I want to talk about Women Talking , a movie I knew nothing about until yesterday. Thought it might be similar to the fox news harrasment one tbh.
I saw some people saying that the movie lack diversity, as in the protagonists. But this is a super exclusionary group that lives in Bolivia.
If any context could be missing is how they interact with the country around them. How their neighbors see them. Also the fact that Bolivia's judicial system is the one that investigated and took them to trial. Many of these people don't even know spanish, it wasn't easy.
This happened in Latin America and like I just reblogged, it's a thing. Isolated colonies of different types with horrific stories. Yes there are themes to explore here, but it goes beyond what I saw as criticism.
You can read this story about what happened ten years ago and what's going on now.
The power of the testimony she heard in the court room has stayed with Gladys Alba, one of the judges in the case: "They had the courage to confront their abusers and accuse them face to face. That's what impressed me."
....
Even so, wrong-doing can be forgiven. This is why Manitobans like Bernard Dyck, a farmer in his 50s, would like to see the men released from prison in Palmasola.
"We would welcome them back with great pleasure," he says. "And if they need anything, we'd like to help them. Our ministers always say we have to forgive, even if someone's committed a crime, that's why they've sent people to find out if the men can be freed."
Unsurprisingly, the lobbying by Manitoba's leaders is creating tension within the colony. Aganetha (not her real name) is very upset, her eyes watery behind steel-rimmed glasses. And she is frightened.
"A lot of people support the men in Palmasola. And if we - the victims - talk, those men in prison will hear, and families will be threatened."
The other thing I noticed is that the article talks about the Mennonite community and Bolivians as different things, they do this in the US as well. But i'm pretty sure some of them are Bolivian citizens. Were born here, they are from Latam.
