Collecting people.
It was a hobby, in a sense.
More than that, actually; it was like being an Architect.
Taking a rough slab of marble and chiseling it into something greater than itself.
Having the ultimate authority and say in what it will and can become.
Margaret Spencer he found working at a firm in London as a secretary for what was his overseas business partner at the time, toiling with idiotic, menial tasks far beneath someone her class, capabilities and particular education level, coaxing, or rather pilching her from underneath her boss' nose by making her an infinitely better and more advantageous offer at employment back in Los Angeles, the same way he discovered Milos Dadok in Prague as a hotel concierge, working for cheap change east of the Iron Curtain, with barely any visitors to serve in an old, Bohemian golden lobby of a run down, neglected establishment that mostly stood empty, having seen better times. Snake and Dennis he picked off of the streets after they've brazenly tried to mug him of all people, failing comically, much to his infinite amusement, deciding to keep them around purely on the off chance their antics made him laugh --- and that they did, frequently and several times a day. John himself. That was a friendship he wanted ever since the first time he saw him at basic training and then later, during orientation, on ground, in Vietnam, and the best of friends was precisely what they remained because it was something Terry cultivated, invested into with the greatest of devotions. Even Ponytail, he carried around with him, on his head, fastened to his scalp with an unassuming black hair tie, nobody realizing he was ever there. Nobody but him and John, at this point. Where others saw nothing, he tended to see opportunity. And opportunities? Opportunities were things he never had the habit of passing up on, wanting to be in control of what becomes of the rough, ragged slab of marble under his fingers as he presses down on its hardened, sleek surfaces, leaving behind ever so many dents, fingertips and markings, deciding what shape it'll ultimately take once he's done with it. Deciding if he'll make it or break it. Create a beautiful statue or ram his fist into it, shattering the project into pieces.
Then, there was you.
Homeless.
A typical sight outside of Beverly Hills.
Aimlessly mingling around what was John's dojo for months now, buzzing around the alleyways like a little fly at the mouth of the serpent's nest, often in his sight and crosshairs through the lowered shutters of the interiors of the studio space where he could spy on you accordingly; it was Terry's business. He made it his business. Everything that happened in and around this dojo, in its adjoined streets, neighborhoods, blocks, in the heart of this very city, country, the West coast itself, concerned Terry exclusively, the way the markings lining the palms of his hands concerned him, more so when he occasionally found you casting uncertain, tentative glances at nearby garbage cans dotting the sidewalks akin to so many eyesores, like you were ashamed of yourself, like you were unaccustomed and new to this, carrying collected cardboard, for what he only assumed was for the purpose of rough sleeping down on the concrete; on one occasion, it went as far as him catching you slumming it out by leaning against the inner walls of the Cobra Kai dojo itself after working hours, obscured from view at dawn, knees pushed up against your chest, startled and taking to running the minute you spotted him pulling into the parking lot, his blue Ford intended to give off the airs of working class relatability still enough to startle you into a frightened state of movement, a tinge of satisfaction running through like a current trying to imagine what your reaction would be if you ever ran into him at another part of town, Rolls Royce, Tuxedo, private chauffeur and all. But, this crap you were doing right now wouldn't cut it. You didn't get to utilize his territory like this, it wasn't for free, not without being confronted about it one way or another. So, he ambushes you one morning, coming in even earlier than he had the habit of doing so, two hours before the Larusso twerp had the tendency to show up for his classes in pain, tactically cutting off your usual escape trail tightly and very neatly pushed in between two buildings. You shriek at the sight of him.
He relished the sound.
You wouldn't mind hearing more of it.
-"You won't survive long out there."-
Terry states bluntly, but not unkindly; last thing he wanted now was for you to get a tremendously bad first impression of him, even though you by default pushed his hand by making him come head to head with you the way he did through your incessant running. Luckily for you, he liked to chase. You give him a look, like you knew. Like you knew survival wouldn't be easy out here, but you didn't feel like necessarily vocally agreeing with him. Was it pride? It was pride, wasn't it? It's only once he hands you the lunch he's been hiding behind his back that your eyes widen and you become responsive, eyes shimmering, albeit still overshadowed with carefulness. Not that he couldn't appreciate your raw survival instincts being on display. -"I can protect you."- He offers, once you fidget, stepping forward and reaching for the food being given freely, practically ripping it out of his hand to shove it into your mouth in greedy gulps, undoubtedly, fearing he'd change his mind or that this was some kind of trap, keeping your focused gaze still on him. Once you swallow, you immediately take the first given opportunity to snipe at him, appearing defensive. He chuckles. -"What's it to you, though!? Who are you? Why'd you startle me like that!?"- You demand and he bows his head, ever so slightly, sprinkling in a deliberate aura of something apologetic and respectful for you to spot, making introductions. Weird place to be formal, he understood that much, but it was shocking how far some propriety could go applied at exactly the right time and under the right circumstances. But then again, the back wall of the Cobra Kai dojo, when he really thought about it, was as good of a place as a sparring mat to pay homage. -"I'm Terry Silver. The co-owner of the establishment you're roughing it out around. I own the whole lot."- He explains, softly, watching your demeanor change. Like a slab of marble, you start to take shape, even now. He extends his hand and you never even realize you've already been collected by him as you hesitate to take it.
