Elven language in Dawn Fic

Elven language is based on Lord of the Rings, specifically the Sindarin strand. Here is what might be interesting to know:

An Elf’s name is their title + their actual name. Kyle has a title, then his actual name. Certain titles are missing: The words for Prince or Princess would be “lesser ruler” in whichever gender, or, as Kyle puts it, Heir or Heiress. 

Kyle’s last name remains the same, left over from the Elves he’s related to distantly.

Names:

Kyle-Taurlhain (Towr-lain) Literally means “King (translation of Kyle’s name)”

Wendy-Faendi (Fayne-dee) Name translated literally, added her title of running the caverns (which will be either lord or lady depending on gender preference) 

Stan-The Elves nicknamed him Lannon, (his name translation) but he won’t answer to it. Everyone calls him by his human name. 

Ike-Laldircaun (Lawl-deer-cawn) Basically means “Prince (translation of Ike’s name)” only see above for comment on titles. 

The Caverns-Raudhgath (Rawth-gath) Literally “Hollow Caverns”. 

Treetops-Tondcuil (Tond-cyeel) Best translation is “Living height” -close enough to colorodo to be high, I guess. (I’ll stop the jokes now.)

The Valley Castle Kyle was born in-Dunedhelbair (Dun-eth-el-bare) Literally means “Home of the Elves.” 

Now, English-Elvish translations can get a bit ugly if you try to go about it literally. For example. If anyone was wondering about Kenny:

Her birth name would have been translated literally as Bain, which she would have hated. Even worse, her official title would have been Hervesstir, (Herv-es-tier) meaning “Lady married to our Lord” (she can’t use a King’s title just because she’s married so she gets Lord, yay). Would you want to go by Hervesstir Bain Broflovki? No. No, you wouldn’t. So she’d go by Kenny. Or her title in Common: Lady Broflovski.

*psst. Kyle calls Mysterion Mortir-luin (More-tier-lou-en) Which means something along the lines of “A deathly gaze of blue” and Kenny kind of digs it.

Here is a heinously sketched map of the world they’re in. Maps are not my strong point, I don’t have the patience for it, I don’t think. But this might give you some idea of where things are. 

Points of Interest: 

The Keep can’t grow anything in the fields the Elves burned down. 

The sea is called Earador and the desert is Calad-ur. both human settlements in these areas are friendly and under unofficial protection of the Elves. (Since the Keep won’t offer protection anymore)

The treetops are called Tondcuil and extend all the way to the point where the Elven forest ends and the Barbarian tribes claim their territory. 

The Barbarian lands are called Duath by Elves, what the Wildmen themselves call them is unknown. 

All human settlements are listed under their human names. 

Garsham used to be a trade stop and still gets most of it’s money by trading with others on the road. (also raises a lot of domesticated animals).

Llahncrag is hungry as fuck. 

Brackish Chipping is the only settlement that deals with almost every other settlement, including the Elves, and therefore is the richest.

Balbeck and Garsham could see the flames on the horizon both from Dunedhelbair’s destruction and the Slaughter at the Keep. 

Elves are not allowed near the settlements of the Keep or Garsham under penalty of death. Aucherbost and Balbeck will trade with Half-Elves or humans (meaning Stan) but do not consider themselves friendly with the Elven Kingdom. 

Aucherbost is the most sucessful farm and end up trading most of what they get from the Elves back to the Keep and Garsham marked way up in price. 

Balbeck is full of assholes. Exhibit A: Craig was born in Balbeck. 

Caerstead is where the Elves get the fruit for the pink drink Kenny likes so much. 

Clyde, Butters, and Kenny were all born and raised in the Keep. Kenny lived outside in the farmlands while Clyde was raised in the village and Butters in the castle. The three tiers of poverty. (Cartman was born in the village and raised in the Keep).

Kyle, Ike, and Stan were born and raised in Dunedhelbair, and fled to the Caverns. (Ike was passed off in hiding since he looks fully human and no one knew the youngest Princeling wasn't Elven... he’s among sailors-turned-glorified-pirates. Guess which settlement took him.)

