SU2C and MLB Launch New PSA - "FOR ALL THE MOMENTS WE STAND UP"
Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is set to launch a brand new public service announcement (PSA) campaign in collaboration with founding donor, Major League Baseball (MLB). Embodying the spirit and sense of community synonymous with baseball, the campaign — titled “For All The Moments We Stand Up” — culminates with the now iconic SU2C placard moment when tens of thousands of fans, players, managers and other on-field personnel stand for a moment of silence to support a loved one affected by cancer. The PSA will debut on Tuesday, July 9 during the 2019 MLB All-Star Game Presented by Mastercard.
The new broadcast PSA will center on the lighthearted touchpoints that are iconic to baseball— standing to catch a foul ball, catching a bag of peanuts from a vendor, being featured on the jumbotron— before building up to the moving placard finale, which underscores the remarkable impact of standing together as one powerful, united force. The campaign, launching in July, will come to life across print, digital, radio and out-of-home media, including placements throughout the 2019 World Series presented by YouTubeTV.
The PSA is the latest collaboration between SU2C and MLB, marking MLB’s 11th year as a supporter of SU2C. To date, MLB has pledged more than $50 million to SU2C’s collaborative cancer research programs, providing invaluable support for research which has helped lead to six FDA approvals for new cancer therapies.
“We are proud that our partnership with Stand Up To Cancer has had a significant impact on cancer research over the last decade,” said Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. “This year’s campaign is yet another example of our sport’s commitment to raising awareness around this disease until every person who is battling cancer becomes a survivor.”
“The unparalleled support from our founding donor, MLB, has been nothing short of incredible,” said Rusty Robertson, SU2C co-founder. “Each year, the sight of thousands of fans from all walks of life, standing together, holding placards in support and in memory of loved ones, is such a powerful and emotional moment. MLB has amplified SU2C’s rallying cry across the nation, underscoring that almost all of us are touched by cancer in some way and no one is alone in this. We must continue to come together and raise our voices.”
The broadcast and English and Spanish language print PSAs feature Uzo Aduba, Jordana Brewster, Matt Damon, Zachary Levi, Joe Manganiello and Candice Patton, whose lives have all been touched by cancer in some way. The broadcast PSA also includes Connor, an Ewing sarcoma survivor, and Marshella, a breast cancer survivor. The broadcast PSA was developed by SU2C and produced by Shark Pig, an LA-based production company that produces everything from online ads to feature-length documentary films. Jesse Fleece, a Highland Park-based director who blends comedy and drama to tell human stories of love, hope and redemption, directed the PSA. The print campaign was produced by SU2C with photography by photographer Andrew Eccles, and art direction by Paul Moore.
In 2008, Major League Baseball, including its 30 Clubs, became the founding donor of SU2C. Since then, MLB has played a pivotal role in helping to fund groundbreaking research that translates to lifesaving treatments for cancer patients, pledging more than $50 million to support SU2C’s innovative research programs. In 2011, MLB and SU2C created the first-ever “placard moment” at the MLB All-Star Game. The placard moments have been a part of each All-Star Game and World Series, with tens of thousands of fans, players, umpires and stadium staff pausing to honor a loved one affected by cancer.
Over the past 11 years, SU2C’s collaboration with MLB has brought the cause into the homes of millions of baseball fans across the country. In addition to the impactful placard moments, SU2C and MLB have launched numerous campaigns to celebrate their collaboration including past PSAs involving SU2C ambassadors Steve Carell, Jake Gyllenhaal, Colin Hanks and Ken Jeong. MLB has provided a platform to significantly amplify SU2C's mission and make significant strides toward the day when all cancer patients become long-term cancer survivors.
Please visit standuptocancer.org/mlb to learn more about the campaign, and follow us on @SU2C across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the latest updates.