-"And I can be your good friend."-
Terry promises, meaning every word of it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
What is Blue World City? Blue World City Islamabad is a housing project on Chakri Road in Rawalpindi. Who is the owner and developer of Blue World City? Blue World City is a project of Saad Nazir’s Blue Group of Companies. Shan Jian Municipal Engineering Company in China has been tasked with developing this massive project. Is BWC a legal housing society? The RDA has approved the society’s layout planning permission, and the society has applied for the renewal of NOC for the extension area, which is in the process of being approved but rest assured that Blue World City is a legal housing society. When will be the possession of plots given in society? The plots are expected to be available in 3 to 4 years. Due to the early development of the blocks in that phase, possession will initially be granted to plots in phase 1 of the society. Who is the Blue World City Brand Ambassador? It pleasantly stated that Blue World City signed Esra Bilgiç as the brand ambassador.
Conclusion:
Blue World City Islamabad is a dream housing society for the people of Pakistan. The main attractive feature of this society is that it is affordable and also provides every modern facility. Society is still in the development stages so the prices are still low. Once, the society is fully developed in 1 to 2 years then the prices may go higher and then these low prices will not be available. Installment payment plans, affordability, and luxurious amenities are the top-selling points of BWC.

KPA 2023 Grand Tour Wrap Up (Tommy Nicholson)
I can confidently say for everyone that was a part of this trip that it was an unforgettable experience. The Grand Tour this year was filled with both historical locations and culturally important locations. As a group we visited Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia. Although we did not get to go overseas as originally planned, I’m sure either trip is great for their own reasons.
Out of the three cities I think that I liked New York the most. There isn’t another city in the world like it, and visiting it at some point is important to at least try to grasp the greatness of everything. Our first day in New York was the best overall day of the whole trip by a significant margin. The day was jam packed with awe-inducing sights back to back to back to back to back. We started in Central Park before grabbing lunch and going to the Met gallery, then we visited Radio City Music Hall, which was a highlight of the trip, ate at Hard Rock Cafe, watched Wicked on Broadway, then finally ended the night at Times Square. So many memories were made along the way and the entire day felt culturally relevant. Our second day was a lot of fun as well, and more historical sights were visited. We saw the Statue of Liberty on a cold foggy morning which I am sure is the best way to see it. We made our way to Ellis Island to see where immigrants made their way during the process of immigrating to America. Then, we ate New York pizza and made our way to the 9-11 memorial and museum which was a moving and overall sad experience but still important to see and learn more about. Our top of the World Trade Center NYC view was blocked by clouds, which was funny. We made our way to Grand Central Station and tried the Seinfeld black and white cookies our tour guide recommended, before going to Chinatown for dinner. New York was a beautiful and diverse city filled with unforgettable sights.
My second favorite city on this trip was Philadelphia. This city concluded our trip, and it sealed everything up wonderfully. I had visited Philadelphia once when I was younger, but I was not old enough to truly value its history and what Philly is as a city. The food in Philadelphia was the best overall, and that is most likely what I will remember about the city no matter how old I get. My favorite event of this trip was the Flyers NHL game we watched the first night. The Flyers are not great this year and the roster is flooded with youth. Alongside this, they were playing the best team in the pacific conference. Regardless, the boys came to play and kept everything interesting until the last minute or so. I’ll forever have a soft spot for the Flyers as they wee the first NHL team I ever watched in person. I can’t wait for them to win the Stanley cup in a couple of decades and I’ll be able to say I was a fan back when they were almost tied for the worst team in their conference.
