BPS team using LIDAR technology, which, according to the company’s Executive Manager Valéria Costa, is a tool widely used for building digital environments nowadays. The technology captures and measures properties of reflected light falling upon structures and, from that data, accurately documents a building’s 3D characteristics, providing the post-production team with high quality raw material to work on for the creation of digital backgrounds.
Anyone who blinks might miss the lightning-fast appearance of Rio in the final version of the film, but at least it gave a taste, however small, of Rio’s beautiful scenery. In short, after months of doubt as to whether or not Rio would be the setting for the film, the image below was what was left of the author’s original conception in the final form of the film.
Although disappointed with the shrinking of Brazil’s participation in the project, we look back on the experience philosophically affirming that one scene is better than no scene at all, right?

Amid a forest, museum showcases cars linked to social, political, and cultural events in Brazil since the late 19th century
Carde - Arte Design Museum, in Campos do Jordão (SP), will open to the public on November 28th, with tickets priced at R$120
Amid the frenzy of the 1920s, magnate Henrique Lage fell for the Italian mezzo-soprano Gabriella Besanzoni after watching her perform. He married her and brought her to live in the mansion now known as Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro's Jardim Botânico. One of the gifts he bestowed upon her was an Isotta Fraschini, an Italian import synonymous with luxury at the time. This tale of love is recounted in one of the rooms at the Carde - Arte Design Museum, an institution in Campos do Jordão, SP, which aims to narrate the history of Brazil through automobiles and opens to the public on November 28th with tickets priced at R$120.
The Carde Museum houses 102 cars with the goal of revisiting historical events that have influenced Brazil's social, political, and cultural life since the late 19th century, using the vehicles that were introduced into Brazil and later even assembled locally.
The cars form part of a 500-vehicle collection acquired by businesswoman and philanthropist Lia Maria Aguiar. Some of these vehicles belonged to Og Pozzoli, who passed away in 2017 and was one of Brazil's most renowned collectors of vintage cars.
— Our challenge was to make the museum appealing to those who aren't automotive enthusiasts, and we achieve this by merging art and education. The aim was to truly transform Carde into a teaching tool as well — says Luiz Goshima, the museum's executive director.

Luiz Zerbini was born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1959. He lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Across his career, which spans over three decades, Luiz Zerbini has developed a complex visual vocabulary at the intersection of figuration and abstraction. He first emerged within the generational (and global) ‘return to painting’ of the 1980s, centred in Rio de Janeiro around the Parque Lage School of Visual Arts and subsequently defined by the landmark exhibition ‘Como vai você Geração 80?’ (How Are You Doing, 80s Generation?, 1984).
The grid — a formal leitmotif closely associated with modernism — heavily features in the artist’s recent paintings, a subtle nod to the mosaic pavements and façades of Brazilian tower blocks. Using it as a compositional structuring device, numerous works show geometric forms juxtaposed with lush, tropical flora. A cacophony of colour, these works convey the immersive and seductive quality of Brazil’s natural environment. Flooding the viewer’s perception, Zerbini tries to provide the impression of “being in the painting as you could be in a forest.”

rambly post about eroica brazil plot under the cut
a while back was discussing with my friend the idea of a FEWL plot taking place in brazil, either the late 70s or early 1980s. i wasn't really able to conceive of a plot that wasn't heavy with the spy politics stuff, first because i just enjoy those more, and second because excluding the politics or leaving it to happen in the background, kind of like happens in the insha'allah chapter, felt kind of wrong to me (two european randos breaking into a historical building to steal national treasures.. no thank you)
context 1: brazil was in a (US backed) military dictatorship since 1964, and would go on until 1985, and direct elections wouldn't happen until 1989
context 2: me and my friend call The Organization (you know the one) as HATO as an inside joke lol
for eberbach's side, i thought of something along the lines of: despite not being north america or even being in the north, the brazilian government is on the talks to join HATO. the press-given reason is to protect the country of the communist "threats" of the guerilla groups of the 1970s, and the real motive being to fill brazil with even more US and EU military bases (i'm pretty sure there were ones already during that time, unsurprisingly), maybe even put nuclear missiles in brazil, pointed right towards cuba
and y'know, at first he does not give a shit, he has never been outside that part of europe, central asia (i think is the right term) and north africa before, but slowly starts to see the motives and the people arround him as shady, especially the weird brazilians who keep walking up to him and asking about his family and the "german military"
and then with dorian, it was a little harder for me to think about, but nevertheless more fun. as much as he likes medieval and byzantine artworks, which are less of the "standard" european art we're used to, he doesn't like anything modernist, which is what brazil is most famous for, and frankly, for very good reasons (MUCH prettier than modernist european art too mind you)
nevertheless, i'd love to see him be chased after and then trick some bootboys over these two works by pedro américo lol (hamlet's vision and night accompanied by the twins of study and love, something like that)
and on a more intimate level well. i also discussed it with my friend and i loved the idea of dorian creating a commune on whatever castle he's staying in, a big imperial-age (19th century for us lol) villa/castle with a fuckass giant pool, maybe a view to the Christ statue (the Parque Lage in rio comes to mind), and besides all of his eroica gang guys he starts hosting brazilian artists/musicians there, falls in love and starts a relationship with one of them, and then, sadly, he leaves
i feel like it could be a good story... could be romantic, could be thrilling, even in the depressing and hopeless setting of the regime. maybe 75 year old aoike should visit brazil someday
also i literally live in são paulo but i could not think of a story taking place here lol. the aesthetic is fully the man from rio