Stand Up To Cancer-supported Clinical Trials Seeking To Extend CAR T-cell Therapy to Solid Tumors, Reported at AACR Annual Meeting
This post was originally published on this site
ATLANTA, March 31, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is helping scientists make progress in one of the most important areas of cancer research today: expanding the use of autologous CAR T-cell immunotherapy beyond leukemia and other blood cancers to solid tumors such as osteosarcoma and mesothelioma. If ultimately successful, the research could pave the way for a dramatic expansion of a therapy that has revolutionized treatment of blood malignancies but thus far, has had little impact on the solid tumors that make up most cancer cases.
“We are proud to be at the forefront of finding ways to apply immunotherapy to a broader range of cancers for children and adults,” said Lee J. Helman, MD, director, Cancer Research Program Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, vice chair of the Stand Up To Cancer Scientific Advisory Committee. “Many challenges remain, but we are confident that this lifesaving therapy can be deployed even more widely and successfully than it already is.”
In CAR T-cell therapy, T-cells from the patient’s own blood are enhanced in the laboratory with specific components that allow them to hunt for cancer cells, multiplied into armies of cancer-fighters, and then given back to the patients, where they find and destroy cancerous cells.
Difficulties in applying the therapy to solid tumors have included the identification of antigens that will serve as targets for the CAR T-cells; getting (or “trafficking”) the cells to the tumors and getting them to stay there to attack the cancerous cells; and dealing with the immunosuppressive environment of the tumor.
Two clinical trials supported by SU2C illustrate the promise of CAR T-cell therapy in solid tumors and were featured at a press conference today at the Annual Meeting 2019 of the American Association of Cancer Research, which is also SU2C’s Scientific Partner. They are:
“A phase I clinical trial of malignant pleural disease treated with regionally delivered autologous mesothelin-targeted CAR T-cells: Safety and efficacy.”
Prasad S. Adusumilli, MD, first author, and Michel Sadelain, MD, PhD, senior author, both of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The study was supported in part by the SU2C-Cancer Research Institute Cancer Immunology Dream Team. “In this phase I clinical trial, intrapleurally administered MSLN-targeted CAR T-cells had no evidence of ‘on-target, off-tumor’ or therapy related toxicity, and there was evidence of CAR T-cell antitumor activity,” the authors reported. “MSLN-targeted CAR T-cell therapy combined with anti-PD1 agents shows encouraging clinical outcomes, thus a combination therapy trial is planned to recruit patients in the second quarter of 2019.”
“Administration of HER2-CAR T-cells after lymphodepletion safely improves T-cell expansion and induces clinical responses in patients with advanced sarcomas.”
The trial was supported by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation-SU2C Pediatric Cancer Dream Team, among others. Shoba A. Navai, MD, of Baylor College of Medicine is first author. Also, at Baylor are Meenakshi Hegde, MD, senior author; a young investigator on the Dream Team and a 2017 SU2C Innovative Research Grant recipient, and Nabil M. Ahmed, MD, principal investigator on the trial and a principal investigator on the Dream Team. The authors concluded: “Administration of lymphodepletion chemotherapy followed by autologous HER2-CAR T-cells is safely tolerated and is associated with objective clinical benefit in some patients with advanced HER2+ sarcoma. Immune correlative studies suggest that the HER2-CAR T-cells given in combination with Flu/Cy lymphodepletion induce endogenous immune reactivity. These findings warrant further evaluation in a phase 2 study as a single agent or in combination with other approaches.”
“SU2C is proud to support the scientists who have done this extraordinary work,” said SU2C President and CEO Sung Poblete, PhD, RN. “They are making meaningful contributions to SU2C’s research portfolio in the development of immunotherapy.” To date, SU2C has invested more than $175 million in the study of immuno-oncology.

Samuel Goldwyn to be Honored by Grandsons at Entertainment Industry Foundation Gala

Samuel Goldwyn to be Honored by Grandsons at Entertainment Industry Foundation Gala
12:51 PM PDT 3/20/2018 by Peter Kiefer
John and Tony will make a toast at Tuesday night’s gala celebrating the organization: “Samuel and Frances were people who understood hardship, and at various points in their lives people helped them without whom they might not have survived,” says producer John of his grandparents.
It was the early suffering he endured as a Polish immigrant that transformed Samuel Goldwyn into a pioneer of helping others. “Samuel and Frances were people who understood hardship, and at various points in their lives people helped them without whom they might not have survived,” says producer John Goldwyn of his grandparents. “So philanthropy was embedded in their worldview.”
And in John’s: He and brother Tony will be presenters at the March 20 gala celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Entertainment Industry Foundation — co-founded by Samuel Goldwyn with Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Gene Kelly, Joan Crawford and Cecil B. DeMille — and the more than $1 billion it has raised to support arts, education and health causes. “If he were alive, he’d be calling people around town and hustling them to do more because that is who he was,” says Tony. “But he would be thrilled with the way he still has a central presence in Hollywood and to know that things like the EIF are thriving.”
John recalls stories about his grandfather and his friends going to downtown Los Angeles during the depression and setting up a card table. A queue would then form of people who were facing some form of financial distress and then checks would be written by Goldwyn and others and then distributed to those in need.
It was during the war effort that the number of philanthropic campaigns by members of the entertainment industry proliferated. The efforts were well meaning but disparate, and every individual had their own pet cause. “Samuel Goldwyn had the idea in 1940 to pool all these charities together because he understood that collective impact was going to be much greater,” says John. “What is interesting is that that idea still prevails today.”
Asked which of their grandfather’s films exemplifies his social conscience, both John and Tony cite 1946’s The Best Years of Our Lives, the Oscar-winning drama about World War II vets facing difficulties as they re-enter civilian life. “It was the first movie ever to examine PTSD,” says John. “It had an outsized impact.”
The EIF gala will also honor Stand Up To Cancer CFA members Sherry Lansing, Katie Couric, Lisa Paulsen, Rusty Robertson, Sue Schwartz, Pamela Oas Williams, Ellen Ziffren, Kathleen Lobb and the organization’s president Sung Poblete with the Samuel Goldwyn Legacy Award for their work with Stand Up to Cancer, a division of EIF, which has raised more than $480 million to fight the disease.