The third city on our tour was by technicality my least favorite, but there was nothing at all wrong about it. It was still amazing just not as much as the others. Boston was a city I had wanted to visit for a very long time and one that I knew I would like, but upon visiting it just wasn’t as jaw dropping as the other cities. I love being able to walk everywhere and commute in better ways than driving, and Boston is one of the best cities in the world when it comes to that. The food was crazy good and the clam chowder I had in Quincy Market was a top three food experience, but the city was filled with wonderful historical sights that were starting to be poisoned by American consumerism which was sad to see. Old libraries were becoming chipotles or Walgreens and advertisements for Arby’s could be found covering historical sights around the city. It’s not too difficult to see past that, but it was a sadder sight to see regardless. In New York, the advertisements and modernity is blatantly in front of your face, which I think is better than trying to sneak it all in. The historical sights of Boston were probably the coolest overall. My favorite sight was the USS Constitution and learning about the first ever dry-docking station right next to the ship. I think this sight interested me because a senior at the United States Naval Academy can choose to be stationed there if he really wanted to. It very rarely gets picked and maybe once every five or so years someone picks it, but it is cool that the ship is still an active part of the Navy.
My favorite part of the entire trip was the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. I went into the experience knowing nothing at all and not expecting too much from it all, but I was blown away. The building itself and its history was beautiful and meaningful, but what was most important was the tour’s ability to cause visitors to rethink the prison system in America and prison worldwide. The Eastern State Penitentiary advocates against mass incarceration and is open to discussion surrounding solitary confinement. There are questions I had thought about a little long prior to this visit especially the morality of capital punishment and the death penalty, but this tour threw me right back into all of that and forced me to think more and more about everything concerning prison and prisoners. Another question our tour guide and the penitentiary in general wanted to pose to its visitors was why do we have prisoners? I thought this was especially cool because for most people including myself, we skip this step, and we try to solve a problem without a solid basis to start with. The tour’s four main points for having prisoners as a society were retribution, rehabilitation, deterrence, and incapacitation. Having these four points as a basis, someone could determine what they think is best, but no solution will ever be perfect which is another crazy aspect. Thinking about these sorts of things is very important for anyone that wants to develop a sound moral compass and I am sure it can grow one’s faith when the Bible is applied throughout as many lines of thought possible.
In conclusion, this trip was a very special one for all of my classmates and I. Thank you to the administration that chaperoned us throughout the experience and spent time away from their families to be with us. Thank you to all of the parents who chose to send and pay for us to go KPA to be educated and be given such a great experience. I am so glad all of us got there and back safely and had such a memorable time.

Beyond Beautiful and Surreal
3 minutes and 28 seconds to read.
        Saturday morning, 21 January 2023.
        Beyond Beautiful and Surreal
        Dream #: 20,487-02.
In the first part of my dream, I am walking west on King Street (from where I lived in real life many years ago) in Southside La Crosse. The scene holds the relaxing mood of the early evening.
I intuitively "walk with intent." Looking to my left, past the first urban block, I see the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen in the dream state. It is a mountain in the distance with a lake in the foreground. There is a blue and purple essence. The sense of peace and bliss is astounding.
Eventually, an unfamiliar college man, presumably a tourist, says that the view, on its own, was worth the $35.00 he paid to arrive here (in America). He briefly stands on my left. I tell him that I agree with him. There is the implication that he recently traveled here from another country, though my dream lacks the logic that it would have cost much more (assuming he traveled by airplane from overseas).
After marveling at the soothing view for a few minutes, amazed at its surreal beauty and stability, I continue to walk west. The location suddenly changes, and I am walking west on Gillette Street in Northside La Crosse. I realize Skogen's IGA is nearby, and I should buy a few items for my family (having no recall Zsuzsanna and our children have only ever lived in Australia). Turning at the corner to walk north, I look into the grocery store's parking lot. It looks abandoned and resembles the Dodge City "Gunsmoke" set.
I find some recently discarded loaves of bread on an outdoor shelf. I try to will them to become different kinds of fresh bread (such as raisin bread for one of them), and they do. I notice an outdoor display near a store. It has food items, but I do not feel like taking any, even though the store is closed. I suddenly have a baby pram and put the other three food items in it.
I soon see that Skogen's IGA is still there after all - and is on the other side of the "Gunsmoke" set. Even so, the store is much smaller. Once inside, before I enter the main area, a young woman in front of the turnstile tells me that she has to scan my items to make sure they came from a different store - and this will also allow me to go through the checkout without any difficulties.
Curiously, the checkout is near the back of the store. I do not see much to purchase. I pick up a few packages of miniaturized pork steaks (about eight in each) with additional flavoring in the inwardly curved edges and more bread. I ask how much they cost. Each little piece, not much bigger than a finger, is $19.95 (making each pack about $160.00 for a small amount of meat and about $480.00 for what I am holding). The cashier tells me they are too expensive and that I should save money for my daughter's college education (even though I have two daughters).
