A surprise warm-up gig in Toronto before the Licks tour. I was at my desk at work in Montreal when I got an email from the band manager that I was invited. A quick cab ride to the airport, an obscenely expensive walk-up priced ticket (screw you Air Canada!) and I was in line with my $10 ticket.
Great concert, about 100 degrees, weird vibe as a lot of people were clearly 'glitterati' interested more in being seen than seeing the Stones in a 300-person capacity open-air dance pavilion. They treated it like a cocktail party. No matter, that let me easily reach a position dead-centre three people back from the waist-high stage.
A highlight for sure.

Happy Easter

I’m sitting in the palais royale next to a fountain. A man is serving ice cream in cones from a cart. A girl with sparkly gold shoes and a turquoise track suit sits next to me sipping her iced latte and a British couple behind me chatting about nothing in particular.
I’m feeling the same feeling at felt yesterday at the Pompidou when i saw a rainbow exhibition. It was a feeling of i don’t really know what it means or what utilitarian purpose it had but im very glad it exists.

That’s what i feel now. I don’t really know why i am here or what utilitarian purpose it brings but I’m glad i am existing here. In Paris. As i near my 22nd year.
I’m going to stay here for a while. God put on my heart that He wants me here. I don’t know how or specifically why. But if you know anyone who would be willing to house me or help me in paris please let me know.
Take care,
L
P.S. I saw this girl at the Palais Royale. I don’t know who she is, but she is my style icon.

Sixteen years ago yesterday
That morning I went to work here in Montreal and received an email from the Stones Toronto fan club telling me I could claim a ticket to this show if I showed up at the (Toronto) Skydome will-call window by 10AM. Without a second thought I raced down to the street and hailed a cab for the airport. When I went to the Air Canada wicket to buy a ticket I nearly had a heart attack when she smiled sweetly and said that would be $800. I gulped hard and pulled out my credit card.
When I got to the will-call at 9:58 with heart pounding the girl told me my name wasn’t on the list. Luckily I had printed out the email and showed it to her. I also showed her my plane ticket which made her eyebrows shoot up. She said come back in an hour while she called headquarters. I paced around for a nervous hour and when I re-appeared at the window she asked me for $10 and I broke into a huge grin of relief and yes, satisfaction.
The Palais Royale is an old dance pavillion on the shores of Lake Ontario just west of downtown Toronto. It was a steamy day with high humidity. We queued up for several hours outside as TV crews worked the barriers looking for interviews. There were people from the US, Europe, even South America. As I was standing in line I got a call from my girlfriend in Brazil, and my friend from Winnipeg next to me got a call from his girlfriend in Japan. Small world.
In the event the show was only mediocre. At big reason was the attitude of half the people there who bought cocktails from the bar in the back and chit-chatted like they were at a garden party, while the best band in the world was sweating it out 100 feet away. The other half of the 800 or so people there were pressing up against the small stage. I was about ten people back from Mick but spent most of my time studying Keith playing guitar. (Guitarists always watch other guitarists looking to cop licks. Keith is out of my league).
By the time the band slipped off-stage to a rousing ovation I was drenched in sweat but completely happy with my expensive day. As best as I could determine it was my 100th Stones concert (the 60′s are a little hazy...). That number has now reached 115, I doubt I’ll see another, but it was all worth the effort. The friends I met along the trail are people I will cherish forever.
You get what you need.
Setlist:
It's Only Rock'n Roll/Sad Sad Sad/If You Can't Rock Me/Stray Cat Blues/Hot Stuff/Don't Stop/Honky Tonk Women/Torn and Frayed/Wild Horses/Happy/I Can't Turn You Loose/Heart Of Stone/Can't You Hear Me Knocking/Jumping Jack Flash/Brown Sugar

So I was cleaning out my downloads folder and I found a .pdf copy of a Cinema Canada article reviewing both Palais Royale and Buying Time, since they came out in the same week, around May 1989? I must have downloaded it last September while looking for reviews, but I don’t think I looked at it until now??
Anyway, oh, Dean must’ve somehow stacked up two movies to film in Toronto back-to-back, since Palais Royale and Buying Time were both filmed around the same time. I think he picked up Buying Time because, hey, he’d already be in Canada and the timing worked out. And the article’s author says Dean in Palais Royale is great, but Dean in Buying Time isn’t so good, in inverse to the movies’ quality. (I agree for Buying Time, but I think that might’ve been due more to the writing- his character is basically there as sort of a device for the main character to figure things out)
#palais royale#buying time#the author also liked buying time and i disagree with him about that but oh well#i also have a film festival date for palais royale but it was recut and re-edited a lot damn

This makes me think of that one QL publicity picture where Sam’s in all those different outfits, including a hippie one, and Al’s holding up his hands like this.
#i remember allison captioned it as 'and al says casabas' but i can't find it now#quantum leap#palais royale