Wendy was born as a maiden of Tondcuil, girl was born in a tree and continues to be head and shoulders above everyone else. 

Tweek was born in the tribe his parents ran, running away with friends and followers to form his own tribe and take a human husband.

Races in Dawn of the Queen

Probably one of the most important things, given Kenny knows a lot about races even if she doesn’t know about anything else. :) Here’s what’s recorded in the world:

Humans

Humans have a lot of different settlements. Aercombe is the settlement you want, only everyone calls it the Keep. I’ll have another post about places in the story. Basically, Aercombe is now the name of the village, and Kupa Keep is the castle overseeing. There used to be miles upon miles of lush farmland outside the walls, but since the Slaughter (as the humans call it) nothing will grow, even though burning fields is normally good for crops. 

Humans in this world are typically smaller than normal, they have the highest death rate and are viewed as the “slower” race. They haven’t made many industrial or ecological discoveries worth noting, and their only major positive is they outnumber every other race and are very resilient. They have a settlement everywhere, and many Men turn to bandits simply to survive, food is scarce as the majority of settlements won’t deal with Elves. (Directly: many human settlements live by buying from Elves and selling at a profit to other human settlements that refuse to do business with pointy-ears.)

Their language is simply called Common Tongue and sounds a lot like Welsh.

Elves

Elves are slowly going extinct, whether because they are breeding more with humans or they just aren’t procreating as much, no one really knows. In reality, most of them have been killed off. There were different races of Elves, but they’ve pretty much blended into one as the rest went extinct. Kyle’s last name comes from another race of Elves that he’s related to. 

Elves live to be 120 or older but no long live to ridiculous ages of the past and few even live past 200. Elves used to own everything, be everywhere, but humans populated more and, well. It’s an unstable relationship. 

Despite having the largest amount of wealth, as well as being the largest distributor (outnumbering human settlements in quality vs quantity), Elves are secretive and no one actually knows much about them. The Caverns and Treetops are the only places Elves live now. They refuse to divulge information to anyone not deemed One of Them, but Kenny, Butters, and Tweek are all considered “good as Elves” which, has the downside that Elf-Haters would consider them targets as well.

Barbarians

The reason these guys are listed separately is because if you asked anyone on Zaron they would say yes: Barbarians are a different race. 

In actuality, no they are not. Barbarians are now so intermixed that they aren’t one race even in a single clan. A clan has a chieftain (of any age/race/gender) and those who follow. You typically stay with one for life and you better have a Damn Good Reason for leaving if you do. Clans range in friendliness and rules, Tweek’s clan is close knit and gentle with rules. Basically you’re expected to do your part and stick with the group, that’s it. You’re also expected to die for the Clan if it comes to it. 

Typically Barbarian tribes stake out an area and that’s theirs. They have some kind of odd magic, not one of fighting but of communication. Thy say the trees themselves will go after you if you cross a Barbarian, whatever happens after you’re caught has driven any survivors to madness. Their magic is more likened to Charms rather than fighting magic like you see in the story. 

Barbarians eat pretty much anything, are fairly immune to disease, and sleep in tents made from animal furs. Fires rage all night, never catching anything else as it obeys the words of the Barbarian who Charmed it. All animals love Barbarians. Everyone else is fucking terrified. 

No one knows if they even have a language, but Kenny notes that Tweek’s speech sounds like he used to a different dialect.

Orcs/Golbins

Orcs and Goblins are used interchangeably for the same extinct race. Orcs are no longer around, considered the beast-men of the races and sub-human. The Elves stomped them out after being nearly driven to extinction themselves, and only barely won. They were the Elves’ fiercest enemy. 

They’ve been demonized so much in recent history that no one remembers what they were actually like. The only people with records are the Elves and they aren’t going to straighten things for the race that nearly drove them out of extinction. It’s a touchy subject. 

There’s rumors orcs still live in Barbarian tribes. 

Considering dragons. 

People swear they exist, or at least existed, but the Elves say they have no record of them ever living in Zaron. So nobody knows.

Okay, you guys have this chapter, which is mostly exposition, then one chapter that’s really just sweet and happy. 

Then we get to the beginning of the end and I’m enjoying working on it. So much.