The store becomes more surreal and without much space. I tell them I have not been here for many years and how it is now like being "on another planet." As I leave, I mentally teleport the food items into the pram without paying for them. (This act contradicts my dream self persona’s continuity. I did not take the food items from the outside display near the closed store when no one else was around - other than what was discarded - yet I teleported items into the pram while in the open store. Even so, food items would not be on display at night outside a closed store in the first place.)
Another blatant error is ongoing here. Even though I know my family and I live in Australia, we are also living in America (though here, my dream does not indicate where in America). (Compartmentalized virtual amnesia.)
I walk through the streets at night, the ongoing narrative discarded. Several unfamiliar people are also walking around. The setting is so incredibly vivid and surreal that I find it fascinating. I think because it is "like another planet," I can cause buildings to explode.
I suddenly have a television remote control (my somatosensory response to dreaming in its usual place in a dream's timeline). I press the "+" button, and a beam of light makes a building explode a few blocks away.
The setting is so surreal (and unrealistic in real-world terms) that it defies description. Everything has the look of a pixelated computer game from years ago. When the top of the building explodes in fire, it appears as glowing cubes shifting around. Everything is blue, white, yellow, and gray, and there is a smooth metallic essence over everything. I shoot with the TV remote at a closer building. "Fire" instantly appears in windows in sequential order as shifting glowing squares. There is a loud intriguing sound, similar to the chirping music of video games (such as the beginning of Pac-Man) from years ago.

Cairns, 1703 km north of Brisbane
the perfect starting point for exploring Far North Queensland. The coastal attractions include the magnificent Great Barrier Reef and, further north, the tropical beaches of the Marlin Coast. Inland you will find the rainforests and plains of the Atherton Tableland and the Gulf savanna. To the north lie the lush Daintree National Park and the varied wet-tropics landscape of Cape York. Are you also excited to buy diary planners, check out a big collection of diary planners with best price here.
The city itself mixes grand colonial architecture, old pubs and high-set Queenslander style homes with modern shopping malls and apartment blocks. In the early days Cairns and Port Douglas were great rivals but in 1924, when
the railway line from Brisbane was terminated at Cairns, Cairns then became the major city in North Queensland. It has grown at a phenomenal rate since 1979, with many new suburbs appearing as if by magic -its population is now 101,000.
The city is a major tourist destination for overseas travellers, especially since the opening of the Cairns International Airport. It is also a popular holiday destination for Australians wanting to experience this part of their own country. Accommodation ranges from the luxury island resorts and five star hotels to rainforest retreats, family units, camping and caravan parks to backpacker hostels. There is a stunning array of things to see and do in Cairns. Explore the deserted mining towns and the small isolated communities that still service the mining and pastoral industries. Take a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming or just admiring the myriad life forms and fascinating colours of the coral.
The Kuranda Scenic Rail ride up the range west of Cairns goes through tunnels, over bridged ravines and past the Coral Sea at Australia AdventuresBarron Gorge waterfalls, arriving at the station of Kuranda, reputed to be the prettiest railway station in the country. The Kuranda markets are famous for their variety and quality. Also, there is a 7.5 km trip to Kuranda on the Skyrail, the world's longest gondola cableway, which rides above the World Heritage rainforest canopy, with spectacular views of the Coral Sea beaches, cane fields and the mountains.
Other activities include whitewater rafting down the Tully River, a thrilling hot-air balloon flight at sunrise, a 4WD safari through the rugged outback country, or a Tiger Moth or helicopter sightseeing ride over spectacular waterfalls and rainforests. The Australian Woolshed puts on shearing and working sheep dog demonstrations, and Barron Gorge Power Station, an underground hydro-electric power station, is open for tours.
The future of Cairns seems well assured, with the tourist industry continuing to grow, the $100 million Sherga RAAF Base near Weipa currently under construction, the multi-million dollar Tully Millstream hydro-electric scheme and the possibility of the Cape York Space Station project finally becoming a reality. Cairns' main annual festival, 'Fun in the Sun', is held every year in October.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents on Oct. 4, rescued three Guatemalan undocumented non-citizens who were being held for ransom. Their suspected hostage takers were also arrested. The Albuquerque Police Department assisted with the rescue of a mother and her two daughters – ages 5 and 9. In the course of their investigation, special agents encountered 58 undocumented non-citizens. Marcelo Alonso-Almaraz, 32, and Eloisa Almaraz-Vasquez, 35, both undocumented non-citizens from Mexico, are charged with human smuggling and hostage taking. Alonso-Almaraz is also charged with possession of a firearm. Both made an initial appearance in federal court Oct.4, and attended a preliminary and detention hearing today, where they were ordered held without bond pending their judicial proceedings. The three Guatemalans were allegedly being held for ransom in an apartment in the 500 block of Palomas Drive in Albuquerque. According to court documents, a relative residing in Arizona paid $30,000 to have her sister and two nieces smuggled into the United States. However, the smugglers demanded an additional $6,000 to release them. “What started as a joint effort by HSI and the Albuquerque Police Department to rescue kidnapping victims, revealed not just the illicit movement of people, but a criminal network involved in extortion,” said HSI El Paso Special Agent in Charge Francisco B. Burrola. “Human smuggling is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, and the individuals being smuggled are viewed as cargo by the transnational criminal organizations, whose nefarious activities demonstrate a total disregard for both our laws and for human life.” On Friday, HSI Albuquerque special agents conducted an enforcement action and rescued the kidnapping victims, apprehended 10 undocumented non-citizens, and arrested Alonso-Almaraz and Almaraz-Vasquez off of I-40 in a commercial parking lot, where the hostage takers were to receive the additional smuggling fee. Later in the day, special agents executed a search warrant at the apartment on Palomas Driver where they located an additional 48 undocumented non-citizens, seized nearly $47,000 in U.S. currency, ledgers, a firearm and a loaded magazine. Forty of the undocumented non-citizens were from Mexico; 14 from Guatemala, and four from Ecuador. Court documents show that there was an inadequate food supply, lack of water and severe overcrowding in the apartment. The public is urged to report suspicious smuggling activity by calling toll-free 1-866-348-2423, or by completing a tip form online. HSI is a directorate of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), responsible for investigating transnational crime and threats, specifically those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, travel, and finance move. HSI’s workforce of over 10,400 employees consists of more than 6,800 special agents assigned to 225 cities throughout the United States, and 93 overseas locations in 56 countries. HSI’s international presence represents DHS’s largest investigative law enforcement presence abroad and one of the largest international footprints in U.S. law enforcement. 2nd September 2013
Dear Pete,
Bumped into that lovely mum of yours today. Can't help but feel it wasn't an accident as they aren't the types to frequent the sort of places within close proximity to the apartment.
"Liv, still single then?" Hugging me tightly I feel my ribs creak in protest. "Since twenty-four hours ago? Yes. I'm starting to feel like you're in an incredible hurry to marry me off. Or are you asking in case I've changed my position on the relationship that me and Christopher share?" Pulling away I put a safe distance between her and my weak bones.
She laughed and waved her hand dismissively in a manner not at all like her and I brace myself against for an unfamiliar attack. "Not at all, but I do think if you did something out of your comfort zone you'd be more likely to meet someone worth keeping around. Spend some time overseas. Move to another city for a while."
"There are two million men in this city!" I protested. " "That may be the case, but how have those two million worked out for you so far?" She's eying me sternly and I'm shrinking into the garden hedge behind me. "But I don't even want a boyfriend," I mumble. "You just don't want me around Christopher..." "Leave her alone, Maria. There is nothing wrong with being single. Better than having her marry the wrong one." He shoots her a look I cannot read and I feel a pang of jealousy wishing I had some someone to exchange meaningful looks like that with. Winking at me so she won't see, I'm reminded of Christopher. Your Dad has never said anything, but I've always suspected he was probably a bit of a ladies man before Miss Maria came along.
"I really am okay. Promise. Besides, it's not like I sit at home at nights lonely and pining. Chris and I keep each other entertained." There is a beat. And then it clicks. The horrified look on your mother's face is only outdone by the amusement on your father's. "Oh God! Not like that! Oh. Oh no. I have to go." "Yes. Go," she says and grips your father's arm so tightly her nails may need to be surgically removed at a later point.
Scurrying away in shame, I walk a few blocks breathing deeply through the humiliation and round the corner heading home. I am a little shocked to find a hint of a smile lifting my cheeks as I get there. I shouldn't be shocked though, because it happens every time I round that corner.
I might've just had the best session ever at CrossFit, or it might have sat me on my rear and taught me a lesson; work could've been a day full of laughter or Miranda may have chastised me in front of everyone; maybe I was out with friends relaxing; or stressed and waging a war against the world; maybe Buffy was a comfort or maybe he was chewing up more shoes and dresses, making me wish we'd gotten the dishwasher... Regardless of what sort of day it is, my favourite part is always travelling home.
The best part of that journey is right before I round the corner and turn onto our little street in the "less desirable" part of town (as your parents like to remind me regularly...), because before I round that corner there is so much hope. There's potential and the chance for that thing I wanted so much for so long.
Maybe I watch too many movies or I have some old-fashioned idea of how things should be, but before I go round that corner and the worn-out apartment building comes into view, every single day that's my favourite part of the day. For those few seconds there's hope that he might be there. That some familiar car will be parked out the front and he'll be waiting larger than life for me on our front steps.
I don't even know who he is, I just want there to be someone who loved me enough that they couldn't leave me behind and they came back to tell me so.
Even though it's silly and it will never happen, that's still my favourite part of the day because each and every day for a few seconds there's that hope. Rounding the corner I'll look up and I'll feel it - it's that feeling everyone talks about.
If there is someone for everyone then I haven't met mine yet. Your mother is in such a hurry to marry me off - and I feel heavy with guilt at disappointing her - but it's not going to happen based purely on her wanting it enough. It absolutely can’t happen while I’m still so unsure if I even want it.
I know he'd never admit it, what with the way it obviously emasculates him, but Christopher does actually have emotions including sometimes being sad. All "the guys" were invited round to the apartment tonight and somehow I was roped into being an honorary guy because they were plans he couldn't get out of and he needed to lean on someone for a change. Pseudo-Girl: my superhero alter ego.
Everyone has gone home to their own beds, I've finally convinced Chris that there is no need to continue blasting 'Make Me Lose Control' and that he should retire both the 80s songs and himself for the night. Thirty-two. There's a part of me that's surprised he even made it that far.
I'd say that I miss your face, but I've got an exact replica passed out in the bed beside me because he crawled in and went to sleep without a word and now I don't know what to do with him. You know what I mean though. Identical twins or not, I still miss your face.

SSSSStakeout
Stakeout. Baltimore. Not an X file. Skinner had assigned them.
He called them in the day before. Immediately, he had Scully’s complete undivided attention. Mulder was predictably peevish. Pouting. God, why was he always like this?
“You have been carefully selected to be part of this team. The human trafficking task force here in DC has been working to get these guys for two years.”
“It’s just that, Sir, we’re the only two agents assigned to the X files. What if a case comes up while we’re on this other thing?”
“Mulder. Last week I found you a mutant in California. Don’t be a pain in the ass. We’re closing in on arrests here. And we need experienced agents. It’s only a couple days. One mistake could make it all go boom.”
Scully was raking him over, pinning him with some serious side eye. Skinner shut up and ducked down to pretend to get something from a bottom desk drawer. Allowing her the space to persuade him with those peepers. God knows they had worked him over once or twice. Maybe three times. Jeepers creepers.
These two. He was something. But she, she, she? She was something else.
Skinner’d gone to high school with a kid named Brett Miller who was a freakishly good athlete. And he played basketball with this guy. Class of 1970 and to this day, he still held a handful of school records. He’d gotten a full ride at Villanova then played a couple of years in the NBA, plus ten more overseas. Their coach was old school, never one for gratuitous praise. He ran their asses off in practice, had them drill on defense ninety percent of the time.
One day they were working on mastering a full court trap press. Nobody was supposed to shoot the ball. An inviolable rule. But Brett, once he quit holding back, he singlehandedly broke the press with ease. Then he skittered out of double coverage with a behind the back dribble and launched a shot from forty feet. When the ball was in the air, everybody gasped. Then it fell through the hoop, nothing but net. Brett fell to his knees and grabbed his head.
“Sorry, Coach. Sorry guys,” he said, and fell down prostrate on the court. “Glad he’s on our team,” their coach quipped. Gruff old guy.
Then had them all run five suicides before sending Brett to the showers and resetting the press. Supposedly it was a punishment, but Skinner knew even then that coach wanted them to practice against normal human boys. They won a state championship six weeks later.
That’s how Skinner felt about Mulder and Scully. They tended to muck things up. But all in all, he was glad they were on his team.
“OK, Sir.” Mulder said, when Skinner was back in his seat and facing them thirty seconds later. He was gripping the arms of his chair.
Scully nodded. She’d won this round. And she’d seemed relieved and pleased, Skinner thought, her pigheaded partner had knuckled under.
Thirty-six hours later, they sat on a squalid block in outside a row of strip clubs. One way street, narrow and dim. Parked in a ‘68 Mustang (special issue motor pool) equidistant from three pertinent businesses demarked by tawdry awnings inked in flagrant fonts: Norma Jean’s, Pussycat, and Club Hustler.
Fifty yards from the front entrance of the Charm City Suites, with a view also of an emergency exit up a narrow alley. Eyes trained on doors, tracking comings and goings. Nothing yet.
Inside, a trio of Albanian bad guys were allegedly holding between ten and twelve women from all corners of the globe against their will. Seduced with promises of opportunity and liberty, then stowed, stashed, and shifted to this small seamy corner of the supposedly free world. They were displaced and disempowered, lacking a common language or a lay of the land. Forced into rough trade.
It was a delicate operation. These guys had reach, and assets, a dozen identities between them and links with organized crime, plenty of cash in offshore accounts. If they were tipped, they’d simply disappear. Never be brought to justice.
Not a X file. But a handful of real assholes who needed to be off the streets. He knew this. Lately, he’d been trying to, you know, grow up. With the new year coming up, hell, a new Millenium in fact, he was considering a resolution. Change is hard.
They had drawn the midnight to 8 am shift. Their cover was, she was a dancer at Norma Jeans, and he was her boyfriend. If the subjects —they had extensive dossiers on all three— took interest or noticed them, she was on a break, visiting with him outside in his car.
She was Scarlett, he was Mulcahey. That was it. They were to improvise from there, as necessary. There were lone agents posted in all three titty bars, plus a pair staying in the hotel, all original members of the task force.
Scully was next to him, an arm’s length away across the bench seat of this seriously sweet ride. Not that he was a car guy, but Gawd.
Two hours in, a silence had settled between them. Not uncomfortable. Scantily clad as per their cover, she hummed as a shiver ran through her. Mulder eyeballed her and turned over the key. The engine roared to life. Soon a weak plume of heat seeped out from the floorboards and pooled around their ankles.
“If we could take her for a spin, I could warm you up properly, Scully.”
She quirked an eyebrow at him.
“What? V eight and all. Kind of irksome, just to have to sit here idling. Makes me feel... impotent.”
Beside him, huddled around her cup of lukewarm coffee procured on the way over, she began to shiver.
“Aw, Scully. Crap.”
He stripped off his black leather jacket and she sat up, allowing him to drape it over her shoulders. He still wore several layers. A long sleeved slub cotton white v neck tee, a chambray dress shirt, slippery and moss green. Stiff jeans dyed dark indigo. Black boots.
She eyed his outfit. Shook her head. Unfair. She wore only a leopard print mini dress. Straight from central casting. Really.
“Thanks,” she said, glad for the warmth. And the masculine creak, the almost alive redolence of hide. She snuffed her nose against the collar, breathed him in. Thought of his sofa.
“Skinner warned us,” he said, imitating him. “This is not a warm body stakeout, Agents.” She smothered a laugh.
This pleased him. He smiled.

9/11 Bill POV
While Hillary was in Washington and Chelsea in New York, Bill was in Australia. Here's an extract from Man of the World by Joe Conason, describing the events from that day.
In Clinton’s suite at the Sheraton Mirage, a luxurious hotel surrounded by palm trees, he turned on the television to see the nightmarish images that would soon become a historic symbol of horror for Americans. Across the bottom of the screen, a crawling ticker listed the names of passengers on the four flights hijacked by the al Qaeda terrorist teams. Suddenly, Clinton saw the name of a friend, someone who had worked with him for years, a man with a family of his own. “Oh my God,” he breathed.
He knew Chelsea was in New York City, visiting a friend before her scheduled departure for England. Now he had to find out exactly where she was and who was with her, but nobody had been able to find her yet. When Hillary finally got through to his room, she pretended to know already that their daughter was safe, hoping to calm him—even though she felt inwardly frantic as her Senate staff continued to try to locate their daughter.
By her own account, Chelsea had been watching television at her friend’s apartment in Union Square when the second plane hit, and quickly tried to call her mother in Washington—but as she spoke with an aide in Hillary’s office, overburdened phone lines went dead. In a panic, she left the apartment and headed downtown, searching desperately for a pay phone to reach Hillary’s Senate office again. She was standing in line at a pay phone, about twelve blocks from the disaster scene, when she heard the deafening roar of the second tower collapsing. She headed back toward Union Square, eventually found her friend, and they walked uptown, like thousands of other New Yorkers. When she found a working phone and reached Hillary, her mother burst into tears of relief.
At Clinton’s office in Harlem, Karen Tramontano and members of the foundation staff were meeting in a conference room with a panoramic southward view when they saw the first plane. Someone came running into the room and suddenly they were watching the catastrophe on television. Tramontano picked up a phone immediately, trying to reach Band in Australia.
With all flights into the United States canceled, the Clinton entourage was stranded in Australia. After talking with Band, Tramontano placed a call to Condoleezza Rice to ask for help. After some wrangling that involved more calls from Band to the Secret Service and to Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, the Pentagon dispatched a military aircraft to pick them up at Cairns Airport in Port Douglas. “It won’t be very comfortable,” Rice warned, “but it’s the only plane we have available out there right away.”
It wasn’t comfortable at all aboard the C-130 cargo plane and the trip took almost twenty-four hours. There were no seats, there was no food, and at thirty thousand feet, the interior of the plane was cold—very, very cold. They stopped in Guam and switched to a refueling plane, which was no better. Band had tried to scrounge some sweaters and other warm clothing at the hotel, but they were all bone-chilled, starved, and exhausted when the plane finally landed at Stewart Airport, a New York National Guard airbase about fifty miles north of Chappaqua. Almost immediately they departed for Manhattan, where they headed to Union Square.
Despite their ordeal, Clinton was grateful to have gotten home, unlike thousands of Americans left overseas with no way to return until the airports reopened. Among them was Al Gore, who had been in Vienna when the terrorists struck, giving a speech to an Austrian Internet forum.
Evidently the Bush White House was not prepared to provide military transportation for the former vice president, who could find no way to get back except via Gander Airport, a tiny facility in Newfoundland. From there, he and an aide would have to drive southward across the Canadian border.
While seeking help with their predicament, a former Gore aide—who had also worked in the Clinton White House—called the Harlem office. Gore and Clinton had exchanged messages within the first hours after the terrorist attack, but had not spoken yet. Distant as relations between their bosses had become, the staffers remained friendly. When Gore’s aide reached Tramontano, they talked casually about “the crap that’s gone on for far too long” between Gore and Clinton—who literally had not spoken since a bitter two-hour argument about who was to blame for the disastrous outcome of the 2000 election. She suggested that on the long drive down from the Canadian border, Gore might stop in Chappaqua. When Tramontano reached Clinton to discuss the proposed sleepover, she wasn’t surprised by his enthusiasm. That evening around 8 p.m., the former vice president picked up his cell phone to speak with the former president for the first time in many months.
“Why don’t you come down here, and then we’ll fly down together Friday morning?” Clinton asked. An Air Force jet provided by the White House would take them to the capital for the special memorial service on September 14 at the National Cathedral.
Hours after midnight, driving a rented car, Gore arrived at the five-bedroom colonial on Old House Lane. Clinton was waiting for them in the living room, where he had been napping on and off, and got up to greet Gore.
As he climbed the steps to the front porch, the former vice president noticed a refrigerator, sitting where it had been moved while the kitchen was undergoing renovation—a tableau that struck him as more hillbilly Ozarks than chic Westchester. Eyeing the fridge, he cracked, one Southerner to another: “Well, you’ve really come a long way, haven’t you?” At the door, Clinton roared with laughter.
They stayed up almost until dawn, talking mostly about the 9/11 attacks, their own efforts to deal with terrorism, and the murky times ahead. Chelsea met them in the morning at Westchester Airport to fly to Washington. On the flight down, Gore invited the Clintons to join his family after the memorial service for lunch at his home in Arlington, Virginia.
At the cathedral, a century-old Gothic Revival structure on the northern outskirts of the capital, Clinton sat in a front pew alongside President Bush and the other living former presidents, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H. W. Bush. He listened as the president delivered words of compassion for the bereaved and a warning to the enemy. He was speaking out forcefully in support of Bush at every opportunity, starting with his departure from Australia. He had canceled all of his speaking engagements abroad to remain in Manhattan, spending hours at local vigils and especially at the Armory on Park Avenue, where he tried to comfort families whose loved ones were missing and presumed dead.
“They cheered, they wept, they hugged him,” wrote a reporter for London’s Daily Mirror. “All around him, New Yorkers gathered, some to pass on their thanks that he had rushed to their side, others to grab his hand and use him as an emotional crutch. . . . All felt lifted to be in the presence of the man they had looked to for most of the past decade when their country was in its hour of need.”
The Mirror correspondent was not alone in contrasting Clinton’s instinctive leadership with the unsteadiness displayed by his successor in the early hours following the attack, although Bush soon righted himself and took command. America and the world had turned a page, moving beyond the petty controversies that had almost consumed Clinton in the days after he left office. Gaunt, somber, and worried, he and his fellow Americans now found themselves in a very different world.
Not everyone was willing to leave old habits behind, however, especially among Clinton’s most rigid detractors on the right. Even as Bush and congressional leaders prayed for the nation to unite, the habitual haters simply could not resist a fresh opportunity to target him. Nothing mattered more than proving (or at least asserting) that the terrorist attacks of September 11 should be blamed not on the current president, but the one who preceded him. Before long a writer for National Review warned, only half-jokingly: “If we members of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy don’t get back to our daily routine of obsessive Clinton-bashing, then the terrorists will have won.”
